AAA TV (SUN) 06/10 Poliforum Zamna de Merida Lineup [YucaRod]
1) Cinthia Moreno & Estrellita vs ? & ??
2) Laredo Kid & Sexi Star vs El Apache & Fabi Apache
3) Crazy Boy, Extreme Tiger, Joe Lider, Juventud Guerrera vs Espiritu, Psicosis, Scoria, Super Calo
4) Alebrije, Latin Lover, Oriental, Zorro vs Abismo Negro, Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
5) Chessman, Cibernetico, La Parka Jr. vs El Mesias, Kenzo Suzuki, Ozz

Is the main event the first time Parka’s teamed with Cibernetico during this angle? I think so. This is the first date we’ve seen Parka back for, but obviously there’s plenty of time between now and then for him to return.

Latin’s back again. If they’re actually going to do Latin/Abismo at TripleMania, you’d think they would have to start making it clear here.

Looks like Sexi Star has smartened up and stopped teaming with Billy. (It’s more Gran Apache/Air Force stuff.)

The mystery people in the opener are supposed to be Foreign Legion members.

Next Tapings
– 06/17 Toluca

  1. Latin Lover is back again.

    Heck Yeah….BITCH!!!!!!!!!

When is Triplemania by the way? At the rate they’re going “Verano de Escandalo” will be a winter event.

  2. How did Juvi get back in Mexican Powers? Parka did work Coliseo Monterrey on Sunday and it looked like an ok crowd.

La Hora de la Papa on Ch.2 Mexico City/GALA USA dedicated some time to the Mistico/Perros angle. It looked really weak. Perro was a guest on Hora again, and plays total tecnico. I just don’t get it. Then he tells people that Mistico is chicken b/c he challenges Perro to a stip match while Perro is in a cast. Why does Perro make Mistico always look like a chickenshit tecnico?

Daniel- Why are you so into Lover?

  3. Perro makes Mistico look like a chickenshit techinco because he’s Perro. Perro reminds me of Edge a lot when he made John cena look like a bitch.

Juvi never left the Mexican powers that i know of.

  4. RE:luchalibreenvivo!

Because he’s the best thing going in Mexican wrestling. He’s what a wrestler in general should be. He’s proof that you can be old school and modern at the same time, not like these other idiots like Joe Lider, Crazy Boy, and a whole list of others who just don’t get it.

  5. RE:thecubsfan He’s old school in the sense that he uses the classic formuala of going about his showmanship and matches.

Don’t get me wrong most Mexican wrestlers are old school, but a lot of guys currently in AAA are not so much old school, like the Mexican Powers and just about everybody is the Foriegn Legion.

  6. “Get it”? Sometimes, I think I “Get it”. For example, I think “I see” Mexican Powers for what they are. And based on the reaction of the crowds, they’re not over when they do the hardcore stuff. Then I talk to the Mexican kids who work across the street about what they saw on Galavision, and they tell me “Mexican Powers” with a smile on their faces. If you sell tickets and merch, then you “get it” no matter what people say.

Here’s another example of “getting it”. I was bitching and moaning all day about the Negro Casas vignettes of FSE. They seem boring, they don’t serve a purpose at the box office, and totally humanize him. Also, the time should be used to update viewers on what is happening at Arena Mexico since we can no longer get CMLL’s main TV in the US. Then an hispanic person told me that I don’t “get it”, and that just because I’m an American, I think I know what works best. The person told me that the Mexican audience probably likes to see their luchadors presented the way FSE does every week.

Someone once told me “Latin Lover is not a draw. He gets the big pop from the women who are coming anyway, but he does not sell the tickets”. I’ll say this. If AAA starts doing PPV’s in Mexico again like they did years ago, Lover is the last guy you should put in the main event because of all the top names, he would sell the least in a big stip match. Joe Lider(who is a danger to himself and those around him) vs. Psicosis in a hair vs. mask would do better than Lover vs. Abismo in a stip because the PPV demo does not want to see Lover.

  7. While there is a huge differece between “getting a pop” and actually “being over”, I think you are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out to lunch by saying Lider/Psic would draw more than Lover/Abismo.

Latin Lover has drawing power in Mexico. On U.S. PPV? Who knows. Who cares either b/c it’ll never happen.

