Major Mexico City area lucha shows canceled this weekend

Various outlets have this story, but I’ll point you to the Record story because it’s got the most complete list of cancellations I’ve seen. Shows listed as canceled include

  • Tonight’s Arena Mexico show – tickets can be turned in for a refund or for next week’s show
  • Sunday’s Arena Coliseo show
  • IWRG’s shows on Saturday and Sunday
  • AAA’s spot shows in Mexico City this weekend – being rescheduled for later

The cause of all this is a massive swine flu outbreak in Mexico City. At least 60 people are believed to have died as a result of this flu already. It passes from coughing and sneezing, so large gatherings are a bad idea. Schools are being shut down, it’s that sort of thing.

Record says that’s the only other time a Friday night Arena Mexico show was canceled was the 1985 earthquake. It’s not a good sign that we can compare this outbreak this to a natural disaster. Hope everyone in Mexico City reading this takes care of themselves this weekend. If this had to happen, at least it didn’t happen next week with all the Kid’s Day stuff.

The word is (CMLL has a new hi5 up) tomorrow’s CMLL TV show will air matches from Dos Leyendas in place of the usual action, though no UG/V5 yet. No idea what they’ll do for the MVS shows, but they’ve got a week to figure that out.

  1. CNN: Death toll is now at 68, and the virus is spread person-to-person. Atleast 8 Americans have been infected, but have NOT died.

  2. CNN: Two cases in Texas, and six in California. (Americans have not come in contact with any pigs.)

  3. by chance, is this effecting shows all over mexico? cause there is a scheduled AAA spot show in juarez this sunday.

  4. CNN was talking about Mexico City mostly, but over 1,000 people have been infected so they may cancel everything.

  5. that’s pretty freaking scary knowing what’s going on, i live here in el paso, right next to juarez, and i know that there have already been cases confirmed in juarez, so hopefully it’s something that they can find a cure for, and i definetly woundn’t mind passing up a show and hopefully they do take the safety precautions.

  6. @Rob: Wow. They might close the subways too. If you hear about the subways closings, let me know. I’m going to see if I can find anything on the subway. Thanks.

  7. My heart goes out to everyone in mexica aswell as the U.S.A.I hope the wrestling can start up again soon. But i know peoples lives must come first.

  8. @UMAARA: Mexican Health Dept is giving out masks(not Lucha masks, face masks covering the mouth), to help prevent further spreading of the swine flu. They think they have it under control b/c few new cases have been seen in the last day or so.

As far as the tv, they could make a dramatic in studio episode emphasizng how big it is that the CMLL Friday and Sunday shows are canceled, and mix it with never seen before footage, and promos talking about the situation. RdL will make something cool I hope. Telerisa? Nada.

  9. Soccer is not canceled, the games will be played with the doors closed. It’s probably worse as they could easily have played on Wednesday or Thursday but it seems they don’t expect the situation to be over by then, so maybe next weekend shows will get canned as well.

Even though the Health office said not to go out in the next (10) days, no one thought it was *that* serious as CMLL was intending to run the show but the government shut it down during the afternoon. Scalpers and Ticket master are laughing all the way to the bank, you might get your money back from CMLL (and most importantly from UNAM, who was having their second biggest match of the year this Sunday), but you won’t be seeing the the tip back.

We’ll have to wait and see (and hope it won’t) if the flu expands elsewhere, I’m hearing rumors of cases everywhere, but they’re probably just people with common flu and hysteria taking place.

  10. I just read that police are ordering sickly people off trains and buses. They should shut Metro down in Mexico City, as it’s the weekend anyway.

Soccer with “doors closed”. Does that mean we’re going to see the first ever empty arena match in soccer?

Pisses me off that the Associated Press does not mention the cancelation of Lucha, but mentions soccer in the article they put out earlier.

  11. Hope FMLL does not have trouble getting guys into the country. Wrestlers like to take the 8am flight instead of arriving the day before. You can bet they’ll pay paying extra attention to the flights coming from Mexico at US airports.

  12. LLL: That would not be the first empty arena/stadium match in soccer by any means. It happens in Italy a couple times a year and other countries as well, probably even Mexico though I’m not 100% sure on that part. But it usually occurs when a riot occurs and the home/away fans are banned for a certain amount of games [I know recently Napoli in Italy had this]. They called it a game behind closed doors. But it is usually a disciplinary action by the various football associations that do it due to crowd trouble at games.

On TV here they said that they were thinking of cancelling soccer and talked about how big the situation was if that was the case. Very sad and hopefully it is taken care of ASAP. There is enough to worry about without having to worry about the swine flu, first time I ever heard about it yesterday I believe.

  13. Yahoo has a story that Mexico has cancelled ALL public events suspended until further notice — including more than 500 concerts, sporting events and other gatherings including the popular weekly bicycle rides on streets closed to traffic.
