TripleMania Press Conference: show will be PPV only, Wagner’s signed with AAA (except the signing part), go away Fantasma

AAA held a press conference yesterday in Salon Iturbide at Centro Banamex to hype up the matches next Saturday’s show. Not too big of a surprise that some of the more interesting news to come out of it was about stuff around the show. There’s already decent coverage of the show, with probably a lot more coming in the next ten days. If you want one really good place for a run down of what was talked about, LuchandoLibre is easily the best.

For all of us who follow AAA from outside Mexico, the biggest news has to be that we won’t be able to see the show (legally, anyway.) Like last year, TripleMania will be on PPV. Unlike last year, TripleMania will NOT be shown on weekly TV after the fact. They’re planning to sell the show a special DVD after (most of their DVDs have been 5 hours cut down to 2h30m, so I think that’s what they mean by special) but it’s either that or the PPV. Even on the PPV, you will not get all the matches; the show will start at 8:30, and the PPV at 9, so the opener (Fuerza Aerea/Clowns, officially) and maybe more will only be for the live crowd.

This explains why they scheduled the Ecatepec and Orizaba tapings so soon after TripleMania; they’ll have to post-produce the first of those in four days to get in on air that week, since TripleMania won’t air. There is a note that, sometime later, TripleMania will be shown on AAA’s website. They did something similar last year, but it was behind Televisa’s Mexico-only wall and don’t remember hearing much about people actually using it.

This is a good place to note that I plan on running live coverage next Saturday on the website, including another chat. Last year, we were able to find video of the show as it was going. Can’t promise it’ll be the same this year, but wouldn’t be surprised.

There was plenty of other news about the usual stories:

Dr. Wagner Jr. actual contract status with AAA is murky. Both Wagner and AAA say he’s close to actually signing, where he’d still be running WagnerMania shows but with AAA wrestlers, but he has NOT actually signed. This seems bizarre; if Wagner has not actually signed, there’s nothing stopping him from reaching a deal with CMLL right this moment (or the Friday before TripleMania) and returning there. Either AAA believes CMLL is now so done with Wagner that they wouldn’t make such an offer, or this contract drama is now a work on some level to add something to the title match.

AAA believes the DF Commission has no authority to ban Jack or Konnan: Joaquin Roldan says to Record that Fantasma has no training or power to actually do the things he’s talked about doing, and just wants to get his name in the newspapers. Related: Cesar notes Fantasma takes actions against CMLL all the time, they’re just not talked about as much. Didn’t know Stuka got in trouble for kicking Mima, thought Rey/Ephesto being stopped was more about the angle than the commission (but have only seen the highlights so far.)

The losing captain of the Zorro/X-Pac match will be caned 10 times. Yes, this is Sandman vs Tommy Dreamer from ECW. However, the important difference between this bit and the usual AAA homages to stuff elsewhere long ago is you don’t have to know about the original match to understand this one. This whole feud started when X-Pac turned on the Legion and caned, the Legion responding by beating up X-Pac, with Zorro caning X-Pac so hard and so many that it left scars, and every thing since then about X-Pac wanting to get his caning revenge. This all makes perfect sense.

Other notes
– no Konnan. no word why.

– 55% of the tickets have been sold, and they’re hoping to sell out all 17,000 seats.

– Kenzo had an awesome shirt.

Silver King wore his mask to the press conference, was annoyed with people asking if he’s going to wear his mask in the match, and accused Dr. Wagner and Santo of living off their father’s works, plus the usual anti-La Parka stuff. Wagner would just like Silver King to stop dressing like him.

– A trailer for the AAA movie will be shown (presumably a new one), and the video game will be offically announced to come out before the end of the year.

– A unknown percentage of the revenue will be donated to Rebeca de Alba’s foundation to help children with cancer. Blue Demon Jr.’s done work with her and this group in the past.

(The rest of the news will be up later.)

Mistico: Put me in a big main event or I’ll leave (maybe)

Today, Mistico is complaining to Record about how he’s a really big star and CMLL isn’t getting 100% out of him because they refuse to put him in apuesta matches. Mistico specifically complains he’s not headlined a major show since in well too long.

03/20/09: Villano V vs Ultimo Guerrero [mask]
10/17/08: Marco Corleone vs Lizmark Jr. [hair]
09/19/08: Villano V vs Blue Panther [mask]
05/23/08: Heavy Metal vs Toscano vs Perro Aguayo Jr. [hair]
12/07/07: Lizmark Jr. & Shocker vs Black Warrior & Rey Bucanero [hair]
09/28/07: Lizmark Jr. vs Blue Panther, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Villano V, Dr. Wagner Jr., Último Guerrero, Místico, Atlantis [cage, mask]
03/30/07: Marco Corleone vs Universo 2000
09/29/06: Mistico vs Black Warrior – this is the one the article cites

Mistico threatens to leave CMLL and go to Japan or WWE, but he wants to be treated like a king wherever he goes. I don’t know about Japan, but I’m pretty sure I know how that’d go down in WWE (not so well.)

I doubt very much he’s going anywhere, but this is a strange interview to do. The biggest problem is Mistico very much appears to be already getting exactly what he wants; everyone expects the anniversary main event to be Mistico vs Negro in a mask versus hair match (with stuff like Shocker/Dos existing as back up plans if someone gets hurt.) Even more, it’s not like CMLL has been overlooking Mistico otherwise – he surely would’ve main evented the anniversary show versus Perro last year if not for injury, and he’s in the main event 3/4ths of the time he wrestles in Arena Mexico (and about 100% everywhere else.)

