CMLL GDR - 08/19/06 (#39)

This week, there were NO extra interviews; no one getting dressed, no talking to someone who wasn't actually on the show. The only interviews they did were with the mask match participants before and after the match.

Match 1: Arkángel (c), Hooligan, Loco Max vs Leono, Stuka Jr., Tony Rivera (c)
Arena Coliseo, 08/13/06

  1. tecnicos
  2. rudos
  3. tecnicos

Winner: Tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time:
11:42
Approx Rating: Just okay.
Other Match Notes: Hooligan enters to Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones, because he is quite British. I can't tell if he's in the Guerreros here, though his tights are kinda a red version of the current design. It seems like forever since we've seen him; he's was on the third show and hasn't been back since. Loco Max apparently thinks he's Guapo this week. Interview with Arkángel - it's the night of the rudos and they're going to win, he says twice. And then he yells! Leono is wearing white, which is weird to see because no one seems to wear white. (For good reason.) Tony Rivera is wearing a cowprint coat, but once he takes that off, and in the pre-match interview, he looks like he's auditioning for a shot in TNA's LAX group. He's fired up and actually has something to say (unlike Arkángel), challenging Hooligan to a mask match. I'd watch that. It's not going to happen, but still.

1: Ark tries to mess with Stuka before the match, but Stuka moves and Ark goes flying out of the ring. Undaunted, Arkángel challenges Stuka to come out there and face him. Stuka does, and they exchange in back and forth strikes. They eventually agree to go back in. More chain wrestling when they get back in, and even near falls, wow. Leono and Loco Max next. Fans do chant Leono's name. They do a fast set of zero falls. Leono gets a submission, and Hooligan breaks it up with stomp. Tony runs him off. Loco gets back to his feet, but is limping for a bit. Tony immediately gets the legscissors back, Arkángel teases breaking it up, Stuka gets in to confront him, and Ark just attacks Stuka instead. It breaks down from there, with all six men in, and the rudos seemingly getting the advantage, but the focus being more on Stuka and Arkángel on the outside. Once Stuka is tossed up in the aisle, things go the other way, with tecnicos going three on one rudo. Loco Max is thrown form the ring and Hooligan takes a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Arkángel starts clearing the ring with open hand slaps, but Leono ducks his and hooks on a standing octopus hold. Meanwhile, Stuka backdrops Loco Max and Tony adds a frog splash. One two three. (5:01) Stuka nearly goes over Hooligan on a quebrada and is totally in the ropes on the pin, but they'll count that as three too. (5:12) Leono beats up Arkángel in the corner some for good measure.

2: Tony draws in both Ark and Hooligan to start as the fall begins (clip here?), and manages a double faceslam on the rudos. Stuka asks in to face Arkángel, but Loco cuts him off with a kick before he can get to his rival (at least for this match. Loco hands Stuka over to Hooligan to drag his face on the ropes, and the rudos take control for a beatdown. Leono gets in a few shots on Loco Max, but Hooligan takes him down and puts him in a half crab. That's over quick. (1:20) Meanwhile, Stuka reveres a whip and manages a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Arkángel. Dumbly, he goes to look at the crowd and gets jumped from behind before he can do any more. Meanwhile, Loco top rope splashes Tony Rivera, and there ends the fall. (1:43)

