Mexico preview, Acapuclo, pre-Expo notes

CMLL (FRI) 07/24 Arena Mexico
1) Astro Boy & Sensei vs Artillero & Super Comando
2) Angel Azteca Jr., Angel de Oro, Tigre Blanco vs Euforia, Loco Max, Skandalo
3) Mascara Dorada vs Dragon Rojo Jr. [lightning]
4) Blue Panther, Hector Garza, Toscano vs Naito, Ray Mendoza Jr., Yujiro
5) La Mascara, Mistico, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Negro Casas, Ultimo Guerrero
6) Shocker vs Texano Jr. [NWA LH]

Previews: Notimex, Reforma via Manana, Record, and Ovaciones, ESTO. Everyone focuses on the big title mathc, though at least one notes Mistico has a five week winning streak on the line.

Texano is 4-1 in Arena Mexico singles matches, winning the G1 Juniors tournament back in 2005, and losing the Universal championship a month ago. Shocker is 15-14. He’s won masks and hairs, and he’s defended titles, but he’s never won a singles title in Arena Mexico.

Texano losing two straight big matches would kind of establish him as a bit lower than they seem to want. Plus, he ought to have some back up here (even if none of the other Avernos are booked) to help him sneak by. I think he’s retaining, what do you think?

CMLL (WED) 07/22 Arena Coliseo Acapulco [Eventa Acapulco]
1) Guerrero & Titere b Factor Miedo & Fenix
2) Lady Apache & Marcela b Amapola & Princesa Sujei
3) Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata, Maximo b Hooligan, Misterioso II, Skandalo
4) Hector Garza, Mistico, Toscano DQ Ephesto, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
5) La Sombra & Volador Jr. b Averno & Mephisto [CMLL TAG]

Rudos won the first fall. In the second, the recap notes there were 2 or 3 points where the rudos had a tecnico pinned, the ref counted 2 and stopped for a kickout, except the tecnicos never actually kicked out. Kinda turned the crowd on the tecnicos. Negro yanked Mistico’s mask in the semi main.

The movie about Solar is one of the highlights of today’s opening day of the Lucha Libre Expo. Solar also main events Pancracio show. Originally, he was supposed to face Negro Navarro, then Villano III, but Villano’s out with an injury and it’ll be Black Terry instead.

ESTO mentions a Hijo de Lizmark film. Sounds like a good idea, probably disappears in the end.

Proyeccion Luchistica talks to Hijo del Fantasma about his title win.

Cesar updates the records for all 15 in the cage match.

SuperLuchas previews their booth at the Expo (starting today), and announces ticket prices for the X-LAW show.

Segunda Caida checks out IWRG 07/09/09.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update from Wednesday and Thursday, plus Rob on C3 from 05/31/08.

  1. I think the streak w/ tecnicos winning/retaining championships ends , as Texano Jr. will win tonight . The Lightning Match could be good, Semi-final looks like it could be AWESOME . But aside from Blue Panther the Tercera looks horrible. Maybe Televisa will do us all a favor and air the Lightning match instead.

  2. I agree…. Dorada vs Rojo could be awesome.
Texano retains, but I think Shocker has a good chance of winning in the cage next week.

  3. I took Texanito to retain and make everyone think he is losing his hair next week b/c he was given the big win. Don’t expect a clean finish. Figure someone interferes and however it goes down it will lead into who loses his next week, i.e. Garza accidentally costs Shocker the title match and then Shocker takes his hair next week. (that was a random example)

    HOWEVER.

The stupid thing to do would be to give the most historic title in Mexico to Shocker with his reputation so I could see CMLL doing it b/c they are fucking retarded. So the one person who officially picked Shocker is a smart dude.

Off to ROH, wishing Demon Jr. had stayed an extra few days to have the classic rematch with Adam Pearce Shirt!

  4. Here are some random notes from day one of the Expo.

My fandom moments of the day first. I took the time to get autographs and/or pictures from Perro, Damian, Mathematico, Blue Demon Jr., Fabi, Silver King, Dark Angel, Crazy Boy, and Lizmark Sr. My biggest misses were Zorro (long line, and the one time I thought about it, he was called in for the inauguration), and Atlantis (super long line). I probably should have taken the time to get Super Fly, Laredo, and Marco, but they were all signing when there were other things going on I was interested in.

