CMLL Mini Line - 03/04/06 (#213)

Gala skipped five weeks of TV leading up to this episode. It's also the bizarre episode where they somehow aired the main event to start and end the show, omitting the actual opener (Lady Apache, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Princesa Sujei, La Nazi). I'm going to recap the main event last, because it's the main event.

Welcome To The Show Vignette: Universo 2000

Match 1: Dr. X, Nitro, Sangre Azteca (c) vs Texano Jr., Maximo (c), Sagrado in a Mexican National Trios Championship match
Arena Coliseo, 10/04/05

  1. tecnicos
  2. rudos
  3. tecnicos

Winner: Tecnicos
Match Time: 11:19
Approx Rating: 87. Really nicely laid on and well worked. Would've liked some more time, but on the upper end of expectations.
Other Match Notes: In something that was certainly Maximo's idea, the tecnicos team are all wearing white dress shirts and pink ties. Rudos all have black Guerrero t-shirts (in the style of the Guerreros Del Ring magazine) and are wearing black tights. They've got blended masks too. Sangre oddly has red shin guards/kick pads. Tecnicos are also also wearing dark colors, but Maximo still has his pink going.  We don't get to see the entrances before the match. Doesn't seem that Sangre usually gets to be captain, but maybe there's a plan.

First fall is all mat wrestling, at least to start. Sangre/Texano have a good bit, and Sagrado/Nitro are fine. Maximo really does the generic armdragging open, and Dr. X ends up beating him violently. Texano and Sagrado rush to protect their partner, the rudos rush to met them, and a pier six brawl breaks out. The rudos end up taking out the tecnicos with dives - Dr. X with a tope con giro from the apron on Maximo, Nitro with a slingshot tope con giro on Sagrado. Sangre drops Sagrado with a heel kick and sets him up for a figure four - and Sagrado reverse it to a small package. That's a bad plan!

After a break, rudos get ticked off at the last finish and bum rush the tecnicos. Beatdown is on. Good team work, with Nitro visibly calling the shots and keeping his team on track and organized. They've got a bit a trouble holding Maximo upside down for dropkicks, but end up finishing him with everyone taking a turn doing sentons. He's the captain, though they don't seem to realize and beat up Texano. He gets the questionably low dropkick. Referees know what's going on and properly could call for a DQ here, but don't. Rudos go all the way thru to the triple pose submission.

CLIP. Lots of crowd shots. And then replays like normal. So huh.

Nitro rallies the troops to start the third fall. Texano comes in to face them, and they tease a one on one, but the rudos end up rushing him. Nice sequence follows. They do as good a job as I've seen at teasing the comeback spot, and then taking it way from Texano before he can actually turn the tide. Dr. X even gets a near fall on Texano, but Sagrado breaks it up with a legdrop. That at least allows Texano to get out, and Nitro and Sagrado take over with neat falls. Sagrado gests 2 on a back bridge cover. Sagrado gives Nitro a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, and out he goes. Sangre in - and he takes a tilt-a-whirl gutbuster! Sagrado flips it over for a back breaker and cover, but Dr. X break that pin up. Maximo in, the rare color in this match. Maximo does the normal Maximo bit, getting the second rope butt bump for two. Dr. X gives him a Nightmare on Dr. X 's Street for two. Corner whip, reversed, Maximo chest slaps Dr. X in the corner and then whips in Texano for a clothesline. Dr. X is set up top, but he knocks Texano down when he climbs up after. Overcast! He seriously is a Helms fan. One two NO. Texano gets a side slam, and he's going up. Moonsault connects! one two three! Hadn't noticed it before, but Texano's got a armbar with his days' name on it. You can see it well here. He's fire dup and takes on the other two - superkick for Nitro, clothesline for Sangre.. Rana on Nitro is blocked, and Sangre dropkicks him while he's upside. double crab, and and Texano gives! Nitro and Sangre do the huddle dance. Next elimination wins it! Wait, do the rudos not realize that Texano's not the captain?  Nitro goes to pose, and Sangre's surprised by Maximo - bodyscissors roll, one two NO! Nitro back paying attention and slapping Maximo. He holds him in a full nelson, Sangre's running kick connects - with Nitro. Sangre off the ropes, into a fireman's carry and slammed down. Maximo holds him down for Sagrado - springboard splash one two th-NO! Sagrado can't believe that's not a three and argues it with a ref. Meanwhile, Maximo tries a clothesline on Sangre, Sangre ducks, and Nitro trips up Maximo from the outside. Nitro kneels and watches from the apron. Sagrado on Sangre, chop, whip, reverse, Sangre dropkicks him out. Nitro up - slingshot TOPE barely makes it; Nitro kinda got caught in the ropes on the way over, but made it. Maximo and Sangre left in. Sangre's right blocked, Sangre's left blocked, right kick caught and spun, Sangre goes with it and clotheslines down Maximo. Whip, reversed, Maximo with a quick drop toe hold and a seated rocking horse. Is that it? Sangre's in trouble - he gives! Tecnicos win! Maximo, Texano and Sagrado become the 27th champions.

