06/16: Abismo to CMLL?, Coliseo Tag tournament, AAA TV

Luchando Libre says Abismo Negro will be joining CMLL as soon as July 8. I wonder if he could actually use that name (and look) – I would think he’d be stuck in a “A. B. Ismo Negr-O” situation. (And I’m not typing that again ever!)

The same post says Blue Demon Jr. will announce the first NWA Mexico show tomorrow. I can not wait.

CMLL.com says Euforia & Nosferatu beat Angel Azteca Jr. & Mascara Purpura to make it to the finals of the Arena Coliseo tag team tournament. (Off the top of my head, that’s the biggest success for Angel Azteca Jr. so far.)

The eight teams in the second block are

* Astro Boy, Molotov
* Flash, Stuka Jr.
* Neutron, Sensei
* Fabián el Gitano, Mictlán
* Bronco III, Diamante Negro
* Nitro, Skandalo
* Loco Max, Vangelis
* Pólvora, Vaquero

I’m picking Flash & Stuka Junior.

Ovaciones did upload yesterday’s newspaper after I put up the blog entry. Not a lot of new info in Arturo Rivera’s column, except for finding out Prez Roldan suffered a broken nose at TripleMania, and they’re blaming it on Konnan.

If you didn’t see it in the comments, the next announced AAA tapings are

June 29 Irapuato (#843, 07/06 MEX, 07/26 US)
July 05 Acapulco (#844, 07/13 MEX, 08/02 US)
July 13 Salamanca (#845, 07/20 MEX, 08/09 US)
July 20 Monterrey (#846, 07/27 MEX, 08/16 US)

The first day of the next NOAH tour is also 06/29, so Ricky’s probably back in Japan before any more TV. Too bad. This schedule does not seem to conflict with any ROH dates.

CMLL (SAT) 06/14 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]
1) Rey Pantera b Al Tacua
2) Azteca Warrior & Dark War b Atomo & Gato Fantasma
3) Memo Valles & Sky b Cosmos & Turbina
4) Black Diamond & Silver Star b Orquidea Negra & Potro Jr.
5) Místico & Stuka Jr. b Averno & Virus

CMLL Tercera Guerra (SAT) 06/14 Plaza Monumental Monterrey [RFC, rudo_2008 @ SML]
1) Furor b Virus, Orquidea Negra, Stuka Jr., Hijo de Trueno, Hijo de Matematico, Turbina, Azteca Warrior, Sky, Memo Valles, Nightmare, Dranzaer, Scravos, Voltaje Negro [ciber]
2) Mascarita Dorada & Tzuki b Mini Halloween & Pequeño Damian 666
3) Chavo Guerrero Sr., El Puma, King Haku b Caifan I, Pierroth, Rey Misterio Sr.
4) Dos Caras Jr., LA Park, Marco Corelone b Billy Blade, Gangrel, Joey Mercury
5) Grey Shadow, Hijo de Fantasma, Místico b Averno, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mephisto

A few photos at the link. At some point, Haku just stopped aging. Kinda creepy.

indy (SUN) 06/15 Palenque de la Feria Saltillo [vanguardia]
4) Blue Demon Jr. & El Hijo Del Santo b Hator & Super Parka

The totally independent Dr. Wagner can’t work shows with El Hijo del Santo, as everyone figured.

Box Y Lucha #2875 has Heavy Metal being shaved. There’s headlines on Niebla’s jump and Ricky Cruz losing his mask. The contents list Scorpio and Calo leaving AAA, and that appears to be the only AAA coverage in this magazine.

The interview with Niebla is on their website. Niebla explains he left to CMLL because he didn’t want to go backward. (That puzzled me, but I guess he means “on the card.”) Niebla apologizes to AAA if they don’t like the way he left, but he feels he was straight with them about what he wanted.

