Feel free to comment about the show in the comments. Not bothering with cover it live – we’ll see if WordPress can handle the traffic! I’ll be updating here, maybe in the comments, maybe on twitter, maybe still distracted by this 2-2 game. Edit: Spoke too soon.
As of 9, radio was still doing soccer coverage. May be a while.
Pachuca won 3-1 over Queretaro. Now you know.
There’s no way we’re getting results for the opener. I notice SuperLuchas isn’t bothering with live results! This will allow me to catch up on the all important Alexa rankings. (Do you think they’d do live results for X-LAW?)
9:26: Are they on? As soon as they get the introductions done, yes
9:34: Semimain is on. Or at least introductions are on. No idea on the first two matches.
3) La Sombra, Mistico, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Ultimo Guerrero
Fall 1: tecnicos
Fall 2: tecncios – rudos Mistica on UG, rudos yank Mistico’s mask. Thought it was a DQ, but apparently not? They’re still wrestling, you see. Or hear. Whatever.
Fall 2: rudos – Mistica on UG, but UG tosses his mask off to draw the DQ.
Fall 3: tecnicos by DQ, Mistico doing the mask yank fake.
Plenty of time to set up that cage.
Atlantis chats with the announcers. I’m going to go make some popcorn.
10:00 Entrances going on for the main event…
4) Shocker vs Hector Garza, Toscano, Negro Casas, Black Warrior, Terrible, Texano Jr., Naito, Yujiro, Shigeo Okumura, Blue Panther, Maximo, Ray Mendoza Jr., Heavy Metal, Mictlan [cage, hair]
Escapes:
1) Mictlan
2) Heavy Metal – dived out of the cage onto Mictlan
3) Blue Panther
4) Okumura
5) Terrible
6) Maximo
7) Shocker
8) Texano
COMMERCIAL BREAK.
?) Ray Mendoza Jr.
?) Negro Casas
– Garza and Warrior both do dives instead of leaving.
11) Hector Garza
12) Black Warrior (!)
13) Yujiro
Final is Toscano vs Naito. For real. Crowd is about as thrilled as you’d expect.
Naito beats Toscano with a Tiger Suplex. I swear, the call was like “uno, dos…tres?” If you’re going to have the final two be THAT final two, that’s actually the right finish.
Earlier
1) Flash, Metalico, Stuka Jr. vs Euforia, Skandalo, Virus
2) Hijo del Fantasma, La Mascara, Sagrado vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

KrisZ missed the show due to watching his Braves finally lose to the Dodgers!
how much does arena mexico usually draw for big shows?
Even Cubs can’t be bothered to correctly name the Japanese duo!
Was Naito the one that fell asleep at the press conference?
On to something more important. We didn’t cubs’ website this time!
i’m happy with ending. didn’t expect Toscano to lose his hair to No Limit.
THEY HAVE NAMES DAMNIT! THEY HAVE NAMES PEOPLE!
I wonder if this sets in motion Toscano’s return to the rudo side. It’s been a few months, he’s beyond due for his usual twice a year turn.
@Rob: i don’t think it was that disappointing. no one expected toscano to lose.
So No Limit got a push, and will probably lose their hair in a double hair match in September.
@Rob: that was him.
@LLL: You were not expecting Obama to win… are you happy?
=p
I think it’s pretty disapointing considering you can’t name the guy who won.:P
And Chui comes through with the greatest post ever!
On a positive note, Mictlan going out first means that CMLL thinks everyone considers him the weaker guy.
@Rob: @Rob: No Limit #2
@Rob: Was it Naito or Yujiro who won?
Am I reading this right, there was a commercial break during the cage match on the audio show? That seems like a weird time to take a commercial break whether it be audio, video or twitter.:)
@xuisaw: Sure. Now everyone gets to see that everything I said about him was true.
@Alfredo: El otro japones won. Not EL JAPONES… EL OTRO.
@Rob: I bet they don’t even know. When photos pop up online its going to be Okumura.
It seems this aired on Televisa Deportes Network… bad… better said, awful way to kick start a network.
Did they mention this was airing on TV at all last week? It’d be the kind of thing you might want to promote…
@xuisaw: Did anyone watch it? Just wondering if it was brought up elsewhere by someone who might have watched it live, which I’m doubting at the moment.
It seems guys in the Mexican boards saw it, but were surprised to do so, so I guess they didn’t announced it, for all I know, maybe they’ll air all ArMex Friday shows live…
Televisa Deportes Networks is supposed to take over all cable companies, I got cable over here… but I don’t have a TV set.
They announced the live airing just before the cage match came on. Seriously. Corzo Cubby heard it too, and that was all. They didn’t even say what network. Just the channel number on SKY.
Pathetic that they didn’t even promote it.
@xuisaw: when you say take over all cable companies, you mean be available on all cable systems?
I don’t know how anyone can say CMLL is better than AAA now. This show just sounds pathetic. At least Panther didn’t lose although if he did, it could lead to a good rudo turn but CMLL isn’t that smart.
