01/04: Coliseo, Monterrey, Mistico back to Japan, Lineups

CMLL (SUN) 01/04 Arena Coliseo [Ovaciones]
1) Sensei & Starman b Artillero & Súper Comando
2) Cosmico, Electrico, Mini Fantasy DQ Pequeño Halloween, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Warrior
3) Fabián el Gitano, Máscara Púrpura, Máximo b Bronco III, Skandalo, Vangelis
4) Terrible, Texano Jr., Virus b Mascara Dorada, Sagrado, Valiente
5) Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero b Shocker, Toscano, Volador Jr.

Toscano did not get along with his partners on occasion. Shocker ended up in the main event as part of the Dos Caras shuffle; Sagrado was added to the semimain. Mini rudos got DQed for excessive violence, which won’t be a problem next week.

Ovaciones also includes it’s lucha year in review.

AAA (SUN) 01/04 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]
1) Baby Fox & Rey Imagen b Jorobados del Mal I & Jorobados del Mal II
2) Ejecutor & Mr. Secuestro b Aguila Extrema & Relampago Azul
3) Tigre Cota b Chris Stone [bull terrier]
4) Kenzo Suzuki, Monje Negro Jr., Tiffany b Dama de Hierro, Mascarita Divina, TDN
5) Rio Bravo & Tito Santana II b La Momia & Virtual X [AAA NORTH TAG]

Poder del Norte retains. We don’t have a title history for this one; should we? I think it’d help out, to clarify the many different names it’s listed under.

Mistico/SportsNavi
Mistico/SportsNavi

NJPW announced Mistico returns to their promotion on 02/15 for a singles match with Mephisto. It’ll be just the one match for now, but they’re building to something here. Judging from the pictures, Mistico was wearing the CMLL Welterweight Championship to the ring, while Averno had his NWA Middleweight Championship. He should’ve brought all three belts!

From Sinola, local wrestler Psicolpe talks about himself and Monster Truck I starting up with AAA. I guess they means a dark match? Psiclope talks about winning the mask of El Hechicero of Tijuana, who’s said to be the brother of Black Abyss.

ESPNDeportes has a blog entry about Hijo del Santo and marketing. In EXOnline, Santo mentions returning to Europe in the summer (perhaps for a russian roulette tournament) and trying to break a Guinness record at the celebration of his father’s passing. It’s sound as if they’re going to try and have the most people ever to draw the same thing (Santo) at the same time, or something along those lines.

Box Y Lucha #2904 has the Zero Hour CMLL Minis Cage match as it’s cover. Stories inside include a story about the Hijos de Pirata Morgan going to the US in March (what month is CHIKARA’s King of Trios? March? Perhaps?), the Traumas noticing everyone who Negro Navarro beats up is taking out on them, and Perro Aguayo Jr. saying they’re not interested in going to AAA. Mascarita Dorada also responds Freelance’s “I’m better” story last week by saying “prove it”, and that needs to happen ASAP.

CMLL (MON) 01/05 Arena Puebla [hugo 999 @ Box Y Lucha]
1) Black Tiger (Puebla), Centella de Oro, Tigre Rojo vs Karisma, Mr. Rafaga, Siki Ozama Jr.
2) Asturiano, Blue Center, Lestat vs Ares, Espiritu Maligno, Fuerza Chicana
3) Loco Max vs Euforia, Nosferatu, Virus, Skandalo, Valiente, Hijo del Fantasma, Pegasso, Mascara Dorada [ciber]
4) Sangre Azteca vs Mictlán [MEX WELTER]
5) La Sombra, Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Mephisto, Terrible, Texano Jr.

What we’ve got here is a clever way of putting the same amount of guys on the card but still doing the singles match. This is Arena Puebla’s first discounted show, which means 60 for ringside and down to 25 for the cheapest seats. ($4.42 -> $1.85). I do not possess the burning hatred of Mictlan present in others, but there’s another possible title change that’d be an injustice. Let’s all just hope Sangre is adding another X-ed out picture to his Wall Of Defeated Men this time tomorrow. Second match is a rematch from last week.

CMLL (FRI) 01/09 Arena Mexico
1) Molotov & Starman vs Inquisidor & Pólvora
2) Lluvia, Marcela, Princesa Blanca vs Amapola, Princesa Sujei, Rosa Negra
3) Stuka Jr. vs Euforia [lightning]
4) Mascara Dorada, Máscara Púrpura, Valiente vs Felino, Shigeo Okumura, Virus
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara vs Heavy Metal, Terrible, Texano Jr.
6) La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

Obvious statement time: main event could be good. Stuka and Euforia have fought once or twice. The ex-Trios champs continue to team up more after they stopped being champs.

This is the third straight week Okumura’s been in the 3rd from the top. That’s higher than usually and normally indicates there’s a feud I’m overlooking, but these are all different tecnicos than last week.

