01/17 AAA TV Taping (Ecatpec)

AAA TV (SUN) 01/17 Centro Civico de Ecatepec
1) La Parkita, Mini Charly Manson, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Histeria, Mini Psicosis
2) Cuervo, Escoria, Espíritu, Ozz vs Amnesia, Black Abyss, Histeria, Psicosis III
3) Extreme Tiger & Jack Evans vs Joe Lider & Nicho el Millionario
4) Crazy Boy, La Parka Jr., Laredo Kid vs Electroshock, Silver King, Último Gladiador
5) Cibernético, Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown vs Chessman, Kenzo Suzuki, Konnan, Zorro

Last 2 tapings here: 06/17/09 (Konnan gets indefinitely suspended), 02/15/09 (Charly Manson’s return). I believe this is also where the Perros ran their last TV taping, though I may be confusing two buildings.

2010 TV Taping Chart
Projected Air Date (#922)
Mexico: 01/24 – this fits perfectly with the 2 Best Of shows I’d be guessing at.
US: 02/01

Main event is interesting – this is clearly a match the Psycho Circus could lose to end the streak. On the other hand, Cibernetico was being built as a near unstoppable monster, coming back on 2-1, 3-1, 5-1 and 7-1 numbers. The only thing that could stop Cibernetico was white powder. (…) As long as the clowns can keep an eye on Rain, they should be all good here.

Laredo in the semimain event would be interesting if it wasn’t so clear he was there to be killed by the rudos.

Tercera took place on the last card of last year. It sounded like the Hermanidad were pretty dominant, so it’s a surprise to see it here. Probably nothing better to do.

Should Ozz & crew just be happy to get on TV? Only this and the opener actually look like matches I’d like to see, and this one only counts because I have no idea about the new Vipers yet and I have misplaced hope for good Dark Family matches.

Divina’s injury opens up a spot for a mini tecnico, assuming AAA runs many mini trios. The current Mascarita Sagrada is OK at best. Parkita (III) gets a shot here, but he’s no great shakes either. You know who they could use? Atomic Boy!

top 6 stories of the last 2 weeks

BY DEMAND. It’s been a horrible slow two weeks (and month)

1) USA Today wrote an article about the WWE’s affect on Lucha Libre’s popularity. A lot of what’s been discussed before, and still some stuff that’s not discussed at all.

2) WON says AAA is getting rid of it’s writers. No one’s quite sure what they did. Judging from when we were told they came in and when they left, maybe they were responsible for the Sexi Star/Fabi Apache storyline? It’s unclear.

3) CMLL airs the 76th Anniversary show, after 4 months. It was eh. The Volador match should not have aired at all. Crowd sounded dead after Liger pinned UG – that match had it’s moments, but it felt like the wrong finish for the night. Main event was weighed down by Negro Casas doing everything in his power to make sure he was the one who was booed and Mistico was cheered that it didn’t make for an interesting match.

(While we’re at it – quick summary of GdT, part 1: I was happy with the minis, but everything else was bad to horrible.)

4) In Chipas, the box y lucha commission tried to stop Silver King from wrestling with his mask, but the AAA wrestlers turned the crowd against them. Outside of DF, this is the first time a commission has acted against Silver King.

5) Averno & Ultimo Guerrero failed to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles. Averno offered to face Tiger Mask IV next, while Ultimo Guerrero pointed out he still has three belts anyway. HOORAY.

6) Texano & Terrible will challenge No Limit for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Titles in February. And I need to get the link to the No Limit/Terrible & Texano match on YouTube, because no one in Japan knows this team.

Other stuff:

– Mini Cibernetico stabbed two people. One was his mistress, one was someone he thought his mistress might be cheating with
– Rey Bucanero and Mistico are feuding in Puebla, to set up a title match
– Oficials retained the IWRG IC Trios titles
– La Comadnate become Texano & Terrible’s manager. No one knows why.
– Mascara Dorada beat Felino in a singles match CMLL didn’t get around to promoting.
– Canek won a father/son match in IWRG
– CMLL opening match wrestler Camorra got hurt. CMLL did a better job of mentioning this than Dorada/Felino
– EAW ran a show! It may air!
– Everyone (but me) looks back at 2009
– I got fooled by Dia de Innocentes. As usual.

