AAA #844 (08/02)

taped 07/05, aired in the US on 08/02

As this show wrapped up, I started to run down the usual steps left before it the recap turns into this post, and I got stuck at the “rip a match so it’s not just a blurb of text” part. Nothing was really worth grabbing on this show. It’s a filler show, and filler shows are going to happen when they do 50 episodes of new stuff (and a couple recap episodes) a year, but it was a filler episode without any good matches either. This was easily one of the most skippable tapings of the year.

I’ve got the minis match and the women’s match below, partly because they get less weeks, and partly because they got less time – they were able to fit together in under 15 minutes. That extra time didn’t really do any favors to the normal matches.

Top Five (women) Wrestlers in Mexico, right now:

1) Fabi
2) Amapola
3) Marcela
4) Mari
5) Ayako

The CMLL women are slipping, because I’m not seeing them as much with no 52mx. I don’t think I’ve seen Lady Apache since she’s been back, and haven’t seen much Dark Angel lately. Still, even if everything else was equal, that’s a pretty solid top 5. Fabi is pretty easily the best , but I’d look forward to any matchup in that group.

And that’s surely enough to fill this space. Maybe we should do this ranking with the minis after the tournament gets going.

some assorted AAA content

AAA Recap videos – these are all 2 minutes or less, but you can catch up on the storylines pretty easily. I wish they were embeddable but understand why they wouldn’t be.

from Irapuato
* Legion wins the main event
* Ayako Hamada joining the Legion – it didn’t click until now that Ayako running in to attack the Apaches in Irapuato was meant to mean she was joining the Legion. It didn’t occur to me, because I’m pretty sure she was already part of the Legion and they forgot. Oh well.
* Chessman’s bad day.
* Konnan’s bad day. Interesting that they took out all his offense

(doesn’t say much for the two tapings in between that they jump to…)

from Solidaridad
* Sagrada & Abismo advancing in the minis tournament
* Psycho Circus @ 164.
* Hart Foundation (and Electro) defeat MPs (and Chessman)
* Chessman wins the battle royal

Other
* Vipers video package. It’s Histeria, Psicosis and Black Abyss, so they knew Antifaz was out of the picture whenever they did it.
* Psycho Circus video package. They used this when they came back after Rey de Reyes, and may have reused it again.
* Vampiro vs Mesias. Much better in video package form. I presume this aired on the Monterrey show to hype the rematch in Queretaro.
* New look Gronda teaser video package
* Pirates vs Elegido (and Alan and Parka) teaser. You know, that match would cost tremendously less than the usual Parka/Mexico vs random strong man/Legion trios match and I’d be just as tremendously more interested in it for Verano de Escandalo. And since they actually did a video package teasing it, it might actually occur.

Looks like Ricky Marvin is in on Thursday. Perhaps he’s the new Guapo!

I’ve seen the Best of TripleMania PPV listed on my cable system during the second half of the month. Comcast has it as $10, which is not crazy unreasonable though you can still do better on DVDs. The crazy unreasonable part is it’s a 1 hour show, for five matches. This is a waste of everyone’s time.

Last Saturday’s recap should be up later.

Update: AAA’s website says Antifaz is the mystery Viper for Friday’s taping. New Guapo is still a mystery.

08/05: Dos Jr. says he’s NOT going to WWE, Villano V/Panther date TBA on Thursday?

(superluchas ) Dos Caras called in to Tercera Caida last night and said he has NOT signed with the WWE – they didn’t meet his terms. Wagnermania posted video of this.

Buried in talk about tonight’s card, a Villano V & Blue Panther mask/match contract signing is announced for Thursday. That would seem to mean it’s happening well before the Anniversary show.

indy (SAT) 08/02 Auditorio de Tijuana [SuperLucha, KrisZ]
1) Zarco b Dragon Chino
2) Arlequin & Sangre Guerrera b Sparks & Super Galgo
3) Halcon Tapatio & Mr. Maldito b Astro Boy & Silver Star
4) Mortiz & Scorpio Jr. b Celestial & Rayman
5) Averno b Místico [copa Auditorio de Tijuana 2008]

Rayman was Místico’s cornerman, but ended up turning on him. There’s video at the SuperLuchas link.