Yes, save probably MVS, but they’re saying TDN will go head to head with Fox Sports and ESPN all over the continent.
@xuisaw: It’s very possible. Televisa will tell cable companies that they have to carry TDN, if they want all the other Televisa channels.
@Tim: What’s the big deal? No one expected Toscano to lose, so it was a surprise. No Limit will get a push. If Mictlan or Maximo lost, it would be bad news.
FCW is at the Orlando Armory next Saturday. You might have to go, especially if Dos is working without the mask.
Mascara Ano 2000
Satanico
Perro Aguayo Jr.
Damian 666
Misterioso
Blue Panther
Texano Jr.
…
Naito.
@LLL, What’s the problem? Toscano sucks, that’s the problem. And it’s a problem when the announcers can’t even announce the winners name.
Oh and yes I’m going to FCW next week and plan to boo Dos.
My new favorite post is over on the SuperLuchas page where one guy says: “Dos Jr. would never give permission for the WWE to have him wrestle unmasked!”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Cesar says… 15mil in attendance…
OK, I’m definitely not sad that I didn’t decide to go to Arena Mexico tonight. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t make it here for this comment thread (if for no other reason than that it took me a lot of time to wade through 127 comments after it was over). And I’m pissed that CMLL couldn’t be bothered to announce somewhere (last week on TV, their website, commercials on cable networks) that they were airing live on Televisa Deportes Network. If they had, I might have taken the time to figure out that channel 501 on Cablevision was now TDN. But, why would they have wanted fans to know where and when to watch them?
@Rob: Can we at least hope for a Garza turn based on his not returning to help Toscano? Instead of a Toscano turn, can we just hope that he loses to the newly re-Rudo’d Garza and then fades into oblivion?
15000 for that show? What were the prices?
Anyway, I got home safe and sound, and from the looks of it, it’s for the best that I missed the finale on the radio. Highly doubtful, but was the tiger suplex finish a delayed homage to the late Misawa on the part of CMLL?
As far as Toscano losing, surprising but it sounds as though he was awful. Now, does Mistico save the day for Mexico and shave one of the Japs’ hair for the Anniversary show and avenge Toscano for all CMLL’s stripper gimmicks, or will he be doing the Terroristas Del Aire Subcomandante Marcos gimmick in a mask match with Negro Casas?
As far as CMLL’s website, take it with a grain of salt as far as tonight’s show goes:
ARENA MÉXICO
VIERNES 31 DE JULIO DEL 2009
20:30 Hrs.
PROGRAMA
EVENTO GRABADO PARA
LA TV POR TELEVISA CANAL 9 GALAVISIÓN
NO MENTION AT ALL of the main event being on Sky.
@ Alan: Since when does CMLL do ANYTHING logically? Had this been Vince, he’d have plastered all his TV with advertisements for this show and shilled the hell out of PPV.
Instead, CMLL seems to only give a damn about what the gate for the show was. It’s somewhat sad that a bunch of guys that frequent this blog seem to care more about this show than most of CMLL’s target audience. It’s 2009, not 1979.
@J. Corzo Cubby: It wasn’t a PPV, but your point is well taken. Televisa deserves as much blame, if not more, than CMLL.
I guess only Alan will understand it… during the Puebla singles match with Ultimo Guerrero and Garza, Hector “won” even though Ultimo clearly kicked out at 2, then they went on lengthy promos of “I earned the title shot” when it didn’t make sense since it was a screw finish…
So, explaining what happened, the ref blew it again and gave the reverse finish… Toscano was to win but it turned out being otherwise because of the referee screwing it up.
Now, the universe can resume normally.
CMLL drawing 15k for this is awesome – because this is kicking off the build for Anniversario.
I’d guess right now we are looking at three big possible matches for that show(s)
– Mistico v Negro Casas – hairs, or maybe IWGP jr title?
– No limit vs garza/toscano?
– Shocker vs someone of hairs
If CMLL doesn’t have a tv deal where ratings=more revenue, but rather just a flat fee to air the show, WHY would they book specifically for tv? That is the major difference between CMLL and AAA no one here seems to get.
@Nikita: Sponsors? For CMLL, more viewers has to help attract sponsors at the best price possible. They sell the ring mat(Corona), the ramp(Tolteca, Sherwin Williams), the apron(digital with roll sign), the edecanes(AU), the floor at Coliseo(ZUM?).
@LLL: Plus, if they were using TV correctly (since they are going to be on anyway) it might help drive interest in the product and bring people out to the Arena.
@Nikita: And to pile on…
The idea for TV is to make stars so you can get huge crowds when you send guys like La Mascara and Fantasma Jr. to headline a small building in Veracruz against Sangre Azteca and Dragon Rojo.
I’m very happy CMLL drew 15,000 or so for a terrible show that had nothing going on but what happens on Tuesday when only 2,000 fans come to Arena Mexico? Or next Sunday at reduced prices when only 3,000 show up? You should be using TV properly to hype these shows and the feuds taking place on them so you aren’t just worrying about Friday drawing well since you have three shows a week in your main buildings that have the ability to draw well.