IWRG tournament, Mex Trios title match, GDL

IWRG (FRI) 01/01 Arena Naucalpan [The Gladiatores]
1) Avisman & Flama Infernal b Eragon & Volaris
2) Guizmo & Ultramán Jr. b Keshin Black & Veneno [quarterfinal]
3) Dr. Cerebro & Hijo del Signo b Imperial & Rocket [quarterfinal]
4) Chico Che & Dinamic Black b Alan Extreme & Black Terry [quarterfinal]
5) Comando Negro & Oficial 911 b Bushi & Guerrero 2000 [quarterfinal]
6) Fantasma de la Ópera & Gringo Loco b Trauma I & Trauma II
7) Dr. Cerebro & Hijo del Signo b Guizmo & Ultramán Jr. [semifinal]
8) Comando Negro & Oficial 911 b Chico Che & Dinamic Black [semifinal]
9) Dr. Cerebro & Hijo del Signo b Comando Negro & Oficial 911 [final]

(Black Terry Jr. has video of this show on his YouTube channel.)

Veteran/Rookie tournament. Dr. Cerebro replaced Cerebro Negro, which makes sense. Rocket replaced Freelance, which does not quite make sense.  Cerebro & Signo are the winners; no word on a specific prize.

During the show, IWRG gave out awards were given to some wrestlers in Black Terry Jr.’s wrestling class: Gringo Loco, Flama Infernal, Hijo del Signo, and Black Terry. Hooray!

There’s a lot of shows today taking advantage of Dia de Reyes, and CMLL’s Arena Coliseo show is probably the biggest. Kind of a surprise that they’re moving a special show out of Arena Mexico, since it always goes the other way. The big match on the show is the final of the Mexican Trios Tournament.

[poll id=”54″]

This poll scares me.

On Monday, Ovaciones explains this tournament was taking place because the titles had not been defended for 90 days. Other titles that should be vacated by that standard:

  • CMLL World Minis Championship: Bam Bam (no known defenses since 12/19/2008)
  • CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship: Epehsto (no known defenses – AT ALL. Won it on 05/26/09)
  • CMLL World Heavyweight Championship: Ultimo Guerrero (no known defenses since 09/25/2009)
  • CMLL World Trios Championship: Hector Garza, La Mascara, Hijo del Fantasma (no known defenses since 09/16/09)
  • NWA World Welterweight Championship: Mephisto (no known defenses since 07/13/09)
  • Mexican National Lightweight Championship: Pierrothito (no known defenses since 09/25/09)

A lot of tournaments coming up! (Someone smarted up, because that reason is not mentioned today.)

Cronicas Y Leyendas looks back at Mil Mascaras, athlete of the year 1977.

Estrella del Ring has interviews with Arena San Juan wrestlers Nino de Ebano, Caricia, Colombiano & Miserable.

In this link, Intocable hits on random Mexican singer, describes himself in bed. I am sorry I’m including that link.

El Hijo del Santo says PERHAPS this will be the year he and Blue Demon Jr. face off in a mask match. Or maybe they’ll team. Or maybe they’ll do neither of these things.

CMLL (SUN) 01/10 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) El Divino vs Katana
2) Magnum & Samurai vs Acertijo & Exterminador
3) Gallo & Neutrón vs Malefico & Mr. Trueno
4) Dalis la Caribeña, Lluvia, Star Fire vs La Comandante, Magnifica, Princesa Sujei
5) Brazo de Plata, La Sombra, Toscano vs Terrible, Texano, Vangelis

That’s going to be a rough semifinal.

CMLL (TUE) 01/12 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Relampago & Virgo vs Meteoro & Thunder Boy
2) Angelo & Metatrón vs Asesino Negro & Drago
3) Hierro & Palacio Negro vs Ángel del Mal & Rey Trueno
4) Máscara Dorada & Máximo vs Ephesto & Euforia
5) Blue Panther & Brazo de Plata vs Terrible & Texano

Feels like nothing going on here (too.)

No 6 top stories of the last 2 weeks today. There hasn’t really been any.

I’ll be on Figure Four Daily later today.