3: Rudos still firmly in control starting this fall. Tony Rivera's brought in, kicked, and rolls out. Stuka gets beaten by Arkángel a bit more, including showing his slingshot elbow drop. Leono takes Loco Max down again (must be unresolved Puebla feelings), but Loco smartly holds him there until his partners can help. What are they trying now? Arkángel hangs Leono in the ropes (with a little help from Leono) and Hooligan and Loco Max hit stereo double axhandles to each side. Snap mare, and Hooligan and Loco Max's dropkicks to the head are almost timed right. Tony Rivera in and worked over. Ark holds him for the double clothesline, and that's the end of the beatdown. Stuka goes directly for Arkángel and his mask. Is this just a one match thing? Leono comes in to help, knocking down Arkángel with a big open hand slap. Tony gets his turn, and gets - uh, beat, actually. Ark reverses a corner whip, charges in (slowing down before he goes all the way, then finishing up anyway), and chest slaps him a few times. Tony stumbles out of the corner, back into the ring, and they might have had a ring. Arkángel corner whips him back in the corner, charges, stops short, and gives Tony a look of frustration. Tony then gets around to giving Ark a double boot. That was weird. Middle rope headscissors, and Ark stumbles into a punch form Stuka. Hooligan ends Tony out, and Leono is in to take his place. Leono's chops do not work, but Hooligan's chops do. Whip, Leono with a nice twisting headscissors, and out to the apron for a top rope Asai Moonsault! Stuka and Loco in, and Loco knocks out Stuka with a jumping dropkick. Tope con giro! Tony in, and waiting for Arkángel, who doesn't seem to be nearly as excited. Ark pounds Tony back and slowly heads up - too slow, so Tony can armdrags him off. Tony heads to the middle rope, no, the top rope, waiting for Ark, who's taking his time getting up. Tony jumps for a 'rana and almost spikes himself when Ark blocks it. (His head does end p on the ground as Ark holds him up. And then Tony rolls thru to complete it anyway. One two three. (4:47) Never let those two wrestle each other again! That was screwed up. Crowd chants for Tony. Leono and Tony are too busy celebrating to check on their partner - oh, there to go. Replay of Leono's dive, which looked great.

Survey: Who you got in the Big Match? There's a poll meter which goes up equally for both women, because this is quite the close matchup

That last guy is wrong! In a shocking turn of events, they've got an equal number of people picking each person. I think 90% of the people who said Medusa surely must've been asked "who's going to lose" instead of "who's going to win". Or 500 people were asked, and they showed all 11 who picked Medusa.

Match 2: La Medusa vs India Sioux in a mask versus mask match
Arena Coliseo, 08/13/06

Winner: India Sioux (via La Rosa)
Match Time: 13:55 (7:45+6:10)
Approx Rating: much better than expectations, though I wouldn't call great
Other Match Notes: It's spelling with one 's' on her ring jacket. Medusa seems nervous in her pre-match interview. Hey, so am I. India is quite fired up for the match. Magadan smells India's hair in their pre-match interview. I have no idea what's going on, but it ends up cracking her up. Someone found the La Ruda/La Tecnica graphics! Leono is in India's corner, and Sangre Azteca is in Medusa's corner. I guess the Aztecans and the Sioux don't get along! Rafael el Maya is your ref.

Medusa rushes India to start the match a bit early. Medusa throws around India by her hair, and rips off India's jacket - so she can choke India with it. She lets go just long enough so the ref can get rid of it. Medusa stomps. Corner whip, Medusa charges in and lands a clothesline. Medusa trips up India to a seated position, and gives her a bronco buster. Cover one two NO, India does not lose her mask on a bronco buster in one minute. Stomp by Medusa. Whip, clothesline. Stomp. Medusa pulls up India by her hair, but India breaks free and fights back with a chest slap. Chest slap battle ends when Medusa kicks India down and mocks the India chants. Whip, drop toe hold, Medusa not sure what's he's doing next, settles on an off the ropes dropkick to the head. One two NO. Full nelson! India does not break it, and gets thrown down. Rowdy tecnicos still chanting for India. Stomp for Medusa. Dangerously low headbutt drop by Medusa. She taunts the fans with her close to illegalness. Let's look at Leono, the tape on his nose, and his weird contacts. Medusa hooks India's legs around the ropes and yanks them back. Whip, dropkick by India, and she's trying to draw from the crowd. Another dropkick - no, she moves, and Medusa stomps her down. Snap mare, chinlock. Yea, this was inevitable. Unable to choke India out, Medusa throws down the chinlock and mocks the fns for cheering for India. Dropkick to the head by Medusa. Medusa paying more attention to the chants for India than to India for herself. Stomp. Camel clutch! Not quite perfectly applied, but this match hasn't been as bad as I feared. It hasn't been great either. Boot choke by Medusa. Again, she goes towards the rowdy tecnico fans to tell them to stop chanting, and they don't,. Medusa picks up India by the hair, and India fires back to throw her by the hair. India is warned for her hair usage, but she's rallying. Dropkick, drawing from the crowd, oh, he's kicked down again. Medusa yanks India around the ropes, pulling her ponytail quite a bit. After Medusa throws India own, India spends a bit of time fixing it. This has been over six minutes of almost all Medusa, and there's plenty of time left in the show. Whip, flapjack. Medusa chants for another, since the fans won't. Fans are almost beaten down by this point, and not nearly as loud. Whip, flapjack reversed into a split legged facebuster, and India's trying to come back one again. Clotheslines, and Medusa won't go, so India slaps her in the face a bunch. Off the ropes, dropkick, and that gets Medusa down into the ropes. India teases dive, Medusa ducks down, so India changes rote - double jump plancha! Both women down. Replay - India held onto the top rope to keep her pancake on the way out, but that was still fun. This is a good time for a break, so they take it. (7:45)

