03/30 Rey de Reyes Preview

I mentioned this in the comments of the Dos Leyenda lineup, but I’ll say it up here so everyone can read: Rey de Reyes is inarguably a better card. It’s not a talent gap, and I still believe CMLL has much better potential on it’s hands. (They haven’t been delivering on it, but that’s another post.) It’s almost all an effort gap. AAA cares much more about putting on a big event shows, and it shows. They’ve been building a number of angles for months, and they’ll actually be finishing them off. That should be the standard.

Match by match…

1) Mascarita Divina, Mascarita Sagrada, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Charly Manson, Mini Chessman

Before Sagrada was hurt, it looked like they were setting up another Abismo/Mascarita title match, so they may just resume that direction here. I’d be fine with that. Obviously, you got six good->awesome minis here, so this could be a great match.

2) Crazy Boy & Joe Lider vs Cuervo & Ozz and Pegasso & Super Fly and Alan Stone & Zumbido [AAA TAG]

THE TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT. Seriously, I want someone to promise me that these things will be defending frequently and mean something for the foreseeable future, after the months of incoherent tournament matches it took to get here. If there’s any less than 3 title matches on TV the rest of the year, I will be complaining. They had plenty of time to devote to tag matches before the titles have been decided, so they ought to have some of that time after.

This all depends on what they’re planning to do next. (That’s another thing with AAA – they seem to be planning for the future much better.) If the Dark Family is going to end up as lead rudos on a weekly basis, with just random foreign legion cameos, they ought to get the titles to keep them strong. If Nicho, Kenzo, and Ricky are going to take over that top spot and Cuervo, Ozz, Scoria and Espiritu are headed to the midcard, then maybe it’s not so important.

I’d believe that these titles were created with the idea of Crazy and Lider holding them. They’re still Atomicos champs, so maybe they won’t get them yet. (OTOH, I can already see the magazine covers with them having two sets of belts.) If I got to pick, I’d probably pick with Alan Stone & Zumbido; you’ve got rudos as champs, so the first title matches can be about the tecnicos overcoming them (since the titles themselves won’t mean much), the Guapos don’t have much else to do right now and Alan & Zumbido should be a really fun team. I think there’s a lot more value in various combinations of the Air Force chasing the Guapos for the belts, rather them getting it right off the bat and barely surviving title defenses.

3) Billy Boy vs Gran Apache [hair]

Billy Boy should be getting his win back, but this is more about how the drama with Fabi and Marvin and Sexi Star and all that plays out. Not sure exactly where we’re heading here, because it’s all based on skits I haven’t seen, but they seem to be hinting a double turn.

4) Alberije, Super Porky, Zorro vs Antifaz del Norte, Histeria, Mr. Niebla

This is the one match on for no reason except to get some guys on. Vipers win to stay strong. There’s always rumors about Zorro turning, but I don’t think it’s happening

5) Abismo Negro vs Latin Lover, La Parka Jr., Rhyno, Octagón, Fuerza Guerrera [Rey de Reyes]

No Reyes de Reyes match has made sense since – 2005? I think that one worked right, but they’ve been doing trios with sometimes eliminations and sometimes captains and sometimes La Parka Jr. is just declared winner. I presume this will be the same thing. We’ve got an easy 3vs – Fuerza/Abismo/Rhyno vs Octagon/Latin/La Parka Jr – because they’ve got three rivalries (Parka’s the defender of AAA versus the TNA/Legion guy.)

I’m going to guess Abismo wins it this time.

6) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs ?, Kenzo Suzuki, Scott Steiner

Ricky Banderas is the mystery guy, unless they get worried about people figuring it out, stick someone random in there, and have Ricky run in later.

They really should keep interaction between Cibernetico (seemingly fragile) and Scott Steiner (seemingly uncaring about opponents) away from each other as much as humanly possible. In ring, Scott Steiner in AAA is a dangerous idea – he’s not much as a wrestler any more, he’s not particular careful with his opponents, and he’s not feeling too good himself. I hope he’s somehow a draw.

Hell Brothers are due a win back, but I think they’ll only get it by DQ if at all. Run ins galore.

  1. Cubs previewing an AAA show in-depth?!?!?! What is the world coming to?

Mini’s opener should be really fun as usual. You gotta open big shows with something that gets the crowd off their feet… either mini’s or flyers. AAA is always… well… 95% of the time… great at booking openers. I doubt this will be the only time we see the mini’s on the night.

Tag tournament… I’m assuming they’ll do like Guerra De Titanes ’05 and split it into 2 semi-finals and a final. In that case it’ll be Super Fly/Pegasso vs Cuervo/Ozz and the Mexican Power vs Los Guapos. I’m sticking to my prediction of this tournament being booked just for Crazzy Boy/Joe Lider to win over the Secta Diabolica. Then they will defend the titles against all the “foreign army” guys that get brought in.

