(Reforma via Jazzo) CMLL thought about it, and decided Blue Panther vs Villano V will remain a mano y mano mask match. They seem pretty sure of it, but of course we’ve got two press conferences between now and then (tomorrow for the August 29th show, sometime after August 29th to announce the anniversary show) for Atlantis and Ultimo Guerrero to intrude and demand yet again.
Odd how CMLL runs it’s big angles at press conferences instead of their own shows, isn’t it?
AAA posted a note last night announcing Juvi’s departure, and wishing him will in his future endeavors. Total WWE speak. Unsurprisingly, they haven’t gotten around to removing his bio. Juvi’s departure got a tiny article in Ovaciones, which is actually pretty good considering the many pages dedicated to the Women’s 10M Synchronized Diving bronze medalists. Juvi’s apparently having a press conference about this today.
CMLL posted a news bite about Princesa Sujei wanting a shot at Marcela’s national women’s title based on a Tuesday match, but hasn’t posted results from that show yet.

I had no idea IWRG’s offical site got overhauled. It looks so much better. The people behind the Gladiator are obviously running it (which explains why they’re also doing live pbp from there), but it’s functional which puts it well ahead the last version.
The Examiners examines Mistico and Ultimo Guerrero‘s Gladiator drinks. Sounds like a strong review for Mistico, and more mixed for UG. I like the idea for a lighter drink featuring Dark Angel.
Imparcial interviews referee El Checo, who talks about his short career as a wrestler (yet another Relamapgo Negro until a knee injury two years ago) and his aspirations of making it to Arena Mexico.
This story about a combo metal band/luchador troop sounds a bit sensationalized, if not fictionalized at parts.
Ohtani’s Jacket writes about Jerry Estrada’s worthlessness in a hair match vs Satanico from ’90.
Silver King wants to take La Parka Jr. to Tokyo for a tag team tournament in October. Silver King also seems slightly obsessed with the titles he’s won, at least compared to everyone else in Mexico.
Wagnermania posted video of A Ras de Lona’s news stories (highlight is Felino being freaked out by a dog), stellar moments, and highlights from Sunday 08/03, Tuesday 08/05, Friday 08/08 Sadly, it looks like they’ve dropped showing the openers and don’t even show the segunda from Friday. The people marking out for the trios title change are pretty entertaining.
The first clip has an interview with Perro and spotlights his injury as when he took a bump over the ropes to the floor. It’s not a simple bit, but it is pretty routine and not like some sort of bad collision. The bicep just gave out on him.

100 bucks says Juvi either goes to EMLL or TNA because I do not believe Vince wants Juvi back.
R.I.P Mexican Powers.
“Total WWE speak” means that the article sounded as coming from the WWE page, not that Juvie is headed there… neither CMLL nor TNA, I’m guessing NWE.
“Odd how CMLL runs it’s big angles at press conferences instead of their own shows, isn’t it?”
That’s being a problem for them for most of the year, maybe even last year, no one needs to watch the shows since stuff will happen off screen, that’s why the ratings are dropping imo.
IF Villano vs Panther doesn’t turn into a multiman match, I think it will end up being in the undercard with a stronger match or as a warmup show for the 26th, in any instance, it’s not looking good. When Villano and the other guy turned on Metal, there was no major heat, when Guerreros Negros got there, there was no pop, there was just a murmur as if people were talking with each other… this ain’t going anywhere and only the anniversary name value might help it.
IWRG’s site seems to be now under ‘thegladiadores.com’ management
I like so much the V5 vs Panther mask match; It can be amazing… or garbage, if another wrestlers got involved in.
IWRG’s site looks a little nicer. They’re using wordpress and should try to get a better template. It feels like everything is randomly placed on the front page. Probably due to the strange 3-column format their using. Maybe just needs a little tweaking to it since I notice the empty space at the top of the page. Just my opinion, but I’ve been working with wordpress on 2-3 sites a lot lately. Plan on switching luchaworld.com to it as well with a new layout.
I guess we’ll soon find out what happens with the Mexican Powers and if its true that anyone wearing their gear, entering to their music, will get cheered no matter who it is.
Better new would be if Konnan was gone
Questions and my predicitons:
What happens to Crazy Boy and Ultimo Gladiator? (Prediction, Crazy becomes new leader of the M.P.’s)
Does either FdT or Hermanidad take credit for running Juvi out of AAA? (Prediciton, Joe Lider will brag his ass off about running Juvi out of AAA.)
Will Juvi come back? (Prediciton, yes, just to kick Lider’s ass and declare that he never ran him off).
From the newest WON, here is the lead story in the AAA section:
“Even though business remains strong, the dressing room is becoming more and more reminiscent of WCW before the collapse. There is the jealousy, the drug problems and the favoritism. Wrestlers are complaining about pay, about drugs in the locker room and the way things were being run, as well as wrestlers frustrated at the same guys always on top and a lack of upward mobility. The undercard wrestlers complained about not getting enough storylines and never knowing what they are going to do next as they are now booking on the fly and nobody knows what they are doing until they get to TV. The feeling expressed is that Antonio Pena came across as a father figure or older brother to most of the wrestlers and not really a boss, while Dorian Roldan, who is in his nearly 20s, and father Joachim, are bosses who are like Eric Bischoff in that they do everything for the top stars and don’t discipline them, but have no time for the undercard wrestlers. The latest straw was at the 8/8 tapings in Ciudad Madero when Abismo Negro showed up and did a run-in. There were complaints about Negro missing shows or coming late and never being disciplined, and then he was finally fired, and now he’s back.”