Both women are just getting into the ring and to their feet as we return. India can't get Medusa down with a shoulderblock. Off the ropes, cartwheel over, dance (!), off the ropes, twisting headscissors looked fraught with danger but worked out. India charges, right into a drop toe hold. Medusa off the ropes, 619 connects. That move would've looked tremendously better if we weren't treated to a close-up of India bracing herself (instead of making any effort to get free) for ten seconds. Medusa dropkicks India as she gets up, and India goes tumbling out of the ring. Silla! Medusa crashes into the front row and hurts her knee somewhere along here. Both women are slow up, so we've got time for a couple of replays. India gets in, just in time to be kicked down by Medusa. Chop. India's looking tired. Right hand by Medusa. Whip, India back with a bodyscissors into a - a cristo by Medusa! India's in all kinds of trouble here. She breaks free, bodyscissors, rollup one two NO! Both slow up. India charges, 'rana is caught and turned into into a bounce off the top rope powerbomb one two NO. Slow up again, India charges, ducks a clothesline, top rope headscissors, Medusa re-reversed one two NO! Medusa sets up for a leg submission - India small package one.. two...NO. India might have booted the ref in the mouth on the kick out. Someone did, because he's checking it. Medusa tiredly slams India. She's heading up? This would seem to be quite unique. Middle rope splash connects! One two th-NO! Rowdy fans are getting loud. India tries a 'rana, doesn't quite have, doesn't matter because Medusa rudely powerbombs her to the mat. Medusa starts to put her feet on the ropes, realize the ref hasn't started to count, one, now her feet are on the ropes, but right in front of Leono who's yelling loudly about it, two - ah, the ref saw it in time. The ref breaks up the pin and has harsh words for Medusa while Sangre throws a fit. India shoulderblock, springboard bodyscissors (almost knocking herself on the down beat) into a roll up, one two NO. India up quick, and on Medusa. Kick, La Majistral doesn't get going before Medusa reverses it into an inside cradle one two NO! India draws from the crowd, but still gets run over by back elbow. Medusa says this is it. Off the ropes, clothesline caught and India gives her La Rosa (though she never gets the head trapped). India adds an elbow drop for good measure one two THREE. (6:10, 13:55 total) India celebrates, then collapses coming down off the corner. Leono carries her around the ring, but she's even too tired for that. Sangre argues with Leono and the ref about the injustice which just went down. The fans are pretty happy with it, though. Medusa is SURE she had her shoulder up. Break.

Medusa wants to untie her own mask, but can't get it, so Sangre helps. Sangre takes it off for her as she bends down, and Medusa pulls back her hair so her face will be exposed when she looks down. She's announced as Angelica Avila Lopez of Tijuana. She seems sad in the post-match interview. Which makes sense. That one's backstage - they interview India in ring with the mask she's just won, and she's very excited.
