previews: ESTO, ESPNDeportes, Ovaciones, Luchando Libre

Averno sees the title match as the next step in their plan to destroy the Guerreros forever, and threatens to send UG and Atlantis to the hospital just like Ephesto sent Rey.

Had a lot of thoughts about the main event, but they’re not coming to me now. I think the decision for who wins the main is based on what CMLL decides needs to be established more – a new top rudo or a new title. Early on, it made more sense to me to make the title, so that when someone like Texano won it down the road, it actually meant something. That was before it this title was mentioned as a once a year title – it’s not going to be AAA’s mega title – and before Dos took off. If it’s just going to be that meaningless from tomorrow on, then CMLL might as well do something meaningful with it tonight by having Texano go over.

UG’s already a couple weeks away from getting a another title match win to prove he’s the best – he’ll probably beat Shocker for the heavyweight title whenever they run the next Tuesday Fan Appreciation show. This is just another win for UG, this would be a big meaningful win for Texano. He’s got three hairs wins since coming to CMLL, but they’ve come in Puebla, at the end of a cage match, and in GDL. Both his more recent title wins were in Guadalajara, so what triumphant he’s had haven’t made TV. (Before this tournament, the only Arena Mexico singles match he had was the final of the G1 Junior tournament, which I forgot existed until now.)

The concern about this I had last week was kinda the same reason why it’d be meaningful – Texano hasn’t beat anyone important, so it’s a big story telling that suddenly he can defeat Ultimo Guerrero in one night, while not making it look like Texano was just given a win.

(I’m also not totally sure CMLL would do a Texano win in a meaningful way – thinking back just to a few weeks ago with the Averno/Blue Panther finish, where Averno hit 2 Devil’s Wings and Panther would’ve lost nothing by losing, but instead kicked out and they did a completely worthless distraction spot for the pin five seconds later. Do the same here, and you’re wasting a big win.)

Probably stopped making sense at least three paragraphs ago. I think I’d like to see Texano win, but expect UG to win, and just hope for a good match either way. What do you think?

Special guest at the show today: SpongeBob, celebrating his 10th anniversary in July.

Mistico’s fifth anniversary celebratory march to church did not occur without issues. He was
prohbitted from entering the church with his mask on, which you would think someone would check before doing this bit. It was all worked out and he was permitted to go in with his mask. Besides that, it sounds like it went well. Mistico was accompanied by fans, and wrestlers – Dr. Karonte, Astro Boy, and (strangely) Averno and Mephisto. For so many reasons, that makes no sense and perfect CMLL sense. Record add Sagrado, Brazo de Oro and Brazo de Platino to the list, and counts the fans as 100. ESTO’s article is so great because it not only mentions his pre-Mistico gimmicks but it also notes him winning the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Wrestler of the Year award.

(via SickMistico @ box y lucha) Dr. Morales column in Record says Cibernetico will return to AAA promptly, because he’s not making money as an independent. I guess we’ll know Saturday.

Mesias will be signing autographs for winners on the AAA website before tomorrow’s taping. Billy Boy will be nowhere.

SuperLuchas is running a contest: suggest Dos’ debut angle for WWE. The winner will be picked by Dos, so suggesting “just randomly thrown out on TV with no build up” probably won’t win.

Demon, Santo, and Mil are threatening to sue Airwave gum for using their images in an internet game to sell the gum.

Luchando Libre notes Matt Cross‘s mySpace says he’s in Mexico until the 24th. AAA?

Kcidis has a great cartoon of Wagner.

Ohtani’s Jacket checks out matches from 06/01/09 Puebla and IWRG 06/04/09

LuchaWorld has the first Slammin’ Stan and KrisZ’s news update.

CMLL (MON) 06/22 Arena Puebla
1) Asturiano & Centella de Oro vs Espiritu Maligno & Sauron
2) Amapola, Mima Shimoda, Yezca vs Estrella Magica, Lady Apache, Sahori
3) Flash, Pegasso, Stuka Jr. vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Skandalo
4) Hector Garza, La Sombra, Volador Jr. vs Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
5) Mephisto, Terrible, Texano Jr. vs La Mascara, Shocker, Toscano

25 thoughts to “preview for tonight, Mistico to mass, Ciber back to AAA?”