Titanes El Ring #5 has Ultimo Guerrero on the great. It was just two weeks ago I was chatting with someone about found lucha libre magazines that we didn’t know even existed, and here’s another one.

quick site notes: I was originally hoping to move over to the new blogging software tonight, but I’m not sure I’ll be ready. I’ll see how it goes later. I’ve got a plan for the next time I do live coverage, so it’s not a complete failure like Friday. Hopefully, there’ll be a chance to try it out before the anniversary show.

  1. Joey Matthews is just looking for problems again. why would he use the Joey Mercury name and tights. he better hope WWE doesnt find out about this one as they own the name and gimmick. and why would he even want to go by that name anyway? he’s more well known and has done more in wrestling under the Joey Matthews name.

  2. I think they actually listed him as Joe Mercury, but I put in the y to save a question.

  3. I’m with Cubs on the Group B prediction. A 2-of-3 falls Flash/Stuka Jr. vs Euforia/Nosferatu match could be tons of fun…

    I don’t know what to make of the Abismo rumor other than I’ll believe it when I see it.

    All these jumps from AAA must have something to do with the fact non-Mexicans are running the company and foreigners are getting all the preferential treatment. I mean… how would you feel if you were a guy like Zumbido who works every day, sometimes twice, is known to the fans and brings them to the shows and then you see a guy like Bryan Danielson come in… a guy who isn’t over, a guy who won’t be over and he gets put on the biggest show of the year instead of you plus gets his apartment in Mexico paid for, doesn’t have to work the tiny crap shows and can leave whenever he wants to take bookings in the States. I’m shocked there hasn’t been more of a mutiny in AAA although there is nowhere else to go. The seeds are definitely being planted for AAA to go out of business though. I’m not saying or implying it’ll be an immediate thing but everthing taking place this year should be remembered come a year from now. Just wait and see…

  4. OK, in June 9, 2009 I’ll laugh at your prediction, at least you set a definite date instead of the “pending Konnan tecnico superpush” that’s being happening for like 3 years…

  5. How has this affect AAA business? They been doing this for almost two years and business is still business as usual and the hardcore base and casual fans are still there and seems to be happy.

    Abismo got his own problems and he will take them to CMLL. It’s not AAA fault. Niebla is getting a big payday from CMLL, so this is more likely a money issue. Scorpio and Calo will be back, they just mad. It’s not like CMLL is any better at pushing guys,they have no other place to really go.

  6. Listen, I hate to come off as Daniel but…

    Vampiro, Marvin, Danielson (or Teddy Jack if you prefer), Lashley, Silver King, Evans, Hart = no Palacio sellout + CMLL (which also didn’t sellout) out drew them

    Latin Lover = sellout

    OR

    special one time appearence by Santo = sellout

    The people in charge just have their heads so far up their asses that they don’t know the audience they are catering too and while they had a great show production wise – there is no excuse for the biggest show of the year not drawing a sellout or beating their competition.

    MLW’s production values were unbelievable. They sure went far…

  7. There’s no proof CMLL outdrew them, they’re saying both drew like 80%, since Palacio holds 22000 vs 16700, AAA outdrew them, and the real problem is that prices were twice and even thrice as high for AAAMania, the top shelf, which was closed in Palacio, was at 150 pesos with kids having to pay to enter, while that same area was 70 in ArMex with kids entering for free (or a tip to the guy at the door).

    Of course, Peña would never have allowed prices to be that high, which is the biggest difference but anyways, still they probably did their biggest gate to date.

  8. Find me any other promotion in the world that would be HAPPY to have run their BIGGEST SHOW OF THE YEAR and not sold out the place.

    If it were any promotion other than AAA that was bringing in U.S. talent in place of Mexican talent and drawing fewer people because of it – what would you say to that, Chui?

    I’m almost 3 matches into the CMLL show and I can already say the AAA show had better wrestling. CMLL’s “big show” is nothing more than your typical Friday night show so far and both early matches have been huge disapointments while the tercera so far has been completely by the numbers.

