There’s some people missing from the original lineup (Tzuki!) so perhaps things got shuffled around. There’s definitely another match next week, with the winners meeting on the 23rd. In the prematch photos, Cosmico is standing with the rudos. Could’ve just been to keep it six and six.

Lots of coverage on the WWE moving RAW to Galavision. They’ll be on Channel 9 in Mexico City, which is the channel which broadcasts CMLL and AAA, and they’ll be on at Sunday at 3pm, which is when AAA usually starts. The show will start on October 5th, which means the rest of this month will be normal before a new schedule kicks in. It doesn’t appear anyone mentioned what that new schedule will be, and Televisa said they haven’t decided who will announce the show. (Will they get to choose?) I’ve read elsewhere that it’ll be 1 hour, but it doesn’t seem to be in the press release. It does sound like Shane McMahon told the press that they’ll have a RAW in Mexico at some point, and the carrot on a stick of a PPV was brought out as usual.

For WWE, this is moving RAW from a network said to have under a million viewers (52MX) to one with 21 million viewers, though the difference wasn’t nearly as before Televisa’s associated cable/satellite systems dropped 52MX. For Televisa, they got a, uh, World Heavyweight Title with “Televisa” on the name plate. (Also, theortically higher ratings.)

Batista is quoted as saying the fans of Mexico will like WWE, because the US style has better athletes and they have the best Mexican wrestler. I guess Batista is going to be a rudo in Mexico?

Rey Misterio was asked if he thinks the guys in Mexico (specifically Mistico) who do his moves are ripping him off. He disagreed, saying it’s a homage and a sign of respect.

Mr. Reyes @ el Martiente

Rey Bucanero says he was just as surprised to find out he was defending his title vs X-Pac on the anniversary show as everyone else was. Bucanero says he and X-Pac wrestled in Japan – when? Is this something I should know am blanking out, or old Lightning Kid matches? Anyway, Rey’s looking forward to the opportunity to prove himself at an international level.

Okumura says he was taking pain pills to deal with his shoulder injury, but he felt something strange in his shoulder and got it looked it again. The screws in his shoulder moved (ow!), which is why they had to redo the surgery. In this interview, CMLL doctor says it’ll be 2 to 3 weeks before they can check to see how it’s healing this time and decide the next step. Okumura plans on getting revenge on Fabian for all of this.

Rayo de Jalisco says he’s going to Japan from 09/11 to 10/05, including defending his championship on 09/22. Who’s he wrestling for?

Wagnermania posted video of this week’s Stellar Moments and Ras de Lona’s match results of the week.

MT looks back at the last 17 years of Anniversary shows. Things I didn’t know
– the final fall of Atlantis/Emilio NWA LH title match in ’90 went 5 seconds
– the ’97 anniversary featured Lola Gonzalez’s retirement

They have slightly different dates than what we have in the wiki for a couple anniversary – it’s not the wrong date, it’s MT saying the week before or the week after (or two weeks) were the anniversary show. I think I was often just guessing based on what looked like the anniversary show for the modern results, so they may be more accurate.

Blue Demon Jr. hypes the second NWA Mexico show on YouTube. Of course.

Latin Lover’s wife is interviewed on Univision. Mostly so she can do a lot of “no, he’s still with me” responses.

Mr. Reyes posted photos of the DTU show. Taking bumps onto cactus is at least amsuing in it’s sillyness.

Box Y Lucha #2887 has Scorpio’s recovery on the cover. If they’re taking requests about articles to put on the website, I sure would like the Atomic Boy one.

The Gladiatores are broadcasting Thursday and Sunday’s IWRG shows on their website.

90 thoughts to “09/10: Naucalpan, Puebla, Mexico, WWE”

  1. WHAT THE FUCK.

Cosmico played a rudo on Tuesday and Ultimo Dragoncito replaced Tzuki.

    Why does Tzuki constantly no-show?

    (insert generic drug joke)

But seriously, why is he always on one show, off two, back on one, off three, etc.?

Which leaves us 3 minis short for next week assuming Tzuki isn’t re-booked and might screw CMLL who don’t even have enough guys to cover the 24 by our count.

Match looks awesome by the way. Cosmico being a base for Shockercito? SIGN ME UP!

The Lola retirement (she returned…) match was horrible (Diabolica was awesome though!) but the ceremony was great.

Atlantis/Emilio actually had their second fall go 5 seconds unless I’m remembering things wrong. Backdrop, Atlantida – OVA! The announcers always refer to that match when short falls take place.

