Mexico Results, next week’s lineups

CMLL (FRI) 05/29 Arena Mexico [Ovaciones, ESTO]
1) Caligula & Messala b Astro Boy & Trueno
2) Arkangel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Polvora b Angel Azteca Jr., Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata
3) Pegasso b Hooligan [lightning]
4) Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca b Mascara Dorada, Maximo, Valiente
5) Dos Caras Jr., Tetsuya Naito, Yurijo b Hector Garza, La Sombra, Volador Jr.
6) Averno b Blue Panther [CMLL MIDDLE]

Very rudo night. Panther took the first fall of the main event, Averno evened it up, and both were going for submissions in fall three. Reports have Panther being in control, but cornerman Ephesto distracted him and Averno cradled Panther for the win. There may be a rematch coming. Ovaciones says the match went 40 minutes, which probably means about 20 minutes of bell to bell (and less than that airs.)

Sombra replaces Shocker. Dos & No Limit won easily, with Hector being strechered out.

No notes on the rest of the show.

LuchandoLibre has more on the new Santo exhibit, which Hijo del Santo thinks Santo wuold be surprised to find his movies are still popular.

Fuego en el Ring talked to Mictlan about his tag team title challenge (bringing the tag belts home to GDL) and Stuka about heading to Europe.

SegundaCaida watches 05/21’s IWRG. Ohtani Jacket writes about good wrestlers in bad matches.

Lineups when they go up.

Edit: and they’re up

CMLL (TUE) 06/02 Arena Mexico
1) Pequeno Universo 2000, Pequeno Violencia, Pequeno Warrior vs Bracito de Oro, Electrico, Fantasy
2) Horus, Pegasso, Rey Cometa vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Shigeo Okumura, Skandalo
3) Shockercito vs Pequeño Damian 666 [hair]
4) Blue Panther, Hijo del Fantasma, Sagrado vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) La Sombra, Mistico, Volador Jr. vs Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas

Horus is an Egyptian falcon-looking god. Not sure who he is here (random people have used the name, none consistently), but someone surely decided we needed another new guy. Hair match should be good, main is a rematch from this past week. This is a fan appreciation show.

CMLL (FRI) 06/05 Arena Mexico
1) Astro Boy & Bengala vs Caligula & Messala
2) Dark Angel, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, La Nazi, Princesa Blanca
3) La Mascara, Metro, Sagrado vs Heavy Metal, Misterioso II, Shigeo Okumura
4) Averno vs La Sombra, Sangre Azteca, Hijo del Fantasma, Dragon Rojo Jr., Mascara Dorada, Black Warrior, Texano Jr. [CMLL UNIVERSAL, torneo]
5) Hector Garza, Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Dos Caras Jr., Naito, Yujiro

People familiar with the mathematical concept called “counting” will note there’s eight wrestlers announced in the seven man tournament block. Left to come, based on the originally announced lineup:

  • Negro Casas
  • Rey Bucanero
  • Ultimo Guerrero
  • Volador Jr.
  • La Mascara
  • Hector Garza

That’s six, and they certainly could do a tournament of six if they wanted to. However, it’d be easy to replace Rey with Ephesto (title change), add Mephisto as 7, and Mistico as 8. They ought to announce that at some point if things have changed and that’s the case.

Note that this block has all three Poder Mexica members. Back when this tournament was announced, I think I only had Averno among these eight as a possible winner, but he’s not that far ahead of the rest of this bunch. Dorada and Dragon would be huge surprises, Texano and Fantasma would be mild surprises, but the only sure thing is the winner of this block is going to be an underdog with the winner of the second block.

Main event is a sort of rematch from the previous week. They’re very clear on building to No Limit vs Sombra/Volador, but that won’t be possible for a couple weeks at least.

90 thoughts to “Mexico Results, next week’s lineups”

  1. Is anyone recording/capping the ACM show? I’m leaving work in 10 minutes and by the time I get home the show will be over.

  2. ACM starts with La Momia/May Flowers/Pasion Cristal vs Tito Santana/Rio Bravo and Tiger Cota.

  3. Guy in front row has a Cubs shirt on. More people in the ring than in the crowd this week.

  4. This is actually from last week. The Purpara match should be on either this week or next week.

  5. The Beast is an awesome worker. He gets no respect just b/c of his look. I’ve always wondered who is under the hood and my guess is Esfinge.

Mascara Purpura continues to confuse me. He always looked great every time he showed up on Gimnasio Nuevo Leon shows and tonight he looked as good as I ever saw him in CMLL. It’s like he goes out of his way to work harder in Monterrey than he ever did in CMLL. If he never wanted to be there – why go in the first place?

Anyways, that was a really fun match.

  6. Wow, there is actually a fan in the front row wearing a Cubs shirt. Must be a shoutout to the blog.

  7. Never heard of the Beast, where’s he from? He looked pretty good.

Espiritu/Dance Boy vs Gladiador and Xtreme Tiger(or Tigger as they call him) is on now.

  8. They don’t even do in studio intros, in-ring intros, or wraps. I have a feeling we’re going to see a ten minute angle from the promoters office.

You guys watch more Lucha than me. Is this the worst Lucha show on television?

