GdR #28, GdR #29, AAA 05/20

GdR 06/03; Too much Rey, not enough Blanco and Metalico. this was actually up last week but I kept it a secret
GdR 06/10; hair match was disappionting.
AAA 05/20; 1 for 5 in matches; better or worse than you had figured?

By the way, the AAA recap length is the length I’d really like all my recaps to be.

By the way (2), MONOPOLY COLORS. It’s kinda awesome.

The aim is to get enough tommorow that I don’t hate the world when I post my lag list. I’m probably going after the AAA recaps first, because I’m watching most of it in fast forward, and it’s quick to finish that way.

I need to redo the AAA index, but I may have to do it in alternate way.

4) Lady Apache b Dark Angel [MEX WOMEN]
5) La Mascara b Misterioso II [MEX WELTER]

That result listed just due to disbelief about Lady Apache actually defending her title. And beating Dark Angel, even – it’s like culmination the CMLL feud that never quite occurred.

Slam has a good new interview with Fray Tormenta.

El Hijo del Diablo chats with Box Y Lucha today at 2.

Guerreros del Ring #40 cover is of Dark Angel.

Some lineup notes I didn’t get to yesterday
– No AAA TV taping this week.
– Marcela got her first rematch for the CMLL Women’s title in Puebla
– Sunday is the first time Mistico’s wrestled in either Arena Mexico or Coliseo since 06/02
– Fabian el Gitano, not Metro, is scheduled for Sunday. I guess the sponsorship ran out?
– Canek Jr. is working that show, as well as “Soberano”, who I presume is the Soberano Jr. from Arena Olimpico Coliseo Laguna, although there was also a el Hijo del Soberano around.
– Arena Coliseo Guadalajara, which was sounded like it was having problems before, is now booking Blue Demon Jr. and stakes matches quite a bit of late.
– IWRG is now running 3 Arenas on Sunday.

06/19: quick Triplemania, Coliseo results

There’s your big Triplemania surprise. I guess we all had the wrong definition of ‘big’. I wonder where this leaves El Brazo (who I thought Porky had a problem with), much less all the Brazos in CMLL.

It also sounds like Nieto del Santo, (Hijo del Santo’s son, not Axxel) was introduced to the crowd as well.

I haven’t seen full results, only that
– Zorro lost his hair
– Muerte Cibernetica lost his mask

LLI has another YouTube clip package.

CMLL (SUN) 06/18 Arena Coliseo Results
2) Rayo Tapatio I, Rayo Tapatio I b Artillero, Super Comando
3) India Sioux, Marcela, Princesa Blanca b Hiroka, La Nazi, Rosa Negra
4) La Mascara b Tony Rivera and Stuka Jr. and Oro II and Neutron and Leono and Danger and Valiente and Mascara Purpura and Loco Max [Reyes del Aire, ciber]
Order of elimination: Valiente, Leono, Danger, Oro II, Loco Max, Tony Rivera, Stuka and Mascara Purpura DCO after a dive (Pupura got carted out), and Neutron lost to Mascara’s campana.
5) Okumura L Rey Bucanero and Negro Casas and Heavy Metal and Universo 2000 and Terrible and Tarzan Boy and Máximo [cage of death, hair]
Order of escape: Universo 2000, Negro Casas, Tarzan Boy, Maximo, Heavy Metal, Terrible. Rey pinned Okumura with the Buca Storm. In exchange for losing, Okumura got to jump off the top of the cage like a goof.

[“if THIS is the extent of Rey’s push” diatribe omitted]

No Crazy Boy trios match.

Haven’t seen results for the Arena Neza match yet.

In yet another mask match Sunday, Blackman II lost his mask in Iztacalco, and revealed himself as Rubén García, which also reveals him as the ex-Hurcan Jr.