If Mistico think he’s being mistreated compared to anyone else, he desperately needs some perspective. He could also learn to be a big more humble and finding better ways to make these complaints than thru the press, where they’ll only ultimately cause him hard. Mistico’s got away with this before and may get away with again because he’s MISTICO, but the day’s quickly approaching when he’ll just be the guy who used to be Mistico (ask Shocker about that) and these things will come back to bite him.

The only sane explanation for this is CMLL decided to go with Shocker/Dos instead for the Anniversary show, and then maybe an explosion like this was warranted. But I can’t believe even CMLL sees rudo Dos as something to get behind to that degree.

In other Reforma articles, Konnan is not just banned from wrestling at TripleMania, but from stepping foot in the arena. Yea, that’s not going to work. Silver King is meeting with the commission tomorrow, and it sounds like they’ll let him off with a public apology and a promise not to wear his mask again. Jack’s still banned as well – though apparently not in as much trouble, because they’ve decided Konnan’s more to blame – and Fantasma says he met with Dorian Roldan to go over all of this a couple days ago.

Tuesday notes, Mistico in champs tournament, AAA upcoming tapings, Pierroth

Today’s Fan Apperciation Day in Arena Mexico, with Shockercito vs Pequeno Damian 666 in a hair match. Tecnico is always the favorite, but this one could go either way. Shockercito’s won his last hair match two months ago, Mini Damian lost his first hair match but has won the last two.

Horus also debuts today, and we lack almost any info on him compared to some of the recent arrivals. (Anyone seen Hijo de Sicodelico since his match?) Over on el Martinete, there’s a repost of an interview which doesn’t reveal much, but he claims to have been wrestling for 15 years. Over on Box Y Lucha, there’s a post suggesting this is someone who has been previously wrestling as Hijo de (something).

This week’s Ras de Lona lists Mistico, Mephisto and Epehsto among the eight in Block B of CMLL Universal tournament. Mistico did a promo earlier in the show hyping up that Kid’s Day show teasing a match with Pesta Negra, so perhaps this was a late change. The show talks with some of the participants, plus No Limit.

AAA lists taping for 06/17 (Ecatepec) and 06/20 (Orizaba). That’d be 3 tapings in a week, and that last taping would air about 3 weeks after.

Did Espectro get brought back by AAA? Not sure who’s working as La Chiva at the moment.

Jack’s still teaming with Teddy on the spot shows.

Box Y Lucha’s lineups has the four title matches AAA has on it’s site, but it also has an “also appearing” list of wrestlers. Based on what we’ve been told so far, and who’s left, it’s pretty easy to put things together. Of course, everything’s subject to change until it happens.

Match by match, and note that I’m totally guessing on card order

  1. Minis have been added to the opener. This is Gran Apache’s return after Billy attacked his leg and put him out on 03/04 (though he’s been wrestling off TV in the interim and the injury hasn’t really been brought up much.) Long term plan here seems to be Sexi/Fabi in a mask/hair match, but the goal here should be a good match to start off the show
  2. This isn’t going to be the end of the winning streak either. If the story stays as it has, Super Fly probably has his big fall out with his partners.
  3. There was some thought the commission would have some problem with a ladder/hardcore match, but they seemed okay with Vamp/Mesias last year. This’ll be the stunt show of the night. It’d be quick to do a title change.
  4. More Zorro/X-Pac. The article on the website teased some special stip, so maybe there will be something to seperate this from the other trios they’ve done in this feud. Cuervo replaced Scoria along the way. Maybe Scoria gets added back to give Elegido a way onto the show, since he appears to have gone from being in a co-main event to not being at all.
  5. Why not have Marco and Latin win? Maybe they can get some press out of it, but it’s not like anyone’s really done much memorable with the tag titles when they’ve had it, and at least this duo would be less likely to lose all their non-title matches.
  6. Would Wagner agree to come in if he was not going to be the man? I know my answer to that, though there’s still some wiggle room between “was clearly the victor” and “actually won the match”
  7. Legion has had their six months of fun, and I don’t what there’s left to do if they’re all in control. I just don’t know what they’re going to do next either way – the old status quo of Roldan running AAA and Konnan trying to take over but inexplicably still on the show has been done, and sliding back to it would be lame. Konnan really needs to disappear off TV for a while to sell the trimpuht, but that doesn’t sound like something this company would do.

2009 AAA TV Chart
Projected Air Date (#892)
Mexico: 06/14
US: 07/04 (hmm, maybe not exactly on THAT day)

Last stop before TripleMania. Note that this will the day after TripleMania in Mexico, so they’re only building that show for TV purposes here.

Main event is a relevos increidble. Given the four they had in, kinda surprised they didn’t team up the Wagner brothers, but perhaps they don’t want to tease that if they’re not going to follow up.

Semimain is Team Roldan vs Team Legion. Normally, that’d mean the finish here is the opposite of what’s going to happen in the cage.

Clowns facing guys they’ve beat, though not exactly in that combination.

First time the Aerostar/Fabi relationship has been addressed in a while, though that may be more about building to the cage match.

Minis match is presented by Guapito, and El Brazo will be special referee.

I think I’ve worked out the complete TripleMania card; will post it later.
