AAA #832

taped 04/10 (mostly), aired in the US on 05/10

Stories that were told well on this show
– Lider and Juvi’s break up. If this was involving slightly different people, I’d be way into it.

– Black Abyss pretending to be Abismo Negro. This took zero effort – the crowd thought he turned rudo again before they thought he wasn’t actually Abismo Negro.

I’ve been thinking about this the last few days, kinda inspired by the animated featurette of all things, and I’m convinced that AAA will always have certain characters part of the show regardless of who’s under the mask. There’s been plenty of Mascarita Sagrada and there will be more if this one leaves. When this La Parka and this Octagon hang it up, AAA will probably want to create new ones. There won’t necessarily be someone named Latin Lover, but there will always be someone trying to be Latin Lover (and how strange is that Alan Stone seems to have leaped ahead there.) And there will always be someone reprising the role of Abismo Negro, even if it isn’t the ex-Winners. It’s too much of a trademark Antonio Pena creation for them to let go, at least for a very long time.

– depressed, bitter Chessman, tired of being the stunt dummy and finally coming to the realization that it’s never been about the Hellbrothers, but always about what’s best for Cibernetico. Or at least that’s how I read into it, maybe you saw it differently.

This bit, and the Mexican Powers bit, where you can see the match light the wick, see the dynamite sitting on the other end of that wax string, and anticipate the big explosion seem both unusual for AAA (home of the Zorro double turn of ’07) and fun to watch unfold.

Stories that were not told as well
– I swear the preview was hyping it up like Pasion Cristal was supposed to be part of a fascinating new trio with Cassandro and Pimpi. I think this is the last time we’ve seen any of these people.
– Rudos Sect vs Rudo Legion. If the Toluca crowd can’t get in to a match, you screwed up. AAA’s crowd gets very into tecnicos vs rudos, I don’t know why they need to have so many different rudo groups who don’t get along.

This wasn’t the greatest week for matches. I didn’t have any idea who was in till later, but the opener (actually taken from the previous taping) was pretty fun:

06/16: Abismo to CMLL?, Coliseo Tag tournament, AAA TV

Luchando Libre says Abismo Negro will be joining CMLL as soon as July 8. I wonder if he could actually use that name (and look) – I would think he’d be stuck in a “A. B. Ismo Negr-O” situation. (And I’m not typing that again ever!)

The same post says Blue Demon Jr. will announce the first NWA Mexico show tomorrow. I can not wait.

CMLL.com says Euforia & Nosferatu beat Angel Azteca Jr. & Mascara Purpura to make it to the finals of the Arena Coliseo tag team tournament. (Off the top of my head, that’s the biggest success for Angel Azteca Jr. so far.)

The eight teams in the second block are

* Astro Boy, Molotov
* Flash, Stuka Jr.
* Neutron, Sensei
* Fabián el Gitano, Mictlán
* Bronco III, Diamante Negro
* Nitro, Skandalo
* Loco Max, Vangelis
* Pólvora, Vaquero

I’m picking Flash & Stuka Junior.

Ovaciones did upload yesterday’s newspaper after I put up the blog entry. Not a lot of new info in Arturo Rivera’s column, except for finding out Prez Roldan suffered a broken nose at TripleMania, and they’re blaming it on Konnan.

If you didn’t see it in the comments, the next announced AAA tapings are

June 29 Irapuato (#843, 07/06 MEX, 07/26 US)
July 05 Acapulco (#844, 07/13 MEX, 08/02 US)
July 13 Salamanca (#845, 07/20 MEX, 08/09 US)
July 20 Monterrey (#846, 07/27 MEX, 08/16 US)

The first day of the next NOAH tour is also 06/29, so Ricky’s probably back in Japan before any more TV. Too bad. This schedule does not seem to conflict with any ROH dates.

The totally independent Dr. Wagner can’t work shows with El Hijo del Santo, as everyone figured.

Box Y Lucha #2875 has Heavy Metal being shaved. There’s headlines on Niebla’s jump and Ricky Cruz losing his mask. The contents list Scorpio and Calo leaving AAA, and that appears to be the only AAA coverage in this magazine.

The interview with Niebla is on their website. Niebla explains he left to CMLL because he didn’t want to go backward. (That puzzled me, but I guess he means “on the card.”) Niebla apologizes to AAA if they don’t like the way he left, but he feels he was straight with them about what he wanted.

Titanes El Ring #5 has Ultimo Guerrero on the great. It was just two weeks ago I was chatting with someone about found lucha libre magazines that we didn’t know even existed, and here’s another one.

quick site notes: I was originally hoping to move over to the new blogging software tonight, but I’m not sure I’ll be ready. I’ll see how it goes later. I’ve got a plan for the next time I do live coverage, so it’s not a complete failure like Friday. Hopefully, there’ll be a chance to try it out before the anniversary show.
