10/06: Pena, AAA

Video of Televisa Deportes on Antonio Pena’s death is up on youtube

Ovaciones has a Antonio Pena bio. They don’t list a cause of death, but do mention he recently had knee operations, and was hospitalized in Los Angeles and Monterrey at different times in recent weeks. Ovaciones gives Pena a lot of credit for the Rayo de Jalisco vs Cien Caras mask match (full Arena Mexico sell out with more than 3000 people outside the building), and for the gimmick created of guys such as Octagon, La Parka, Mascara Sagrada, Alebrije, Pentagon, los Vipers and Black Family.

La Aficion also has an article on Pena’s death and life. Referee Copetes is mentioned as the one who informed the wrestlers. Copetes seems to indicate it was an issue with his lungs here.

AAA’s has not updated their website, nor would I expect them to.

They actually found out about Pena’s death during this match, and at least Charly Manson and referee Tropicasas were seen crying during it.

non AAA news: Black Warrior has an interview with Ovaciones, talking about the mask loss. He puts the blame for his loss on overconfidence – he thought he had the match won multiple times during the final fall, and never thought for a second he’d lose his mask. Mistico will pay for taking Warrior’s mask in blood, every time they meet. Black Warrior appreciates the postive reaction from the fans after losing his mask, but has no plans to turn tecnico. Outside of making Mistico’s life miserable till the day one of them retires, Black Warrior’s goal is to get into WWE in the next year.

Lucha Times

AAA on Gala: Porky and Scorpio Jr. in a bull terrier match, semifinals of the dream tournament. TNA guys are NEXT week.

What’s great about Galavision is they posted a lot of new articles to thier lucha libre page, and they’re all CMLL or WWE related, neither of which actually airs on the channel at all. (I’m sure the web folks are just making due with what they’re given.)

CAN52/FSE: I think we should be back to mostly Coliseo stuff, but I never actually heard what aired in Mexico on Televisa last week, so I guess anything’s possible. Anyway, intentionally or not, I think we may have a better idea of which of this shows is mejor – the B+ show is the one getting the first Mistico vs unmasked Black Warrior match.

CMLL on FSE is way late (3 AM EST) in the evening due to baseball playoff games, some of which may or may not take place on that day, and I have no idea what that would do to the schedule. I’d suggest taping the normal slot too if you can, just in case.

There’s no lucha libre show listed on the FSE schedule next week. This may be a baseball thing, or it may be something else. Who knows.

PBS: the “Mexico: One Plate At A Time” cooking show on lucha libre looks to be repalying next week – check your local listings.

10/05: Coliseo, Niebla

5) La Parka AAA, Hombre Sin Miedo, Intocable vs Escorpio Negro, Chessman, Alan Stone

Not sure if Niebla has joined AAA or is just working as indepedent here. Haven’t heard about the AAA taping last night, but I guess we’d know more about that.

10/04: Guadalajara, Electroshock

I think Box Y Lucha had the best cover of the 4 this week. Nice time to break away from their usual style. If you look to the left, the ref is wearing Ref Cam goggles.

CMLL (SUN) 10/01 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara Results
1) Estrella de Jalisco b Fraile de la Muerte
2) Carlo Roggi, Golden b Depredador, Valentin Mayo
3) Conflictus, Super Maquina b El Gallo, Tony Rivera
4) Metro II, Stuka Jr. b Hijo de Pierroth, Toxico
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Rayman b Olimpico, Pierroth, Tarzan Boy
6) Rey Bucanero b Ultimo Guerrero [CMLL LH]
Main event was said to be good. Clean finish.

Electroshock may have jumped back to CMLL again. This makes me very sad. I wonder if he’ll face the Guerreros in this debut match again?

There was a broadcast of the CMLL Anniversary show at Arena Queretaro as well.

El Diario has an article about the trademarking the identities of famous Mexicans. They talk to El Hijo del Santo and Blue Demon Jr. about marketing their families’ names.

Satanico’s Manson has a poster Luchas 2000, showing the 1998 CMLL Cibernetico Gym class at the time – guys who were training at the CMLL gym at the time. Lots of people looking much younger. Maybe it’s just the photo, Sangre Azteca looks like he’s on a hunger strike.

Robert’s reviewed the Anniversary show here, but I’m avoiding it. Go to his site and respond there – he’d like it, and I’m attempting to watch it tonight without reading another review first.

Guerreros del Ring #55 has Black Warrior unmasked (but more Mistico with Black Warrio’s mask.)

El Halcon #71 is up!
– Interview with Universo 2000. He’s hoping someone challenges him for the heavyweight title soon. ME TOO. He’s got a (?) son and daughters, and would be honored if anyone would carry on his name like is happening with his brothers. We really need a women to do a Hija de whatever gimmick.
– Ocampo’s Arena Mexico recap
– Q&A with Loco Max. This is a treat. He got paid 10 pesos for his first match, and claims to have received 1 million pesos for one match. Loco Max, who’s the best rudo? “Everyone.” Which arena is the best? “All of them.” Who are the best fans? “All of them.” Who are the best promoters? “Everyone who paid me.” Way to take a stand! What’s your favorite key (hold)? “The one that opens the door to my house.” Uh huh. Who’s Loco Max’s favorite foreigner? Osama Bin Laden. He owns SIXTY FIVE cars. His favorite thing in the world is this particular interview! The worst thing in the world is when this particular interview is over. Loco Max hopes to live a long time, because death is scary.
– Arena Queretaro Results
indy (SUN) 09/24 Arena Queretaro Results
1) Galaxi b Dark Boy
2) Jaguar & Cometa Negra b Halcon de Fuego, Neurosis II
3) Lince I, Lince II b Zain, Principe Valiente Jr.
4) Mr. Rebelde, Hooligan b Star Tron, Neurosis I
5) Drabek I, Drabek II, Perro del Ring b Leono, Fabian el Gitano, Ursus
– Interview with Mini Violencia. This is why I love El Halcon – you get everyone. Mini Violencia likes the idea of mixed matches, because fighter must be prepared for anything – even a guy challenging you in the street. Mini Violencia thinks he was much too overconfident going into his mask match, what with all the Boricuas behind him, and Mini Olimpico took advantage. But that was just one fight, and he hopes to one day win the war over Mini Olimpico. Mini Violencia talks about being part of the WWE’s Junior’s Division, which I barely remember.
– Recap of the Santo vs Black Shadow mask match. This match went seventy minutes, which is about how long how all of the matches at the anniversary ended up going.

Full lineups for this week are below. Titles are being defended! (but just the women’s ones.)