  1. I think Ultimo Guerrero is winning tonight. Ultimo beating Texano which will prompt Averno challenging Guerrero for mask vs. mask. If this was AAA I would say after Guerrero win, Los Hijos del Averno in a rage decide to beat-up Spongebob after the match .;)

  2. Really, the only two things that must occur tonight are

    1) Spongebob and Monito interact somehow
    2) someone beats up SpongeBob

  3. @thecubsfan: Spongebob is a black belt in karate!

When I first read the post, I thought there was someone actually wrestling in Mexico in a Spongebob outfit (not that it hasn’t or will happen at some point) and had made his way to CMLL with that gimmick.

By the way, the guy who does the voice of Spongebob is a lucha fan. I’m sure most have heard he does some announcing on the Lucha Va Voom shows.

  4. I think Cibernetico may have already returned at Triplemania, we just haven’t found out yet ;P.

  5. I doubt Ciber wants to go back to AAA and doubt even more the Roldans would take him. Morales probably got mixed up with the thing of Ciber going when Konnan took the presidency but now that Roldan has it back, it would mean Ciber has no reason to be gone.

Isn’t Bob one week too late?

The decision on who wins depends on how good was Texanito during the trip(s) to Japan… and not necessarily wrestling… *L*

  6. @Alfredo: “When I first read the post, I thought there was someone actually wrestling in Mexico in a Spongebob outfit (not that it hasn’t or will happen at some point)”

There is a Bob Esponga on the indy circuit. I can’t find the LuchaWiki profile right now but I swear I updated a bio where he lost a stip match but the fans refused to let him take his mask off.

  7. @Rob: I just saw some clips of the cage match from AAAMania. That wasn’t Zorro at the end. Too big to be Zorro. My money is on it being Ciber.

  8. I took Ultimo b/c it would officially make the tournament beyond pointless so go CMLL! Make it happen!

The battle royale from last week which never made TV aired in clips on Tercera Caida and it looked pretty good. Figures they didn’t air it. Creative eliminations!

So today I read somewhere that there’s a Mexican festival coming to downtown Toronto in the middle of July. I looked up some info a few minutes ago and the festival is actually going to be centered around Lucha Libre. They’ll be showing movies and even having wrestling shows throughout the weekend with BLUE DEMON JR. and INCOGNITO headlining. 1 out of 2 ain’t bad I guess. If they bring the mini’s I’m gonna be so happy!

  9. @ Jake: I think it was Zorro. Definitely not Ciber as he’s got tatoos on his neck

  10. @thecubsfan: You reported this? Wow. I usually read everything but skip the links to non-interesting items, i.e. airwave gum lawsuit.

Ah, I see it now. Strange that I didn’t catch that.:/

  11. @Christi: I think it was Zorro aswell. The guy who did the run-in looked like Zorro (in my opinion) just 2006 Zorro. Plus if it wasn’t him the person would have un-masked afterwards.

  12. BTW, can someone help me out…

Veo TV put up a new internet promo saying the new start time for CMLL is 10am (in Spain). So when should I be expecting to see it? Lately it’s been airing at 4am EST but I’m not sure if they ran those new promos b/c the time slot changed or not.

  13. There’s already a post on the ByL forum about tonight’s show saying the attendance was only average.

  14. Show should be ending soon. Top three should make good tv tomorrow. Hopefully the segunda makes Fox Sports next week.

  15. @Alan: Agreed on everything. Cometa/Pegasso should be up this week against the Infernales/Vangelis on FSE but I think I’m more curious to see them against the Tuereg group.

Guerrero beat Texano in a supposedly clean match.

  16. @Rob: It will be good to see the Infernales get some TV time though.

Hope that Texano at least looks good in the match. So they decided to book surprise winners to the two blocks of the tourney, but then go with the obvious for the final? Awesome.

  17. Well the record is 2-4, and even better my predictions actually matched THE HAT. I just hope someone took a shot at Spongebob just for laughs .;)

  18. Perhaps related to the Cross myspace thing… Shiima Xion updated his that he is in Mexico City until the end of July.

  19. @thecubsfan: Veo TV jumped all the way back to the 3/9/07 Arena Mexico show last night and had two previously unaired matches:

    – Leono/Mictlan/Virus vs Dr. X/Ohara/Okumura
    – Dos Jr./Lizmark Jr./Volador Jr. vs Atlantis/Olimpico/Ultimo Guerrero