  2. the just posted Observer:

In what could be a major change in the landscape of pro wrestling, Shane McMahon held a press conference on 9/9 and announced a Raw replay would air from 3-5 p.m. on Saturdays on Televisa Ch. 9 in Mexico.

The unspoken part of the story is that is the regular time slot that the CMLL Friday night matches from Arena Mexico have been airing in.

There’s like 6 links up there that say Sunday. (Well, more say Domingo, but you know.) Did I miss something? Though I’d wager on CMLL being bumped before AAA, for sure.

  3. “Match looks awesome by the way”
    ————

Not that it’ll matter. You know what C3 are like with Cibernetico’s – it will be butchered to shit. A couple of opening generic exchanges, then clipped to the last 4. :(

Maybe they’ll throw Pequeno Ninja on the rudos side – it’s not like anyone gives a shit about him, and it’s the kind of gimmick that could be either tecnico or rudo. And it looks to me like Cosmico was actually Celestial rather than Electrico.

Good to see Pierrotito win though. I wouldn’t mind seeing a 1v1 against Dorada or maybe even Tzuki. Bam Bam less so.

  4. AAA will probably move to Saturday’s and CMLL will be off Televisa and move to Cadena Tres full time. Of course I’m not the voice of Mexican television so what do I know?

Is Pequeno Universo 2000 new? Why would they have a new mini for a guy that doesn’t even wrestle there? I guess it’s the Pequeno Violencia logic.

  5. Supposedly the CMLL hi5 page (?) has a new lienup for the 19th minus X-Pac and w/ a new crappier looking singles match.

  7. Hmmmm. The way I read it, WWE said they would be on Televisa 9(Galavision) on Sunday’s with one-hour, so it’s probably just “AM RAW”.

Galavision is in about 20,000,001 homes over-the-air and cable(includes Chui). About 8,000,000 homes are the Mexico City market alone.

I’d be shocked if Televisa dumps CMLL. I’d expect AAA to go to two hours. Televisa won’t dump CMLL, but would rather torture people with 20 minutes of advertising per hour on their broadcasts.

  8. While CMLL can’t decide on their card (odd that they’d push the ‘old’ card up to the top of their .com news page while publishing a new one elsewhere), it’s Wednesday, AAA had their taping on Sunday and has a major show this week and hasn’t said anything.

Neither tactic seems really smart to me.

  9. Superluchas has youtube of the WWE press conference. Is Batista as over as Mistico, Perro, or Ciber in Mexico? Yes.

Televisa is being vague about things. Their video just says “Domingos” as being when WWE airs. Wanna bet they will fuck around with the timeslot? They can’t help themselves. That’s how they are.

  10. Park is great, but that match and those changes are not good. I’m actually disappointed because for some reason i was really interested in and looking forward to seeing Rey/XPac.

Ah well, i guess if Park’s back for another couple of months stint, it’s a good thing – so long as it’s not all going to be focussed on his feud with Wagner which is going nowhere. ever.

Really bad lineup, particularly the opener – which won’t bother me one bit if it’s just a normal weeks 1.45hrs taping…. but will piss me off if it’s another PPV and that’s what we get instead of novatos or minis.

  11. Dumb question, KrisZ said in his Lucha Report that Black Terry won that triple threat match for IWRG to win the Welterweight Title. It was also a Title vs. Mask vs. Hair match. So who is right?

  12. “Superluchas has youtube of the WWE press conference. Is Batista as over as Mistico, Perro, or Ciber in Mexico? Yes.”

Because a room full of WWE fans cheered for him?

    Don’t become a lawyer.

  13. AAA always finds a way. Vamp won’t be around soon enough so that headache will be gone and if TNA brings back Moody that’ll be another headache gone and hopefully the end of these stupid U.S. indy dudes doing random shots.

It’s kinda funny since AAA is probably the most simple promotion in the world to book. So simple in fact that the people currently in charge are determined to change things and force-feed fans what they don’t want just b/c they’re tired of sticking with the status quo!

  14. Why didn’t they show a picture of Latin Lover’s wife? I’ve always wondered what the woman married to Latin Lover looks like.

  15. @Tim: No. That was Robert. I’ll never forget. “RIP PENA. RIP AAA” were his exact words on DVDVR two years ago.

