Article of the day is the Telegraph’s story: “Love but little money for Mexico’s female fighters“. Marcela, Hiroka and Hija de Karonte are all interviewed, with Hiroka eloquently explaining the difference between wrestling in Japan and Mexico:
“I also like the atmosphere here, because people are very cold in Japan. They remain quiet. Here they are lively and sometimes drunk”
(Sometimes?) As the article indicates, the focus is on how little the women make from wrestling. Marcela and Hiroka aren’t talking, but the LLF promoter says he pays between 100 and 5000 pesos ($7.64 to $382US). If you’ve see pictures of crowd at those shows, even those numbers seem high. Taichi’s debut! And what a match that’ll be. I hope Naito tells him absolutely nothing about his opponents before the match (and then his reactions are recorded.) CMLL actually mentions on their website that Taichi will be arriving at 5pm on Monday at the airport, if you’d like to greet him.
This weekend, CMLL will hold two title matches. Mistico defends the Mexican Light Heavyweight Championship versus Volador Jr. on Friday, and Hijo del Fantasma defends his CMLL World Middleweight Championship on Sunday. Should we expect a title change?
That last title change in CMLL was Valiente defeating Sangre Azteca on August 16, 2009.
(known) Title defenses since
22 title defenses is a lot, but that’s just an average of slightly over 1 title defense per the 18 active CMLL titles. Still, I’m thinking this list will be two longer by this time next week.
(I’m not counting the Mexican Trios tournament, since that was a vacant title and not a champion being defeated.)
