CMLL GDR - 07/29/06 (#36)

Match 1: Kenzo Suzuki vs Misterioso II vs Leono vs Ultimo Dragon in a seeding battle royal
Arena Coliseo, 07/23/06

  1. Misterioso eliminated by Ultimo (1:14)
  2. Leono eliminated by Ultimo (3:32)

Survivors: Kenzo Suzuki & Ultimo Dragon
Match Time: 3:32
Approx Rating: Typical seeding battle royal; missable.
Other Match Notes: No entrances. Leono is filling for Tarzan, who we know now is injury. I'm sure Tarzan's partners are sad he's hurt, but they must've been thrilled Leono was here to take the pointless bumps in this match instead of them. Leono doesn't fit in this match from a tecnico/rudo standpoint or a card level stand point, but Leono ought to be Tarzan's understudy anyway, since that's his future ceiling. (His future basement would seem to be Tony Rivera.) Misterioso is in here for the same reason Leono, and Ultimo is here to have a dramatic face off with Kenzo. Misterioso left quick, leading to a 2 tecnicos on 1 rudo bit. Kenzo took a sliding dropkicking thru the ropes, started to slide to the apron, and then realized he had no idea if he was allowed to touch the floor or not. (Come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure either. I think he would've been fine, but I didn't see that section in the rules!) Ultimo and Leono tried to double suplex Kenzo (presumably over the ropes to the floor), but Kenzo was too large a man for them, and powered into his own double suplex. He's a scary monster, you see. Dragon turned on Leono for no particular reason and then kinda held him in the corner for a bit while Kenzo caught his breath. This was quite lame. Leono then whipped Ultimo in the ropes, Ultimo bounced off the ropes, Ultimo rethought and backed up to grab the ropes, Ultimo waved Leono to charge him now, Leono dutifully did, and Dragon shockingly backdropped him out. I like how Leono comes flying at a front row guy, and he just calmly eats his popcorn. That's so ME at lucha shows. For the record, Dragon was the one who wanted to keep on fighting when it came down to him and Kenzo was the one who was savvy to the rules. Think about that! Maybe it's a fire-y tecnico thing.

We get the Perros entrance (to Misterioso's music! which is actually Sandman's music! - and Okumura has a Okumura shirt?) before getting

Interview: with newly short hair do Mr. Aguila. He hypes us his partners as "Misterioso, the man who beat Pantera for his mask, and Okumura, who's, uh, tough guy." I may be imagining some of that. Perros del Mal are super, you know.

Match 2: Misterioso II, Mr. Aguila (c), Okumura vs Atlantis (c), Olimpico, Leono in a torneo semifinal
Arena Coliseo, 07/23/06

Winner: Atlantis, Olimpico, Leono (Atlántida on Aguila.)
Match Time: 2:24
Approx Rating: It was a two minute completely one sided match, what do you think?
Other Match Notes: Leono is wearing an EVIL wifebeater. This is my most favorite one day rudo turn since - the last one? Oh wait

Interview: Atlantis. Explain Leono, the commentator asks, and Atlantis does a heroic job - see, they're the best fighting group in the world, and they're always evaluating future prospects, so this is Leono's Big Chance. They've had their eye on Leono, and Atlantis illustrates this by POINTING TO HIS EYE. Atlantis promises to kill Rey later for being a traitor. That's unfortunate.