KrisZ’s post also has La Parka Jr. defending AAA and attacking guys like Pegasso for leaving. Parka thinks if they want to main event, they need to work harder for a longer time, but I’ve always thought the problem was they’re not getting a chance to work for a long time; while everyone wants to be used bigger and better, the guys who’ve left have seemed to complain about not being using enough. If more guys were getting 3-4 shows a week, there’d be less of them leaving to book their own schedule.

Laredo Kid is two or three months from returning.

Ohtani’s Jacket writes about Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mr. Nibela (11 years ago), and Dr. Wagner Jr./Mano Negra vs Super Astro/Ultraman Jr. from last year.

More later.

08/03 Coliseo Results

cmll

CMLL (SUN) 08/03 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Astro Boy & Starman b Semental & Zayco
2) India Sioux, Princesa Blanca, Sahori b La Seductora, Medussa, Rosa Negra
3) Axxel, Felino, Máscara Púrpura b Euforia, Nosferatu, Virus
4) Grey Shadow, La Máscara, Volador Jr. DQ Black Warrior, Olímpico, Rey Bucanero
5) Atlantis, Lizmark Jr., Último Guerrero b Héctor Garza, Marco Corelone, Volador Jr.

Warrior yanked Volador’s mask, but I guess he got it back between matches. Axxel replaced Alex in the tercera. The recap seems to indicate India Sioux is back only as a part timer.

08/04: Dos Caras Jr. no shows Arena Coliseo; on his way to SmackDown?

CMLL (SUN) 08/03 Arena Coliseo
5) Atlantis, Lizmark Jr., Último Guerrero b Héctor Garza, Marco Corelone, Volador Jr.

CMLL.com hasn’t posted results from last night (all their results pages either have the text from the Gran Prix show, or a picture of the trios champs, which doesn’t scream a much imporved website.) Ovaciones says Volador worked twice, which is rare and would seem to indicate they didn’t know he’d be there for the main event until just about the main event. He feuded with Warrior in the semimian, then took Dos’ spot in the main event. Dos is scheduled to work Monday in Puebla, Tuesday in Mexico, Friday in Arena Lopez Mateos and Sunday in Coliseo, so CMLL was still booking him out like they expected him to be around. (He’s also on the Spain tour.)

Meanwhile, Super Luchas says not only have Dos & Sicodelico signed, they’re assigned to the SmackDown brand, which happens to be touring Mexico in October. Both are expected to go to Florida Championship Wrestling to get used to US style before debuting.

Accion’s CMLL highlights were off the Relevos Increidble match, of course. It looked to me like Perro got hurt when he and Garza caught a Mistico dive, because he was checking his arm after, but he didn’t show the injury during the rest of the clips. AAA showed the Hell Brothers vs FdT tag match, with Cibernetico coming off bad again – he stood on the apron watching while Halloween and Tiger beat Chessman for a long team, and then was shown coming in only after Chessman was dead. Not that Chessman is blameless – he argues with Pepe Casas after a pin only gets 2, causing Pepe to miss a foul on Cibernetico and doesn’t care enough to break it up.

Not much else going on this morning. Shareonall seems to have gone bust – is there another similar site I should be using?

08/03: IWRG, GDL, Perro’s injury

JRC (SUN) 07/27 Arena Aragon [SuperLuchas #275]
1) Vengador b Mostros
2) Angel Ambeintal b Canelo Juaresz
3) Mr. Zad & Verdugo b Angel Ambiental & Estrella de Plata
4) Epidemia & Heavy Boy b Canelo Juarez & Mr. Boy
5) Mini Cuchillo b Panterita [mask]

This one’s complicated. Panterita is not the IWRG one, but a one local to this arena. He said his name is Manual de Jesus Arenas Santos and had been wrestling for 27 years. After the match, the original Cuchillo hit the ring and claimed Mini Cuchillo had been using that name for years without permission. I have no idea if that’s meant to be an angle. Mr. Boy is said to be Bam Bam’s brother.

