Lucha Times

AAA on Gala: Split feed. The beginning of the dream tournament.

CMLL on CANAL52/FSE: I’ve got a feeling the Averno/Negro stuff is going to Fox Sports (because they’re newer) – the Mistico match is going to the other location.

Should have some more TV related stuff to post tommorow.

09/13: Coliseo, Guadalajara, IWRG, Halcon

CMLL (TUE) 09/12 Arena Coliseo Results [ova, magazinecmll]
1) Artillero, Soberano Jr. b Flash, Super Nova
2) Apocalipsis, Ramstein, Super Comando b Leono, Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico
3) Mascara Purpura, Stuka Jr., Tony Rivera b Arkangel, Hooligan, Loco Max
4) Eclipse, Hijo de Pierroth, Pierroth b Sagrado, Satanico, Virus
Eclipse replaced Emilio. That’s a downgrade. Anyway, Sagrado tried to dive on Pierroth, Pierroth just moved out of the way, and that was the end of Sagrado. Both CMLL and Ovaciones describe the situation as “dramatic”, so it must’ve been pretty bad. He was taken to the infirmary, but eventually left the arena under his own power.
5) Averno, Mephisto, Olimpico DQ Dos Caras Jr., Mistico, Negro Casas
As a build up to Sunday, Averno low blowed Negro Casas

AULL (WED) 09/06 Arena Lopez Mateos Results [KrisZ]
1) Cicloncito Ramirez, Hormiga Atomica b Pequeno Demonio, Pequeno Rebelde
2) Super Nova b Psicopata [AULL Light, torneo, qf]

1) Imposter b Thunder Boy
2) Valentin Mayo b Estrella de Jalisco
3) Infierno b Exterminador
4) Makabre b Guero Loco
5) Mascara Magica, Toxico b El Gallo, Leon Blanco
6) Volador Jr. b Misterioso II
Rayman and Hijo de Cien Caras, as seconds, fought with each other during this. Match was quite well received, with money being thrown in the ring after it was ever.
7) Atlantis, Black Warrior, Damian 666 b Blue Panther, Hijo de Lizmark, Texano Jr.

IWRG (SUN) 09/10 Arena Neza Results [KrisZ, IWRG]
1) Gran Cuchillo Jr. b Shuriken

indy (SUN) 09/17 Arena Mexico de San Luis Lineup [el sol de SLP]
3) Lover Boy, Super Light, Danys Boy vs Flechador, Cazador, Mensajero I, Mensajero II
4) Nieto del Saato, Muerte Sagrada, Rayo de Plata Jr. vs el Hijo del Espanto, Conde Bartock, Halcon Dorado Jr.

I’m 95% sure that Nieto del Santo isn’t Axxel. Nieto was introduced on AAA TV, I figure, to get him going before he debuts in Arena Mexico, and I would think he’d be working in smaller places for the time being for the same reasons.

the many ways I don’t get Mexico: AAA has a 5 paragraph news update about the stamp collection dealio, as if people are going be rushing to their local newstands to collect rare 2 cm by 2 cm pictures of Picudo and need to know everything about them. In the last paragraph, they throw in “we’re also going to do Best of AAA DVDs with Televisa.” THAT could use some more details – there’s a wide range of possibilities about what a “Best of AAA” DVD could look like, for one. Since there are no specifics, I wouldn’t hold my breath for this one.

AAA’s updated it’s VdE preview to mention that Christy Hemme is off the card, to be replaced by – someone. This will have no impact on attendance. This means they’ve got mystery wrestlers in three different matches (Exterme Tiger’s spot in the 4 way atomicos match and the main event), and they’ll probably still need a replacement for Ron Killings.

A new El Halcon is up, #69
– Interview with Mephisto and Averno. They’re hoping to get another shot at the tag team titles; they were due to, but Negro got hurt. (This must’ve been done before the Middleweight shot came up.) They figure on continuing to feud with Satancio on some level, because you learn a lot from fighting guys like Satanico, Blue Panther, and Atlantis, and get to show what you’ve learned already. Apparently Santo said some nice things about Avenro & Mephisto, and they’re happy to hear such things from a greatly important guy. Averno & Mephisto say they’re booked in September for shows in Detroit, Chicago, and LA. They may be going to Japan in October. Mephisto feels like he’s a much better fighter than he was as Rey Astro, and hopes to equal or surpass the success of Kahoz (his father.) Averno feels like he’s just continuning on the path he started as Rencor Latino.
– Recap from 09/05 Arena Queretaro

CMLL (TUE) 09/05 Arena Queretaro Results
1) Dr. Karonte b Lince
2) Drabek I, Drabek II b Fuego Latino, Zain
3) Ursus, Virus b Loco Max, Makabro
Virus replaced Mascara Purprua
4) Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V b Negro Navarro, Signo, Texano Jr.
Usual ‘classic lucha’ battle, with Texano taking the loss and thanking his partners for allowing him to team with them
5) Black Warrior, Ultimo Guerrero b Maximo, Mistico
Maximo replaced the injuried-at-the-time Bucanero. Mistico went for La Mistica on Warrior and got fouled.

