breaking down the World X Cup

I don’t know that anyone should be offended/shocked by spoilers, since all I do is post results about matches before they air on television, but I’m feeling generous. (And also want to see how this break feature works.) This is more figuring out the most likely scenario than looking at all of them, in case it makes a difference.

First, the matches taped last night. All these matches theoretically could be bounced around between 07/03 and 07/10, but I think I’ve got it split right. There’s also the chance the later matches aren’t tournament matches, but I presume they were and don’t want to find out.

07/03:
Rey Bucanero b Alex Koslov
Milano Collection A.T. b Curry Man

07/10:
Doug Williams (INTL) b Yoshino
Kaz b Ultimo Guerrero

I don’t understand why there are now two singles matches for each team, but I’ll roll with it. The things I do understand:

– it becomes very obvious why we never got the “Also, Volador and Averno have their visas” article. From other mentions about TNA, I gather the plan was only to bring in half the team for this taping, which means either Volador or Averno is just limited to the elimination match on the PPV. Hopefully not both, since either would be better suited for the Ultimate X match.

– Rey Bucanero OWNS Alex Koslov right now. Beat him in Arena Coliseo to retain the CMLL LH title, beat him in the Impact Zone in the World X Cup, Alex is going to have to petition the NWA for a title match in Stalingrad if he’s going to have a chance here.

(YES I KNOW)

– Ultimo Guerrero losing to Kaz makes me sad. Even if that’s what I ought to be expecting otu of this.

– if all those singles matches counted, the whole single match round means NOTHING – every team won one, lost one, got the same amount of points out of it.

ASSUMPTION 1: no one’s announced a rule for a final tie, so no ties
ASSUMPTION 2: no one’s going to win both the elimination match and the Ultimate X match. That’d be just beyond pointless
ASSUMPTION 3: the elmination match will be before Ultimate X, as in past tournaments

If I believe those for a second, then we know

– the winner of the elimination match clinches second place. They’ll never have enough points to win, and can’t expect to earn any more.

– if Team Mexico or Team USA win the elimination match, then the other one is winning the Ultimate X match and the overall Cup (or we’d break one of those assumptions). If Team International or Team Japan win, then everyone still has a chance to win overall without a tie.

I suspect Team Japan will win the elimination match to give them their big win, and team USA is planned to win the entire deal-e-bob. Assuming they have an angle planned coming out of this, they probably can make it work regardless of who actually wins the World X Cup (because it’s of low significance), and would be willing to change the winner if it made business/alliance sense. But I’m not exactly holding my breath for Team Mexico to get any more wins.

  1. Well, at the very least, this whole X-cup thing is giving me some amusing matches and a reason to tune into TNA — that being said, Kaz going over Ultimo does really suck.

Too bad ROH has the deal with AAA — I’d still love to see GDI or Averno/Mephesto do some dates with that promotion.

  2. i understand that Kazarian is their future guy and they’ve been pushing him for awhile, but they should not have made him go over Ultimo Guerrero. they should have brought in Averno for that match, Ultimo shouldnt be jobbing in singles matches to guys he is beter than. dont get me wrong, Kaz is a good wrestler and fun to watch, but Ultimo Guerrero is the better of the 2, is the bigger star, and is much more known.

though, on another board, you’d be surprised at how many people were asking who Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero were. one of the better tag teams ever and some people never heard of them. i was in complete shock.

  3. Come on Bruce, Kaz is there for the long haul. Ultimo Guerrero is only there for till the ppv and that’s it. It makes sense that Kaz won. Although he should have beat Volador.

  4. I think the surprise is not much that Kaz won and a CMLL guy lost, because both things were bound to happen, but that Rey won and Ultimo lost. That’s the exact opposite of how they’re booked in CMLL.

I’m guessing someone did see Alex and Rey work on FSE and decided it’d be good for them to work together again, and since Doug Williams was going to get the win for Team International and everyone had to get one win, Rey had to win and Ultimo had to lose.