Next time you run into those kids across the street, ask them to name the Mexican Powers or at least 2 of them.

  8. Latin Lover is the biggest draw in Mexico, there’s no doubt about it, but part of it is that he doesn’t work every week. A couple of months ago, Orizaba was packed turning guys at the door and 2 weeks later, CMLL put a show there with Mistico and they got less than 40% of the Plaza– an yeah, the women paid the tickets to go and watch Latin.

Same thing happens everywhere, in Merida Perro vs Mistico would get a 75%-80% crowd (around 8000) and when Latin Lover went over there, WON reported 15,000, I don’t know if it is possible to have twice the guys over there, but the pics showed the place incredibly overflown. A couple of weeks AAA will be there, lately, that place is drawing 1,200, so we’ll see how much Latin Lover draws.

Latin vs Abismo in a stip match would have a shot at selling out Plaza Mexico, too bad Abismo’s popularity sunk after leaving Vida TV, but it is still possible with a strong undercard. However, I think AAA will choose to run Toreo but with WWE like prices.

  9. If RoH, Pint-Sized Brawlers, and WEW can get on PPV, I’d imagine it’s just a matter of time before Lucha Libre gets on PPV. Lover actually headlined a Lucha PPV in the US against Pirata, and it bombed. But I also predicted a full-fledged AAA tour would hit the US and I was wrong. So Robert is probably right again. No Lucha PPV for US market.

If Merida does a sellout, it has nothing to do with Lover. Because right now, the biggest draw in Mexico is still “Evento Grabado Para La Television” or “TV Taping” And if no one believes me, look at the crowds for AAA every week. TV Taping has been the biggest draw in AAA for many years now. Lover has done several Coliseo matches in MTY, and photos on their website show what a bomb Lover was in his first show back. Place was more than 1/2 empty and this can be verified by going to arenacoliseo.com

Yes, Joe Lider vs. Psicosis would do better than Lover and Abismo right now. There is heat there, and Los Mexican Powers are a little bit of a draw and have recognition. Lover is a legend, but not a draw. He’s more like Mil Mascaras where everyone knows the name, but it does not sell tickets. Based on crowd shots, I’d say Elegido is a bigger draw than Lover right now. I say that b/c kids really like to buy his mask, and it seems like every female in the crowd is standing and taking Elegido’s picture the entire time he’s out there.

Who said Lover did a huge crowd in Orizaba? Are photos available? And who else was on the show? We hear so much about what he draws, but never hear about the times he bombs, like he did in his own hometown in his first match back.

I will ask the Mexican kid “who are The Mexican Powers”? but I know he knows who they are. Oddly, most Mexicans in NY who are Lucha fans know that Perro Jr. is hurt even though CMLL is off Galavision.

  10. Morelia was “Evento Grabado Para La Television” and was not a sell out, there had been another 3 or 4 recent tv tapings that had not been sellouts, like in Tlaxcalita… Most of that has to do with Parka-ris being injured, but it shows that a “Evento Grabado Para La Television” is not the one producing the sellouts.

Monterrey is weird, since there they’ll rather see Poncho de Nigris, Pato and Konnan than anyone else, considering Mistico just did 2000 last December, and Santo, Mil Mascaras, Park et all were below 4000 in a 12000 venue. So no one draws in Mty.

It’s pretty dumb to do a PPV with Latin Lover since he gets lots of TV exposure for free.

The Orizaba show was a AAA tv Taping, but previously, they had done 12000 over there without Latin, then it turned into 20,000 (counting the turn away at the door), so how can you say he sells no tickets? Sure if you ask any guy he’ll say he won’t be buying a ticket to go see him, but women are the ones that take the families to the arenas.

  11. Cubs posted some photos from Morelia and it looked pretty packed to me. Even so, the gate had to be bigger than if it was not a “TV Taping”, which is a huge draw, like RAW is for WWE.

As far as other AAA tapings not selling out, they still do huge crowds, and look at how small some of those towns are. Some I can barely find on a map, if they’re even on a map. The crowds are much bigger because it’s for TV.

Lover did not draw in MTY because he is not a draw period. Plenty of Coli shows drew like Konan Big vs. Carola on a Tuesday. But the fact that Lover’s return at Coli against Chessman and Mesias totally bombed says something about his star power. That’s a small venue with just 10 rows in the balcony, and 1,400 ringside seats.

