06/29: CMLL TV

Recapping the CMLL TV situation, if you haven’t been in the comments this weekend

situation A:
– the latest Wrestling Observer had a note about Dr. Morales leaving CMLL’s broadcast crew over CMLL wanting Box Y Lucha (Morales’ other job) to pull Arturo Rivera’s column. The WON has it as Morales refusing to do so, but what I’m reading now is CMLL went over his head and got Rivera’s column turfed, so Morales resigned in protest.

situation B
– CMLL’s show had been listed for a one hour on Televisa/Galavision’s programming listings (and still is on the on-line listings)…
– …but never aired, replaced by a classic futbol game (something they wasn’t time senstitive – there was no neccesity to pre-empet the show, like in times past when it was bumped for the Olympics.)
– The change was known to CMLL in advance, because Cadena3’s production crew took over the work on the show on Friday, and spliced together Tuesday and Friday matches for their weekly 2 hours.
– Accion, Televisa’s weekend sports roundup show, only aired highlights of AAA’s show (Vamp/Mesais, and twice as long to make up for no CMLL)

It’s not clear that A has anything to do with B, except for the timing. Superluchas has a note on the pre-emption, and says it’s only a one week deal. It’s possible CMLL could’ve known in advance they were going to be off this week – they’re rematching the main event, and the novatos cibernetico is not a big deal to CMLL. Per usual, CMLL has said nothing at all.

It’s interesting CMLL choose to go after Rivera’s Box Y Lucha column and not the Ovaciones column that actually ticked them off. Perhaps they did and didn’t have enough leverage there.

Besides that, we’re waitng for results from tonight’s Arena Coliseo show for the two title matches (though Rob just commented Flash/Stuka won their match), and tonight’s AAA taping to see who actually showed up. You can scratch Tinieblas Jr. off that list. He was telling people at the AAA/indy/Tirantes press conference that he was going to be wrestling the show as an indy guy, because he and AAA never came to an agreement. Surely AAA must’ve felt differently if they started advertising him for shows…

I didn’t really write anything about the NWA Mexico press conference earlier, because there didn’t seem to be any actual news, but this post reminded me I should note the non-progress. Once again, Demon announced the exciting roster of exactly everyone who’s working the Todos x el Todos/UMLL shows already, and the first show as “not as far away as it’ll never happen, but not as close as we can actually name a date.” You know, at least LXLL or whatever it was had the decency to run a show.

Negro Casas says the people were much more into the match with he and Heavy as rudos, so that’s the right move for them.

Next Week’s Coliseo card

CMLL (SUN) 07/06 Arena Coliseo [SuperLuchas #270]
1) Angel de Oro & Sombra de Plata vs Carrona & Cholo
2) Goddess, Princesa Blanca, Sahori vs Amapola, La Seductora, Rosa Negra
3) Hijo del Faraon, Metalik, Stuka Jr. vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Bronco, Vangelis
4) Grey Shadow, La Sombra, Valiente vs Black Warrior, Olímpico, Sangre Azteca
5) Dos Caras Jr., Místico, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

That’s a big leap for Hijo del Faraon. HIS father’s not also a commissioner, is he?

In an article previewing WWE’s visit next week, Peru’s La Pr1mera mentions the glory years of Peruvian wrestling: first during the 30s (featuring El Oso Griego, Aquaman, El Yanqui and El Indio Aragaon) and the 70s (the Coloso del Catch promotion – this group reads like the usual “wrestling takes off when TVs become commenplace” deal.) They also mention the group that’s running now, which seems CMLL influnced.

  1. It was not a classic game in the sense that it was a re run from 94, it was the old 94 MexTeam against an Toluca all-stars old guys in an homage match, I guess the UWA guys could go to Televisa and ask for a show with the same cards they run at the time at Toreo (or Neza)…

Also, the rest of the day was filler programming, so the show was not preempted for that game comming up in unexpectedly. Speaking of filler, the Telemundo shows are used only on weekdays, they dumped the old local novelas and replaced with Miami crap. So maybe Konnan is not the one bringing the foreign guys, it’s Televisa’s intent for Gala…

Maybe CMLL is upset that in the future the show will go preempted for the Olympics and said “I don’t need you at all” and this has nothing to do with Morales and Rivera, I mean, they’re just employees while CMLL is a longstanding customer or associate…

  2. I’d like to see a CMLL/Televisa feud last through Anniversary, or the end of the year. It would be interesting to see if attendance moves up, down, or stays the same at all the venues CMLL runs, without a weekly Telerisa slot.

  3. @xuisaw: you hit the nail on the head when you noted that CMLL’s sponsors won’t be happy. Losing Telerisa is losing about 1,000,000 homes per week. That’s based on 20,000,000 Galavision homes in Mexico getting a 5 rating.

