CMLL GDR - 08/12/06 (#38)
Recapped: 08/19/06
They've cut out the opening clip package, but not the wacky announcer introduction segment or the captain's interviews. And we get Blue Panther Q/A while he's dressing for a match we won't see this week. Panther would not want his children to be luchadors.
There's a horrible echo in the pre-match interview with Lady Apache. Why are we getting a prematch interview with her anyway? She's not on the show! Actually, it turns out to be a lot of inset interviews leading to her throwing out a title match challenge, which isn't on/in the cards. Given the sound quality, why didn't they just scrap this and retape it on a week where it was slightly relevant?
Match 1: La Nazi, Medusa, Princesa Sujei (c) vs Dark Angel (c), India Sioux, Marcela
Arena Coliseo, 08/06/06
Winner: Tecnicas (India pins Medusa)
Match Time: 5:56 (4:21+1:35)
Approx Rating: not so good, quite short
Other Match Notes: Intros. India enters second for her team, and they jump
her right way. Dark Angel has a new outfit! It was about time. She actually runs
to the ring to make the save (she's still not totally lucha, ha) but of course
gets taken down anyway. Why don't they have "Las Tecnicas" and
"Las Rudas" graphics?
Some level of ruda teamwork to start, though it 's all very simple stuff. India skips over La Nazi on a drop down, which hilariously out of place. Medusa gets to yank at her mask a bunch. They do not look good together, which worries me greatly. For something that probably didn't actually go on forever, the beatdown still felt like it went down forever. Crack production goes to the far away overhead shot just as Marcela turns the tide (pulling powerbomb on La Nazi), and they cut to the pre break vignette just as the comeback's starting. (4:21)
Show picks up in mid comeback. Dark Angel has a good tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. India goes after Medusa's mask, of course. Lots of enlarging eye holes. They both end up outside, and Angel and Marcela get the other two with missile dropkicks. Dark Angel also shows off a nice thru the ropes tope, and Marcela lands the top rope plancha. India and Medusa back in the ring, and of course we're right to the ref bumps. They battle over grabbing masks, it takes India much longer to pull off Medusa's than it probably was supposed to, and then she gets the small package for the win. (1:35) That was an odd place for a break; just 90 seconds of action after it. It should've been a minute or two earlier, for sure. Let's ignore how the match ended without a captain being pinned.
Post match, India lays down the ULTIMATE challenge, although we can't really hear her microphone over the TV, just over the Coliseo speakers. Medusa's mask is hiding very little at this point. Crowd seems excited to see the mask match. Medusa says no, the crowd chants at her, Medusa changes her mind and agrees. The match is signed for next week
Match 2: Atlantis, Olimpico vs Mistico, Negro Casas for the CMLL World Tag Team
Championship
Arena Coliseo, 08/06/06
Winner: Mistico & Negro Casas, 4th Defense
Match Time: 14:54
Approx Rating: 87. Fun, only one horribly short fall, perfectly acceptable
tag defense even if the belts never really felt in danger
Other Match Notes: Atlantis has a fancy new black robe and makes the
"I want the belt" motions many times, but doesn't he already have a
belt? Not here. Olimpico is the definition of jacked. Always good to see the
champions actually have their belts. Neither guy is actually wearing them.
Mistico's robe may be new, or at least he got wings added onto the back. Crowd
does sides with the tecnicos. Your refs are Tiger Hispanic and Rodolfo Ruiz.
Crowd chants - get this - Mistico. They might have said Tony Salazar was here to
represent CMLL, but I'm not sure.