I didn’t post 2008 records for those with few matches, but Lluvia is currently undefeated in Mexico City. That looks to be over this week. At least Marcela is not (that?) hurt.

CMLL (SUN) 01/11 Arena Mexico
1) Pegasso & Rey Cometa vs Calígula & Méssala
2) Flash & Stuka Jr. vs Euforia & Nosferatu
3) Blue Panther, Mark Corleone, Shocker vs Ephesto, Terrible, Texano Jr.
4) La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Black Warrior, Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero
5) Mascarita Dorada vs Pequeño Olímpico, Shockercito, Pequeno Ninja, Tzuki, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pierrothito, Pequeño Warrior, Nino de Acero, Último Dragoncito, Fantasy, Electrico, Cosmico [mask, cage]

Not to be a downer, but are we sure this is a good idea? Minis main eventing a show with a big match is a fine idea (this might be the first one; I hope someone does the research on it – besides me), but I don’t know that an 11 person cage match is really the best way to do it. That’s a lot of people in a little space with nowhere to dive and ropes not working as usual. The best case scenario is the eliminations go fast and the time gets spent on a long one on one sequence to end it. I’ll put the poll up later in the week.

Will Flash & Stuka ever be in a tag match against a team besides Nosferatu & Euforia? Dunno, but this promotion is some kind of loaded when those two matches are you openers.

There’s no offical announcement, but these two cards feel like CMLL’s starting up again.

  1. Luchawiki.com is listing Rio Bravo & Tito Santana II as “Northern Mexico Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions (also listed as Northeast Tag Team Champions). Not sure if that helps, or if you even care. :)

  2. $5 say Toscano turns rudo again before the end of the month.

And just a question about Mistico….He wore THAT? It look like he combined Rey Misterio and A.J. Styles in that outfit.

  3. Those AAA belts I believe are the same as the Northeast belts. Those I can trace back to early ’04. They sometimes get combined with Nuevo Leon State Titles as well.

  4. @luchanews: Hey David, you should check out your recent updates to the CMLL Tag Titles. I think you mixed up some dates. It’s all explained in the talk page for the belts.:)

Toscano has no future in CMLL. He was stale as a rudo and nobody gives a crap about him as a tecnico. His best bet is to head to AAA or beg CMLL to hire a new booker who knows how to build former stars back up after years of destruction. He really doesn’t fit anywhere. I guess that means he’s headed to the Poder Mexica group.;)

Why don’t you possess a burning hatred for Mictlan? He’s awful and he wrestles in a tie but with no shirt. A TIE BUT WITH NO SHIRT. What a fruit.

Excellent looking lineup but obviously the main event stands out. I don’t even think we’ll get to see it b/c there is more football this weekend, right? CMLL.com put up videos of the main event from last Friday and it looked fun. Warrior murdered Sombra with the bullet tope. I have high hopes for this main event somehow making tape/DVD. Stuka Jr./Euforia should also be pretty sweet but no FSE…

UN – FUCKING – REAL! Entire card is just amazing. Look at those two opening matches. LOOK AT THAT SEMI-MAIN! LOOK AT TZUKI IN THE MAIN EVENT! It’s the best CMLL lineup of the year.:P

Your logic about the mini’s being confined in a cage match is 100% accurate but you have to remember this will be a show for kids. Lots of families will be in attendance which is why headlining with the cage makes sense. The usual crowd would just leave after Mistico (or whatever the semi-main is) but with kids in attendance you’ll have a hot crowd no matter how little action is taking place. I still think they’ll find the time to squeeze in spots, especially when it comes down to the final four or five.

Which mini will do the dive off the cage? I would guess Dorada.

Should I tell you why your Pequeno Universo pick is wrong now or wait for the poll?

I have two losers in mind and am deadlocked on which one it’ll be. I’m fairly certain it won’t be a rudo though.

  5. For the record I have no information that would lead me to believe either you or Cubs are incorrect. I’m just thinking of the following criteria:

    1. It’s a main event. Having a scrub like Cosmico or Pequeno Universo lose isn’t going to happen.

    2. Tecnicos are winning the semi-main.

    3. It’s a cage. Certain mini’s would seem to have issues scaling a cage, especially coming down to the floor.

  6. @Rob:

    Surely not Tzuki!?

Maybe Olimpico like you said a few days ago, or maybe even Shockercito. Both have been around at least 5 years, so those masks would be meaningful enough for a sunday show – it’s not like it’s a PPV or anything.

  7. Sadly my two favorites are them. If there was a live feed and I heard Pequeno Olimpico escaped, I’d probably start crying since Tzuki is the guaranteed loser. He’s already been unmasked in the WWF and elsewhere. Plus if his recent no-shows indicate anything it’s that his career is winding down and he probably wants to cash in before a serious injury.

He’s still only my second pick though. Olimpico is my #1 pick for various reasons.