  4. So what should CMLL do if they don’t return to Televisa?

I guess Canal 52mx should go to 2 hrs, and tape Tuesday. Fox Sports should tape every other Sunday and get two episodes out of one taping. Fox can’t go to more than one hour weekly because of commitments to sports.

C3 should tape on Friday, and be the “main show” since it’s on “free tv” in Mexico City, plus has coverage on SKY and Cablevision.

If 52mx didn’t lose SKY and Cablevision, I’d say it should be the main show for now, until everyone makes up.

  5. Out of the 100 or so comments I’ve read on the Mexican forums about no CMLL on Galavision, about 85 of them have been people complaining that they don’t get C3. So how would airing the Friday show there by a positive?

  6. Faraon is just being put in with the other Generacion 75 guys so I guess it’s alright. Looks like it could be a wild match so glad it’s in the FSE spot. It is odd though to see him working the Arena Mexico opener and then the Arena Coliseo tercera. That doesn’t seem to common unless it’s a sub.

The link to your AAA reviews doesn’t work.:(

  7. Can you imagine the ByL forum if next Saturday the time for the “Lucha Libre” hour listed in the webpage comes and it turns out to be a AAAMania highlights package?

  8. If CMLL/Televisa don’t work out, I expect a lot of jumps from CMLL to AAA. Garza and Shocker would be the first two that comes to mind.

  9. @Rob: Those might be the people who live outside Mexico City that don’t get C3 because their cable system does not carry it. But they probably get Fox Sports or 52. If they’re on the internet in Mexico, they probably have some form of pay tv.

  10. Now someone on ByL said 52mx is coming out with a Noticiero CMLL show on July 15. Hmmm. Sounds like a concept I had months ago when I suggested a weekly magazine format show in response to the horrible FSE show.

This Noticiero show should air on FSE in both Mexico and US, not 52mx. If it’s even real.

  11. @USAUSA1: Garza jumping would be a good thing. Shocker? You’re assuming Arena Mexico and Coliseo attendance is going to drop because CMLL may not be on Televisa any longer. CMLL pays their talent based on the gates at their main venues, and bookings outside Mexico City. I expect both categories to hold up for some time even if they leave Televisa.

  12. Cesar on ByL says the problem with Televisa is resolved and this new Noticiero show has nothing to do with any problems.

So if CMLL has just one-hour of tv on Televisa each week, does that really help them at the box office? I don’t know.

  13. Even if the situation is “resolved”, there are some big egos over there and we don’t know how volatile the situation is. If CMLL leaves Televisa, the ArMex attendance my grow since fans will need to go to see their guys, but, many guys won’t be that interested, mainly Wagner, plus Park and Hijo del Santo, the later two are out already, but along with Latin Lover, they’re the biggest indy stars. TV or not TV, Santo would make the attendance go up, but I don’t see him wanting to work ArMex unless there are megabucks involved if he’s not getting national exposure. Also, the cash flow might suffer from sponsors…

And Televisa won’t let that timeslot go that easy, they’ll probably give AAA another show, or someone like Santo or Demon might want to take advantage of it… of course, CMLL might just go to TVAzteca, which would actually be worse than doing nothing…

BTW, there’s a rumor that the surprise luchador from Irapuato is… Marco Corleone.

  14. @xuisaw: I hope AAA is willing to construct a long ramp for Corleone. That’s part of his gimmick you know.

  15. He can do his dive over the top rope to the floor… but I guess it is just rumors… High Society is done and Shocker will surely try to put back the Guapos, Corleone, even without a team has been kept as main eventer, although lost some starpower with Garza’s turn… who knows, I think CMLL might do a New Guapos vs Corleone and Koslov feud, so I don’t think Mark would be leaving, but we’ll know for sure once the Irapuato results turn in… or next Sunday if they never do…

BTW, in NotiaAAA they said that they’re revamping their webpage…

  16. @xuisaw: I’ll get to this in a sec, but since Marco wrestled last night in Coliseo, he probably wasn’t in Irapuato.

  17. Does anyone here post on ByL?

I’m going to start. It should be fun. I’m using the same name.

  18. “Negro Casas says the people were much more into the match with he and Heavy as rudos, so that’s the right move for them.”

And let the fans say “OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! OK!!!”

  19. “Negro Casas says the people were much more into the match with he and Heavy as rudos, so that’s the right move for them.”

And let the fans say “OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! OK!!! You just turned heel for (really) no fucking reason right?”

  20. @xuisaw: That’s not true. According to the ByL people Cubs posts as Fake_Mistico. I post as arasnay.

    Tskzy si aamizng.

  21. I tried to protect your identity but the truth is, Robert is… Alicia_Mistico… and also posts in the luchaworld board as Rob and La_Mistica (same story but the former is from Spain while the later is from England, see, just the same).

    Hehehe

Disclaimer for those who read stuff in the web and think “this guy’s an insider, he knows something”: I’m kidding.
