GdR #65

From 02/17. I thought the opener was the best segunda I can remember them showing. Main event was Dr. Wagner being Dr. Wagner, as opposed to Dr. Wagner and Ultimo Guerrero actually having a match, but you knew that once they had Lizmark and Eclipse of all people doing the opening mat session. Since we hadn’t gotten Wagner in 4 months, this was fine, though it would drive me nuts if we saw it every week.

I look forward to the only other people who watch this show seeing things 180 degrees from me.

Next week looks to be
02/09: Lady Apache, Luna Magica, Marcela vs Amapola, Medusa, Princesa Sugieth – is there still an Amapola/Apache feud if Amapola is losing all the time?
02/18: Blue Panther, La Mascara, Mictlan vs Alex Koslov, Ephesto, Misterioso II

If there’s a news update, it won’t be late – forget to tape the early Accion.

Mistico to tryout with WWE (Maybe? Maybe Not?)

I missed this yesterday, but happened to see it this morning:

Mistico will be getting a WWE tryout during the California swing over the next two weeks. I’m not sure of the date or dates but it is happening soon, and with TV in Bakersfield and San Diego, it could be this week.

Dave Meltzer

Let’s take a moment to note Super Luchas had this right (though we’re still waiting for 3 more – maybe the tryout will be tag matches!) and Ovaciones had this wrong. I wonder if CMLL lied, or just didn’t know.

WWE in Cali dates:
02/19 – Bakersfield, CA
02/20 – San Diego (with a scheduled Rey Misterio appearance – talk about your photo ops)
02/26 – Fresno, CA
02/27 – San Jose, CA

Mistico’s booked on 02/19 in Pubela (teaming with La Mascara and Volador Jr. vs Averno, Efesto, Mephisto), so maybe it’ll be next week? Puebla’s gotten too many noshows lately that they may not want to do a big one, but I don’t really know.

There’s a very slight chance this could make TV, but WWE typically runs a dark match before it starts it’s B-Show tapings, and the tryouts always happen in that dark match.

I don’t know. We were discussing this same thing one year ago this time, and nothing came of it. (And until Mistico is in a WWE ring, I’m always going to have trouble believing it.) I presume Mistico’s role to be cruiserweight babyface. If he was an instant hit and things got sorted out quick, he could even debut on WrestleMania winning that belt, but that may be pushing it and perhaps one step beyond best case scenario.

There’s a lot of questions about how Mistico would adapt to WWE style and WWE rings (and, by the size of Super Crazy lately, WWE free lunch buffets!) Will they have him keep his mask? They’ve had success with Rey masked, but haven’t succeeded with anyone else. (Ultimo Dragon failed because they didn’t were expecting him to be a Rey clone; Mistico would be better at that.) Without knowing who in the company wants to bring him in and why, it’s tough to correctly guess how he’ll be used. We also don’t know who actually owns the gimmick or what Mistico’s contract status is.

If you’re the conspiracy type, you may note how the Reyes de Aire happened a lot sooner than usual – as if CMLL knew they might be losing one it’s top small tecnico highflier and decided they needed to get serious about creating another one ASAP. If a card juggles so Averno & Mephisto are in position to pick up the tag team titles, then we know for sure.

My feeling is Mistico has worked very hard and very often for the last 3 years, and as a guy who came to CMLL with no name value and no leverage, he probably isn’t getting paid as much as he might deserve. Everyone who’s good at what they do deserves a chance to extract as much as they can out of it; even if he doesn’t sign with WWE, just the possiblity that he could’ve is going to help him. And if he ends up with a contract that has him working 3-4 times a week, rather than 3-4 times on some days, that’s going to be pretty good for him. I have reservations about how well this is going to work, but Mistico’s deserving of the chance.

Update:

I’m not sure regarding the status of Mistico coming to a WWE TV taping over the next two weeks. Seems CMLL is extremely unhappy about this and is putting the pressure heavy on Mistico not to come.

Meltzer, today.

Swear to god, when this story comes up again (and it surely will), it’s getting one sentence and no more until Mistico’s actually in a WWE ring.

