AAA #620 (Rey de Reyes)

AAA #620, taped 03/18, aired in the US 04/04

I do not remember the opener well, because I recapped it three months ago. That seems fair, because you all probably saw this show seven months ago.

This was not the Billy/Apache match to go out of your way to see.

Vipers match was a normal Vipers match.

Scott Steiner must now hate lucha libre. None of the guys were taking moves like he was expecting, and Cibernetico was remarkably awful near the end.

I do greatly appreciate Rey de Reyes making sense for the first time in years. it was an average match, but I love getting actual logic in AAA. Now, if only the two fueds they were pushing actually got to a resolution.

Next up in the “get all the old lucha libre of my Tivo” project is the May 12th show. Maybe next week.

11/16: Mexico preview, (last week’s) Neza & Naucalpan

CMLL (FRI) 11/16 Arena Mexico
1) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II vs Polvora & Vaquero
2) Metalico, Neutron, Super Nova vs Loco Max, Nitro, Virus
3) Sagrado, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Misterioso II
4) Lady Apache vs Amapola [CMLL WOMEN]
5) Rey Bucanero, Shocker, Sombra vs Black Warrior, Lizmark Jr., Toscano
6) Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Mistico vs Atlantis, Averno, Ultimo Guerrero

We’ve got five matches who don’t matter a bit and the big TITLE MATCH. Ovaciones says this is Lady Apache’s seventh defense, but only lists four of them – the same four as on the luchawiki! Eyes on your own paper! In all the massive prematch hype, they’re pretty much respectful of each other but confident of their victory.

ESTO could’ve picked a picture where it didn’t look like they were falling asleep. Just saying. Anyway, I’m rooting for Amapola so much here that I can’t separate that to objectively have a pick on this match. If you’re rooting for Dark Angel, I think you’re rooting for an Amapola title win, so Sarah might get a shot (after six months of Lady Apache challenges.)

In Other Action, the main event is a pseudo rematch of the tag team title match, as well as Averno vs Mistico. There may be something tangible breaking out from that main event: CMLL announced the year end show will be on 12/07, and we don’t have a Perro/Shocker match to head in direction. CMLL will only have two more Friday’s to set stuff up after this show, so things really have to start in motion.

The year end show being on 12/07 means we’re going to have a lot of filler weeks. Oh well.

ESTO writes about CMLL and others aiding out flood victims with food and other supplies. As part of those efforts, wrestlers will be standing in front of Arena Mexico to accept donations, and those who donate will get a free ticket. If that’s correct, Arena Mexico should have a huge house tonight.

Mr. Reyes has photos from last night’s Arena Naucalpan and the aftermath of Mini Olimpico’s mask win (yes, he did win), but I’m still looking for a name or photo of unmasked Gitanito. Haven’t see AAA TV results yet either.

CMLL (THU) 11/08 Arena Neza [The Gladiatores]
1) Dare Devil & Super Tri b Silver Black & Zakura
2) Rayo Tapatio II & Tiger Kid b Polvora & Zayco
3) Celestial, Mini Olimpico, Ultimo Dragoncito b Gitanito, Mini Halloween, Mini Mr. Aguila
4) Fabian el Gitano, Leono, Stuka Jr. b Dr. X, Loco Max, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.
5) Arkangel, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero DQ Felino, Rey Bucanero, Valiente

UG tossed his mask to Bucanero for the DQ.

IWRG (SUN) 11/11 Arena Naucalpan [the gladiatores]
1) Puma King b Latin Brother
2) Tortuguillo Ninja I & Tortuguillo Ninja II b Trauma I & Trauma II

5) Black Terry & Cerebro Negro b Fantasma de la Ópera & Freelance [ri, losers advance]
6) Fantasma de la Ópera b Freelance [hair]

Sucks to be Freelance. Radioactivo yanked Kid Tiger’s mask to pin him. Negro Navarro might have hurt his arm in the semimain

AAA (MON) 11/12 Arena Cuatro Caminos de Nuevo Laredo [RFC]
3) Charly Manson b Zorro
4) Cibernetico, La Parka Jr., Octagón b Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz

2) Difunto I & Difunto II vs Caifan Rockero I & Gato Volador [FILL TAG]
3) Estrella Dorada, Hator, Monje Negro vs Diluvio Negro I, Diluvio Negro II, Sergio Romo Jr.

This show is being taped for TV Azteca

The Gladiatores also have interviews with Damian 666 and Los Traumas (who appear to be masked?) Anyone ever listen to these?

Gran Markus (1938-2007)

The original Gran Markus, Juan “Johnny” Chavarría Galicia, passed away yesterday. (La Aficion and Siglo de Torreon report ) He’d be battling diabetes for a number of years, which had ended his career. He’d been unable to walk since July. The Aficion article lists his age as 64, the wiki has him as 69.

Gran Markus was part of the famous La Ola Blanca with Dr. Wagner and Angel Blanco, and the last living member. He’d also had success wrestling in Texas during his career, arguably a bigger star there than in Mexico.

Markus leaves no children behind – the other people using the name are unrelated to him.

AAA #650

AAA #650, taped 10/07/07, aired 11/10/07

Three matches in three hours is excruciating. This time, it’s not even recaps to fill it up, just matches going long and entrances going super long. There’s no commercials live, so maybe it was only a couple hours for them but it was still way to stretched.

After the comedy of the first couple trips outside, the reality of how dumb the stip was for the match borne out. Stips are not supposed to hurt the match, but the eight people on the ring spent the middle third of the match avoiding the stip coming into play, and the last third ignoring it to get dives in.

The extreme was the usual extreme match. The only things that stick with me are the spots that go wrong. I hope Nicho has a better thought out entrance when he’s a surprise debut again in eight months.

I’m equally as bored with dome cage matches. Zorro getting help from the rudos to get revenge on Chessman makes sense, next week’s surprise being shown does not, but that’s AAA for you. Maybe they should have flipped episode order here.