– Bio of Rey Cometa. Mostly stuff we knew – he was trained in Queretaro, he joined AAA and feuding with Los Diablocs for a while, and then his Queretaro rival Kaoma Jr.
– Recap of a CMLL show from 09/30 in Celeya.

CMLL CCE (WED) 08/30 Celaya Results
1) Gallito Colorado, Silver Boy b Amazonas, Radio Activo
2) Ozuno, Urusa b Macabro, Perro del Ring
3) Amapola, Hiroka b India Sioux, Lady Apache
This MAY be Hiroka’s first outside of a title match (and off TV) since she won the thing. And, in fact, Amapola was the one who got the big pinfall on Lady Apache. I wonder she challenged for a title match, just because it’s part of the routine.
4) Maximo, Texano Jr., Volador Jr. b Head Hunter I, Head Hunter II, Hijo de Pierroth
The immigration police showed up backstage to get the rudos! Apparently this was legimiate, and the Head Hunters had the right papers (and Hijo de Pierroth explained he was indeed not from Puerto Rico.)
5) Canek, Mascara Sagrada, Silver King DQ Mascara Ano 2000, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000
Universo fouled Silver King.
– Centurion Negro bio. Centurion Negro boxed for two years at a gym, but never actually competed in a match. This seems dumb to me. Of course, the usual dealio followed where someone told him he could do better in lucha.
– Article about the Mil Mascara vs el Halcon mask vs mask match in 1977. They say that 21,000 people came to Arena Mexico to see this match – was that even possible, before they had the structural problems? Fans were divided over in support.

09/11: Coliseo

CMLL (SUN) 09/10 Arena Coliseo Results
1) Molotov, Valiente b Soberano Jr., Zayco
Soberano got hurt and carried out
2) Arkangel, Hooligan, Loco Max b Stuka Jr., Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico
3) Hijo del Pierroth, Hombre Sin Nombre, Sangre Azteca b Felino, Mascara Purprua, Maximo
4) Averno, Mephisto, Olimpico b Heavy Metal, Negro Casas, Satanico
5) Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Mistico DQ Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Aguila, Terrible
Aguila accidently pulled Mistico’s mask, and that might have actually been an accident, because they restarted the match so they could do the scheduled Perro/Mistico finish. Perro’s low blow got blocked twice, Mistico’s did not, and so Mistico’s team won the restarted fall too.

The 4th match did indeed produce a Averno vs Negro Casas title match for next week, and I’m thrilled at the possiblity. It’ll air on one of the two shows; which ever one gets this build up trios match for sure.

Box Y Lucha posted some articles
– Groon XXX gives his education opinion of Gronda II: Sucks. Groon notes that if Gronda II was any good, he would’ve gotten over with his last three gimmicks. Groon says we havent’ been seeing him only because we’re not doctors – he’s had operations to his chest, foot (taking the rod out), wrists, nose, and ears. Oh no, I really should read these things before I start writing about them: (translated)

I will appear in the anniversary of the free fight, in Arena Mexico, the 29 of September. We will be a good season in that great scene.

(noooooooooooooooooo)

Anyway, Groon says he’s a more mature man demon after going thru the operations, and a better worker to boot. (Right.)

– Box Y Lucha also gets Gronda II’s side. Gronda says all credit is due to god Antonio Pena, and he’s obviously the better Gronda since he doesn’t get hurt all the time. Gronda II: “I am more brain the muscle.” Anyway, the public will decide which one is better.
– Electroshock is angry at you for daring to suggest he would leave AAA. He loves AAA, the Vipers is the best group ever in the history of anything, blah blah blah
– Interview with Jaque Mate about his career and his mask loss to Octagon. He admits Octagon was better than him on that day.
– Rambo story time. He talks about referees Roberto Rangel and Eddie Palau. Once, in an Arena Coliseo match, he accidentally socked Palau. Ringo beat his opponent before Palau recovered, and Roberto was about to give him in the match when Eddie Palau ran back in took him down. Palau was about to beat Rambo with his belt, but Roberto stepped in the way and took the blow for him.
– Obituary for Enrique Llanes, who died in September 2004. They tell the famous story about Llanes facing Santo in a mask match and losing, but the fans letting him off without having to lose his hair. When he arrived at his mom’s house after the match, she made him cut his hair anyway.

AAA & Televisa are teaming up to sell AAA stamps, in a ‘collect them all’ sort of thing. Each stamp is $0.27 – couldn’t tell how they’re actually selling them – and they’re going to put out 179 of them, plus 15 special ones and a book to put them all in. The article mentions it’s one of many merchandising things Televisa is talking about doing with AAA (kinda like the CMLL/WB stuff, I would guess.)

