05/11 news: weekend preview

Today’s Ovaciones has an interview with Rey Bucanero, re:Friday’s match. Rey’s not thrilled to be teaming with Atlantis, so this angle/teased feud now exists every place but the actual ring. Despite not liking his tag partner, Rey promises to win for his fans, and mainly all the beautiful ladies. They hint at him going his own way, but maybe I’m reading into that.

I’m not sure how much time I’m going to have the next few days, so let’s take a look at the weekend cards right now.

CMLL (FRI) 05/12 Arena Mexico Results
1) Marcela, Mima Shimoda, Sahori vs Amapola, Hiroka, Princesa Sujei
Probably just an opener and nothing more.
2) Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Heavy Metal, Hector Garza, LA Park, Mr. Niebla, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero vs Johnny Stamboli, Mark Jindrak, Milano Collection AT, Ohara, Okumura, Pierroth, Takemura, Tanaka [Gran Prix, Ciber]
There’s elements on Team Mexico which wouldn’t seem to work together well, so I don’t like their odds. Stamboli and Jindrak are supposed to be around at least till next Tuesday’s Queretaro show, so they may set something up for a rematch
3) Great Muta, Ultimo Dragon vs Atlantis, Rey Bucanero
Muta’s not losing here regardless, but perhaps Rey not liking Atlantis actually shows up in a result for once.
4) Mistico vs Black Warrior [NWA MW]
If Warrior loses here, then I have no idea what they’re doing. I have no idea what they’re doing, but I’ll have to pick Warrior anyway.

Toryumon Mexico (SAT) 05/13 Arena Mexico Lineup
thanks to DGUSA for the lineup
1) Fujita Hayato, Kanjyuuro Matsuyama, Shinjitsu Nohashi vs Arkangel, Negro Navarro, Skayde
old school
2) Hiroka, Mima Shimoda vs Dark Angel, India Sioux
This should be fun. I wouldn’t know Mima Shimoda if she walked in the room wearing a t-shirt that said “I am Mima Shimoda (you fool)”, but from reading bios, it’s going to be a matter of the others trying to keep up with her. Maybe they’ll learn something too.
3) Daisuke Hanaoka vs Toshiya Matsuzaki vs Hijo del Fantasma vs Brazo de Plata Jr. vs Astro Boy vs Matemático II vs Chaos vs Mano Negra Jr. vs Cuchillo vs Ultraman Jr. [br]
Last time we saw Hijo del Fantasma, he was part of AAA’s Mex Nat Middleweight tournament, so it’s quite strange to see him there. (Haven’t seen him on AAA lineups, now that I think about it, so maybe he’s done there?) Also, Brazo de Plata Jr. should be Kronos, unless they’ve given up on the Kronos gimmick quick.
4) Masada, Passion Hasegawa, Takemura vs Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Plata, Brazo de Platino
Brazos being Brazos
5) Kazuchika Okada, Milano Collection AT vs Johnny Kashmere, Trent Acid and Brute Issei, Okumura and Averno, Mephisto
This’ll probably turn into a tournament. Kashmere and Acid are US East Coast indy guys who were moved up from working the dark match opener (which leaves the guys they were supposed to face – where?)
6) Hajime Ohara vs La Mascara [NWA Welter]
I presume Ohara’s winning in so they can keep the title around for this promotion or El Dorado. If La Mascara win it, past precedent says he vacates the Mex National Welterweight championship, but this is probably a set up for Ohara to win a championship by beating a champion.
7) Dos Caras Jr., Hijo de Lizmark vs Johnny Stamboli, Mark Jindrak
The FBI got the best of Dos and Lizmark last time in, so you’d think they’d flip it this time.
8) Great Muta, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Ultimo Dragon vs Atlantis, Dr. Wagner Jr., Ultimo Guerrero [pi]
That second team has 0% chance of getting along.

There’s a story in Ecos De La Costa about a 06/24 show (date may change) in Villa de Alvarez, where they hope to use the revenue to build a new church. (Translation actually says ‘temple’, but I think they’re wrong?) Main event is scheduled to be Mistico/Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Atlantis/Ultimo Guerrero.