02/17: Mexico results, DF lineups, GdR

ESTO

CMLL (FRI) 02/16 Arena Mexico Results [ovaciones, notimex, ESTO]
1) Mini Violencia, Pierrothito b Mini Fantasy, Shockercito

Elimination order: Sombra de Plata, Super Nova, Valiente (ESTO said he was among the best tonight), Metro, Leono, Misterioso II, Stuka Jr., Virus, Felino, Alex Koslov, Sagrado, Averno, Mephisto, and La Mascara.

Final was Volador vs Sangre, with a Spanish Fly (still in desperate need of a Volador specific name) to win. If Volador ain’t picking up the CMLL Welterweight Title, perhaps he’ll go after the Mexican one. Felino/Alex got the required double pin, and Sagrado got the required injury (ESTO says he hurt his legs going thru the ropes?) Notimex has a triumphant Volador interview.

Perros won clean in the main event, with Tarzan ending up hurt. Both sides relatively respectful after their outcome.

Next week’s card are up:

The official story is that we don’t know if Corelone and Koslov are tecnicos or rudos any more. I’m thinking Universo always would like to be a rudo and adjustments are being made, but we’ll see how it develops this week.

CMLL (THU) 02/15 Arena Puebla Results [Intolerancia via box y lucha]

02/16 previews

It looks like my Posting To The Future broke, so perhaps this won’t turn up until after these shows happen. Just in case I’m lucky/observant…

CMLL:

CMLL (FRI) 02/16 Arena Mexico
1) Mini Fantasy & Shockercito vs Mini Violencia & Pierrothito
2) Blue Panther, Lizmark Jr., Negro Casas vs Eclipse, Mascara Ano 2000, Universo 2000
3) La Mascara vs Sagrado, Sombra de Plata, Volador Jr., Metro II, Leono, Super Nova, Virus, Mephisto, Alex Koslov, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca, Felino, Stuka Jr., Valiente, Averno [ciber, reyes de aire]
4) Atlantis, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero vs Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila, Perro Aguayo Jr. [CMLL TRIOS]

They’re going to change the trios titles, that’s for sure. Perros can’t lose three times, and this is the three top guys in the group; they run out of excuses after this match.

My guess is Volador wins the cibernetico, and this is the start of another four week push for him. La Mascara, Sagrado, Averno, Sangre, and Misterioso have the best chance of the rest.

AAA:

AAA TV (FRI) 02/16 Plaza de Toros de Uruapan, Michoacan
1) La Hechicera, Linda Star, Martha Villalobos vs La Diabolica, Lola Gonzalez, Vicky Carranza
2) Pegasso & Super Fly vs Alebrije & El Brazo and Crazy Boy & Joe Lider and Espiritu & Scoria [AAA TAG]
3) Brazo de Plata Jr., Juventud Guerrera, Tinieblas Jr. vs Sangre Chicana, Fuerza Guerrera, Pirata Morgan
4) Intocable, La Parka Jr., Octagon, Super Porky vs Alan Stone, Hator, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
5) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs ?, ??, ???

I don’t suspect a lot of news here; they’re close enough to Rey de Reyes that they may start teasing matches they don’t actually deliver, but otherwise not much. Even though only one Mexican Power is in there this week, we should be heading to an Atonicos Title match – I can’t see them actually doing Fuerza/Juvi with stips. (And look how fast they’ve got sidetracked from Octagon/Fuerza.)

Nicho will be in the main event, but no surprises – maybe Head Hunter I and Ozz? A third of the roster is working a spot shot elsewhere.

Tijuana

Isn’t there a 12 man mask match tonight? Where Inferno is probably going to lose? I remember reading about it, but never seeing a full lineup.

02/16: Mexico, Guadalajara, Tijuana

cmll

El Dandy tells Ovaciones that he never signed signed with AAA. He was talking to them, but they put him on lineups before he agreed to a deal and they never could agree to a deal. Theortically, he showed up in IWRG yesterday.

Have you heard? Halloween wants to put on a big show for his 20th anniversary in wrestling. (ESTO) Congratulations to Halloween for getting three days of press out of this. This article adds that Damian and Halloween want a tag team title shot.

