AAA #638

taped 07/15, aired in the US on 08/18

You know, they could’ve just not shown the Animal Atomico in the US, and just shown this one week of TripleMania to catch up one week. I think everyone would’ve been fine with that. Alas.

1: Opener was GREAT. They were working like they got a bonus if they stole the show, and they would’ve deserved one. If Cassandro can go like this every time he’s in, he’s got to be in much more often. If all the Oriental/Cinthia vs Alfa/Fabi stuff is this good, then I’m going to be really annoyed they detoured back into the Hamada stuff. I want more of this.

4: I expected more of the mask match. Sometimes, CMLL over does it with the near falls near the ned of the match. This match seemed to be a rare case of going the other way – it seems like they should’ve done more, and it really seemed like an odd choice of finish – if there was some reason Super Fly won with a power move, I didn’t get it.

5: The problem with the Mexican Powers is, even when they do good stuff, they’re doing imitations of matches that were better than them. It’s clearly not as much a problem to the crowd as it is to me – they don’t get docked points for bad homages by people who never saw the originals. I think this would’ve been much helped if they just did a normal ladder match, with the belts hanging in the air. Otherwise, it’s pretty much just another Mexican Powers match, with ladders at ringside.

6: This was better than I thought it’d be. The cage did look cool, but it must’ve been heck to climb. I couldn’t believe the bumps some guys were taking from hanging on the underside of the cage, especially a guy like X-Pac who would seem just to be here to cash a check. The cage bits hid the usual problems with these matches, and there seemed to be a lot less dead brawling.

They tried to make this mean something, which is more than you’d expect for Kenzo dropping his hair again. And points for making sure it got on TV. I was surprised at what didn’t (Calo with the Stones, Lider getting stretchered out.)

I want to get in another recap this week, but we’ll see. I’m happy to be caught up.

  1. I am gonna be rewatching this soon but from my memory, I really enjoyed the opener as much as you did. The only downside to the Relevos AAA matches is that it eliminates the usual spot that the mini’s would get for a blowaway trios match. But I’ll take that any day for a match as good as this one was.

I think something was edited out of that Fly/Calo finish. I did like the top-rope power bomb spot right before the german suplex finish.

    Mexican Powers… well… yeah.

I really liked the cage match. The only problem, as Chui pointed out originally, was that guys were climbing out between the bars when I thought the point was to go through the circle in the middle. My first instinct when I saw the cage was “no way Ciber is athletic enough to do that”.:) I’m actually a big fan of AAA cage matches though.

  2. I still really think Alfa is Billy boy under a mask.

The open was awesome, The Fly/Calo match was great, great heat and emotion throughout.

Same can be said for the cage match. I agree with everyone about the way you exit a cage.
