(warning: stastical analysis of wrestling ahead)
A couple of weeks, I was working on the IWRG roster, figuring out who belongs in which category. It’s actually either for that roster, because the split there is based on appearance frequency (regulars vs guests.) The CMLL and AAA rosters are split based on push level, and I’ve been thinking how to mathematically express the concept of push.
CMLL orders their matches based on relative importance of the participants, and I’ve thought that if I could just calculate where on a card a wrestler normally appears, I could approximate their push. This is what I’ve been doing by hand, but have a program do it for me would eliminate accidental biases – guys I remember being more important than they’ve been booked, guys I think should be booked stronger, etc.
(AAA does the same sort of card ordering, but is far less strict about it and I’m not sure the results would be as reliable. I may try it at a later time. US promotions, especially TV events, don’t really do card ordering.)
I’ve put together a simple sort of the database, looking at card position. I haven’t applied it to the roster yet, but the raw numbers are interesting.
Wrestlers are ranked by their average card position on CMLL Arena Coliseo and Arena Mexico shows over the last year. There’s a few small adjustments:
– Shows with 7 or more matches are thrown out (tournament shows can be inconsistent)
– Shows with a bonus 6th match have each match knocked down one position (the six match is “5”, the fifth match is “4”)
– Shows with only 4 matches have each match moved up one position (the main event remains 5, the semimain is 4)
In both cases, the 1st and 2nd matches are left alone.
– you must have wrestled 5 matches in the period to qualify
relative levels
4.5 – 5.0 – main eventers
3.5 – 4.5 – upper mid
2.5 – 3.5 – mid
1.5 – 2.5 – lower mid
1.0 – 1.5 – openers

It actually looks a lot more accurate than I thought I’d get; I was expecting to get more outliers. Rayo (who seems to be gone from the promotion except when they need a spare top guy for Coliseo) and Halloween (who was lower on the card till the big push for the hair mask) are the two guys up top who look a little off, but it’s a pretty fair representation of push level.
The one major change I’ve been considering is adjusting the Arena Coliseo shows down; they’re obviously of lesser importance, so maybe being in a match should be worth 10% left. A main event would be worth 4.5, opening the show would be worth 0.9, and some people might average under 1. I’ll have to play around with it a bit.
Negro’s 87 appearances means he’s wrestled in about 55% of the Arena Coliseo/Mexico shows the last year.

Cubs, this is way off topic but I found a lucha biography site:
http://rayoblack.mx.tripod.com/biografiasygaleriasdelasleyendasdelring/index.html
Thought you might be interested in checking it out. I don’t speak Spanish too well, so I don’t know what is being said.
AH. This would explain where the spanish bios that are being posted on the wiki are coming from. I figured people couldn’t be writing them on their own…