AAA spot show video, Puebla, Mini Cibernetico arrested, Incognito, NJPW

AAA (SAT) 01/02 Auditorio de la Unidad Deportiva Morelos, Colima [RadioLevy]
1) Principe Galactico & Rey Dorado b Aguililo Michoacano & El Aliado de la Muerte
2) Black Crazy & General de la Muerte b El Vaquero (Colima) & Payaso Man
3) Mascarita Sagrada & Octagoncito b Mini Abismo Negro & Mini Histeria
4) Gran Apache & Mari Apache b Billy Boy & Cinthia Moreno
5) Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown b Aerostar, Laredo Kid, Súper Fly

Not so extraordinary of a show, but the link has multiple video clips of the matches. Doesn’t seem they drew a lot (for Air Force vs Psycho Circus? shocking – though it does look a lot better on the video than the still they use), but the promoter is quoted as bringing in Parka and Mesias on 02/23.

CMLL (MON) 01/04 Arena Puebla [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Asturiano & Lestat b Karisma & Siki Osama
2) Estrella Mágica, Lady Apache, Star Fire b Hiroka, La Seductora, Yezca
3) Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Warrior, Pierrothito b Bam Bam, Mascarita Dorada, Pequeño Olímpico
4) Mephisto, Terrible, Texano Jr. b Black Tiger, Máscara Dorada, Valiente
5) Brazo de Plata, Místico, Sagrado DQ Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Toro Bill Sr.

Some subs: Sagrado moves up to the main to replace Panther, Black Tiger takes his place in the semimian, and Toro Bill replaces Misterioso II in the main. Recap lists Averno in the semimain, which would be a neat trick.

ReyBuc fouled Mistico in the main, then demanded a title shot. Mistico said he’s got national titles and world titles (he doesn’t have a world title, unless he digs the WWA middleweight title out of the closet), but he’s not going to put any of them on the line – Mistico wants a mask vs hair match. Bucanero pointed out how Mistico says that all the time and it never happens, and the people want a championship match so they should just do that. What a weird conversation.

Mini rudos got a straight falls win.

Mini Cibernetico is in jail on charges of attempted homicide. Damian Moreno Quiroz was arrested for stabbing two people in Chimalhuacán, in what is assumed to be an act of jealousy. There was a Mini Cibernetico in AAA as late as 1998, and there’s one in who works with Martha Villalobos’ Reyes del Ring shows as well as other shows around Mexico City; since this is a mini, it’s not especially clear if this is the same one as those, or a different one entirely. Both victims are reported as in serious condition.

SuperLuchas has Incognito with his WWE contract. Again, posting photos of yourself with a WWE contract is a bad idea. Much more interesting is the photographer – Cassandro! If he did this permanently, he’d steal the title of best working photographer (sorry Black Terry Jr. and Alexis.) R de Rudo has an interview with Incognito about the contract; he’d like to wrestle as Mystico, but he’s prepared for anything.

Ovaciones believes Super Nova has also signed a developmental deal. Super Nova sounded like he still had international bookings to work thru, but they usually allow the wrestler to work thru that, and it’s usually a couple months before the contract kicks in just for that purpose. They’ll both head to FCW, they’ll both wrestle unmasked at some point, and the internet will freak out again.

Ovaciones also says Naitoh will be in CMLL intermittently in 2010, and may end up as a tecnico since the crowd is supporting him. No mention of Yujiro.

Heading the other way: NJPW’s announced Terrible & Texano Jr. will be No Limit’s first challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Tag Team championships. Match will take place on 02/14 in Sumo Hall. (CMLL ain’t winning these tag titles either,  but it’ll be fun.)

A week before the official release, AAA will hold the premiere of their movie on January 16. They’ve also posted a behind the scenes movie.

Proyeccion Luchistica has a video interview with IWRG undercard wrestlers Samot & El Maldito Jr.. I hope he asked Samot how his name is supposed to be spelled, because we’ve gotten Samot, Samoth, and Samoa.

El Hijo del Santo is doing an autograph signing tomorrow.

Indy wrestler Principe Gitano Jr. is in need of blood donations.

RFC has his 2009 awards for Monterrey.

DJ Spectro has his last Torneo de la Muerte, featuring Shocker vs Rey Bucanero.

DTU points to Ultimo Guerrero vs Crazy Boy from their DTU Clasicos show.