So…
1. Sponsors
2. Overall attendance
3. Creating stars
4. TV = credibility (just ask Perrito and all the “stars” that ceased to be “stars” when they worked his non-TV shows)
I think you may be the one missing the point of why we complain about how CMLL does business.
well, at least CMLL has the sponsors part mastered. you’re right, it would be great if they could develop stars too. sadly, their flagship program on televisa is horrible, while Ras de Lona does a good job of explaining and creating interest, but few see that show. if the flagship program is garbage, the entire promotion suffers.
BTW, cmll.com has video of the cage match already (but no new lineups, full results or a news update). You can get the video on the main page in 3 parts.
Toscano really didn’t have as much hair as I remembered. He should be able to grow it back in 3-4 weeks unless he keeps shaving it for effect.
Metal’s cage dive was neat.
There was a ref bump in the singles match so technically Toscano “won”.
@LLL: Chui has mentioned (over at DVDVR, when he use to post there) that he doesn’t think CMLL has any direct involvement in doing the Ras de Lona show outside of them covering CMLL, but don’t you think it would be nice to have on the CMLL website a link to the show that explains the latest happenings in CMLL?
I rarely watch Ras de Lona on and it would be cool to just have it on their site. Might bring more hits. Kinda like with AAA claiming a bunch of people watch their streaming video, when in reality, if you visit their site, it automatically starts up (which can be a pain in the arse since it always seems to be the AAA show from Japan).
@Rob: Thanks for mentioning the videos. Have they been doing this often or are these the first videos in a long time? Every time I visit their site, when I think they’ve added videos, I click the “Video” link that leads to nowhere.:(
@Alfredo:
Hey that win didn’t count, we were missing our infield except Chipper.
Of course CMLL has direct involvement in the Ras de Lona show. CMLL provides their arenas(so the show isn’t done in a studio like 3ra Caida), their footage(the clips seen in the highlights, and the old clips, like the ones we saw from older “Infierno” shows to build last night’s show), and most of all, CMLL coordinates for their top stars to be available for interviews each week.
You can watch Ras de Lona on blip.tv. Cubs usually gives the link each week.
As for blaming CMLL for not publicizing the broadcast of “Infierno”, I blame Televisa even more. What could CMLL do at this point? CMLL is not a media giant like Televisa.
Look for a replay of “Infierno” on TDN as filler. Hopefully, they’ll be smart enough to announce an encore during CMLL today.
So “Infierno” was over by 10:30 local time due to the time constraints of airing live on TDN? Interesting. At least no one missed their metro ride home.
I forgot my user name and password at dvdrv, tried to register but never got the confirmation mail.
I don’t think Ras de Lona was up when I was entering the DVDRV board though… or at least I’ve never seen (like everyone else) it as it is on MVS.
CMLL has sponsors far from mastered, they only use them as if all the world is ArMex, once you hire a AAA show, they connect you with Corona and COMEX and whatever sponsors they have and they help you out, for instance, CORONA will run ads on local tv for your show and provide you with chairs/bleachers, etc, and COMEX will help with the flyers and sell tickets in their stores.
If you hire CMLL, you are on your own, Corona or whoever will still help you out but you need to go to them, and might get a lesser deal. In fact, it was the sponsors going to CMLL what made it work at first, but once the initial promotions ended, most sponsors chose not to follow (Wall-Mart,Pepsico, NESTLE,etc), it seems they have mostly local sponsors now.
CMLL has more and more sponsors each year. Maybe they haven’t “mastered” it, but they are doing a good job of attracting and retaining sponsors.
For a local promoter, it might be better to be on his own, instead of being obligated to honor existing sponsorships for CMLL or AAA. He might be able to get a better deal locally. For example, in Tijuana, TECATE has always sponsored local shows.
I think you misunderstand my point.
CMLL owns their buildings, and their bread and butter is getting people to the buildings, as they make the $ on tickets, concessions, and probably merchandise too. In fact, I bet they make more from concessions, etc than tix. Like it or not, AAA doesn’t have that kind of revenue stream, because they just rent a building.
Could CMLL use the tv outlets better to increase their draw? For sure. But, at the same time they could also be selling their own merch, dvds, etc., and they aren’t.
Mexico never had “territorial” television that hyped arena shows. AAA has jumped into the modern WWE tv format. CMLL isn’t suddenly going to have tv geared towards building their houses, or episodic tv like AAA.
For good or bad, all CMLL cares about is selling tickets via traditional means.
Now I’m even more confused.
I watched CMLL on Televisa and Cadena Tres. Both shows hyped upcoming CMLL live events. Televisa hyped Coliseo, Leon, and Guadalajara with dates, times, and lineups. I think Cadena Tres just hyped the Tuesday taping.
I agree that CMLL television lacks in building feuds. Needs to be episodic. And it can be episodic without looking like AAA or WWE.
Now that MVS/DISH are going to offer PPV, I’d look for Televisa to be nicer to CMLL.
As far as merch, dvd’s, etc……I thought they had a toy deal.