CMLL (SAT) 06/17 Plaza de Toros Concorida, Orizaba, Veracruz Results
1) Mini Olimpico, Último Dragoncito b Mini Damian 666, Mini Halloween
2) India Sioux, Marcela, Sahori b Amapola, Hiroka, La Nazi
3) Apolo Dantes, Pierroth, Universo 2000 b Blue Panther, Lizmark Jr., Máximo
4) Damian 666, Hector Garza, Hijo del Perro Aguayo b Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero
For once, Rey got the better of his partners, turning on them and costing them the match.
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., Mistico, Negro Casas b Atlantis, Averno, Mephisto

Last Friday, there was a 07/01 Arena Monterrey press conference with big names that are supposed to be in the card (Santo, Canek, Tinieblas), so one would suppose this card will actually happen. The idea seems to be “WWE filled up the place with their names, so we’re going to put the best Mexican names and charge WWE prices.”

Magazines
– Super Luchas cover is on ECW One Night Stand
– Luchas 2000 cover has a big picture of Rey

Negro Casas is head to NJPW for their next tour, from July 1st til July 19th. No matches have been announced. (Strong Style Spirit)

There’s an Eddie Guerrero tribute show scheduled for July 2nd in Denver. (DENVER?) Chavo, Hector and Mando main event against the logical team of Villano IV, Rey Mysterio Senior and HAKU. I’ve got to go look up plane tickets.

Nacho Libre made $27.5 million this weekend, which is slightly above predictions but not good enough for #1 on the weekend. It sounds like it fell off big between Friday and Saturday and that sounds bad, but what do I know? $27.5 million dollars is still $27.5 million dollars, and when the movie cost somewhere in the $30s to make, that means they’re going to be in the black next week. YAY PROFIT.

Lineups are below

06/18: Accion, today’s shows

Accion highlights

CMLL: Wagner vs Park. Parks’ read outfit looks werid on TV. THey showcase the dives and the high impact Wagner moves, adn the ref bump. Wagner wins with a low blow and a middle rope splash.

AAA: La Parka vs Muerte Cibernetica, from Pachuquilla, Hidalgo. Chessman’s in the ring and intefereing when the clips pick up, Parka takes care of both for a few higlights, then gets a chairshot from someone. The Mexipowers run out for the save, adn one (not-IDed; I’d guess Crazy Boy) does an Asai Moonsault off a balcony, listed as 4.5m (14.8 feet) high, and that looks to be accurate. Crowd goes nuts for all of this. Muerte wins, with a low blow, and takes La Parka’s mask.

Today in Mexico is Triplemania, and a bunch of CMLL and IWRG shows run directly in opposition to TripleMania. What’s going on right as I type this

– Triplemania in Naucalpan, Mexico State. That’s just north of Mexico City.
– IWRG is running it’s normal show, in Arena Naucalpan, with Rayo de Jalisco vs Gran Markus as part of the trio main
– and they’re also running their new Arena Neza shows, with a 8 way cage of death match with some masks of note and no certain loser (though a few people who’d lose only their hair and it wouldn’t matter)
– CMLL has it’s normal Arena Coliseo show, but with a very abnormal double main: a Reyes del Air cibernetico (highspots madness), and an eight way cage match (which Okumura is surely losing.)
– CMLL also has a (usual) Chimalhuacan, Mexico State – with Ultimo Guerrero vs Rey Bucanero.

This isn’t like the Kids Day weekend deal, where every was running shows because they knew the demand was going to be off the chart. It’s instead seeming like a battle; AAA decided to run it’s biggest show in IWRG’s backyard and CMLL’s neighborhood, so they’re both counterstriking with bigger shows of their own. I don’t think this is going to hurt AAA’s attendence, based on a possibly incorrect guess that people just don’t watch AAA’s shows, they actually care about them and are more interested in seeing them resolve (on The Biggest Show Of the Year) then the stuff with 7 days of build that IWRG and CMLL are doing. CMLL and IWRG’s attendence will be intersting to watch, as will where (and when) AAA announces it’s other major shows of the year.

FWIW, in the 6/19 dated Observer, Dave Melzter mentions that AAA’s hoping for a ‘major’ jump tonight, but Dave’s skeptical. We’ve been down this road too many times to spend time speculating on names, and we’ll know in a few hours anyway.