  16. @Rob: I think it’s becoming more apparent that WWE is going to give AAA and CMLL a run for their money. Once WWE lowers their guarantee for smaller cities, and gets ratings from smaller markets like Torreon, SLP, Aguascalientes, and Leon, they’ll be able to run about 25 shows a year down there. They are going to make the two groups look disorganized and boring by comparison to the WWE storylines and characters.

The pop for Batista was strong. I wonder how many WWE characters are more over than Ciber, Mistico, Perro, and La Parka right now?

  17. I think that the WWE product and Mexican wrestling are two completely different things so the Mexican fans won’t be choosing one over the other. At least not with CMLL. But with AAA (Konnan) trying to American themselves, they will look like a cheap immitation of WWE and thus they will go under.

Eric Bischoff kicked Vinces butt by making WCW different than the WWF. When Vince Russo tried to immitate the WWF, he brought down WCW. CMLL can’t give in to the pressure. They have to keep being what they are and not fall into the trap of trying to keep up with WWE.

  18. You’re acting like the WWE will give a shit about Mexico. They went into Japan back in 2001 (or 2002) and drew good crowds. Still do as far as I know and yet they’ve shown no intention of expanding over there at all. Vince could give a fuck about anything that isn’t the States. There’s a big difference between running 6 or 7 shows a year which are like exhibition shows where guys just have to do their thing and running actual shows with stories, angles and all that jazz. I don’t think the WWE cares enough to put the effort into something like that.

“The pop for Batista was strong. I wonder how many WWE characters are more over than Ciber, Mistico, Perro, and La Parka right now?”

You act like there are only “wrestling fans” in Mexico and not individual fans of AAA, CMLL and WWE. That was a WWE press conference where WWE fans attended. Why don’t you bring up Batista’s name at Arena Mexico this week and see how many people even blink? More people would recognize his name at an AAA show but Ciber and Parka’s names would get triple the reaction.

WWE draws well in Mexico b/c they spread the tours out nicely. If they ever tried to oversaturate the market and have 2 or 3 shows a month or even every 2 months, attendance would dip and Vince would pull the plug in a heartbeat.

    Anyways…

Yeah I said AAA would die when Pena left b/c AAA *was* Pena. The effects of him not being around are just starting to be felt since there is nobody in the promotion with the power to stop the garbage going on backstage.

I’m of the opinion that when AAA gets rid of the troublemakers (starting with the Guardian Angel himself) they’ll be just fine.

Planning on going to next year’s Anniversary Show?

  19. I was just setting Tim straight.

Vince does not see himself or WWE as a US company. He sees it as an international entertainment company.

Actually, AAA spreads their tours of Mexico City out more than WWE. AAA has done one big show in Mexico City, and we know how that did. Not good. Another tv taping at an armory looked like a poorly attended ROH show. I shook my head, and still don’t understand why AAA just can’t draw in Mexico City/DF. It’s fair to say WWE has more of a presence in Mexico City than AAA.

WWE does not run any market in the world more than two or three times a year. The top venues like MSG, Nassau Coliseum, Allstate Arena, get two or three shows at most. Mexico will be no different. They run Tampa once and Miami twice in 2008 for example.

Yet, I watch AAA, and understand why they get people over. They cleverly put Evans and Hart in a bunch of tag matches on tv, instead of random six-mans, and they seem to have clicked. They know how to make the women interesting by placing them in so many mixed matches or singles.

I don’t want AAA to go under. I also don’t think Vamp is a trouble maker. But if a feared leader does not emerge, the wrestlers will run the company into the ground.

  20. @Daniel: Here in the US, I know so many Mexicans who have chosen WWE over AAA and CMLL. These are people who speak no English, consider themselves Mexican nationals, and have little interest in AAA, which has six hours of tv time in the US.

TV ratings back up the statement that WWE is the preferred wrestling of choice for Latinos, regardless of language preference.

  21. @Rob: No more anniversary shows, no more Mexico period for me. I hate that country. From the minute you land, people are bothering you for a “taxi”, “chicas”, asking for money, selling jewelry, or plotting to mug or kidnap you. It’s too dangerous. Fuck it.

  22. Why should Mexican nationals living in America matter to AAA? They aren’t going to shows and It’s not like AAA lives off Galavision America.

Until WWE actually does a TV taping in Mexico, I don’t think either CMLL or AAA should be worried. And even then, It’s only going to be once or twice a year at the most. People will still go to AAA shows because that name and the wrestlers sell in Mexico.

I know Rob said that about AAA but you did also Keith. You said if the violence didn’t stop, It would die this year. So far, I don’t see that happening.