In lieu of a new update, El Halcon Net has reposted the last ten editions of the magazine. Worth reading if you haven’t already.

Someone’s posted a spanish language bio of Firpo Segura on the box y lucha board. He’s a star from the early days of lucha.

WWE’s announced (or will announce) the SD! brand is going to tour the Caribbean and Central America at the end of June.
06/29: San Juan, Puerto Rico
06/30: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (see article in http://www.radiorebeld.com/, May 13 @ 11 am. There’s some web streaming links and e-mails addresses to submit questions on this post: Ask if the symbols on their head means they’re in league with La Nazi! Ask them if they’re miffed not to part of the Pandilla! Ask them when they’re going to win the Arena Coliseo Tag Team Titles!

GdR #22, Gala #203, Gala #204

I don’t know why, but I feel compelled to post this in bunches. So that’s what I’m doing.

GdR #22 (04/22/06): This was nothing worth talking about.

CMLL #203 (02/04/06 GALA, 07/29/05 Mexico): This was the better cibernetico of the two, I thought. La Mascara is growing on me – he STILL needs a better name and he’s skipping in line ahead of other people who have waited longer and have earned it more, but I’ve got no problem with the things he’s actually in control of.

It’s interesting to see the progression in ideas for the women’s division

take 1: Lady Apache & Marcela vs Amapola & Dark Angel
(Lady Apache leaves)
take 2: La Nazi as a monster ruda vs Princesa Sujei
(this seemed to come out of left field, but GALA skips around enough, maybe I missed it)
take 3: Dark Angel vs Amapola

They must’ve had some idea they were going that way by Take 2, because the obvious thing would’ve been to put the foreigner Dark Angel on the (more) ruda side and they avoided it.

I wonder what the deal was with the Atlantis/Rey teased program was? They couldn’t have just been setting it up for Guadalajara, could they? Maybe they were thinking of it as an alternate to the Wagner/Atlantis mask match, but not for long before they caved in and turned Atlantis.

CMLL #204 (02/11/06 GALA, 08/05/05 Mexico): Me being me, I was focused on Tarzan during the beatdown, and I think his bit here was just being a third wheel to fill out the side. PdM didn’t tell him what was up or take it easy on him before the turn, but everyone likes beating up Pierroth, so he can understand. He’s not part of the group at this time – they would’ve told him about the turn if he was! – but he wasn’t angry about the turn either.

(Equally or more likely, they really didn’t tell him what to do. But let’s pretend!)

There was no beatdown in the Casas/GdI match! That completely threw me off guard. I would’ve prefered the long mat time going to Ultimo vs Felino or Ultimo vs Negro, but I’m not going to complain.

Queue

GdR (1)
05/05 #24

GALA (8 = 16 hours)
02/19 #206 (08/19/05) <-- next 03/04 #213 (10/07/05) 03/18 #215 (10/21/05) 04/08 best of AAA '05 04/15 #218 (11/11/05) 04/22 #219 (11/18/05) 04/29 #221 (12/02/05) 05/05 #222 (12/09/05) 8! Smallest number in some time. I haven't even moved the GdR from analog to digital yet, but I hope to do that tommorow.

Lucha Times

Normal times.

Saturday: This is the Santo/Negro vs Averno/Mephisto title match, which was said to be good, but both the top two matches could’ve been better.

Sunday: Leyenda de Plata part A – okay but kinda disappointing.

GdR: Mistico match + Women, I think.

That picture (stolen from Ovaciones) is Santo’s state in the Tepito district of Mexico City. It was sculpted by Edwin Jorge Barrera Gracia in bronze. It’s 3.6 meters tall (nearly 12 feet), weighs 1500 kg (3300 pounds), and cost 400 000 pesos ($36,500 US). There are stories on the unveiling in La Jornada and Aldiatx.

If you haven’t read the comments over the weekend, the big 05/28 Monterrey show, packed with big CMLL names from top to bottom to an unreal degree, turns out to be an unreal show. On this week’s CMLL show, it was announced via letter from the lucha comission that none of the scheduled CMLL wrestlers would be appearing, and are all programmed elsewhere in Mexico that day. The show had been announced since the beginning of April, but it’s not implausible for CMLL to be unaware of something everyone else knows.