Triplemania predictions:
1) La Parkita, Mascarita Sagrada, Octagoncito vs Jerrito Estrada, Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Chessman
Rudo minis win. Okay opener.
2) Alebrije & Estrellita vs Abismo Negro & Diabolica vs Billy Boy & Fabi Apache vs Gran Apache & Tiffany [#1, MEX MIX TAG]
Since the winners get a shot at Oriental and Cinthia Moreno, and the Billy Boy/Apache thing shall never end, I’ll guess Abismo and Diabolica
3) Chessman, Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz vs Laredo Kid, Nemesis, Rey Cometa Jr., Super Fly [MEX ATOMICO]
They seem to be going strong with the new kids, so title change here. If any match is going to be spectacular tonight, it’d be this one.
4) La Fiera, Mocho Cota, Pimpinela Escarlata, Sangre Chicana vs Casandro, El Brazo, Espectro Jr., Pirata Morgan
I guess Casandro over Pimpi. You must be this old to get on this ride.
5) Angel, Intocable, Octagon, Vampiro vs Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Shocker, Zumbido
Guapos, but there really are too many matches here with nothing going on, jus tto get everyone on teh card. Vampiro wisely takes zero bumps.
6) Zorro vs Charly Manson [cage]
This may be for hair, this may be for a title – we’ll see. It’s for sure last man standing rules, which will be used to explain everyone running in. Manson wins this one.
7) La Parka Jr. vs Muerte Cibernetica [mask]
It’d be a major shock if Muerte were to win.

06/17: Mexico results, GdR

CMLL (FRI) 06/16 Arena Mexico Results
1) Apocalipsis, Arkangel, Ramstein b Sensei, Sombra de Plata, Trueno
2) Pantera, Sagrado, Volador Jr. DQ Hombre Sin Nombre, Misterioso II, Okumura
3) Hijo de Lizmark, Lizmark, Mr. Niebla b Averno, Black Warrior, Mephisto
mask ripping. uh oh!
4) Dos Caras Jr., Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero b Atlantis, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero
5) Dr. Wagner Jr. b LA Park
Total brawl. There were some cheers for Park. Lots of wackiness (“AAA-like”) near the end, which dragged the match down. Wagner made the mask challenge, Park ignored him.

In his recap, Ocampo says it was a dull show, with attendence less than expected (somewhat due to rain.)

what’s airing on Guerreros del Ring
Arena Coliseo, 06/11
Heavy Metal, Máximo, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero vs Shigeo Okumura, Tarzan Boy, Terrible, Universo 2000
Averno, Mephisto, Ultimo Guerrero vs Damian 666, Misterioso II, Mr. Aguila

06/14: Box Y Lucha, Nacho Libre

Box Y Lucha has posted some new articles:
Vampiro told the magazine that he plans to retire from the ring within a year; he’s going to have a retirement tour and then move into a backstage role. He’s still involved Wrestle Society X project with MTV, and is hoping to talk them into shooting some episodes from Mexico, since they’ve doing stuff in Cancun before. He’s got his movies and CD projects going as well.
Rambo talks about various people he teamed with
Lizmark Jr. talks about his 28 tattoos
Preview of La Parka Jr. vs Muerte Cibernetica

Emilio Charles Jr. is replacing Okumura in IWRG’s 8 way cage match on Sunday, freeing up Okumura to lose in CMLL’s 8 way cage match.

you might have heard: Nacho Libre is in movie theatres today.

At times hilarious, but other times offensive, Director Jared Hess is unable to recapture the collective charisma of his Napoleon characters, instead relying on a one-joke concept that runs out of steam. Sure to entertain the adolescents, however.

Rotten Tomato’s consensus, which fits with the reviews I’ve read.

Personally, I’m just thrilled we’ve peaked in Nacho Libre articles at this point, because I’m so ready to move on to anything else. I’ve completely lost track of which stories I’ve already posted – did I post this Austin one yet? are you happy I’m skipping the college newspapers accusing the movie of racism? – and I’m pretty sure I don’t need or want to read any more. (One more spanish story on Fray Tormenta, while we’re at it.)

Now that I think about it, I have no idea when I’m going to see this. Might be a while. The reviews aren’t making it priority.