Ras de Lona #79 has part 2 of the 2009 Year In Review. Only one to go, and that maybe we get new stuff. I could not believe they had Averno & Ultimo Guerrero for multiple segments, one even talking about CMLL conquering the world this past year, and no one brought up the Tokyo Dome. Was this taped before they knew they were going?

Ohtani’s Jacket says Shiro Koshinaka vs Satanico caused him to hate Shiro a little less.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

IWRG (THU) 01/07 Arena Naucalpan
1) Volaris vs Halcon 2000
2) Eragon & Imperial vs Comando Negro & Flama Infernal
3) Brazo de Plata Jr., Brazo Jr., Brazo Metalico vs Avisman, El Hijo del Diablo, Gringo Loco
4) Pantera, Suicida, Zatura vs Black Terry, Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro
5) Angelico, Solar I, Ultramán Jr. vs Negro Navarro, Trauma I, Trauma II

Attack of the Brazos! This can not be a good thing. Like his sons, Negro Navarro seems to have quietly gone back to the rudo sign. Maybe Solar just brings that out of him.

Dorada/Felino, IWRG, tag team titles not won

CMLL (SUN) 01/03 Arena Coliseo [Ovaciones (PDF)]
1) Cholo & Ramstein b Principe & Súper Camaleón
2) Dr. X, Hooligan, Nitro b Molotov, Sensei, Starman
3) Flash, Leono, Rush DQ Cancerbero, Raciel, Virus
4) Brazo de Plata, Shocker, Toscano b Dragon Rojo Jr., Ray Mendoza Jr., Rey Bucanero
5) Máscara Dorada b Felino

Apparently, Ovaciones PDF has been working for a while. Only found on a whim, wanting to know what the deal was with Dorada/Felino.

That match did take place (despite no mention of it except Felino mentioning in comedy skits on TV this week), with Dorada getting the clean headscissors win. Sunday’s ESTO and Ovaciones both had the lineup posted on CMLL.com (including the minis match, which was apparently pulled), so someone at CMLL screwed up here. We all get busy around the holidays.

Straight fall win for the tecnicos in the tercera. Virus fouled Rush in the second; understandable, but one does not want to get in a war with Rush. Nothing good can come of it.

Starman replaced Metalico, who was supposed to return to action here. Guess he still has abscess related issues.

IWRG (SUN) 01/03 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr.]
1) Dinamic Black b Comando Negro
2) Alan Extreme & Hijo del Signo b Gemelo Fantastico I & Gemelo Fantastico II
3) Fantasma de la Ópera, Maldito Jr., Samoth b Bushi, Eragon, Jack
4) Exodia, Hijo del Pantera, Ultramán Jr. b Barba Roja, Trauma I, Trauma II
5) Pantera, Scorpio Jr., Zatura b Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Máscara Año 2000, Veneno

Black Terry notes it was a night of injuries

  • Hijo del Signo’s nose was broken by one of the Gemelos.
  • Trauma was out of it after a springboard legdrop from Ultraman Jr.
  • Exodia was sitting, waiting to be kicked, when Barba Roja dropped a senton on his head instead. Exodia was knocked out.

Fantasma replaced Toxico (hmm.) Barba Roja took Pirata Morgan’s spot, but that looks more like a typo on the poster.

At Wrestle Kingdom IV, Averno & Ultimo Guerrero failed to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. Taguchi pinned Averno, who’s now 0-2 in the Tokyo Dome. No Limit did pick up the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship, and we’ll see if Naito hints at a defense when he’s back in town this week.

Box Y Lucha #2955 has the Three Wise Men on the cover. Inside, in the great tradition of New Year’s Resolution that won’t be kept, Vangelis says he wants to win back the Light Heavyweight title from Mistico.

Both Televisa Deportes and Ovaciones have recaps of CMLL’s 2009. Somewhat amazingly similar. (Perhaps that’s why no one had time to update Sunday’s lineup.)

indy (TUE) 01/05 Arena Coliseo Monterrey
1) Mr. Cuervo & Solovino vs Angel Espacial & Infinito
2) Gememlo Muerte I & Gememlo Muerte II vs Aguila Extrema & Halcon Peregrino
3) Angel del Silencia, Angel Dorado Jr., Gato Fantasma vs Crazy Demon, Orquidia Negra, Viernes 13
4) Furor vs Voltaje [super libre]
5) Hijo del Ninja, Silver Star, Vaquero Romo vs Estrella Dorado Jr., Hator, Monje Negro Jr.