    1. There is no Olimpico in CMLL. I’m sure they want to kill the gimmick off.

    2. When there was an Olimpico around, he was a rudo. It was always silly to have a tecnico version of a rudo gimmick.

    3. As you mention – experience. He’s been around ages and his mask would mean something seeing as though he was involved in the last big mask match involving mini’s @ Arena Mexico.

I can’t see anyone other than those two losing. Can you?

I’m ruling out Pequeno Ninja, Nino De Acero, Pequeno Universo, Mini Fantasy, Cosmico and Electrico right away. None of those masks mean anything. Even the kids know it.:)

I’m ruling out Dorada and Pierrothito since they are guys that I just can’t see working without masks.

I’m ruling out Pequeno Warrior b/c everyone would jump down CMLL’s throat for a ‘fraude’ since he lost his mask as Mini Psicosis less than 4 years ago.

    So that leaves:

    Pequeño Olímpico
    Shockercito
    Tzuki
    Ultimo Dragoncito

One of those four will be maskless.

    My order…

Most likely to lose: Pequeno Olimpico

Second most likely to lose: Tzuki

    Wouldn’t surprise me: Ultimo Dragoncito

Also wouldn’t surprise me but I question whether his mask means enough: Shockercito

I can’t even begin to imagine who gets the mask win though. Would they do tecnico on tecnico violence? Dorada could use a mask win since he won’t win the Reyes Del Aire on Tuesday and has been shut out of two title pictures. But unless they turn Pequeno Olimpico, do they give him the mask of a fellow tecnico or the most adorable wrestler on the roster? If Tzuki is losing I’m pretty sure Pierrothito is taking his hood. Pequeno Warrior is a longshot too.

Might have been more interesting if they tossed in Pequeno Damian/Halloween/Aguila/Bam Bam/Pequeno Violencia just to bring the total # to 16 and create more intrigue as to whether they’d cheap out with a hair loss or stick to unmasking someone.

  8. I agree it’s either going to be Olympico or Dragoncito. I”m leaning more towards Dragoncito as they’ve been kinda pushing him lately. I’m thinking it will come down to him and Dorada with Dorada winning it all.

  9. I think considering that the match had been announced for over a week before they added the extra 5 guys (which included Tzuki), it is likely that it will have been planned for one of the initial 8 to lose, so if there’s anything in that logic, he could be safe.

I have no idea really. I’d love it if it was someone i wasn’t so high on like Nino de Acero or Universo but like you say that’s probably unlikely.

And Tzuki’s also just about to hit his 10 year anniversary in the gimmick. Generally speaking, he’s been the mini’s ace over that time, and the kids absolutely adore him. Surely he isn’t going to lose all that in some shitty multi-mini cage mathch on a sunday show??? I’d say Tzuki losing his mask would be worthy of a segunda or tercera of a PPV.

I would prefer it not to be Pequeno Ninja as i quite like the gimmick and the look compared to some dull oriental surfer dude type – but if it was him, i would still be quite relieved that it wasn’t one of the long term guys who have earned the right to have a bit of a legacy.

I don’t know if i don’t believe they’ll have Tzuki lose, or if i just don’t want to believe and am trying to convince myself otherwise, but if that does happen it would be really sad. when the time does come for Tzuki, he deserves a 1 v 1 classic.

I really hate it when good luchadors drop their hoods in matches which don’t do their careers/abilities justice – hence why i hated the Panther and Fire matches.

  10. I should add that i would be just as gutted if it was Dragoncito as i would if it is Tzuki. Pretty much everything in my last post would still apply if you substituted Tzuki for Dragoncito :(

  11. hence why i hated the Panther and Fire matches
    ————–
And Pantera too, although i was just relieved at the time that it wasn’t Neutron.

Speaking of whom, is the information usually available for what aired on GDL TV on the mexican boards???

I have an interest in it this week – fingers crossed they haven’t switched to Tuesday tapings over the new year period as they’ve been known to do :)

  12. Go check Fredo’s latest update. He got a ton of Guadalajara (and Puebla from before it was available on the net). You may find a Neutron match or two or three.;)

  13. Hey the ByL forum is voting on the five candidates to be eligible for the ByL year end awards. I presume the 5 candidates for each category with the most votes will be in the official poll for ‘best of’ which comes out next week? That’s pretty huge since the ByL awards are generally the most respected.

  14. Yeah i saw it earlier – just the one, but i think that was his only Sunday appearance anyway, so at least it made it in.

I wonder whats up with him these days anyway. Whether he often works at small arenas where results never make it out, or if he’s pretty much just part time and has a day job. I hope it’s the latter.

  15. @Henrik: Well I heard a rumor the original guy playing La Mascara retired after the Reyes Del Aire 2005 and ever since then Neutron has been under the mask.

    ;)

  16. who is the new Volador Jr? He’s obviously less tall and better fitted than the past one…
