02/16 previews

It looks like my Posting To The Future broke, so perhaps this won’t turn up until after these shows happen. Just in case I’m lucky/observant…

CMLL:

CMLL (FRI) 02/16 Arena Mexico
1) Mini Fantasy & Shockercito vs Mini Violencia & Pierrothito
2) Blue Panther, Lizmark Jr., Negro Casas vs Eclipse, Mascara Ano 2000, Universo 2000
3) La Mascara vs Sagrado, Sombra de Plata, Volador Jr., Metro II, Leono, Super Nova, Virus, Mephisto, Alex Koslov, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca, Felino, Stuka Jr., Valiente, Averno [ciber, reyes de aire]
4) Atlantis, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero vs Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila, Perro Aguayo Jr. [CMLL TRIOS]

They’re going to change the trios titles, that’s for sure. Perros can’t lose three times, and this is the three top guys in the group; they run out of excuses after this match.

My guess is Volador wins the cibernetico, and this is the start of another four week push for him. La Mascara, Sagrado, Averno, Sangre, and Misterioso have the best chance of the rest.

AAA:

AAA TV (FRI) 02/16 Plaza de Toros de Uruapan, Michoacan
1) La Hechicera, Linda Star, Martha Villalobos vs La Diabolica, Lola Gonzalez, Vicky Carranza
2) Pegasso & Super Fly vs Alebrije & El Brazo and Crazy Boy & Joe Lider and Espiritu & Scoria [AAA TAG]
3) Brazo de Plata Jr., Juventud Guerrera, Tinieblas Jr. vs Sangre Chicana, Fuerza Guerrera, Pirata Morgan
4) Intocable, La Parka Jr., Octagon, Super Porky vs Alan Stone, Hator, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
5) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs ?, ??, ???

I don’t suspect a lot of news here; they’re close enough to Rey de Reyes that they may start teasing matches they don’t actually deliver, but otherwise not much. Even though only one Mexican Power is in there this week, we should be heading to an Atonicos Title match – I can’t see them actually doing Fuerza/Juvi with stips. (And look how fast they’ve got sidetracked from Octagon/Fuerza.)

Nicho will be in the main event, but no surprises – maybe Head Hunter I and Ozz? A third of the roster is working a spot shot elsewhere.

Tijuana

Isn’t there a 12 man mask match tonight? Where Inferno is probably going to lose? I remember reading about it, but never seeing a full lineup.

  1. If a tecnico wins, I’m with you that it’ll be Volador Jr. even though he already won this match before. However I’m sticking with a rudo and picking Averno. I’d pick Sangre Azteca but he just won a title so he doesn’t need a win. Could be Alex Koslov too… he’d be my darkhorse.

I’m interested to see who goes out first. I assumed Valiente but then I noticed SOMBRA DE PLATA is in the match. How do you go from opening match Coliseo guy to semi-main eventing Arena Mexico just like that? My guess is he’s gone within the first 4 minutes of the Torneo portion.

Guys who definitely have no chance of winning: Sombra De Plata, Metro II, Leono, Super Nova, Felino, Stuka Jr. and Valiente.

I dunno about a trios titles change. All indications seem to be pointing that way but I could see some trimming of the fat as someone gets the hook from Los Perros after costing them the belts. Maybe Aguila screws up and gets dumped to form a regular trio with Damian and Halloween that isn’t Perros affiliated? I can’t see them doing the Perrito/Garza split already but who knows with this promotion.

    As for AAA…

Like you said, if nobody is keeping track of the brackets, it’s about time they put themselves in a position where they have to repeat a match. Another thing to watch is they’ve kept the matches pretty much tecnicos vs rudos so far. So we’ve yet to see something like Pegasso/Super Fly vs Alebrije/Brazo or Crazzy/Lider vs Juventud/Psic or Cuervo/Ozz vs Escoria/Espiritu. You’d think those matches would be coming up soon as the tecnico/rudo combinations are running out, especially for teams that have wrestled a lot ala Pegasso/Super Fly who pretty much have only tecnicos left to face. Meanwhile Elegido/Intocable have 15 or 16 matches left…

  2. I reckon (ie i hope) Sagrado’s going to win. He’s been elevated to Arena Mex tercera/Sunday semi/Tues main level over recent months, and this would be the ideal way to cement his arrival on the upper midcard scene. I know he won a mini torneo a few months ago at Coliseo but that was nothing.

If they do go with a rudo, then Sangre winning would be great. I still don’t think they will go down that route due to the nature of the torneo, but then again last year i didn’t the reyes del aire would be won by a non-flyer, and we all know what shithead ended up winning that – so who knows…

To be honest though, i’m not all that bothered who wins it – i’m more worried about it living up to expectations, getting plenty of time, and airing in full!

Surely with a 4 match card, it won’t be the usual 20 minute rushjob that most cibernetico’s are nowadays. With 16 participants like the old Leyenda De platas, i’ll be expecting at least 35 minutes!

Ideally we wouldn’t be seeing any eliminations until the 15 minute mark onwards with everyone getting at least 2 good exchanges of decent length and a dive, but as Robert says, Valiente and Sombra won’t even last 6 or 7 minutes – which would work out at about 30 seconds of basic generic matwork with the rest of the time standing at ringside :(

  3. I’ve been away for a while but read some of the archives. Since when has Latin Lover come back to AAA?

  4. First off, thank you for all of the help this site has given me and thecubsfan for answering my questions.

I am going to plan to take a 7-10 day vacation next year to Mexico. I am not not going to get too ahead of myself but I was wondering if anyone who reads this has been to Mexico before? More specifically, Arena Mexico and other lucha libre venues. I’m going to try and catch as many shows as possible in that timeframe while also checking out historic sights. I’d just like to get an idea of how easy (or hard) it is to get around in Mexico. Like how much are the shows to get into? How much are masks, etc outside the arenas? Are there stores that sell lucha libre merchandise near? Thank you for any help and keep up the amazing coverage of the lucha libre scene.

P.S. Have any of you guys (or ladies) heard of any lucha trips? I read something about one on a message board a few months back and was wondering if anyone had any information on these. I might just be imagining things but it would really help if I knew, or could talk to someone who had been there before. Thanks again and sorry for asking so many questions.

  5. Cubs wins again! I like how the order of elimination is pretty much exactly the card placement/potential of each guy. Valiente was 3rd out! I guess that means we can expect a push for him before Super Nova.

*Naturally*, Sagrado got hurt and was stretchered. He’ll never be a star that way.

And of course we had to have a draw… Felino and Koslov drew that honor b/c no Torneo Cibernetico ever ends without a draw somewhere in the middle.

So does Volador Jr. take the CMLL Welterweight Title on Sunday? I’m still thinking yes since you’d expect him to be position high at Arena Mexico next week and he could show off his new belt.

This is one time I’m hoping cmll.com updates the videos section early tomorrow as they’ve done a few times in the past.:D

  6. Oh yeah, new champs as well! Cubs called it perfectly. I can’t tell if Ovaciones is saying the entire match was 15 minutes or if the first fall was 15 minutes, the second fall was 2 minutes and the third fall was 6 minutes. I’m leaning towards 15 overall for obvious reasons.