Who's going to start? It looks like Negro and Atlantis, though Mistico is taking his time leaving. I guess he wanted to have a word with Tiger Hispano about not looking the wrong way at the wrong time. Lockup, Negro tries to get behind, Atlantis grabs his arm and tries to for a crossface chickenwing, but Negro gets out to a reverse hammerlock of his own before Atlantis can really get it locked. Atlantis escapes with a single leg takedown and a toehold. Negro rolls to his stomach to get free, but Atlantis turns it into a knee hold, and then adds a chinlock. Negro reaches for the ropes - he's got them, so Atlantis let go, pulls him back, and puts on a legscissors. Let's see how this match looks from far away - bad! Negro's gotten control and pins one arm with his knee while working a wristlock on the other. Atlantis gets free and trips Negro back to the mat, and covers for almost two. Atlantis gets a zero cover, and keep going when Negro gets up. Hammerlock is reversed into a headlock by Negro, is reverse. They battle over a top wristlock, and Atlantis is able to spin Negro down to the mat, pinning Negro with his wrist behind him. Negro spins free and trips up Atlantis, buying him some time to check on his arm. Negro stops to talk with Mistico and look at the crowd. Rowdy fans are chanting his name. Lockup, Negro with an wristlock, forcing Atlantis down, and now trying for a cross armbreaker. Atlantis locking his hands to prevent his arm from being extended, Negro blocks it and starts to extend it, and Atlantis rolls him over to his stomach to get free. TAPATIA! Will Negro give? No, Atlantis rolls back to pin Negro (and himself), one both men break free. Negro thinks it's wise to tag out, and does. Olimpico and Mistico in now. Mistico take a moment to stoke the crowd, which Olimpico does not dig. Lockup, Mistico with an armdrag. Olimpico, single leg, armdrag, Mistico holds on, kips up, armdrag of his own, Olimpico needs a moment in the corner, AND he needs the fans to shut up. Olimpico single leg, Mistico rolls into a headscissors from the mat. Would the fans please be quiet for Olimpico? Olimpico charges, Mistico easily drop toe holds him, 619 is ducked under, Olimpico "trips" Mistico (way to take a bump on your own) to start dueling zero counts and we have an indy standoff. Atlantis & Negro were better, for not doing a standoff spot (and other reasons, sure.) Mistico off the ropes, handspring into an Olimpico dropkick. What was Mistico thinking there? Atlantis thinks it time for the beatdown. Negro gets rammed into the post, and a boot for Monito too. Double whip, double backdrop for Mistico. Atlantis holds him in position for an Olimpico springboard dropkick. Olimpico's all forced up, and Mistico may be out. Atlantis dopers the elbow, once and twice. Dropkick sends Mistico out. Atlantis grabs Negro as he comes in. Double whip, double backdrop, Negro almost over spinning on it. Rudos wait for him to get up so they boot him. Negro's knocked out of the ring. Mistico back in, kicked and cornered. Mistico takes a fireman's carry to set up an Olimpico springboard splash one two three. (6:32) Atlantis wants the belt, but ought to pin Negro first. Olimpico punches Negro a few times, and whips him over - Atlántida. This one is done. (6:47) Challengers need just one more fall! Break.
Atlantis and Olimpico crown themselves champions. They're going to be heartbroken when they remember this is a three fall match. Here's the bit where they pose with the belts, allowing Alexis to take a picture and screw with everyone. So RUDO. No, I guess Scorpio is hear to be the commissioner, so they were just dropping Tony Salazar's name to be dropping Tony Salazar's name. I often find myself doing the same. Mistico reminds the rudos that they are not the champions, but they are indeed the two and he is the one when he comes in. Press slam onto Atlantis' knee, and now they get around to blowing the whistle. Atlantis gets to stomping, and keeping Negro off the apron with a kick. Olimpico shows off his strength with a hanging suplex. Atlantis demonstrates just how super strong Olimpico is by attempting to shove Mistico down, but Olimpico keeps on holding him up. Olimpico adds a legdrop, as I wonder how quick the WWE would be to sign him if he were about 5 inches taller. What a great horrible idea that'd be. Atlantis goes after Mistico's mask, Negro goes after Atlantis' mask, Olimpico can't quite go after Negro's mask so he dropkicks him to break up the whole mess. Olimpico plants Negro in the corner so he can add a running boot to the head. He's so taking the dropkick to the face later. Atlantis whips Negro in the corner and clotheslines him, then holds him for a Olimpico dropkick. No springboard this time. Elbow drop by Atlantis. Olimpico pulls Negro to his feet by his hair. Double whip, Negro slows and ducks under the double clothesline (awkward!) and Mistico returns with a springboard headscissors on Olimpico. Atlantis misses the senton on Mistico, missed the clothesline on Negro, and Negro takes him down and puts on a sharpshooter. He's done (1:28) Hardly ever see Negro use that lately. Meanwhile, Mistico's got a bodyscissors into a small package on Olimpico for three. (1:32) ALL TIED UP. Crowd is not quite as jakked as Olimpico, but they're getting there (excitement wise. Not other way.) MIST I CO MIST I CO. Here's some replays for you. Break.
