db update: recent events page

I’ve added a new page to the daily database updates: Recent Events. For each promotion I’m specifically watching, you’ll get a list of people joining, leaving, flipping side, and major title matches. Plus, there’s an inactive list for each promotion, so you can check to see if Rene Guajarado Jr. is hurt when you wonder whatever happened to him.

This is probably most useful for people who want to keep close track of things. Everything here was around on other pages, but I figure it’s more convenient to have it one place. As part of fixing things up for this, I’ve streamlined the roster pages. As you can see on the IWRG pages, I’ve taken out the pictures and replaced them with links to the wiki. Current champions are also now being automatically updated.

I’m tracking rosters for

  • the main CMLL roster
  • the AAA roster (which includes some people who don’t ever make TV)
  • the IWRG roster (lots of opening card turnover)
  • Arena Puebla regulars
  • Arena Coliseo Guadalajara regulars

Probably could stand more, but it’s gotta be a place where shows are regularly run (and news gets out about them) and there’s at least some level of consistency in the lineups to make a roster somewhat meaningful. ACMonterrey is the obvious addition, though I think there’s a lot of turnover there.

Any suggestions/ideas to do something else interesting are always appreciated.

Joaquin Roldan talks to ESTO

ESTO has an interview with Joaquin Roldan about activities in AAA. It’s not long, and it’s half storyline or stuff you already know (the FSE tournament, Roldan being back in charge).

No mention of the TV situation, except a mention that the FSE show will air “the first or second week of September.” They’re planning on running another US tour around October/November, and going back to Costa Rica by the end of the year. No idea of locations – luchalibreusa doesn’t seem to have anything.

Ovaciones had a nice story on the career of Matematico, since he’s wrestling tonight in IWRG’s throwback show. Website’s not coming up for me right now to get the link, but it should be a page or two from here.

A few AAA notes out of today’s Wrestling Observer:

– The WON calls Televisa the original owner of AAA, and says Antonio Pena bought the company from them (and the Roldan’s would own it completely today.)
– X-Pac’s presumed out of AAA. No one’s heard from him since he left to go to the Chicago Comic Con on the 8th.
– Konnan and Hector Melendez ended up doing the commentary for Monday’s taping.
– Konnan’s new Legion may end up being Alex, Teddy Hart (who people aren’t happy with), Nicho, Lider, Tirantes, Rain, and Nikki Roxx (at least when she was planned to come in for FSE.)
– AAA business is down. Cibernetico’s return hasn’t meant anything.

Lots of Box Y Lucha articles:

– Fabi Apache and Sexi Star talk about the cage match. Sexi says not to believe the people who say she’ll lose her mask, and instead fans should bring bags to the show to collect Fabi Apache’s hair.

– Cibernetico says he should be the sole #1 contender because he never lost the title. I don’t think that line works when you volunteraly give up the title. He also says he never felt comfortable as a tecnico, but also talks about how the fans were always rooting for him when he was in the indies.

– Negro Casas talks about his career, and the possible wrestling debuts of his daugther and wife.

– No Limit & Okumura want a trios title shot, figuring they’ve got Hector Garza’s number.

– Amapola wants to face Princesa Blanca and unify the women’s championships.

– Super Porky talks about how totally busy he is working now that he’s left AAA. Not only him, but his daughters are working continuously. Despite his busy schedule, he’s teaching classes three days a week at Felipe Ham Lee’s gym. Despite all of this work, Porky would go to CMLL if they just called. I don’t know how he ever had the time and sit down for this conversation.

– Villano III talks about the time he let a kid drive his car while he slept, and woke up in a field with four flat tires, and the time his bag with his title belt fell out of the car.

The Gladiatores has video interviews with Ultimo Dragon, Ultraman Jr. and Dinastia.

Aerostar, Laredo Kid, Super Fly vs Billy Boy, Decnnis, Tito Santana II – This was pretty good, though not as great as some of the openers early this year. Super Fly didn’t look as good as he has in the past here. Hurt? Successfully screwed up?

