World Heavyweight Champion to possibly work a dark match elsewhere; lucha world collectively shrugs

With AAA’s focus on their Super Mega Heavyweight Championship for the last year, CMLL’s secured its standing of “least important Heavyweight Championship in the World of any major promotion”. Heck, there was even a little buzz about the NWA title this weekend, because of the title vs title match with ROH. The last buzz about the CMLL title was of the “oh, they got around to scheduling a defense this year – see you in 2009!” sort.

This means I approach the news Dos Caras Jr. will be at WWE SmackDown tomorrow, and possibly have a dark match a bit differently than I would with another group. The title is a non-factor – I doubt WWE is even aware Dos is champ, and I’m not sure CMLL has been informed either. this is simpler a young underutilized talent checking out his options elsewhere.

When Mistico looked like he might leave, I was okay it because he’d already done so much in CMLL. He’s feuded with most everyone, he’s won all the titles it’d mean anything to win, he’s had the big matches and main evented anniversary shows – the problem of “what can he do NEXT?” was started to creep up and is still there. CMLL’s not into ending big feuds, so Mistico’s doing a lot of running in place, and it wouldn’t be the worse thing for him to go to the US for a couple years, then come back and feud with all the same people all over again when it feels newer. (Like Nicho, except without turning into Nicho.)

Dos’ situation is really different. Rare can you say a Heavyweight Champion has done absolutely nothing, but that’s pretty close to accurate here. Since coming to CMLL in ’04, Dos has been pushed near or at the top of the cards, but there’s nothing you could mark down as a significant rivalry. The stuff with Universo 2000 never turned into a genuine feuds, Dos was just the guy to lose to Unvierso for title matches, and the best tecnico eligible when CMLL decided to phase out Universo. He’s had scattered matches with UG, but they’ve meant nothing more than scattered matches. He should have had some rivalry with Lizmark Jr., but you can’t fight an invisible man. (He’s been gone for over a month again and no one’s noticed.)

Dos Jr. is not the world’s greatest luchador – some nights he’s good, some nights he’s bad, he averages out to okay – but he’s capable of a lot more than they’ve actually gotten out of him. CMLL’s focus when it comes to these things is always strange, but when you consider they’ve worked hard on getting Leono over than their best shot at a native heavyweight wrestler (who can occasionally do MMA fights for you), it makes less sense than usual. I’m not saying it’s a a straight line from “Dos Jr. gets nothing to do” to “Dos Jr. tries out for WWE”, but if CMLL really was The Best Wrestling Promotion In The World they claim to be, their best and their brightest wouldn’t be checking out their options.

Dos is a lot like his cousin Sicodelico Jr. in terms of what WWE is looking for, though would probably be looking for a better deal based on his CMLL spot. I’ve mentioned before that Dos is one of the guys I thought WWE should be looking for if they wanted more lucha guys and still think that, but who knows how it works out when it comes to money.

side note: One last time, let’s note one lucha heavyweight champion is more than willing to do show WWE what he can do, another thinks he’s above it…

Edit: I meant Dr. Wagner Jr., and his balking at trying out. Which I don’t think was the actual issue, but the easiest way to get out of actually doing it.

  1. i’m assumng you’re talking about Cibernetico when you you say he thinks he’s above it, but honestly Cibernetico would have no place in WWE. he’s super over in Mexico and is one of the better mic workers there. in WWE he’d never be a main eventer. he wouldnt get over, and he’d just be the spanish Batista.

Dos fits to a degree, but it’s more WWE looking for someone to replace Mysterio. Mysterio has been getting hurt and out for at least 4 months once a year for the past 4 years now. each time he returns, he’s in worse shape physically then when he left, he’s alot slower and he’s horrendous on the mic. they want another Mysterio, only heavyweight and bigger. they dont need another flyer, as they have Matt Sydal for that now. WWE wants a technico hispanic to draw in more hispanic fans. they basically want a backup Mysterio.

  2. @Bruce:

Bruce I agree that WWE would do nothing with Cibernetico but you can’t call him a Spanish Batista because he’s nowhere near his size. My guesse is that they would push him big innitially and then within a month he’d be jobbing and eventually released, as with the Mexicools.

Even though AAA has focused on their Mega championship the darn thing is more worthless than the WWE cruiserweight title.

  3. Cibernetico always reminded me of Lex Luger especially during his awesome 96-97 babyface run(come on, the matches was not technical masterpieces but the fans ate up everything he done and he did everything right with his limited skills). I’m sure Cubs remember Lex Luger 96-97 run, definition of a good babyface.

  4. I wonder if he’d pass if he’s told he has to go through the whole developmental process.

Its amazing considering Dos Caras Jr. is the CMLL Heavyweight Champion and I feel like him leaving isn’t a big deal to CMLL.

El Guapito leaving/returning to AAA came off like a bigger deal for 2-3 weeks than Dos Jr. possibly leaving CMLL has so far.

  5. here’s an interesting thought:

if this had happened a few weeks ago and CMLL thought he might go, would they have booked the title match with Ultimo Guerrero differently and had Ultimo win the title? if he goes now, it’ll probaly be vacant for at least a month. maybe Niebla will get the title, it might have been part of the deal with him jumping.

  6. Cibernetico is the Mexican Batista? Nope, more like Mexico’s answer to the Rock, all he needs to do is raise the “Gente’s eyebrow” and add the “Gente’s Elbow”.

I know Dos Caras Jr is tall as hell (6′-4″), how much does he weigh? Because I cannot see him picking up the Big Show or Triple H with that Press Slam/German Suplex finisher of his. Edge and the Edgeheads maybe but not the other 2, and all the WWE will do is feed him to Khali and Big Show as Jobber To The Stars.

I actually said the WWE should have a working relationship with AAA, but the downside is well, three current members of the AAA roster were fired from there (Teddy Hart, Juvi and Nicho), Super Porky was on SmackDOWN and was rarely used, Jack Evans is under contract to Ring of Honor and would the WWE even want to do it? I think if they did, it would boost SmackDOWN and ECW tremendously but the other thing is, except for Juvi, Konnan, Mesias, and maybe Cibernetico, does anyone else speak english?

  7. @ k.D.b.:

Dos’s weight is listed as 211 lbs. on luchawiki and 210 lbs. on wikipedia. with his being 6’5.5″ on both sites.

  8. Everybody compares Cybernetico to The Rock. I don’t see him as The Rock I see him more as a Stone Cold Steve Austin. It’s the hell rasing, the skulls, and THE STUNNER!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you guys not see that?

  9. So, was there a dark match involving Dos Caras Jr. at the Smackdown tapings? I did not read something like that in the reports at other homepages. And I did not read something about a dark match of Sicodelico Jr. in the taping reports of the last weeks.

  10. @ Daniel

I see it, I was just joking about Ciber being the Rock, especially with his catchphrase and how he says half and the crowd finishes it.

  11. According to a byl post, Record is reporting that Dos Jr thought he was not offered enough money by WWE and declined signing for them.

  12. @xuisaw: Read between the lines? Although the WWE has a monopoly and racists run the promotion so it may be true.
