2008 Tapatia Awards Results

Hi!

These are the results for 2008 Tapatia Awards. Thanks to everyone who voted, and thanks for those who didn’t for reading this. We had 24 voters this year, a substantial increase over last year.

After last year’s ballot tended more towards AAA voting for the first time, this year snapped back towards CMLL voting. 6 of the categories were won by CMLL related candidates and 3 by AAA. For the first time in the five year history of these awards, 1 category was won by a non Big 2 candidate, as the Oficials ran away with Best Unit.

2008 will be remembered as the year of Blue Panther vs Villano V; it took three different awards and a second in another category. Other trends include Mistico continuing his domination of Best Tecnico while Best Rudo has a fifth different winner in as many years.

Comments included in the ballots are listed after each award. If I missed yours, or if you have more to say after seeing who won, feel free to post in the comments.

Full results from past years: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007

02/24: SLP, Shocker/UG

CMLL (WED) 02/18 Auditorio Miguel Barragan de San Luis Potosi [El Mojado @ el Martinete]
1) Lover Boy, Turbo-X, X-Turbo b Crazy Star, Mensajero, Tigre del Ring
2) Mascarita Dorada & Ultimo Dragoncito b Pequeño Damian 666 & Pierrothito
3) Dragon Rojo Jr. & Virus b Hijo del Faraon & Valiente
4) Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corleone, Mascara Dorada b Lizmark Jr., Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
5) Místico b Averno [CMLL WELTER]

Looks like one side of the building was full, but there was a completely empty section on the other side. Hijo del Faraon was hurt in his match.

ESTO previews tonight’s CMLL card and Dragon Rojo Jr. fighting Tuberculosis, vowing to defeat it in straight falls. I did not make that part up.

The big match is Shocker vs Utlimo Guerrero in a singles match. FWIW, they’ve faced before:

2002-12-13 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-02-07 Arena Mexico Shocker b Último Guerrero
2003-02-14 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-03-06 Arena Isabel de Cuernavaca Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-03-26 Arena Coliseo Acapulco Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-06-17 Arena Coliseo Shocker b Último Guerrero
2003-06-24 Arena Coliseo Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2004-01-24 Arena Xochimilco Shocker DQ Último Guerrero
2004-05-09 Arena Coliseo Shocker b Último Guerrero [NWA LH]
2005-02-13 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara Shocker b Último Guerrero [CMLL LH]
2007-01-15 Arena Puebla Shocker b Último Guerrero
2007-04-27 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker
2007-11-12 Arena Puebla Último Guerrero b Shocker
2009-02-24 Arena Mexico Shocker vs Ultimo Guerrero

7 wins for Ultimo, 6 wins for Shocker. Shocker could tie it up tonight! Again, if Shocker wins, he gets a title shot in the future, though no one knows when that day may be. (Note they even skipped around that topic on Ras de Lona.)

ROH is bringing in Blue Demon Jr., Incognito, and Magno to their Houston Wrestlemania weekend shows. It’d be nice if this went well, but I don’t see them mixing well with the ROH tpes. On the upside, Generico can finally team with his fellow Mexicans.

SuperLuchas looks back at Konnan going to WWF in 1991.

RFC says Jack Evans, Teddy Hart, Electroshock, Zorro and the Sect are advertised for the 03/22 TV taping in Monterrey.

LuchaWorld has Robert on IWRG 10/25/07 and Arena Coliseo Monterrey 2003, plus KrisZ’s update and 50-40 on the top 100 countdown. I’m shocked the most predictable comment ever hasn’t been posted yet.

03/06 CMLL Puebla Fan Appreciation Lineup (mini mask match)

CMLL’s announced the next fan appreciation show for Puebla:

CMLL (FRI) 03/06 Arena Puebla
1) Lady Apache & Sahori vs Mima Shimoda & Princesa Sujei
2) Hijo del Fantasma & La Mascara vs Dragon Rojo Jr. & Sangre Azteca
3) Marco Corleone, Mistico, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
4) Mascarita Dorada vs Ultimo Dragoncito, Pequeno Ninja, Pequeno Olimpico, Fantasy, Electrico, Nino de Acero, Bracito de Oro, Sombrita, Sauron[cage, mask]

Okay, issue 1: it’s listed as a 14 mask match, with only 10 names. Pierrothito and Pequeno Warrior were in Puebla last night, so they’re surely working this show too. Tzuki fits too. Maybe a mini Dinamitia to round out the numbers? (Maybe Mini Lizmark, unretired?)

They’re obviously trying to build up the numbers (though – why is a 14 mini match any bigger draw than an 8 mini one, presuming you’re just dropping the lesser 6?), because issue #2 is “who is Sauron?” If I get a vote, I’m voting for hypnotic pterodactyl gimmick over evil wizard gimmick. I would actually know this if I watched more of Puebla and IWRG, because a wrestler by that name turned up on both places from August to December last year.

Third cage match in 3 months. Kinda hitting that button a little hard. Also, since this is Friday, that means Mistico and crew won’t be in Arena Mexico – perhaps a Ultimo Guerrero/Blue Panther vs Villanos match?

Mistico (and Dragon Rojo Jr.) back in NJPW on 05/03

Ovaciones reports today that Mistico will be back in NJPW on 05/03. SuperLuchas had that over the weekend, but this article says he’s facing Jushin Lyger in a title match. The problem is, Lyger’s not IWRG Jr. champion currently. SoloLuchas also has this story but says challenging Tiger Mask IV. It’s probably whomever is the champion on May 3rd.

Dragon Rojo Jr. is also going for that show, which should also be entertaining and hopefully also good.
