09/16: Mexico, GdR

CMLL (FRI) 09/15 Arena Mexico Results [Ocampo
1) Mini Damian 666, Mini Halloween b Pequeno Olimpico, Ultimo Dragoncito
2) Dark Angel, India Sioux, Lady Apache b Hiroka, La Nazi, Princesa Sujei
Lady Apache’s turned to challenge Hiroka for a title shot. Sounds like we might actually get that match next week.
3) La Mascara, Maximo, Volador Jr. b Hombre Sin Nombre, Ohara, Okumura
4) Dos Caras Jr., Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Dragon DQ Alex Koslov, Kenzo Suzuki, Marco Corelone
Corelone pulled Dos’ mask, and that was the end of that. 2 Falls.
5) Hector Garza, Perro Aguayo Jr., Shocker b Olimpico, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero
Ocampo’s been down on Shocker the last couple of weeks, but said he looked back for real here.
6) Mistico b Atlantis [LdP, Final]
Black Warrior tried to interfere, but failed. No one has succesfully defended this title.

Guerreros del Ring is airing
* Coliseo 09/10: Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Mistico DQ Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Aguila, Terrible
* Mexico 09/08: Atlantis, Kenzo Suzuki, Ultimo Guerrero b Dr. Wagner Jr., Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Dragon
* Alfonso Dantes profiled

That’s a bit random.

Gala is airing the scheduled AAA episode.

This Brian Lee is a masked man ‘from China’, theoritcally related to Bruce Lee, like Bobby Lee.

BOTH women challenged Hiroka for a title shot. This is quite the running joke.

Joe Slick got Harry Potter chants.

RXLL’s second taping is tonight. No word on matches, but the same basic group of names are listed as particpating, and I believe Teddy Hart has been mentioned as coming in.

Guerreros del Ring Special #2 focuses on tattoos. I’m not into them, but that is a cool cover.

Today’s the start of Hispanic Heritage Month (09/15 – 10/15) and so lucha libre related exhibitions will likely be popping up here and there. In San Antonio, the public libraries will be exhibiting Xavier Garza’s Lucha Libre art for the month.

You’d think we’d get some more info on the anniversary card tonight, but I’m not holding my breath.

TV and TV

(recaps are below. news is much much later.)

I haven’t linked to recaps elsewhere this week, because I’ve been kinda waiting for them to turn up. Victor’s done a lot in the meantime

AAA from this past weekend. I do like how a match with broken light bulbs ends with a fake low blow. Except the like part.
CMLL on FSE, or what aired of it.
CMLL from 08/05/06. Yay Santo.

Meanwhile, Robert’s given into my demands and actually watched the Chicago Lucha, at least DVD 2. When he watches the first match on the first DVD, he’ll thank me. Anyway, since Robert says the match was one the most entertaining matches he’s seen this year, I’m going to start loudly proclaiming my “I saw this lucha tag match and the ROH/Dragon trios match and enjoyed the lucha match more”, and see how long it takes until people think I’m awesome.

(I should totally rip this match and put it up, but I don’t want to take money of people’s pockets, even if they won’t put it in. MAYBE after this Mistico show, which they better be taping.)

Anyway, you should already know this stuff if out there. If you don’t already visit either of these sites, you can now see a list of latest posts on those blogs under the Lucha Elsewhere on the side bar. (RSS is great, and I may make up RSS for rudopolis just because that’s the kind of thing I do.

db addition: I’ve added Last 5 Matches On TV to the profile cards. It’s been there for some days and no one’s noticed, but I thought I should point it out.

It’s not completely accurate at this point; you can see which shows I’ve indexed here; I’ll add it to the sidebar when it’s better. I hope to eventually integrate that more into the other stuff; full lists of every known time a wrestler made air (in a match, at least) are for sure, links on the event listings point back to the episode aired are probably, wacky w-l records that take up too much CPU time are quite likely. The next step from here is linking in recaps, so at some point in future, you’ll be able to click on a profile and find some reviews of what people think about him (if I get to it.)