  9. There are plenty of promos around the world that have fell short from selling THEIR BIGGEST SHOW OF THE YEAR much worse than AAAMania 08, we don’t need to go farther than Anniversario 06 where CMLL did like 7000 or so… less than 50%.

    I’m not saying that mania was a hit, but your prognosis is wrong, the card missed a big stip match, we all knew that, but it had nothing to do with the foreigners, or not that much.

    I’ve been saying for a long time, the prices are too high, I checked the ticketmaster page and it looks as if there was no walk in business for AAA, which is unheard off I guess there were families that arrived to the event and were turned off at the prospect of paying 700+ to get in, maybe they opted to go to ArMex and sneak in for a fraction of the price.

  10. I’m watching Tercera Caida, and according Marisela Peña said that CMLL is the owner of the Mr Niebla gimmick and that CMLL used lawyers to prevent AAA using him at Palacio, can be totally bogus or have something to do with being in Mexico City? I say bogus but what am I to know…

  11. And Roldan said that they’re keeping the Abismo Negro gimmick, and that they’ll run Juan de la Barrera in August.

  12. I started offering excuses weeks ago for a non-sellout at Palacio.

    “WWE just ran two big shows there”

    “Fans stayed home to watch on PPV”

    “CMLL is throwing competition”

    Still, I think Chui is right about the tickets being too pricey. AAA is popular with teens working class families. How much does a working class man with a good blue collar job make a week? A fireman or railroad worker makes about $200 a week in Mexico.

    Juan de la Barrera is where AAA belongs.

  13. AAA sold the first half of the upper deck with a week in advance, that was 150, the upper half was also 150 pesos, they should have offered that at a much lower price.

    I’m seeing what happened in Mty, part of the problem is that they’ve been running shows at 1 dollar general admittance and even less than that and now I don’t think fans think it is worthy to spend big bucks for shows with “superstars”, WWE and Verano de Escandalo did well, but Mistico vs Perro was a shame…

    I wonder if CMLL is en route of doing the same and spoiling the Mexico City market, they ran a free show last month (the one done by Record), a 3 dollar general admittance, 5 dollar most expensive seat and a handful of 2×1 shows in ArMex… and even at that, they drew less than the show with Wagner… what will happen when CMLL can’t keep up their promises and Wagner leaves?

  14. >Juan de la Barrera is where >AAA belongs.

    Which may be true, but isn’t that one of the keystone buildings of the NWA-Mexico deal?

    I really should stop thinking about NWA Mexico.

  15. Can’t wait to hear the NWA-Mexico annoucement this week.

    Last time AAA left Juan de la Barrera, I know it was over the rights fee for tv, not rental fees, so if it’s worked out this time, AAA could run there two or three times a year.

  16. Yeah, it looks pretty obvious. Flash and Stuka’s pretty much a lock for this bracket to meet the Infernales in the final, which should be good – and is pretty much how i suspected it would end up after seeing Euforia and Nosferatu were in (well, for whatever duo from Flash, Super Nova and Stuka they were going to team up before i knew Nova was off to Spain)

    Unless……

    Nah, i’m not even going to contemplate that. I can’t bring myself to even type that suggestion :o :(

  17. OH NO HENRIK! FABIAN AND MICTLAN WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Well obviously not.:P Flash/Stuka Jr. vs Euforia/Nosferatu! Looks like it’s in the FSE spot as well so this could be fun!

  18. Bronco and Diamante Negro were to win but Bronco was broken hearted when he read the byl forum and saw that “he’s as bad as Hijo del Solitario in his beginnings” and couldn’t keep it up… I mean, that’s worse than Valiente & Metalik botches combined!!!

    Speaking of whom, weird that it was Euforia the guy who almost saw his colleagues getting killed in both instances…

  19. @xuisaw: I was gonna mention that and then I couldn’t remember if it was Euforia or Nosferatu that didn’t catch Metalik. Maybe he has some invisible field around him that pushes guys away as they fly at him…
