AAA #844 (08/02)

taped 07/05, aired in the US on 08/02

As this show wrapped up, I started to run down the usual steps left before it the recap turns into this post, and I got stuck at the “rip a match so it’s not just a blurb of text” part. Nothing was really worth grabbing on this show. It’s a filler show, and filler shows are going to happen when they do 50 episodes of new stuff (and a couple recap episodes) a year, but it was a filler episode without any good matches either. This was easily one of the most skippable tapings of the year.

I’ve got the minis match and the women’s match below, partly because they get less weeks, and partly because they got less time – they were able to fit together in under 15 minutes. That extra time didn’t really do any favors to the normal matches.

Top Five (women) Wrestlers in Mexico, right now:

1) Fabi
2) Amapola
3) Marcela
4) Mari
5) Ayako

The CMLL women are slipping, because I’m not seeing them as much with no 52mx. I don’t think I’ve seen Lady Apache since she’s been back, and haven’t seen much Dark Angel lately. Still, even if everything else was equal, that’s a pretty solid top 5. Fabi is pretty easily the best , but I’d look forward to any matchup in that group.

And that’s surely enough to fill this space. Maybe we should do this ranking with the minis after the tournament gets going.

some assorted AAA content

AAA Recap videos – these are all 2 minutes or less, but you can catch up on the storylines pretty easily. I wish they were embeddable but understand why they wouldn’t be.

from Irapuato
* Legion wins the main event
* Ayako Hamada joining the Legion – it didn’t click until now that Ayako running in to attack the Apaches in Irapuato was meant to mean she was joining the Legion. It didn’t occur to me, because I’m pretty sure she was already part of the Legion and they forgot. Oh well.
* Chessman’s bad day.
* Konnan’s bad day. Interesting that they took out all his offense

(doesn’t say much for the two tapings in between that they jump to…)

from Solidaridad
* Sagrada & Abismo advancing in the minis tournament
* Psycho Circus @ 164.
* Hart Foundation (and Electro) defeat MPs (and Chessman)
* Chessman wins the battle royal

Other
* Vipers video package. It’s Histeria, Psicosis and Black Abyss, so they knew Antifaz was out of the picture whenever they did it.
* Psycho Circus video package. They used this when they came back after Rey de Reyes, and may have reused it again.
* Vampiro vs Mesias. Much better in video package form. I presume this aired on the Monterrey show to hype the rematch in Queretaro.
* New look Gronda teaser video package
* Pirates vs Elegido (and Alan and Parka) teaser. You know, that match would cost tremendously less than the usual Parka/Mexico vs random strong man/Legion trios match and I’d be just as tremendously more interested in it for Verano de Escandalo. And since they actually did a video package teasing it, it might actually occur.

Looks like Ricky Marvin is in on Thursday. Perhaps he’s the new Guapo!

I’ve seen the Best of TripleMania PPV listed on my cable system during the second half of the month. Comcast has it as $10, which is not crazy unreasonable though you can still do better on DVDs. The crazy unreasonable part is it’s a 1 hour show, for five matches. This is a waste of everyone’s time.

Last Saturday’s recap should be up later.

Update: AAA’s website says Antifaz is the mystery Viper for Friday’s taping. New Guapo is still a mystery.

08/05: Dos Jr. says he’s NOT going to WWE, Villano V/Panther date TBA on Thursday?

(superluchas ) Dos Caras called in to Tercera Caida last night and said he has NOT signed with the WWE – they didn’t meet his terms. Wagnermania posted video of this.

Buried in talk about tonight’s card, a Villano V & Blue Panther mask/match contract signing is announced for Thursday. That would seem to mean it’s happening well before the Anniversary show.

indy (SAT) 08/02 Auditorio de Tijuana [SuperLucha, KrisZ]
1) Zarco b Dragon Chino
2) Arlequin & Sangre Guerrera b Sparks & Super Galgo
3) Halcon Tapatio & Mr. Maldito b Astro Boy & Silver Star
4) Mortiz & Scorpio Jr. b Celestial & Rayman
5) Averno b Místico [copa Auditorio de Tijuana 2008]

Rayman was Místico’s cornerman, but ended up turning on him. There’s video at the SuperLuchas link.

KrisZ’s post also has La Parka Jr. defending AAA and attacking guys like Pegasso for leaving. Parka thinks if they want to main event, they need to work harder for a longer time, but I’ve always thought the problem was they’re not getting a chance to work for a long time; while everyone wants to be used bigger and better, the guys who’ve left have seemed to complain about not being using enough. If more guys were getting 3-4 shows a week, there’d be less of them leaving to book their own schedule.

Laredo Kid is two or three months from returning.

Ohtani’s Jacket writes about Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mr. Nibela (11 years ago), and Dr. Wagner Jr./Mano Negra vs Super Astro/Ultraman Jr. from last year.

More later.