Tecnicos have a big celebration, Texano carrying Maximo around. They're thrilled beyond belief. Rudos try protesting it, but it's not going happen. They stick around to show the belts being awarded, which is neat. Texano points to his armband, and they get a nice zoom in it. Nitro gets the microphone, gives the new champions credit for winning, but promises this isn't over. Which is good - this was pretty fun.

Match 2: Universo 2000 (c), Rey Bucanero, Pierroth vs Perro Aguayo Jr. (c), Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila
Arena Mexico, 10/07/05

  1. Perros
  2. Perros

Winner: Perros (2-0)
Match Time: 10:11
Approx Rating: Rey and Aguila had nice spots, but I'm sure you can get those elsewhere.
Other Match Notes:
Perros enter first, individually. When Universo's music plays, it's La Nazi who walks onto the stage - and Universo's team attacks the Perros from behind. Quick to the break.

1: Complete Capos beatdown. They pass up chances to win - including Rey landing the Buca storm, and end up getting called for a DQ when Universo uses the steps on Perro (in the ring - out of the ring is fine, I guess.) Not that this stops them from stomping him for a while longer.

2: So, the beatdown keeps going. Aguila does a back flip over a double clothesline to get the comeback spot, and the beatdown goes the other way. Again, decent beatdown, with them doing pinning moves and other beating to pin. Rey makes a mini comeback, though the match just sorta gets chaotic. Bucanero works in a monkey flip over the corner tope con giro, which is neat. Aguila tries top with his corner tope con giro. La Nazi lurks on the ramp with something behind her back, while Universo gets a near fall on Perro following something we didn't see. There had to be a clip here, because the ref's taken a bump as well. Anyway, Nazi passes Universo the big foil pipe, Perro trips him, takes it for himself, and uses it on Universo for the pin. Straight falls. Perro points out that his proves he's better. Pierroth retorts. And back and forth.

Vignette: Gabriel Pereyera and Mistico talk about how great each other is. There's Gabriel scoring and wearing the mask, and again.

Match 3: Atlantis (c), Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy vs Mistico (c), El Hijo del Santo, Dr. Wagner Jr.
Arena Mexico, 10/07/05

  1. rudos
  2. tecnicos
  3. rudos

Winner: Rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:47
Approx Rating: 83. Fun, but wasn't enough here to live up the potential of those involved.
Other Match Notes:
And Pereyera is here with Mistico too. Mistico's wearing a Cruz Azul jersey. Dr. Wagner Jr. has a toddler Dr. Wagner Jr. with him. He seems kinda put out by the whole thing. Guerreros have the valets carry out a big Guerreros del Atlántida banner. I thought Atlantis was acting really goofy here, like he'd been hanging out with Tarzan Boy too much, and then I realized it was Tarzan Boy in an Atlantis mask. Obviously. It's sorta half Ultimo have Atlantis. Rudos immediately attack the tecnicos. Surprising that Mistico is captain, but I make too much of that.

