Puebla, Valiente, Taichi

CMLL (MON) 01/18 Arena Puebla [R de Rudo]
1) Mr. Rafaga & Policeman b Asturiano & SWAT
2) Bam Bam, Fantasy, Último Dragoncito b Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Violencia
3) Ángel de Oro, Ángel de Plata, Sagrado b Nitro, Nosferatu, Shigeo Okumura
4) Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara, Valiente b Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca, Vangelis
5) Felino, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero b La Sombra, Shocker, Volador Jr.

Felino & Niebla fouled Somnbra & Volador and got away with it for the win. Tecnicos demanded a super libre match. Seems like a tag team title match coming up here.

Vangelis replaced Misterioso II in the semimain, where Mascara got Sangre with the campana. Ultimo Dragoncito replaced Tzuki in the minis match.

Ovaciones and ESTO both preview tonight’s CMLL card. There’s no particular story going into this one, though maybe it should be Garza continuing his win streak heading into Friday.

Fuego en el Ring talks to Valiente, who’s now the only Valiente. Hijo de Valiente and Valiente Jr. (“children of a friend”) had talked about using the name, but never actually got permission. After CMLL pointed it out, Valiente asked them to stop. They also have interviews with Rambo, La Comadante (who figures she got a promotion in Pierroth’s army, causing the name change) and Okumura. Okumura says he and Naito have been brainstorming ideas for Taichi. Judging from Naito on this weekends 52MX show, Taichi should definitely be concerned. NJPW officially announced Taichi, was headed to CMLL for an excursion. No word on exactly how long he’s meant to be in CMLL for, but it should be a while.

Record, LuchandoLibre, ESTO and R de Rudos have reports on the Perros show.

There’s lots of photos of this weekend’s Tijuana show over on flickr.

A new lucha libre commissioner was sworn in, in Juarez.

Blue Demon Jr. will be appearing on ROH’s Charlotte show. Kind of a surprise, because he was not that popular last time ROH used him, but they wanted a lucha name to help draw latinos.

Box Y Lucha #2957 hypes more Konnan vs Cibernetico. Or maybe they’re it’s just meant as a warning.

Cronicas y Leyendas writes about Rey Misterio & Juvi in Japan, Cien Caras vs Salomon Grundy (slightly different matches), plus Pirata Morgan taking Masakre’s hair, and Solitario taking Atila’s mask.

Segunda Caida writes about IWRG 11/26/09 and KrisZ’s news update

  1. Is Jack Evans still with ROH? if so you would think they could have gotten some of AAA’s main players to come up (konnan, ciber, Nicho, La Parka Jr.)

  2. Did Misterioso get hurt in the Trios Titles match? He’s been MIA since including two straight Puebla no-shows.

  3. @Rob: He did get advertised for a couple shows in Laguna last week, so he might have just gotten time off and no one told the booking crew.

I hope I’m not making a bad assumption there!

  4. @CM93: I was told Taichi is decent, but doesn’t sound like anything special. He’s got a crazy hair do, which may be enough in CMLL.

  5. I think its good that CMLL is adding Tai chi to their promotion. It might help some of their wrestlers relax and might improve the health of various guys.

  6. Much like Jennifer Blake was brought in to help the AAA wrestlers relax?

I have no comment on whether she’s helping or hurting their health…

  7. When did the Flock of Seagulls haircut comeback?

Whatever happened to Japanese wrestlers with bad haircuts (well you know bowl or crewcuts!) and circles on their backs and shoulders like in the ’80s?

I hope CMLL debuts a chick named Joanie, so then I can say, Joanie loves Taichi!

  8. I just realized while looking at the New Japan page that Okada is going to TNA. No wonder why in the final photo, he looks sad.

  9. Does anyone know what time AAA aired on Sunday in Mexico? Did the Cowboys game mess up their starting time? I know AAA aired b/c I read someone complain that it was stupid to air Triplemania on free television without hyping it.

  10. Smackdown 9.5
    CMLL 2.7
    RAW 9.1

Hopefully AAA is be available later. I think the NFL game messed up their time slot.

  11. @LLL: It aired at 4:00 I believe and got two hours. Pretty sure it is scheduled for the same time again this week.

  12. @Alan: Thanks. I only watched the Jets game at 4:30p.

Funny how CMLL’s rating is not that low compared to new footage. They had a few 2.8’s and low 3.0’s before.