Anyway, I’ll probably first try to build TV indexes going back to 2004. It doesn’t seem a hard idea for CMLL (though if someone knows what aired on 07/29, that’d be nice), but AAA’s going to be next to impossible since almost everyone lists them by their taping date instead of the air date. I’ll be doing IWRG and the satellite shows, and maybe the Guadalajara stuff, but I don’t think anything else. Does this sound like a good idea to anyone else?

GdR #40, #41, #42

08/26: This was the tournament show. Texano and Heavy Metal enjoyed this far more than you did.

09/02: The main event was exactly the not-fun you thought it might be.

09/09: Now here, the main event was pretty good. I’m now noticing we’ve got Metal on every single episode – perhaps that’s how they do it!

I should start on FSE episodes tommorrow.

09/14: on PPV?

There’s a lot of talk on lucha boards that the 09/29 Anniversary show will be shown on PPV. That seems pretty likely to me, and I’m sure we won’t be seeing the Mistico/Black Warrior match on the normal TV show regardless. Two years ago, the four way mask match where Universo lost was held off TV (and advertised as such), only airing on the year end Best Of show. Last year’s anniversary match did air, but that was the triangle hair match where they were pushing off the Perro/Universo match some more. Mistico/Black Warrior is the blowoff to the biggest feud of the year so far (at least in CMLL), so it figured CMLL would want to collect a bit on it.

Previous CMLL PPVs
(I’m the impression that the Palacio de la Desportes shows were non-CMLL promoters using CMLL talent)
03/17/2000: Atlantis vs Villano III [mask], with a cibernetico and Ricky Marvin vs Sangre Azteca on the undercard. The ’00s equivalent to When World’s Collide – major lucha show everyone ought to have seen.
09/04/2000: Villano II & Perro Aguayo vs Mascara Ano 2000 & Pierroth Jr. in a cage of death match; losers advance cibernetico (Rencor Latino defeats Hijo del Gladiator for his mask)
12/15/2000: Perro Aguayo vs Cien Caras [hair], Rey Bucanero & Ultimo Guerrero vs Santo & Negro Casas [CMLL TAG]
03/30/2001: Universo 2000 vs Perro Aguayo [mask, hair, Perro’s retirement], Satanico/Shocker/Black Warrior vs Ultimo/Rey/Tarzan, Safari/Olimpico/Niebla vs Fuerza/Signo/Panther [MEX TRIOS]
09/28/2001: Infernales vs Infernales [cage of death, for the name]
12/14/2001: Tarzan Boy vs Brazo de Plata [hair], Shocker vs Emilio Charles Jr. [hair], Nicho/Juvi/Halloween/Damien vs Santo/Negro/HsN (Rayman)/Rey Misterio Jr.
03/17/2002: Gran Markus Jr. vs Veneno [hair, mask], Panther/Fuerza/Wagner vs Antifaz/Warrior/Niebla [CMLL TRIOS]

Buyrate information never was released nor otherwise passed to the general public, as far as I know. At the time they stopped running PPVs, it was thought there were not enough people in Mexico who had access to PPV, and not enough of those were into buying PPVs. (That last show probably didn’t help the situation.)

I don’t see Mistico/Warrior on PPV – if this is a PPV
– being a turn back towards putting most of the major shows back on PPV, but a singular case of CMLL trying to extract the most money possible out of a hot feud.

OTOH, as Robert has pointed out elsewhere, if this is a big enough success, it could open up the doors to big matches which seem finically impossible now. As you recall, the reason we haven’t had Dr. Wagner losing his mask is there’s no way to make enough of money off Arena Mexico attendance to make both Wagner and CMLL happy with their cuts. If you add in PPV revenue, maybe that could do it.

I would not expect this to be on PPV in the United States or elsewhere outside of Mexico.

Tickets for this show actually went on sale yesterday, without a card being announced. (They do have a poster advertising Mistico vs Black Warrior.) That’s pretty rare for CMLL. I’d guess they’re still working on a deal with someone (Latin Lover?), and it says something to how hot things are that they can get away with it.

Damian was telling people at Arena Puebla that Halloween would be back in Arena Mexico next Friday.
