In most promotions, running the triangle match now means they’re not planning on running it later. In this promotion, I have no idea.

Black Abyss is clearly the mystery partner for the 04/16 taping. I’m thinking this is the Vipers taking the Abismo Negro gimmick and giving it to a new person, and it’s a rudo move. I’d think that’d be a tecnico move in AAA.

Jack Evans vs Alebrije = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Actually, if Head Hunter stays out of the way, that could be fun.

I’d lean towards a title change, but it’s not a certainty. Maybe the TV lead up will get a better idea.

Another win for the Clowns.

Upcoming tapings
– 04/30 Aguscalientes

  1. So what will be the main event at Triplemania?

Damn, they gave away basically the top two matches on tv tapings. I have no idea where they can go from here.

Hell Brothers vs. La Secta vs.Legion in the ultimate tag match.

  2. – Clowns in the opener after beating all the top teams and challenging the Hell Brothers? It seems like Konnan is willing to move the lower card guys up to the top on not-so-loaded shows but is unwilling to move the upper card guys down a bit when the situation calls for it. Why can’t match #5 be moved down to #3? It’s a pointless match.

    – No idea what is going on with the titles. Probably doesn’t matter since they’ll be a ladder match for them at Triplemania, probably with many teams.

    – Jack vs Cuije = GOLD! Alan Stone is very out of his element in a match like this. I worry for him.

    – I wonder who Black Abyss will be and if they will just delay Abismo/Niebla to have Abismo unmasked his new nemesis.

    – Main event will probably set up the taping 3 days later with Ciber vs Zorro so I expect Mesias not to play a part in the finish. Zorro should go over here.

  3. Yout-what? You trust those guys mistranslations over me?

    Last Warrior = Ultimo Guerrero

  4. freetranslation and google all translate Ultimate Warrior to Ultimo Guerrero. If anyone has old lucha mags from when Hellwig was around, well, you’ll what Hellwig was called in Mexico.

Funny, but there’s one very early picture of UG wearing a mask with the exact same design Hellwig used around the eyes. That can’t be a coincidence. I think it’s time for us to admit something we don’t want to, one of our favorite rudos of the decade was inspired by one of the worst wrestlers ever.

  5. youtube is not a translation site. Someone put up some junk with Hellwig, and he always uses the term ultimo guerrero. Even when Hellwig was around, I remember the coverage and commentary in Spanish saying so.

I think the literal translation and the context of a wrestling gimmick are two different things.

  6. Nope, Ultimo Rebelde came out first, and Guerrero comes from Santos Laguna moniker, which is “Los Guerreros”. Mask and whatever is incidental…

  7. Look for yourself on wiki. UG is wearling Hellwigs exact face paint design. That’s more than a coincidence in wrestling.

  8. I don’t want to interrupt but Ernesto O’Campo did a Top 10 myths in Lucha Libre and one of them (if I’m not mistaken) was Ultimo Guerrero does not mean Ultimate Warrior. It’s like Ultimo Dragon. It doesn’t mean Ultimate Dragon. Even Mike Tenay used to explain that every time he worked a WCW match. His gimmick is that he was the *last* student of Bruce Lee. Hence… Ultimo Dragon = Last Dragon.

  9. In the case of Ultimo Dragon, I clearly remember his gimmick came from Ultimate Warrior and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, courtesy of Antonio Pena who gave it to him when he booked Arena Mexico.

  10. I probably won’t win this argument. Too many people ganging up on me, and more will when they wake up tomorrow and read this. I’d like to know what Cubs himself thinks.

Again, it’s just my theory. I’ll hope to have more luck getting McDonald’s to admit that they don’t sell the Shamrock Shake in NYC because they want to be PC, and know that in a city where diversity is a religion, if one group has a shake for St. Patrick’s Day, then Mickey D’s will be expected to have one for every group. So they just don’t put it on the menu here to avoid problems.

  11. Since WCW always made clear Ultimo Dragon was meant to be the final trainee of Bruce Lee, I figured the same meaning was true for UG.

  12. WCW was a joke. We all know Pena gave Asai the gimmick and where Pena got it from. Hellwig/Steamboat.

So you think it’s just a coincidence, that UG just happened to start the UG character with the same “face paint” and strings around his arm like Hellwig?

I wonder if Asai has done a shoot interview with RF yet. Would be a good question for him.

  13. Kind of reminds me of when WCW said that Big Show was Andre’s son. All promoters like to tinker with gimmicks and say what they want on tv. In the case of Dragon, they didn’t even give him the gimmick, but had their own angle for it. Does anyone really think WCW would mention Warrior and Steamboat on their tv?

  14. Just because meltzer said that Peña got the name because of Hellwig/Steamboat doesn’t make it true, as you said a few days ago, Americans can’t be that arrogant to think that everything wrestling related emanates from McMahon, can they be?

Actually, in WCW they called Asai Ultimate Dragon for a while and then Ultimo did a promo saying he’s not “Ultimate”, but “Ultimo” as in “Last student of Bruce Lee” which was the gimmick he had originally in CMLL (Bruce Lee is The Dragon, I’ll did a Meltzelesque survey around the block and no one’s ever heard about Steamboat).

  15. The name AND the face paint design on the early UG masks are just too much of a coincidence.

  16. Which doesn’t prove anything. His current mask was designed by Angel Azteca, his old one was done by Torero or someone who might have taken the Ultimate Warrior design, but your statement doesn’t support the “one of our favorite rudos of the decade was inspired by one of the worst wrestlers ever.”

UW erratic behaiviour is not know in Mexico or no one cares, why Ultimo has never said he based anything on Warrior? He does says over and over again that Dos Caras influenced him… there are tons of guys who don’t deny admire Rey Misterio Jr and act accordingly, not to mention all the cartoon characters, if UG was indeed “inspired” by Warrior, why didn’t he did a full rip off?

  17. He no-sells a lot these days… he’s more into his entrance than the actual wrestling these days… he loves to do a running clothesline and gorilla press…

Keith might be onto something here!:P

  18. Of course the early editions of the UG mask prove something. My point is simply that early in his career, UG adopted the likeness and name of Hellwig. luchawiki already shows two early masks that have the famous Hellwig face paint design, and I first noticed this on other masks back in Promo Azteca. And the name Ultimo Guerrero translates to both Last Warrior and Ultimate Warrior. I hope someone sends and e-mail to MVS asking for UG to be featured on “Diseno”. Maybe that would answer some questions.

  19. Ultimo Guerrero for 3rd version of the Ultimate Warrior? As you know, the original one died in the 80’s and Kerry Von Erich is gone.

  20. LOL. Kerry might’ve had the best physique ever in wrestling. Didn’t Gary Hart help mold Hellwig in the image of what he wanted Kerry to be? I also heard that Hellwig used the name Warrior after Kerry who was “Modern Day Warrior”?

UG might be one of the best guys to work with in CMLL. Guys really seem to put their lives in his hands at times. He seems like a great catcher.

  21. No. The name Ultimate Warrior came from Bad News Brown in Stampede Wrestling. He was billed as The Ultimate Warrior.

  22. Actually you’re right. Hellwig was Dingo Warrior first, so he got that on his own. Hellwig was a “Warrior” before WWF, just that Vince changed it to Ultimate.
