08/22 site notes

Just some random business on the top of my head. If you’re just here for the lucha news, you probably can skip this post.

* Last week’s FSE should be up tomorrow night.

* Anyone check out the CMLL Arena Mexico radio feed lately? There’s been zero talk next Friday’s show is on PPV, and I do not expect it to be, but I’d like to do live coverage if it was possible. Actually, what I’d really like to do is the first luchablog live chat, using the coveritlive technology, but it doesn’t make sense to do it if there’s no results until tomorrow.

Even it doesn’t work for no Friday, I plan on doing this for the Anniversary show. WordPress would probably hold up the strain of lots of live comments better than MovableType did at TripleMania (because WordPress has been million times better than MT was at the end), but CoverItLive puts zero actual strain on the server and would work perfect.

* If I’m going to criticize certain lists, even kiddingly, then it’s only fair I make my own list for ridicule purposes. So that’s in the plans, as well as the comparison I promised but never got around to.

* Not on mySpace, not on Facebook. But, now, I have a profile on HI5.com. I was amused enough for five seconds to set it up, and figure I’ll never again use it.

* There was a suggestion in email a while back that basically went “You have this lucha video, why don’t you torrent it?” And my answer, which I never got around to sending it was “uh, I dunno.” I do occasionally use torrents for other non-wrestling (completely legal) use, but not really for wrestling. I think I’ve had accounts at prowrestlingtorrents, but they’re surely long gone because I never used them. I’m sure I could beg for an invite (but that’s not what I’m doing here)

Back when ShareOnAll was up, they had download stats, and the stats for the clips I posted were never really that big. They’re not that big on DailyMotion either, but they’re a lot bigger there than the downloads. All I would really have to offer would be the AAA shows (which sound like they’re already being posted) and the FSE shows (which I’m not sure about, and which run just over 1GB after I edit out the breaks) and I don’t know if there’s interest in that. Is there?

The upside is all the files wouldn’t be gone next time a file sharing place goes down; someone would just have to reseed. (Of course, people could just do that now…)

* I watched a couple CHIKARA shows this week. Does anyone want to read what I thought about them? (It’s even less informed than usual.) They were good, you probably know that if you care about CHIKARA, and Fire Ant/Vin Gerard was really good. I can go on, but I don’t think I have much new or interesting – these were just the first time I watched any CHIKARA besides the podcast (which alone was enough to get me to the show in Streamwood) and now I’m really looking forward to the show.

The singular thing I want to know more than anything in the world: why is no announcer allowed to talk before a match starts or after it’s over? Just on the two shows, I’ve seen matches were announcers have sprinted away from the desk, as if it had suddenly turned radioactive at the finish. Maybe this is a normal US indy thing and I’m just newbie-ing out here, and it is nice to hear what wrestlers are saying on the way to the ring and the way back instead of announcers talking over them, but the immediate start/stop of it all is very strange. Is is something to make it easier to chop the matches up later on for comps? Can CHIKARA not afford the extra electricity it would take to power the microphones when matches are not going on? Does Louden Noxious actually have the only microphone so they have to wait until he comes back to the desk, then share in like a milkshake at a 50’s diner?

That’s way too much about that.

Other odd production bit: the video quality looks GREAT, and yet the DVD menu screen is more 8-bit than Player Uno. Technology is weird.

(Why did I write 6 words on the show and 600 on the production? don’t be me)

* there was something else I was going to write here, but I changed my mind and deleted it. So that’s it.

I’d like to work on some non-news, non-recap posts at some point, but I can’t promise when. Any thing else you all need to know?

  1. I never figured out how to watch the stats for shareonall, although on sharebee, some videos reached 100… the poll for the LdP and GP also got like a 40 count, 3 times the tapatia awards count, so I guess the audience is building up…

  2. Sometimes, the announcers haven’t even come to the desk by the time the match starts. I also like that they don’t talk over the theme music. Of course, that has been slightly ruined by Louden now doing this long intro while a person is walking to the ring, like he is Arturo Rivera or something.

A funny thing when at the shows is that depending on where you are sitting, you can hear the commentary being done while you are watching the matches. And Louden is loud enough that you can hear him from across the room. At least you could in Hellertown (RIP). Also true with Mantis and Sweeney to a lesser extent.

And fire Ant/Vin Gerard is arguably CHIKARA’s Match of the Year so far. Probably that or the IWS/F1RST match from King of Trios.