Charly Manson & Jack Evans vs Chessman & Teddy Hart – slightly better than Jack/Teddy, because you had two guys getting beat up forever instead of one, but still…

El Elegido, Extreme Tiger, Marco Corleone vs Kenzo Suzuki, Oriental, Sugi – despite the vignette lead up, which made Sugi seem like a joke, he looked really good here and they got him over as something meaningful. Beating the cruiserweight champion doesn’t mean anything, because that title doesn’t mean anything right now, but the finish was sure memorable. A good start for the trio.

El Mesías & La Parka Jr. vs Dr. Wagner Jr. & Silver King – again, Wagner & Silver work as rudos and get cheered anyway. I thought AAA might be doing something where maksed Zorro is good, unmasked Zorro is evil, and we’re not quite sure if Zorro has a split personality or if there’s a second Zorro running around, but instead they decided to make this an incomprehensible mess of an angle. I guess that’s one of doing it.

08/22-23 Lucha Times

box. The obvious big news to get out of the way early is Televisa’s site lists the AAA show in it’s normal timeslot. Think it did last week, too.

AAA-US: big #1 contenders match for the Verano de Escandalo title shot. If you’ve somehow made it this far without knowing who wins it, I won’t say a word. If you’re one who voted for Killer and Zombie Clown having left AAA, then their match here would seem to be farewell match.

52MX: Hope CatchChannel or someone else turns up to get the Valiente/Sangre title match.

CMLL-MEX: back to 2 hours, so top 3.

AAA-MEX: you know those AAA TV results I had up here a few hours ago? That show. Mesias vs Wagner in a match where neither man actually has to take a pin, and they still can’t do a finish. That seems a bad sign.

C3: Good minis match and a Romanos segunda, and then things may get a bit iffy

Puebla: I’m saying no on Leono, though the four way trios match probably is the biggest time sink. Title match has to make it, return of Guerrero Mantis absolutely has to make it.

Monterrey: Okay, maybe THIS is the farewell to Killer & Zombie. The Clowns working Sunday would have to mean they quit the company, and the company came up with new gimmicks, sometime between late Sunday and early Tuesday, I think.

Main event is a bit confusing at first glance and needs a better explanation. It’s a six man cage match. The first wrestler out is #1 contender to the AAA Cruiserweight Championship. The last man remaining loses his spot in AAA.

Now, unless something very strange happens at Verano de Escandalo, the Cruiserweight champion at the time of this match will be in this match – all five guys are there. Not only is it weird for the champ to be in a match for the title, but there’s the theoretical possibility of the champion losing the match and being out of the company. It’s not going to happen, but it’s still weird.

Working thru the names:
– Sugi: supposed to be here for a year
– Jack Evans: loved by all in AAA
– Extreme Tiger: loved by all who book matches in AAA
– Alex Koslov: just turned rudo, a lot of build up on him
– Teddy Hart: Nikki is just on the way back, and AAA
– Rocky Romero: hmmm

FWIW, everyone but Sugi is listed on AAA lineups in September. They even put a lineup for October where Jack & Rocky vs Alex & Scoria, plus Teddy in the main event. Of course, it also has Escorpion Negro in a match, and he left on Monday, so don’t take advance lineups as gospel.

It’s always possible any one of the foreigners has just had enough of being a foreigner and wants to go home, so there’s no sure thing. Also, AAA wouldn’t be the first promotion to pretend Rocky Romero doesn’t exist and bring in a remarkable similar guy under a mask. I think Rocky’s the (un)favorite, but it’s not cut and dry thing.

Elsewise, it’s weird to see Mesias vs Cibernetico as a third match, but not weird to see it listed a revenge match. You can read into those two facing off and Wagner being in his own match in enough different ways to see any of the three guys coming out of Verano as champion.

Second match reminds us Fabi/Aero vs Sexi/Billy won’t be coming to a complete end this Friday, because it can never come to a complete end. It’ll be about mocking whoever lost.

Estrellita could make her return to TV after a short nine month break, unless they only air four matches. Or no matches, but then we’ve got bigger problems.