We rejoin The Match just in time for the Guerreros to get punked. Mr. Aguila press slams Leono, which is a bit impressive. Leono's dropped over the top rope, and kept in for some three on one. Atlantis and Olimpico try to make the save and Olimpico gets the o on 3 instead, including a really weak double boot. Atlantis gets his chance, and fails. This is listed as rudos/rudos - which it is correct. Atlantis tries to fight back against Okumura, and Okumura beats him. Eye rake. Choke with Mr. Aguila's PdM shirt. Atlantis is sent out, and Leono's brought back in. Lots of work on him over by the ropes, but it the stalling doesn't hurt - double spinebuster lift for Mr. Águila to a dropkick down, double catapult for Mr. Aguila to clothesline the other way, and a guillotine legdrop to end it. More team chemistry than I would've figured. Olimpico in and taking double hiptoss face first powerbomb to set up Mr. Aguila dropkick., Atlantis complains to the referee about the lack of a one on one, and still gets beat coming in. Atlantis is whipped into the corner, but the opposition are paying no attention when he stops short. Mr. Aguila is whipped in after him - and Atlantis lifts him up into the Atlántida! THAT'S IT! ONE MOVE VICTORY! Olimpico goes nuts in celebration and the Guerreros kick the opposition out of the ring. Misterioso's all "wait, what the heck just happened here? How did we lose?" So here's a replay for him. That was a perfect finish to a two minute match.

Match 3: Kenzo Suzuki, Johnny Stamboli, Mark Corelone (c) vs Ultimo Dragon, Lizmark Jr., Rey Bucanero (c) in a torneo semifinal
Arena Coliseo, 07/23/06

Winner: Tecnicos (Rey top rope superplex Stamboli; Lizmark sit down powerbomb Jindrak)
Match Time: 4:14
Approx Rating: The rudos almost have an idea! Never let Lizmark powerbomb a large man again.
Other Match Notes: Jindrak wears his Italian flag as a cape. They're still calling him Corelone and he's still wearing MJ trunks. Kenzo has the wacky masks and swords again. oh, an interview!

Interview: Magadan talks to Marco Corelone. They do this in English, to my delight. And they have the Theme From The Godfather because they're ITALIAN, you see.
Magadan: "What do you think about the uh....... wrestlers you have to confront?"
Marco: "I think the wrestlers I have to confront tonight are garbage. I'm from Italy! Soccer, World Cup Champions! Wrestling, Champions!"
(Magadan translates for us.)

I was hoping that'd go longer, but I think they did that just for me so I'm not complaining. Back at the ring, Rey has The Belt. We've got to decide one of this weeks which belt is The Belt now that Ultimo's not champion.

Interview: with Rey (with The Belt). He's got good partners and he's going to get some revenge on Atlantis. I wonder what the final will possibly be!

Bucanero chants hurts Stamboli's ears. I guess he's a guy! Stamboli surely has some unresolved Velocity anger towards Ultimo Dragon here. Kenzo chokes Lizmark on the ropes, who has too much fun shaking them. The rudos have learned the concept of a beatdown, but I think I'm waiting for them to learn the teamwork part. It's all lame brawling. Jindrak at least chats with the fans as he does it. Kenzo is loving the choke on the ropes. Stamboli does some awful weak paintbrushing to Lizmark before hammering him with forearms. This is like the opposite of exciting. Jindrak slams Lizmark! That was slight action! Johnny does his stop rope twisting legdrop and does not break his tailbone. Kenzo is still doing his strutting kneedrop. Rey in, and it's a three on one, but it's still one guy does a move while the other two stand far away. Rey takes a Snake Eyes and a springboard clothesline from Jindrak. Everyone pose. Well, not Rey. Ultimo in and gets his combo on Kenzo for the second time in the last half hour, but it goes no where. Kiss of Death on Ultimo?  Wait, no, they're taking so long, and Rey and Lizmark break it up. Did Lizmark get of being beat down? It's good to be him. Rey gets the rope sit on Kenzo with some help from Lizmark, and it's 3 on one brawls. Rey ends up giving Johnny Stamboli a on the top rope superplex, and that's thankfully the finish. I wonder if that hurts more or less than the Buca Storm? Oh, wait, Corelone was the captain, so Lizmark get to get in moves on him. There's a Stunner (even Jindrak can't do the bounce sell, because it's just a pause move to set up the next spot), there's Lizmark nearly kills Jindrak three different ways on a sit down powerbomb. One two three The fall is clearly over, but Ultimo has to get in his finish and his pin on Kenzo, so there you go.