The rematch, just for Tim!

EAW, Guadalajara, AAA’s movie, CMLL Anniversary show

EAW (FRI) 01/01 Gimansio Juan de la Barrera [Luchando Libre]
1) Dinastia & Guerrero 2000 b Konami & Rex
2) Dianamita Kid & Dragon Celestial b Jaguar de Fuego & Principe Otomi
3) Celestial, Ente, Turbo b Black Thunder, Talisman Jr., Vampiro Metálico
4) El Alebrije & Pollo b Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Monsther
5) Pantera & Super Crazy DRAW Charly Manson & Juventud Guerrera
6) Canek Jr., Groon XXX, Tinieblas Jr. b Histeria, Pirata Morgan, Psicosis II

The two sided ring drew a pretty good crowd, but it was a free show (with a small donation.) TV Azteca was one of the presenting sponsors, and I think I can see a video camera on some of the photos, but I don’t know that means it was taped or it’ll air.

CMLL (SUN) 01/03 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Tragedias b Nocturno
2) Titanio b Katana
3) Nube Roja & Virgo b Magnum & Samurai
4) Astaroth, Hierro, Metal Blanco b Asesino Negro, Ebola, Ráfaga
5) Negro Casas, Terrible, Texano b Blue Panther, La Máscara, Máximo
6) Místico DQ Mr. Niebla

Mr. Niebla yanked off Mistico’s mask in front of the referee.

Maximo tried to get Negro with a casita, but Negro fouled him and got his own move for the win.

Advance press is starting to run for AAA’s anime, just under 3 weeks away. In an interview with Notimex, Dorian Roldan (head of creative and new projects!) says 225 theaters will be showing the movie at the premiere, there’s talk about more movies in 2011, or maybe spinning the movie out into a television series. They’d also like to get this film in other countries – only Japan is mentioned. The success (or lack of success, if it goes that way) of AAA’s movie and video game clearly will be big stories in 2010.

One of the bigger stories of last year was CMLL’s Anniversary show, and LuchaLibreDeMexico has yesterday’s broadcast of the show up on YouTube – start with Part 1

Leading up to their title match in the Tokyo Dome, Averno & Ultimo Guerrero wore sparkly masks to the press conference, and everyone got find out how “otra nivel” translated to Japanese. They are so certainly not coming home with the belts, but it’ll still be a nice trip. FWIW, No Limit are still promising to bring the tag team belts back to Mexico, and that’s somehow a more probable outcome.

Another Notimex article looks back at big CMLL apuesta matches of ’09. Rosa Negra never did return after her match with Marcela; that’s one painful way to go into retirement.

Over on WagnerMania, ther’es a long version of the Silver King vs Chiapas Box Y Lucha Commission story. Silver King’s new argument is his mask looks different than the one he lost, therefore there should be no problems. This also appears to be less than true, but I appreciate the creativity. In another story I don’t quite believe, LA Park says he’s close to handing over his name to his son and going into semi-retirement, while his son settles all his feuds.

Cesar responds to last week’s USA Today article, saying the evidence presented actually leads to an opposite conclusion: WWE success in Mexico is good for lucha libre. The idea is WWE is creating more fans of wrestling, not stealing them away, and those are potential CMLL/AAA customers if/when they improve their creative. Meanwhile, WWE is giving CMLL and AAA a model to follow and steal from. Definitely worth reading for yourself. Cesar also reviews this week’s lineups.

DJ Spectro recounts the curse of Pentagon.

AAA points to a new Zorro fan site. If you’re a more recent arrival to the internet and ever wanted to know what it looked like in 1996, that page is fine re-creation.

Cronicas Y Leyendas looks back at Tineiblas Jr. & Razor Ramon, the dream match that never actually occured.

DTU posted Negro Navarro vs Electroshock, in case you also want to make it the only Negro Navarro match you watch this year.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

I’ll be on Figure Four Daily this upcoming Wednesday, with Bryan and Dr. Lucha, talking about the year in lucha. I believe it’ll be a subscriber only show – what a fine time to sign up! (Or not, I guess I’ll live.)