I have pictures from Orizaba in the Lucha mags. I saw quite a few empty seats, and don’t tell me “production cuts” like WWE does for RAW. Too many exaggeragted gates from Mexico if you ask me.

  12. RE: luchalibreenvivo!

“Joe Lider(who is a danger to himself and those around him)”

Thats funny but it’s also true.

I still ask myself one question about Joe Lider, where did Juvi find this guy and why did he put him in the Mexican Powers?

  13. LUCHALIBREENVIVO You are totally out to lunch. You’re basing Latin Lover’s drawing power based on Indy shows. Indy shows in genreral have small turn outs.

Just admit you don’t like Latin Lover and stop trying to convince us that he’s not a star, because that’s just non-sense.

It also sounds like you’re basing ticked sales on photos. Sorry not good enough.

Also, the fact that a few Mexican kids smile when they say “Mexican Powers” does not mean those guys are what everybody wants to see.

  14. “Joe Lider(who is a danger to himself and those around him)”

Haha – seriously, has there ever been a luchador/wrestle in history so unanimously hated on the web as Joe Lider? (well, the english speaking part of it anyway)

I’ve never came across anyone who could even try to put up a defence for him, he’s THAT bad. When somebody’s being shat on to that extent, you’d normally expect at least one of two folk to argue and claim it’s exaggerated and he’s ‘not that bad’. But not with our Joe :D

He’s so bad, he doesn’t even attract the usually inevitable cult following which wrestlers who are ‘so bad they’re good’ get – he’s even way below that level! :D

I’m gonna start cheering him on! :-p

  15. Lider worked locally in Guadalajara and the odd hardcore Monterrey shows before the Mexican Powers were started. Juventud needed a Psicosis and a Super Crazy. So he got his Psicosis and settled for Super Crazy’s cousin. Unfortunately Super Crazy’s cousin has a best friend (or more if you get my drift…) who also had to be brought in to make it a group of 4. If Crazzy Boy wasn’t related to Super Crazy, Lider and he would still be working in front of 50 fans at Arena Jalisco.

I’m usually a fan of Keith’s posts as he makes good points but once again… you’re totally out to lunch on the Latin Lover deal. As for that Dallas show, I’m thinking the buyrate was so low b/c WHO KNEW ABOUT IT? It’s 4 years later and I don’t even have results. I could check my tape but the fact nobody reported results shows nobody knew about the show. None of the magazines covered it either and you’d think they’d be the first to know.

  16. RE: Henrik HA HA HA I love it, you’re so right. Even the name “Joe Lider” is stupid. How the hell did he come up with that? It’s not his real name which means that off all the names he could have come up with he picked that.

  17. I didn’t go shopping today to ask the Mexican kids if they know who makes up “Mexican Powers”, but the kid at the Pizza shop explained to me that Juvi was a big star in the US, and the kid also watched the ladder match on Sunday. They seem to have a following.

I know you guys might think I’m trying to stir things up a bit by bashing Lover as a potential PPV draw. Meltzer recently wrote about John Cena’s amazing ability to push merch and house show tickets, but not PPV’s. Meltzer speculated it’s because Cena does not appeal to the PPV buying demos. I believe that Lover would be the same on PPV-that he would not be one of the best choices for the main because the demo that buys PPV would not support him.

But Robert is right about the old LLL PPV. It was poorly promoted. In fact, I believe it was taped in Houston at Hofheinz Pavillion, and the Telemundo special was taped in Dallas. I remember that time period well because I was so convinced AAA was going to establish themselves in the US, and never go away. I was wrong.

Joe Lider got alot of publicity from the Ernesto Ocampo mags too. Every time he comes out to wrestle, I’m genuinely afraid I’m going to see something happen to him or someone he’s working with. I get nervous.

  18. RE:luchalibreenvivo! I still don’t see how you figure Latin Lover would not be a a good choice for ppv. If people will pay money to see him at arenas and go nuts for him, they will pay money to see him on ppv.

John Cena gets bood out of just about every building he goes to so it’s no surprise that people won’t pay money to see him. His merchendise on the other hadn is pretty cool. That’s the difference between him and Latin Lover.