Match 4: Atlantis (c), Olimpico, Leono vs Ultimo Dragon, Lizmark Jr., Rey Bucanero (c) in a torneo final
Arena Coliseo, 07/23/06

Winner: Tecnicos
Match Time: 2:34
Approx Rating: It was a final.
Other Match Notes: We join with both teams in the ring; I think the Guerreros rushed out here after the last match and we've clipped a bit of that.

Atlantis and Rey start, which means Atlantis knocks Rey down and stomps him a bunch. Atlantis with a headlocks, shot off, over, under, Atlantis lands the hiptoss. Rey pose, as we're still just catching up with matchups; we miss Atlantis knocking Rey down while seeing the tecnicos. Atlantis throws Rey thru the ropes, but Rey swings back and lands a bad dropkick. Atlantis sidesteps a dive attempt, so Rey slides out, they both go for hiptosses, Rey's wins and Atlantis gets tossed up in the aisle. Let's check the rudos - yep, still the same guys. Back in the ring, Olimpico and Lizmark take over. Olimpico poses for us. Olimpico offers a handshake? He even bows to Dragon. Ultimo has to think this over. Nah. Olimpico is very angry about this, but Último won't do it. So Olimpico armdrags him anyway. Dragon shoulderblock, under, roll over, waved by, back for a loss spinning headscissors. Three Kick Combo knock Olimpico out. Ultimo teases and strokes the crowd, Olimpico stands there, Dragon does leap to to the apron and lands the Asai Moonsault. Lizmark and Leono in. Leono off the ropes, right into a scoop by Leono. Spinning side slam, but he's all in the ropes - guess the ref is going to count it anyway? One two three. Replays. Rey ducks a clothesline and gives Atlantis the Buca Storm one two three. They win the tournament. Yay for them. Replays.

Interview: Ultimo Guerrero. He's going to defeat Dos, and then he's coming back for his belt.

Interview: Dos Caras Jr. By making it one one one, he's going to stop the GdA shenanigans.

Match 5: Ultimo Guerrero vs Dos Caras Jr.
Arena Coliseo, 07/23/06

  1. Dos cross arm breaker (2:14)
  2. Ultimo powerbomb with ropes (1:42)
  3. Dos sit with ropes (7:54)

Winner: Dos Caras Jr. (2-1)
Match Time: 11:50
Approx Rating: 80.
Other Match Notes: Guerrero jumps Dos as he enters, and we're off.

Well, maybe not off, as Ultimo stops between stomps to hassle the Dos Caras fan section. Ultimo brings the match back in, where both guys are pointing to fans. Ultimo kicks Dos in the head to keep him down. Dos set up in the corner - is he going for the mask or the finish? Looks like the mask, with Ultimo quickly untying it and trying to pull it off. He gets it off his back, and Dos holds it over his face as usual. We've got the back shot, too, so we can't see it - though it does appear to come off fully away from us, and certainly does again when Ultimo pulls Dos down into the tree of woe (clearly shown on TV.) Ultimo kicks him down from there. Whip, drop toe hold, back elbow to the back. Ultimo pulls at the mask again, and again Dos does a bad job keeping it on - Dos' face is exposed a third time when Ultimo stomps Dos and Dos moves his hand (with his mask) away from his face to react. Corner whip, reversed, Dos rushes in with the corner enziguri. Ultimo tries a clothesline, Dos reveres into the arm scissors into the cross arm breaker, and that's it. (2:14) He did it in two moves, Atlantis did it in one. Atlantis is thus clearly better.