Esto also runs the injury story. Add Marcela to list, with a broken nose. I think there’s a 80% chance Hiroka kicked her in the face. By the way, Flash got hurt in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara on Sunday, which is odd since he wasn’t on the lineup.

ESTO talks about Reyes de Air and the non-main event portion of the card, and one on the past trios title matches between the Guerreros and the Perros. Ovaciones and Notimex have words from Atlantis and Aguila. La Union de Morelos trumps them, getting words from Perro and Ultimo, since they were in town for a show on Thursday. (Rey retained the LH Title over Ultimo, I presume.)

No one anywhere says a word about Marco Corelone. Ovaciones can even find time to slip in the AAA lineup.

CMLL (SUN) 02/18 Arena Coliseo Guadajalara Lineup

6) Volador vs Mephisto [CMLL WELTER]

CMLL (TUE) 02/20 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara Lineup
1) Neon vs Valentin Mayo
2) Exterminador vs Mr. Trueno
3) Nube Roja vs Ifierno
4) Leon Blanco vs Toxico
5) Lider vs Destroyer
6) Maximo, El Gallo vs Magnum, Mr. Power

Titanes del Ring is running a benefit show, collecting food for people caught up in storms in La Paz.

Zocalo has a bio on with King Balam, who may be Super Parka’s brother if I’m reading this right

I was going to post some photos from the Chela Salazar show last weekend, but the photos on my phone – well, I’m looking for any good recommendations about digital camera you’ve got, that’s how the photos on my phone went. This also leaves me without a segue to point out that if you’re looking for more about lucha women wrestlers, Lucha Women @ Blogspot appears to be it.

03/03 AAA TV lineup

previously: 02/07, 02/09, 02/16 (preview)

AAA TV (SAT) 03/03 Plaza de Toros La Concordia Lineup [jaanrovi @ box y lucha foro]
1) Billy Boy, ?, Mascarita Sagrada vs Apache, Fabi Apache, Mini Charly Manson
2) Super Fly & Pegasso vs Alan Stone & Zumbido [AAA TAG, torneo]
3) Scoria & Espiritu vs Alan & Decnis [AAA Tag, torneo]
4) Juventud Guerrera, Joe Lider, Crazy Boy vs Pirata Morgan, Sangre Chicana, Fuerza Guerrera
5) La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, Laredo Kid, Alebrije vs Abismo Negro, Mr. Niebla, Histeria, Antifaz
6) Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson vs ?, ??, ???

Again, they’re pushing the main event rudos as “Foreign Legion”; you must be feeling pretty good if you don’t name half the main event. The next TNA PPV is the following weekend, so they could be part of the mix here, and at Rey de Reyes.

This is Latin Lover’s first AAA TV match since the four way cage match in 2005, I believe. If the match with Konnan Big aired in Monterrey, that would’ve been his only television wrestling of ’06 (and now someone will remind of something minor I forget.)

Robert figured out the AAA Tag matches so I don’t have to. If you believe AAA’s just winging their way thru this and have no idea what they’re doing, they ought to get caught repeating a match real soon.

Fabi and Billy are on opposite sides of the opening trios because, I think, Fabi decided Billy went too far in the recent chain match, and that combined with their stress over Marvin being kidnapped might have finally broken them up. They’ve been doing bits where they haven’t gotten along for a while, so I guess they’ve been heading this direction. Still, something more needs to happen on TV to make this work.

I’m thinking that’s a typo and it’s Mascarita Divina in the opener. Mini Charly is working the other side, after all. Either that, or they’ve put Divina under the mask. No clue who the mystery women will be. In my evil heart of hearts, I’m hoping it’s Lady Apache – that’d be awesome in many ways.

I think there’s another TV taping in between the ones we already know

02/09 taping airs 02/18
02/16 taping airs 02/25
????? taping airs 03/04
03/03 taping airs 03/11
03/16 taping airs 03/18 (Rey de Reyes – or maybe this week is a recap week?)

They’d have to do a one day turnaround and go 15 days with a taping; that’s not likely nor worth the trouble. Maybe you already figured it out, but I thought I’d point it out