1: First fall is rudo beatdown. Super high flapjack on Mistico, check. Press slam to the outside, check. Pereyera got a front row seat for his buddy being thrown right on top of him. Wagner's put thru the wring, and then Mistico and Santo are tied up by the arms, sat down, rolled onto their heads, and back bridged pins by Atlantis and Ultimo. They're pushing the tag feud oh so subtly. Beating goes thru the break.

2: Atlantis finally gets around to beating up Que Monito as the second fall starts. Beatdown on the tecnicos still continues. Mistico sidesteps a corner charge and and backflips over a double clothesline to start the comeback. This is standard stuff, and not quite good enough to make you forget this is standard stuff. I'd like to see them do a bit more. After everything's' reset on the outside for a second, Santo and Ultimo get simultaneous pins off an up an over sunset flip and a double underhook powerbomb. Mistico chased Atlantis all the way to the entrance when Atlantis didn't want anything with him. Atlantis manages to get around Mistico, and attacks Mistico on the steps. Atlantis walks down the stage to go away, and of course Mistico dives off the platform on him with a plancha. Atlantis races in the ring to get away, and raves out to get away from Wagner. Ultimo and Tarzan are finally able to block off the tecnicos and keep him safe. Replays.

3: Captains start the third fall. I want the Mexico futbol/Wagner mask jersey that kid has. We spend a lot of time starting at that, and just come back to the action in time to see Atlantis sneak attack Mistico. Guerreros approve. Whip, clothesline misses, and Atlantis back with a suspending rana. Atlantis runs into the a drop toe hold, and there's the 619. Atlantis ripped Mistico's mask, so Mistico teases it, and does the same. Mistico backs up to the ropes, and charges - into the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Mistico rallies up with the support of the crowd, charge, tilt-a-whirl, but he lands on his feet. I guess he dropkicked Atlantis out - we were looking at the futbol guy again - and Mistico meets him there with a tope. Atlantis about falls in the futbol player's lap. Wagner and Tarzan in. Wagner's eye and mouth holes are outlined in heavy black, and it makes the mask look quite different. Replays of Mistico's dive, and we resume live action with Tarzan punching Wagner down. Whip, reverses, Wagner drop down, Tarzan over, awkward pause, waved by, into a powerslam/backdrop. Not sure. Kick to the spine, that's pretty sure. Corner whip, Tarzan runs up the corner and comes back with a twisting plancha, but Wagner's out of the way. Dropkick to the head is spot on. Something went on with Atlantis and Monito, because Monito's not walking off. Meanwhile, Wagner got caught in a spinebuster. Tarzan takes time to pose. Off the ropes, backdrop, and he's taking the long way to the floor. Wagner starts running for a dive, and Ultimo cuts him off with a back elbow, but Santo's in to replace his partner immediately. Wagner wants a world with Ultimo though, so Santo lets him stay in. Ultimo gives him chest slaps, and we actually miss Wagner's looking at the crowd. Now he's ready to tag Santo. Ultimo corners Santo and brings Tarzan in. Corner whip, Tarzan whipped in and eats boots. Santo gets the double armdrag and headscissors on the rudos, and an accidentally boosted up dropkick on Tarzan. Spinning armdrag sends Ultimo out (and right into a photographer too close, oops. ) Santo quickly up after him - plancha! Wagner ramp tope con giro on Tarzan! Back down to the captains, and they're fired up. Mistico off the ropes, tossed up, and Atlantis low blow uppercuts him on the way down. One two three! Baby Richard was watching the dives and missed it. Atlantis yanks Mistico's mask all the way down - he's concealing his face, or he'd be done. Lots of reaction shots of Gabriel, who doesn't really react much. Well, not compared to Mistico. Atlantis decides he'd like to rip up Mistico's mask some more - he actually yanks it off and takes it with him as a trophy. Break.

Replays. That's it.