Black Terry has his usual video highlights from the Toryumon/Ultimo Dragon Gym/whatever show this past weekend at youtube. Haven’t seen results.

Lucha Va Voom is running another show in LA on 10/24, 10/25 and 10/26. They’re promising an all minis battle royal. (Thanks to mike informer)

The current listed match for Congress Theatre on 09/24 is Santo & Mistico vs Averno & Mephisto. The show is 12 days away, but I refuse to take this seriously until next Monday. (Thanks to Dr. Keith.)

Next Year’s WON HOF eligible

Just before I forget about this for a year, I thought I should bring up the new nominees for next year, because there are quite a few lucha names on the new list.

– Gran Hamada: I’ve seen maybe 3 Gran Hamada matches in my life, and have no valid opinion
– Vampiro: probably won’t go in, probably in the middle of too much stuff right now to have a permanent opinion here
– Karloff Lagarde Jr.: I assume it’s Jr. (he just turned 35 last year), but Dave has it listed as “Karloff Lagrade”, and adding a guy who was a big star in the 60s to the list with no explanation is just weird.
– Universo 2000: I think there were be a vocal minority for Universo, but the general perception of him is so strongly negative, they’re kinda wasting their time.
– “Rey Mysterio”: again, I think this is Jr. If it is, it’s a no doubter for me (and Rey Sr. has a strong case as a trainer, I guess.)
– “Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero”: this is five years too soon for either guy, clearly. As singles and trending towards the future, Ultimo’s on an arc to make it and Rey’s not (but, again, it’s far too soon). As a team, I’d like to see Tarzan included as well (and I know I’m the only one), but it’s mostly meaningless since very few teams get in as teams. They’re not getting in and I’m not sure if I’d vote for them, but I worry that getting swept off the ballot quick will hurt them when they get back on the ballot more deservingly around 2011.

(Non-lucha names include the Dudley Boys, Satoshi Kojima, the Rock and Rob Van Dam. One name on that list is getting in for sure.)

09/11: lineups

I would like to talk about news today. But there is no news. We really need to put together a fund to either get Alexis to go back to his blog, or get someone to do his website for him so he can update is like he used to, because I so miss getting timely CMLL Coliseo results.

Speaking of websites – AAA’s started to remove references to Shocker on it’s website – his profile is unlinked (though still on the website), and the bio for Guapos U doesn’t mention him ever having been a member, though his picture is still on it. (They didn’t remove mentions of Zumbido, fwiw.) He’s also still listed on the VdE card.

Magazine round up.
Box Y Lucha #2783 features Warrior vs Mistico. Box Y Lucha is supposed to redo their website in October, which means we’ll get one good week of updates.
Super Luchas #178 features Warrior vs Mistico
Luchas 2000 #334 features Warrior vs Mistico (and Porky vs Scorpio and shirtless Mark Jindrak)

There are photos of the RXLL show on the box y lucha forum.

I’m actually going to be in close proximity to my GdR recording this evening, so perhaps some recaps will finally get done. Stay tuned.

Lineup notes
– AAA’s big TV taping is this Sunday. No word about any of the mystery person yet.
– Mistico vs Black Warrior is headlining Guadalajara this week, and probably will headline a lot of places for the next few weeks. I wonder if Black Warrior is coming to Chicago?
– Nothing really big on the CMLL DF shows so far. They likely set up a special main event for next Sunday’s Arena Coliseo show, but no results and nothing seems really obvious there. Friday’s show starts an hour early due to Mexican Indepdence Day festivities.
– IWRG’s having an interesting week. Thursday sees the debut of Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., who was just introduced a couple weeks ago in the lucha magazines. Of course, he’s starting in the main event. (YAY NEPOTISM) Sunday has a random cage of death match, with a couple of names and someone like Enterrador 2000 taking the loss.
– AULL’s got a GdA vs Dragon/Mistico/Rey main, and the decision match for the AULL Lightweight – apparently last week’s cibernetico was just to select the winner. I wish we could get more consistent results here.

09/10: Accion highlights, Gala

CMLL: Mistico vs Black Warrior. Shocking, I know. Warrior doing a dive, Mistico doing a dive, Warrior getting a fall over Mistico, Warrior dropkicking Mistico in the face, La Mistica, illustration of the lightning like pain.

AAA: Muerte Cibernetica vs La Parka Jr. (presumably for the GWPC World Monster X Championship) Slightly different style. You might find this hard to believe, but there seemed to be outside interference (from Chessman, who was playing is straight as far as we could see.). Muerte Cibernetico thought he had Parka pinned for three on a leg lock hold, Hijo de Tirantes agreed to disagree, and Muerte ended up clocking him with a chair. Pepe Casas came out to help and got knocked down. While Muerte went to work over Hijo de Tirantes some more, Pepe Casas awarded La Parka Jr. the match. Way to prioritize, Banderas.

Gala did air the scheduled episode.