  23. @luchalibrelive!: My point is that people in Mexico won’t stop watching CMLL or AAA just because WWE in on Galavision. They can watch more than one show. And since WWE won’t be touring in Mexico all year long they won’t stop attending shows just because WWE is on Galavision.

Don’t forget that WWE has been on TV in Mexico for a long time now, so Mexicans are aware of the WWE product. They fact that they’ll be seen in more homes does not mean the end of Mexican wrestling. The only way CMLL or AAA will die is if they kill themselves, and AAA is headed in that direction. I agree with Rob that AAA needs to get rid of certain people in order to recover but I would get rid of Konnan first because he’s the one injecting the poison.

  24. CUBS!

Listening to Sims @ work now and he says Meltzer typo’d. WWE is getting the AAA slot as reported everywhere else.

I gotta write to Sims about this AAA deal back when I get home.

  25. @Tim: US fans matter to AAA because they have toured here, and plan on touring again. Whether it “matters” or not, it shows that when Mexican are given the choice between WWE and AAA or CMLL, they seem to prefer WWE. That says something.

I’m right about the excessive violence in AAA. It appears to have taken a toll on the gates, and increased drug useage, as I predicted.

  26. Nobody except me wants to point out the irony of VAMPIRO complaining about DRUG USAGE in WRESTLING?

    Once again…

    VAMPIRO… complaing about… DRUG USAGE… in… WRESTLING.

Anyone? I don’t think you can be slapped with a libel lawsuit for a post in a blog. Threatened with one, yes.

  27. @Rob: On the documentery “101 reasons to not become a wrestler” Vampiro did admit to using drugs. He said he writes his best music when he’s high.” Unless he’s cleaned up his act since then he shouldn’t complain.

  28. Where’s this proof that AAA has taken a hit in the gates because of Violence? If anything, I would think it would be all the guys leaving.

And AAA has only toured America a handful of times in recent years, Is that where most of the money is coming from for AAA? I don’t think so. They need to worry about pleasing the mexicans in mexico, not here.

  29. @keith:
“”No more anniversary shows, no more Mexico period for me. I hate that country. From the minute you land, people are bothering you for a “taxi”, “chicas”, asking for money, selling jewelry, or plotting to mug or kidnap you. It’s too dangerous. Fuck it.””

Mexico city has been like that for decades, so that’s a pretty lame excuse for CMLL being unable to “deliver the big masks match”. Have they done Atlantis vs Wagner and I doubt you’ve been complaining about the country (and the US is just as bad, my dad was over here during the week and he says crime is out of control in Dallas, he’s considering moving over here even if Nvo Laredo is supposed to be shit). CMLL dropped the ball, they put up a shit show, and that’s it. And of course, they’re thousands, or even millions of tourist in Mexico who go back to their country without any harm, I don’t really understand why you suddenly say “Fuck Mexico”.

  30. Even if it was Perro vs. Mistico, I still wouldn’t change my attitude about:

    – Kidnappings
    – Muggings
    – Muggings by cops
    – Drinking the water
    – Dealing with US Customs upon return
    – Homeless street kids bothering for money

Blah. You can keep Mexico. If I want to learn more Spanish, I’ll rent an apartment in Sunset Park Brooklyn.

  31. But the thing is, 4 months ago, 4 years ago, 20 years ago, those things were taking place (and were even worse save maybe the customs), so why all of the sudden you changed your mind?

It still sounds like a sorry excuse to me. Or maybe you never were any serious about doing that trip to the anniversary in the first place, so you might be right, the shitty lineup for the anniversary show doesn’t matter at all.

  32. First, I’m not complaining about the Panther/Villano mask match, since it is delivering two big legends in a stip. Match is four or five years late but it’s still a big stip match. And I’m sure we can’t wait to see it.

I thought it over, and realize I have to be nuts to go down there.

  33. Villano V a legend? Isn’t that stretching it a little bit? And No one can possibly think that Panther is dropping his hood. Just admit it Keith, Someone has a ransom on your head don’t they? It’s Konnan isn’t it? Tired of your bashing of AAA.

  34. I’m not bashing AAA. They just need a few improvements. I was clear about saying they will draw well in the US, and they did.

  35. @luchalibrelive!: Those kind of things are planned for months, gringos are not targeted for those, in fact, most guys are scared of the americans because the government does put pressure on the mexican government, so I can assure you that gringos do way more crimes over here than what they’re victims.

The drinking water sounds like a better excuse…