IWRG (THU) 07/31 Arena Naucalpan [SuperLuchas #275]
1) Eragon b Dinamita Kid
2) Miss Gaviota & Star Boy b Anubis & Judas el Traidor
3) Enigmatica & Linda Star b Flor Metalica & Lady Warrior
4) Aeroman, Fenix, Freelance b Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Fantasma de la Ópera
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., Multifacético, Pantera b Monsther, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido

Wagner fouled Scorpio for the win. Despite not winning the match or even beating him directly in a fall, Dr. Cerebro wants a shot at Freelance’s Lightweight title. Can’t hurt to ask, I guess.

CMLL (SUN) 08/03 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [mt]
4) Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca, Satánico b La Sombra, Máximo, Valiente
5) Negro Casas b Blue Panther

Negro jumped Panther before the whistle, beat him to win the first fall, beat him up as the second fall started, but Panther made a comeback and got the armbar to tie it up. Third fall was back and forth, and Negro used the ropes on a pin to take it.

Sangre beat Sombra and got himself a NWA World Welterweight Title match next week. Unification? (No.)

SuperLuchas talked with Perro’s doctor, who said they had to reconstruction a broken bicep tendon. The doctor says here that 3 months is the minimum and it all depends on how the tendon heals. Notimex is sticking to the three months return date (putting Perro back in November), but CMLL’s website is now saying Perro will be out (no less than) four months.

Speaking of CMLL, there’s not much to say about their new website – it’s the exact same website it’s always been, just with a little more flash on the front page and a different style sheet. You can paint the house whatever color you want, it’s still the same house with the same rooms and piping.

Notimex has Panther and V5 agreeing to mask match, though no one’s signed anything yet.

This Tuesday is a Fan Appreciation Day, with any ticket for 30 pesos. This seemed to work well last time, and CMLL.com says they’ll be doing it for the first Tuesday of every month. (That’d be 09/02, 10/07, 11/03, and 12/02 this year.)

The DF Box Y Lucha commission being in the news for any reason gives Arturo Rivera the opening to rip it for being pro-CMLL, and he’s not passing that sort of chance up. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this, but Arturo Rivera is not a fan of CMLL and the people who run it. You know, I don’t know where this oh so exciting blogging life will take me, but if I one day end up with a column in a major newspaper that I can use to primarily to air grudges and attack opponents, it’d be pretty awesome.

On Saturday, Rey and UG beat the teams of Sonjay Dutt & Petey Williams and Kaz & Jay Lethal in a triangle tag match. SuperLuchas says they did the same match the previous night.

Lineups:

IWRG (THU) 08/07 Arena Naucalpan
1) Fenix, Miss Gaviota, Zatura vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
2) Aeroman, Centauro, Freelance vs Cerebro Negro, Ciclon Negro, Dr. Cerebro
3) Fuerza Guerrera, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido vs Corazón de Barrio, Hator, Multifacético

This is the Hator/Corazon de Barrio appearances previous mentioned. They’re working a Martha Villalobos show while in Mexico State.

CMLL (SUN) 08/10 Arena Coliseo

2) Lady Apache, Luna Mágica, Marcela vs Amapola, La Nazi, Medussa

4) La Máscara, Sagrado, Valiente vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Texano
5) Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone, Shocker vs Black Warrior, Lizmark Jr., Rey Bucanero

Minis working third is a good sign. A much better sign than my TiVo, which seems to have ate the FSE episode with the title match on it.

IWRG (SUN) 08/10 Arena Naucalpan
1) Eragon & Yack vs ? & Anubis
2) Gemelo Fantastico I & Gemelo Fantastico II vs Judas el Traidor & Rockero del Diablo
3) Aeroman, Fenix, Freelance vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
4) Lady Rabbit & Linda Star vs La Chola & Rossy Moreno
5) Centuaro, Super Astro, Ultramán Jr. vs Dr. Cerebro, Fuerza Guerrera, Monsther
6) Dr. Wagner Jr. & Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Máscara Año 2000 & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

Must be thrilling for the Oficials, Freelance and the others to work one match below a Lady Rabbit/Linda Star tag team.