Billy Boy *HAS* to beat Apache. I’m assuming this will be the match of the night and it could be a match of the year candidate if they don’t overbook it. Hopefully Konnan stays out of this and just focuses on the main event so these guys can do their thing, then Fabi/Sexy Star can get involved and we can get Apache losing his hair. I’d like to see Fabi turn on her dad to cost him the match and then star teaming with Sexy Star.

Fourth match is the usual “calm down match” which every big show should have. Just gonna be there to entertain the portion of the crowd that isn’t taking a bathroom break and I expect the tecnicos to go over clean.

Latin Lover seems to be on quite the ego run lately so I can see him making sure he wins the Rey De Reyes. I’d say he goes over Rhyno clean, assuming Rhyno stays in the match.

Main event is NOT happening as planned. I guarantee it right now. That’s why I say Rhyno may not even be in the Rey De Reyes match if he gets moved up into the main event slot. If he does in fact show up, keeping Scott Steiner away from Cibernetico will definitely be the key. Ciber doesn’t know how to bump and the only thing Scott can do is throw guys around. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. The mystery guy had better end up being someone who can take bumps and catch or this may be one of the worst matches ever.

This is where Konnan needs to think back to covering up the awful ’96 AAA main events. He just needs to have the mini’s and flyers run out to do a ton of spots and distract from the fact the actual guys in the match are doing nothing. Bet on this scenario happening.

  2. 1) Mascarita Divina, Mascarita Sagrada, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Charly Manson, Mini Chessman

AWESOME! I love AAA mini’s so this match will be awesome. I’m so glad to see Mascarita Sagrada back so soon. He’s amazing and I can’t wait to see him back in action.

    2) Crazy Boy & Joe Lider vs Cuervo & Ozz and Pegasso & Super Fly and Alan Stone & Zumbido [AAA TAG]

I’m hoping that Pegasso & Super Fly win. They are so good. I like all of the teams but I want to see them win or La Secta. I seriously don’t like Joe Lider, he’s reckless and is going to seriously injure someone…if he hasn’t already.

    3) Billy Boy vs Gran Apache [hair]

YES!!! This is my favorite feud in all of lucha libre and wrestling in general. I want to see Gran Apache bald. I’m sure it will be bloody and awesome. The match I’m looking forward to most. Thank you AAA.

    4) Alberije, Super Porky, Zorro vs Antifaz del Norte, Histeria, Mr. Niebla

Should be a good match. Niebla/Alberije should be hilarious as always. I like Zorro and Histeria the most so they should make it good.

    5) Abismo Negro vs Latin Lover, La Parka Jr., Rhyno, Octagón, Fuerza Guerrera [Rey de Reyes]

Huge fan of Abismo Negro and hope he wins it. Not sure how a Rey de Reyes match works so I’ll be suprised to see how it works. I don’t like Rhyno so I hope he loses and doesn’t come back to AAA. Octagon/Fuerza should be awesome. Same with Abismo/Lover. Not sure about La Parka/Rhyno? I like La Parka but no Rhyno please.

    6) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs ?, Kenzo Suzuki, Scott Steiner

HB are my favorites but I HATE Scott Steiner. He’s seriously one of my least favorites of all-time. I’ve never seen a match of his I like. He ruins matches. Probably will ruin this too. Let’s pray for a NO SHOW. I like Kenzo, he’s fine. Hopefully the suprise is somebody NOT from TNA. I could handle Psicosis as the suprise, but please no Headhunters. Black Buffalo would be a letdown but he’s better than anyone in TNA and Headhunters. It’s hard for me to say but this is one HB match I’m not looking forward to.

Overall, great show. I am excited for almost all of the matches. Some losers in there like Steiner & Rhyno, I wish they’d miss their flight. I’d take Laredo Kid & Scoria in their places and be 100% happy. Even El Angel or Elegido. Anyways, with a couple changes this card could be awesome. It’s close but still good.

  3. Not to change subject from AAA, but once again, FSE took that random cut from tonights CMLL show, cutting the first two falls off the Corelone-Koslov-Caras Jr. vs. Damian-Halloween-Aguila match… I’m kind of new to the world of lucha and was wondering how everyone receives thier shows and on what services/channels? Does anyone broker satellite service from Mexico and if so, what servie do you use/recommend? All I have now are access to Galavision US, Fox Sports Spanish, and TeleLatino (in the not too distant future)… Just wondering what else could be out there… Thanks… :)

  4. Not to change subject as well but is there any chance I could work out a trade with you for your CMLL Guadalajara tapes, Scott?:)