  3. I remember Rob asking about a week back your feelings about AAA as opposed to when this was a CMLL only blog. Are you a fan of AAA now? CMLL?

  5. I think it was a CMLL only blog in name. Cubs covered both groups for as long as I remember.

Clearly, Cubs has mixed feelings about both groups, and always points out their pros and cons.

I’d like to know who is favorite luchadors are. What masks are his favorite.

  6. Oh man you gotta go back to the begining of the blog Keith. Cubs refused to cover AAA and seemed agitated when it got brought up in comments.:P

  7. Oh. I only have two years experience here. Ironically, Cubs coverage of AAA somewhat coincides with CMLL losing Galavision USA, and AAA becoming the only Lucha available to US viewers. Sure, FSE, but that’s prelim junk. The power of television is amazing.

  8. In Cubs defense, he wasn’t the only person online who disliked AAA. It rarely got discussed anywhere.

  9. I think the only place you got much AAA talk around that time was your board Alfredo. I remember Rob use to pimp how great Chessman and The Black Family vs. Barrio Boys matches were but most people would just blow it off as there was a big stigma to AAA at the time. Times have definitely changed.

  10. What kind of list is being planned? A best wrestlers list?

Alexis keeps inviting me to be a Hi5 friend and I had no idea what that meant. I, too, am without myspace and facebook so glad to see there is someone else in this world who isn’t a slave to the corporations!

I’m actually watching Chikara right now… the show you watched I guess since Fire Ant/Vin Gerard is up later. I wonder if the announcers leaving right when the match ends is due to plans for future DVD releases to the entire nation ala the new PWG Sells Out triple DVD set. The Chikara guys use music that they would never be allowed to use without paying fees to the original authors so if the announcers end things right when the pinfall occurs it makes for easy video editing for a national release rather than having to re-do commentary or cut the announcers off in mid-thought.

  11. @xuisaw: That was pretty short-lived. That was like a WCW-type feud were they’d start it on Nitro and forget about it by the time Thunder would air.:)

  12. The tag match was fun and I love the beatdown to Chessman in the lockerroom. Judas is so badass.

  13. @odessa steps magazine: Let’s at least give Louden a little bit of credit here. He’s improved leaps and bounds in the last few months, primarily because of direct criticism from the long-standing fans (yes, this even includes a drunken Baby Gorilla). He doesn’t talk over the entrances for five minutes, and the last time I remember him doing the post-match “LET’S HEAR IT!” bit for more than one simple sentence was the Skayde vs Pantera match – of course, one might assume that it took that match in particular for Quack to get annoyed by it.

Don’t get me wrong, the guy still has his faults, but he’s gotten much better within the last two months or so. He’s no Carolina Jim, but who is?

  14. here’s what happened to shareonall:
    http://www.p2p-blog.com/item-796.html

i’ve been a regular visitor here for a long time and cubs really didn’t like aaa or even discuss it much way back when. glad to see now that it gets equal coverage. is aaa as good as it used to be? is any wrestling organization these days?

i would be that guy who sent that email about the lucha torrents. as stated here already, if you have basic cable with galavision, all you get is aaa. the digital pack here in my area would only yield me fse and the extended basic pack would get me wwc on wapa. that isn’t much. so really, all i watch for wrestling (excluding dvd’s and live shows) is aaa since i can’t stomach tna and wwe. roh isn’t on here either that i know of but i don’t even like their product!

as far as lucha torrents goes, clearly there are plenty of people who don’t have access to all the stuff that’s reported here or elsewhere. I’d love to watch anything from cmll, iwrg, or japan. it was great when cmll was on gala and they have 6 extra hours that are filled with aaa repeats. it sucks.

torrents would provide us fans with the best access to the shows cuz i know some readers here have to be able to watch them somehow. there has to be people out there who record to hard drive, dvd, or via tv tuner on their computer who can make these shows available either with or w/o commercials.

it’d be a great contribution to the community. i’d much rather watch the shows in full in their original quality. and if streamed, still in full in good quality and not cut into different parts or separate matches. it can be done.

file size is an issue (but not with bittorrent), i know. getting people to contribute their time and energy is another. if not torrents, then there are file sharing sites that have caps in the gbs rather than mbs. there’s options out there. i’d be more than happy to stream content in full on my site on a week to week basis (full length, high quality) if it was available. this isn’t something that’s just crossed my mind. it’s been on my mind for a long time now and with digital distribution making headways, this is something that’s possible. i’d love to hear anyone’s thoughts, positives and negatives.