  9. It’s not as bad as it used to be. The In Studio intros they used to do were horrible.

  10. Hmmm, I don’t think I will ever wear a Cubs shirt to a lucha show (even as a shoutout to the blog), but if there was “official” luchablog gear available I would definitely wear it.

  11. LATV’s listings on their website clearly say CMLL is supposed to be on right now, but it’s Munoz Vale x 2. ???

  12. FWIW (and probably not much) – CMLL came out at 4AM CST. It’s still the rerun from earlier in the day, but it makes me think the schedule on the website is just off and the new episode is hiding somewhere. Will probably be taping random long streches to see if I can find out something.

  13. @Rob: Thanks for the link. Semimain seems more clipped than normal, but that could just be that I am now used to the leadins and outs that they normally air which are edited out here (along with the entrances). They still seem to have all the big spots from the match, but less than 8 minutes of in ring time seems shorter than I remembered. Still always fun to see how matches that I enjoyed live come off on TV though.

@LLL: Showing up on TV has always been a little weird to me. But, it is nice to have the youtube clips since they give me a chance to get friends and family who wouldn’t normally watch lucha to take a look. I’m in view on most of the hard camera shots since I was close to the entrance and show up on the Sobra/Volador/Mascara triple dive, but was more in view after the second fall of the main event which r0b3rt0×3L14S uploaded yesterday.

  14. Minis open up AAA. I hope they get added to Triplemania, but I’m not holding my breath. Would love to find a “Chihuahuenos del Mal” onesie for my daughter at the show, but they never seem to sell anything that small.

  15. @Alan: I was going to ask you what happened near the end of the semi-main? Sombra was in the ring with Lizmark Jr. and there was a giant edit forward to later in the match. Did they just cut to shorten the match or was something major blown? Usually 52MX only cuts leading into the fall, not during it.

@thecubsfan: Ugh… I remember the days when Telelatino in Canada used to carry Lucha Libre and in September ’97 they stopped showing it in it’s normal slot. I gave up hope after a month but then my friend claimed he saw it after a soccer game during the week so I went out and bought a 8 hour tape (the most I could find at the time) and just set the VCR to record non-stop for 8 hours while I was at school, 8 hours again when I came home and 8 hours at night. Never ended up finding it.

  16. @Rob: I had actually missed that cut on my first viewing. I don’t remember anything big being blown during the match. It seems like they just decided that for that match they were only going to worry about getting the high spots and the finishing sequences in. I have no idea why they gave the Pegasso/Cometta vs Tuereg three minutes more airtime than the semimain. I was not terribly impressed with that match live or in how it came off on TV. Airing all of Leono’s time (3 minutes) in the ring at the beginning of that match only to edit more out of the semimain makes no sense.

  17. I enjoyed the the first part of the cruiser match. Got distracted after the elimination, so I missed Kozlov and Tiger’s time.

  18. Fabi/Gato/Pimpi vs Sexy/Billy/Estrellas was a real fun match. Loving the Fabi vs Sexy/Billy feud.

And all those Mini’s need to leave AAA for CMLL, Especially Mini Abismo cause CMLL needs more rudo minis.

  19. I like the way they building towards Mesias vs. Wagner.

1 more week of television until Triplemania.

  20. @Tim: Billy Boy = the new Apache. He’s so amazing. He might end up being completely like Apache though as Apache was completely overlooked throughout his career until he was in his 40’s working AAA undercards vs Sevilla.

  21. At least he be working and be mostly on television FOR A LONG TIME. Most wrestlers would killed to know they will have long careers. Billy Boy is smart. Buff Bagwell just said he would work for the WWE for free, this guy at once was groom to be a huge star when the business was booming now he can’t get a job, the business is tough.

  22. By the way Rob, Did Aerostar disappear or get injured? I would think he’d be wrestling at Triplemania but it seems like Apache is.

  23. @Tim: Not sure what’s up with Aero Star. Could be an injury, could be they have him booked for a run-in at Triplemania or he could be on the list of Mexicans Konnan is ignoring this week.

  24. How odd that Buff Bagwell was mentioned on the ol’ luchablog – I’m wrestling him this Friday (6/5) in the Wheeling area at the Black Diamond Wrestling 6th Anniversary show.

  25. Munoz again. But during Mex2TheMax, they kept saying “a continuacion………CMLL”.

  26. It’s 5am. LATV is showing Mistico vs. Black Warrior(Coliseo), Purpura vs. Virus, and Women’s match.

  27. @Jake: Hey Jake…

Cubs will probably cover it more in-depth later tonight but amongst the hilarity at the Perros Del Mal/EAW show last night in Guadalajara was that the second ring broke and they had to spend an hour fixing it! *L* The backup plan? … They had Intocable dancing for the crowd in the meantime!

Pretty sure this seals the deal on EAW and the PdM at the same time with Ciber back in AAA, Wagner supposedly in AAA full-time and Perrito rumored to be rejoining CMLL soon enough with Aguila.

  28. Pretty sad. Both Ciber and Wagner no show. The ring breaks. It’s obvious the guys were killing themselves to get a reaction from an apathetic crowd. Record completely embarrassed and ashamed of their association with the show. The card features a who’s who of bigger name indy talent. If a card featuring all those guys can’t draw, then forget it! There’s no reason for Perrito to continue. Time to go back to CMLL!