Here’s another one:
“Vampiro is another one where a lot of the wrestlers have heat with, because he’s quit so many times, and the last time, he buried AAA on the way out and ran opposition, but Dorian still brought him back. The biggest opposition to him are La Parka and Cibernetico. Right now he and Konnan are on good terms. Parka and Cibernetico are mad he’s been brought back after that since they have always stayed in AAA since they became stars. Others think that even though Vampiro is older now and his heartthrob days to little girls are over, that Parka and Cibernetico know that as big stars as they are now, and they are, that they aren’t anywhere near as over as Vampiro was in his heyday.”
Meltzer also seems to believe there is a new Gronda. I gotta check last week’s AAA TV and it should be easy to tell if it’s the same guy with a new look or a new guy completely.
Same applies to CMLL, Wagner, Niebla, Shocker, Black Warrior, Tozcano (briefly) and countless others returning without being disciplined, without forgetting about the jealousy, drugs and favoritism. I guesss Meltzer thinks only American wrestling counts, but that’s been happening in Mexico’s promotions for decades.
Okay but why jump down CMLL’s throat? Discuss the current AAA situation. Just b/c CMLL does it too doesn’t make it right.
I’m not jumping down on CMLL’s throat, simply pointing out that’s how the business works in Mexico, and it’s not even limited to lucha libre, is kind of the local culture to bitch about others and blaming them for everything. Peña was great, right, but he had probably hundreds of guys abandoning ship while on charge, if anything, these 2 years without Peña have a way lower rate of guys gone, and most of them were not even used anymore.
One can not compare AAA to WCW simply because WCW was running in the red just surviving on Turners money while AAA still post profits. Maybe UWA is a better comparision, Flores died in 87, by 89 they were still doing good but then EMLL got a huge boost because of Peña and UWA was devastated with the newer stars going to AAA and the older guys to EMLL, so eventually UWA went out of business, you can also count on UWA having the same “wcw” problems (jealousy, the drugs and the favoritism). The diference is that now lucha libre is in a downspiral and not in a boom like in 89…
Since when did Meltzer lucha news become valid? He must of went to ByL or something and thought those guys are right.
The difference between WCW and AAA is that the top guys is actually deserving of their spots. Judas,Ciber,Manson,Zorro,Kenzo,Chessman with Konnan,Parka and Vampiro who barely there. Same can be said about CMLL. Guys want instant success and it just don’t work that way. I feel as long as you on tv just about everyweek(like most of the AAA undercard/mid carders) than you fine. Billy Boy for example is on tv more than freaking than most of the CMLL roster including their main eventers.
@Rob: I think “new Gronda” is just trying to make it clear it’s still not the original. He’s saying it’s Gronda II without saying II. He’s still new if you only casually follow the promotion.
I don’t want to write today what I’m going to end up writing tomorrow, but I think if you’d look thru old Observers from the years before Pena’s death, you might find some of the same complaints. Less changes than people care to remember and stars are always treated different than common folk.
Had not read the thing about Vampiro, the funny thing is, it’s pretty much the same thing they’ve said in promos, it would be hilarious if the insider info would turn out to be just a guy watching TV.
@xuisaw: I’m thinking it’s the reverse, and they’ve just allowed Parka and Cibernetico’s characters to say what Parka and Cibernetico feel
Sure, that happens all the time (ie Morenos bashing Apaches monopoly on the undercard), but still, it ain’t “insider info” and if they’re doing promos with that it means they don’t care that much or that at least they know there’s business to be made there.
If anyone can tell me how TNA drew in Asbury on 8/8 according to WON, that would be great. I’m traveling, and won’t see WON for weeks. I want to see if WON gives a figure that different than what I saw in person.
I’ll be at the TNA show in Ft.Myers on Thursday.
they drew 800 in Asbury Park, and 2300 in Trenton.
@Chris: Thanks. I also said 800, so it’s about right. Maybe 700 paid plus comps.
Summer is a bad time to run Asbury. It’s known as a gay resort, and the traffic on the Jersey shore is bad. Or maybe I’m lookin for excuses because I don’t want to admit TNA can’t draw.
I agree totally with the WON article. The article sais that AAA is resembling WCW before it’s colapse and I’ve been saying that all along. As a fan it’s obvious. This is no surprise when the guy booking AAA is following the examples of the guy who killed WCW.
@Daniel: Then it’s obvious you don’t read that well since the “article” never says AAA is resembling WCW.
@xuisaw: Actually, it does. That was the point of the article. It would be amazing if AAA starts to show signs of falling apart, even with the decent tv ratings. It could happen.
@luchalibrelive!: May be even more amazing considering in the past, when they lost talent and looked like they were falling apart, Antonio Pena found a way to keep the ship going. He left the promotion in good condition before passing away, so this would be the first time for the Roldans to keep this going and see how they’ll react when things aren’t going well.
Nope, it says “the dressing room is becoming more and more reminiscent of WCW”, not that the whole prommotion is doing so. And even that point is debatable or just plain wrong since the dressing room has always been like that everywhere.
@Alfredo: I rememeber when Abismo vs. Octagon, Heavy vs. Kick Boxing, and Perros vs. Cobardes were the top feuds after Konnan Inc. left for WCW/Azteca. I followed it through the mags because Galavision coverage was not the best, but did air some of it. It was around this time that Javier Saralegui(Christina’s cousin) ran Galavision, and created “Lucha Lunes”, based on the success of Monday night for WWE and WCW.
@xuisaw: You can try to play with the words all you want but if you know how to read you’ll see that the article is comparing AAA to the dying WCW, and if you’re observant and/or remember WCW you’ll see the comparisons yourself.
