09/23: Santo, notes

Today would be Santo’s 91st birthday. EXOnline talks to Hijo del Santo about his father. Speaking about the current scene, Hijo del Santo says this is just a normal part of the cyclical popularity of CMLL (he places the last one at Octagon, Vampiro and Konnan in the early 90s) and we’re already on the down side of the boom due to oversaturation.

Santo says the possible future Santo III is 12, in school, likes wrestling but it’s too early to know if he’ll really want to pursue when he’s older and if he’ll be able to be better than his father and grandfather. The one thing he’s sure off is there will be no female Santo. Hijo del Santo says he has respect for women wrestlers, but there just can’t be a women Santo.

Hijo del Santo says he’d never be a commentator and isn’t a fan of wrestling rudos like Pierroth and the Capos because their styles don’t mesh with his. Santo also explains why you should treat your opponents with respect and praise: “if you lose, you lose, but if you win, it’s a big win.”

El Imparcial has more details of the AAA taping. Sounds like the Legion lost, but still beat up the Clowns after. Yay 200.

Mascarita Dorada, going for the title today/CMLL

ESTO has a preview of tonight’s Mexico show; there’s a couple of them, but they’re just lineup run downs. The big match is Mascarita Dorada vs Pierrothito for the Mexican Lightweight title. I’m still picking Pierrothito, but 2/3rds were picking Dorada in the chat on Friday not. In the semifinal, there’s a team of Black Warrior, Olimpico, and Rey Bucanero – three men who were upset about not making it on the anniversary show. Hopefully someone gets a quote or three.

Of course, the big story is Blue Panther’s first Mexico City mask unmasked. Ovaciones has a pre-Friday quote of Panther saying he was prepared for anything, prepared to keep on wrestling with his mask, and not planning to retire.

Sunday’s Coliseo show has discounted prices, like this Friday in Arena Mexico.

Wagnermania has Dr. Wagner Jr., Silver King and their sister Mayra talking about Dr. Wagner Sr. from Tercera Caida.

SoloLuchas catches up with LA Park in Spain.

Only Dark Angel made PWI’s Top 50 Female Wrestlers list. And that’s probably on her SHIMMER work. I’m appalled on behalf of at least Marcela, Amapola, Fabi, Mari, Lady Apache (though I still haven’t watched the title match), Cinthia Moreno, Ayako Hamada and probably a few more I’m forgetting.

KrisZ has a ton of lineups.

  1. I had no idea Malia Hosaka still wrestled.

You would think they’d at least include Fabi and Marcela (or whoever was CMLL women’s champ at the time of the list being made) since AAA and CMLL are far bigger than some of the indy women’s groups like Shimmer.

Rob’s going to be disappointed that Goddess didn’t crack the top 50.;)

  2. that is by far the worst list i’ve ever seen created. Candice Michelle at 10? she shouldnt even be on the list. Layla El on the list? Michelle McCool at 9? Maria Kanellis is the 29th best female wrestler? really? this list is a joke. this list is even more proof that PWI knows nothing of wrestling. at the very least this should have been called the US PWI 50 and not of all women’s wrestling. and even then the list is crap. how is LuFisto ranked 45, when women who arent even real wrestlers are ranked higher? it doesnt make any sense. they left out Mexico and Japan. where’s Nanae Takahashi? Carlos Amano? Yuki Miyazaki? where’s Amapola, Apache sisters, Cinthia Moreno, Sexy Star, La Diabolica, etc. i have now completely lost what little respect i still had for PWI. the PWI 500 is total garbage, but at least i thought they’d try to make up for it with this. i should have known better.

  3. There’s a wrestler/promoter in Iowa who is claiming on Myspace that not only is he going to Mexico soon but that next month he will be running joint shows with AAA on the 18th in Des Moines and 19th in Clear Lake. Here is the guy’s myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mwablade

  4. The PWI guys said that they intentionally excluded women who are wrestling in Mexico and Japan because the wrestling style in these two countries is “too different”. Since this doesn’t stop them to include Mexican and Japanese males into their PWI500, “the style is too different” surely means “we don’t know a shit about female wrestlers in Mexico and Japan”.