Negro and Atlantis start the final fall swinging at each other. Atlantis goes to the forearm first, but Negro goes to the forearm best. Whip, reversed, and Atlantis stops him with the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Right hand for Mistico just for being Mistico. Atlantis misses a clothesline, and Negro does not miss on the heel kick. Atlantis out, Olimpico rushing in with a big boot, Negro catches it and gives him a kneebreaker. Olimpico's hurting and rolling out - that leaves Negro no one to fight. Atlantis would come in, but he's got help stretch Olimpico's hurting leg. Tigre Hispanic explains the concept of a twenty count, and in comes Atlantis. Mistico in to fight him. Those white gloves have to be new, right? I'd hope I would notice that before, but I'm not sure. Crowd lets us know what Mistico's name is. Atlantis posing does not help. Atlantis lets less with open hand slaps, but Mistico is not going down - ah, wait, he is. Atlantis is stoked (and trying to kick the ropes to get Negro crotched.) Atlantis spending far too much time fooling around and not following up - there's the Mistico superkick. Mistico flipping run, Mistico crazy twisting headscissors, check check check. Olimpico in, and Mistico takes a moment to take form the crowd. Spinning headscissors on him, wristlock, kick, run up the ropes, and spinning armdrags on the way down. Olimpico sent out, Mistico teases the dive but bails when Olimpico moves - so Negro gets him with the silla. Negro takes moment to relax with some front row fans. Back in the ring, Mistico hits a double jump armdrags on Atlantis, and follows him out with a tornillo! Champions are rolling here, though Mistico needs a moment to catch his breath. Someone ought o get in the ring. Until they do, here's a replay of the tornillo. Pure pescado style, with Mistico stopping at the ropes, but a lot of spin. Negro and Atlantis back in, and Atlantis land a spinebuster. STF. Olimpico in, sizing it up, and calmly stomping Negro off. Atlantis limps out of the ring while Olimpico spinebusters. Inverted nudo by Olimpico, and Mistico calmly breaks it up with a kick to Olimpico's head. Negro slaps Olimpico in the back of the head on his way out. Mistico Michinoku Driver! One two, Atlantis breaks that one up in a bit of a hurry. Atlantis whip, tilt-a-whirl backbreaker kills Mistico. Atlantis takes a moment so show off his muscles, and puts on a figure four! He IS Ric Flair. Mistico is screaming in pain, so Negro walks all the way around the hold, takes time to shove a referee out of the way - by the way, this is a great time to spot Alexis if you haven't seen him before - and Negro breaks it up with a senton on Atlantis. One, two, Olimpico breaks that up with a dropkick to Negro's face. Rudos take control, whipping the champs into each other. Atlantis turns to Olimpico and makes the belt motion; Olimpico fails to do the same, and this is why he's not awesome. Sorry. Atlantis can't believe this fans still insist on chanting for Mistico. High ten by the rudos, they charge, Negro ducks Olimpico's clothesline but Mistico gets leveled by Atlantis. Negro goes to one knee to check on Mistico and gets booted in the face by Olimpico quite awesomely. (He's still not there. Negro checks on Mistico anyway, and waves for the fans to keep chanting. Tecnicos duck clotheslines, both try for 'ranas, powerbombs by the rudos, feet on the ropes one two NO!. Negro actually kicks Tiger Hispano in anger for missing the feet on the ropes, and Hispano takes a bump and rolls out of the ring. It's not focused on, though. Champs off the ropes, bodyscissors rollup and 'rana (wow, Negro CAN do it), one two NO. Mistico rallies the crowd as Tiger Hispano comes back in. Rudos off the ropes, tecnicos drop the clothesline, dropkick to the knee, LA Majistral and La Mistica at the same time! It's over! (6:35) Champions retain! No, that IS Tony Salazar. Well, I don't know. Crowd chants for Mistico while Negro stands nearby. Pose for photos. And then the lights go off! Everyone go home!
That's it.