  13. ROH is bringing in Blue Demon Jr. to Charlotte, NC because they want a lucha name to draw Latinos, did i read that correctly? roughly 5% of Charlotte’s 600,000 people are Latino. what are they hoping he brings in, an extra 10 people?

and Taichi is nothing special. he’s been career jobber thus far in his career and wont be going much further than that in the future. i actually wish Okada was going to CMLL & Taichi was returning to TNA, as Okada is far better in the ring and is the future of New Japan.

  14. @Bruce: Where did you get those numbers? 1990 Census? Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro have seen an 800% increase in their Hispanic population, and are major stops for Mexican tours. Charlotte Metro has about 125,000 Mexicans.

But Blue Demon is nothing. He never drew a dime in Mexico, yet his mask is one of the most recognizable masks, and he’s one of the most booked guys these days. His legend has grown even if his box office receipts don’t back it up.

  15. @Alan: It was a great game. There’s even a youtube clip of SD police arresting a Jets fan at the stadium for rooting for the Jets.

The Jets only did a 3.5 so NFL does about as good as some Mexican soccer and Lucha.

  16. @ LLL:

okay, i looked it up. i was off by alittle bit. according to http://www.city-data.com/city/Charlotte-North-Carolina.html in July 2008 the pop. of Charlotte is 687,456 & 7.4% of that population is Hispanic. i dont know where you got an 800% increase in 20 years from, but its definitely inaccurate. its still not alot of hispanics that ROH should bring in Demon for. 2/3 of the 7.4% are women & children. then you have probaly only about 1/5 of the male population into wrestling enough to go to an indy show. plus those same people would rather spend $4 and go see a GOUGE or ACW show at their local high school, than $20 to see ROH.

  17. You can’t look just at the city of Charlotte. Many Mexicans live in outlying towns too. Charlotte Metropolitan area has over 125,000 Mexicans. Did you ever think Luchadors would be a draw in the old Crockett territory?

Are you going to this show?

  18. @ LLL:

your article is incorrect on the population. there is no way there are 2.85 million people in Charlotte. there’s not one city in North Carolina with a population above 1 million. the 7% of the population part is correct, but the number they have for the population isnt.

to answer your questions, no i’m not going. i’m in Durham & a ROH show isnt worth the drive. to the other question, i dont consider Blue Demon Jr. to be a draw in this area of the US. maybe in Texas & SoCal but even thats a stretch. but luchadors themselves can draw here. WCW used to always sell out when they came here and they used alot of luchadors. now the only promotion that really thrives here is UWF though & its only because of Hermi Sadler getting the NASCAR fans to go to wrestling shows.

  19. @LLL: NFL is pretty popular down here. I’m guessing that was only the network rating right? The game was also broadcast on ESPN, so that would probably push the number even a little higher.

  20. @Bruce: Bruce. That’s the METROPOLITAN area. You don’t have to be a Charlotte resident to buy a ticket to the show. North Carolina is well-known for their exploding Hispanic population, especially Raleigh Metro, and Charlotte. When I drive through, I always listen to La Ley and hear about all the dances coming to Raleigh. Looks like Charlotte has seen a 400% increase since 1990.

  21. @LLL:

the article you linked clearly has written at the top that the population of Charlotte is over 2 million. thats just plain wrong. the census done in the summer of 2008 puts the population at just over 600,000.

and Raleigh is roughly 2 hours from Charlotte. no one is driving 2 hours to see Blue Demon Jr. wrestle in ROH. i honestly cant see people in Mexico travelling 2 hours to see him wrestle, so how you think people in Raleigh will make that kind of trip to see him is beyond me.

i also love how your population % keeps changing. first it was an 800% increase, now its a 400% increase. i was born, raised and lived 25 years of my life in Race City, and moved to Durham only a few years ago. i know the Charlotte area pretty well. until you can show some kind of proof this discussion isnt going anywhere. all you did was link an article that was proved false & say that a radio station hypes dance clubs in Raleigh (and i dont know what that has to do with the hispanic population in the Charlotte area) & then give us made up percentages that you’ve changed twice about the population growth in the past 20 years.

  22. @Bruce: 400% is still a huge increase, and you didn’t offer a percentage anyway.

The link I provide shows the Charlotte Metropolitan area, including suburbs. 400% increase is huge, and I’m sure the locals have felt the drastic changes with it.

ROH’s strategy makes sense in a way, but Demon is not much of a draw. 200,000 Hispanics in the Charlotte Metro area is enough to market to.