Clip ahead to the start of the second fall. There's no corner men here, I notice. That goes with Dos' strategy. Dos brought in the  Dos Caras support banner, but Ultimo stole it, whipped his face with it, and tore it up! Dos can't believe he'd do such a thing, and leads the crowds chants against Ultimo. Both of them off the ropes, Ultimo tries a jumping shoulderblock, but Dos isn't going down. Both men off the ropes, and again Dos won't go down to Ultimo's shoulderblock. Ultimo tells Dos to give it a try, Dos off the ropes, and Ultimo clotheslines him. Ultimo celebrates logic. Whip, reversed, and Ultimo rushes into a Dos overhead belly to belly suplex. Dos off the ropes, waved by, and back with a twisting headscissors. Off the ropes, teasing a dive, Dos slides out and Ultimo slides in. Dos slides back in, Ultimo tries to surprise him with a senton and misses. Dos tries a 'rana, Ultimo blocks it into a powerbomb, cover with feet on the middle rope, one two three (1:42) The announcers lost their mind when Ultimo put his feet on the middle rope. Break.

Both men are waving to the crowd to start this fall. Dos tells Ultimo he's got his own ion him, and then goes to pose on the corner. We've got another session of dueling crowd reactions, but it seems to be short. Three girls are doing a Dos Caras chant. Ultimo finally strikes Dos when he goes to pose too much, but Dos turns it around in the corner for the corner enziguri, one two no. Dos backs up and draws from the crowd a bit. Kick is caught and blocked, and Ultimo clotheslines him, one two no. Ultimo recovering, Dos drawing from the fans again. Kicks connect, Ultimo blocks one and takes a 'rana one two NO. Dos shoves Ultimo in the corner and forearms him a bit. Corner whip, Dos charges in, Ultimo jumps up, corner sunset flip one two no. Corner whip, Ultimo charges in, Dos moves, and Ultimo takes the knee bump out. Dos sets up - and goes over the top on a tope. Both men down, Dos checking his knee and catching his breath. Plenty of time for a replay. Looks like we missed the usual bit of Dos getting in, thinking he's won, and being pulled into a cavernaria. Dos hangs on, fades, comes back, fades, comes back, comes all the way back, starts to break the chinlock, can't, tries again, summons all of his strength, and does it. That was fun. Both men are slow up. Dos looking shaken till he draws from the crowd yet again. Now he's fired up, and Ultimo's clotheslines have no effect. Don't start doing the Niebla dance, man! Dos urges Ultimo to try harder, and Ultimo runs right into a heel kick. Dos charges, 'rana blocked into a powerbomb again, feet on the ropes again, one two - no, both Dos counting and referee Tiger Hispano maybe noticing - not sure what was first. Dos is unhappy it took him that long to notice and argues with the ref - Ultimo inside cradle one two NO. Ultimo with a body slam, and he's heading up - oh no. Top rope tope con giro misses, Dos covers, one two..th-NO. Dos hates that slow count, and so do I. Dos draws from the fans once more. Corner whip, corner clotheslines. Ultimo set up on the top rope, and Dos gingerly follows him. 'rana? Middle rope powerbomb! Cover him, Ultimo! One two t-NO! Dos Caras chant starts again, because he might actually win this one. Replay of the powerbomb, looked quite hard. Ultimo misses a clothesline, dos boots him and calls for his finish. Press slam, dropped down into the waistlock, German suplex bridge one two foot on the rope! Dos keeps holding, waiting for a third count that's not coming. Dos then wonders if he should punch the ref. The ref remains him he might want to worry about Ultimo, but Dos will not, and he gets forearmed in the back. Ultimo corner whip, reversed, Dos charges in, Ultimo tries the corner sunset flip once again, Dos tries to grab the ropes and sit down to block it, but loses the ropes, referee starts to make his count, and Ultimo rolls backwards to force Dos into the ropes so he can do the booked finish with Dos grabbing the ropes for leverage, one two three. (7:54) That was all Ultimo and he is awesome. This match, I'm not so strong about. Ultimo protests about the injustice of someone using the ropes for a victory. So sad. It's tough not being the champ. Here's a replay of Ultimo making sure the finish worked.

No post-match Dos Caras interview. That's it.