Mot amusing thing of the day was suddenly noticing that Damian was working behind the counter of the Perros booth. Most odd thing of the day was noticing that Dark Angel and Princess Sugei were both hanging out selling stuff and signing autographs at the DTU booth. Not sure if they weren’t allowed to sell there stuff with CMLL because it wasn’t CMLL licensed or what, but they both had DTU on their credentials. Thing I’m most disappointed I missed was the inauguration. Walked in as it was ending and realized that there were representatives from all of the companies in the ring together. Would have been a great photo opp to get Perro, Atlantis, Zorro, Demon and others all in one shot. Favorite purchase was a “WWF” tshirt which just had “WWF” at the top and then a world wildlife fund panda logo hitting another wwf panda over the head with a chair.

Posting notes from what I caught of the shows in a separate post to keep this from getting too out of control long.

  5. OK, didn’t stay in the main ring area for all of the shows like I had planned. It turns out that almost six hours of lucha is a lot (even after making it through Triplemania) and there were other things I wanted to see and do. So, here is what I caught of the first three shows today.

    El Pancrio
Opener was a trios match featuring teams that did not match up with what was listed on the program. From what I could understand tecnicos were Look Man, Fuerra Negra, and someone whose name I never got and rudos were Espiral Negro and two other guys whose names I didn’t catch. Tecnicos won a single fall match.
Tournament was at least as confusing as it sounded. By my count there wound up being 21 luchadors in it. They started out with two and entered at somewhat regular time intervals (I thought announced as 2 minutes, but seemed shorter than that). The rules wound up being somewhat close to how they were described I think, but its hard to say how many people wound up in each of the three sections. I’m not going to try to recap who all was in the match, but the final four were Hermano Muerte, Jr, Pinocho 3000, Rambo, Jr, and Super X. Pinocho was eliminated by Rambo, Rambo was eliminated by Super X, and Hermano Muerte, and Hermano Muerte was eliminated by Super X. But, now that I think of it, the match may have been for the Super X belt and that might not have been the guy’s name. But he had X’s on his outfit and I could never quite make it out so that was as close as I could come.
Super Muneco, Super Astro, Super Pinocho, and Rocky Santana beat Rambo, Coco Rojo, Coco Verde, and Cocolores. Pretty fun match (I think my favorite on this card at least). Hair/Mask challenges after the match which I know is hard to believe.
As reported above, Black Terry replaced Negro Navarro and then Villano III in the main and lost to Solar. Solar got a trophy for his efforts. Not a bad match, but nothing spectacular either.

    Luchas de Antano
Cibernetico ended with Destroyer (I think) over Bengala. Some fun stuff in this match. Is this the same Bengala who worked a few dates for CMLL?
Oro, Plata, and Bronce won their match. Missed the intros, so I’m guessing that their opponents were the listed Aguila Venzolana, Impana, and Memo Arenas as listed. Oro, Plata, and Bronce looked pretty good.
Negro Navarro was not around for the semimain. Shu El Guerrero wasn’t either, but he seemed to be moved up to the main (not sure if this was the case with Navarro as well since I missed the main). El Matematico was replaced by Ultraman. Guy from the commission seemed to be worried about the ring before the match. Looked like he was signaling that there was a bad/uneven spot. Ring ropes had also looked pretty loose for the first two shows. I left to wander around some at the beginning of this match and intended to get back in time for the main, but wound up missing it too. I was kind of excited to see Mil/Fantasma/Dos wrestle. Not that I was expecting anything out of them, but just to say that I had seen them once.

    IWRG
Ring ropes look tighter here. Didn’t see if they fixed the ring itself too, but everything seemed to work better. Might have been some better workers helped too.
    Skipped the opener
Yack and Rigo took the first and third falls to beat Nemesis and Capitan Muerte. Yack is always better than I expect him to be. He probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves due to his gimmick. Capitan Muerte was also good leading to a solid all around match.
Tramas and Chico Che vs Officials and Fantasma de la Opera was what it was. I was hoping for more from this match, but the strap match stip got in the way. Pretty sure the tecnicos won when the rudos ran to the back.
IWRG vs Super X results in Negro Navarro wrestling. I’m still impressed with Angelico and think he can continue to develop into a solid worker. Not as impressed with Megatronix. Juventud, Fuerza, and Veneno were good enough to make the match work up until the end when it seems like they were disqualified for excessive violence on Navarro. Traumas and Super X wrestlers run in for a brawl.
I couldn’t get myself to stick around for the main. Just not excited about Ricky Cruz and the Capos, so I headed out to find a cab.

Fun first day, but hopefully things pick up for days two and three. TVC Deportes announcers were there taping the IWRG show.
