04/23 news: new match for Arena Mexico anniversary show

Hector Garza vs Ultimo Guerrero for the CMLL LH Championship has been added to this Friday’s show. Gotta figure they’re setting up a split situation, with whichever side wins this match losing the hair match. Since I’m leaning towards the PdM losing the hair match, this might mean Ultimo loses a title he’s held for over 3 years. You never know until it happens, though.

Super Luchas 158 has photos of people getting their masks rippped.

Miami Herald has a story on a night in Arena Mexico as a introduction to lucha libre.

(Strong Style Spirit) Sangre lost in NJPW on 04/23, with his partner Yujiro taking the fall to Koji Kanemoto and Wataru Inoue. Next match is on the 23th.

Elsewhere on this webpage, Joe and I talked lucha libre and various other things for 30 minutes on the first edition of Joe versus the World. Check it out and let you us know what you think.

Gala notes

Scheduled episode is airing. Yay. La Nazi is so happy to be La Nazi, it’s kinda disturbing.

Anyone reading this going to the Chicago lucha shows this weekend? I’m not going to tonight’s show (Bulls/Heat) but I’m definetly making it out to the Congress on Sunday.

04/22 news: Arena Mexico results,

Two falls; GdI got DQed in fall 1 for excessive violence, and PdM got a sudden comeback win in fall 2.
5) Averno, Black Warrior, Universo 2000 b Dr. Wagner, LA Park, Mistico
Warrior wants a shot at Mistico’s NWA Middleweight Championship.

Sangre Azteca got a win in Japan today, teaming with Liger and Prince Devitt to beat Koji Kanemoto, Wataru Inoue and Taguchi. Sangre got the submission win on Inoue, and I think that’s a mild upset. His next match is tommorow, teaming with another NJPW rookie, Yujiro, versus Koji Kanemoto and Wataru Inoue. If he can pull that one off, maybe he’s going places.

04/21 news: Thursday Puebla, Mexico preview

Ovaciones just has a basic Arena Mexico preview. Things to look for tonight
* what they do to build Rey/Tarzan vs Aguila/Damian for next week
* any movement (or closure) on Warrior vs Mistico
* Amapola wrestling her first match in Arena Mexico unmasked
It’s a typical “lull week before a big show” show.

Sangre Azteca in New Japan: (via Strong Style Spirit)
04/20: Jado & Gedo b Jushin Lyger & Sangre (Jado Crossface on Sangre)
04/21: Koji Kanemoto & Wataru Inoue b Sangre Azteca & Prince Devit (Inoue Triangle Lancer Devitt)

Devitt’s a rookie, so whoever teams with him is probably screwed during this tour. Sangre’s teaming with him and Lyger on the next show.

El Halcon #60 is up
– interview with Ultimo Dragon. He talks about Toryumon but just the basics. He explains “the Dragon” idea as a request from WWE (“Mr. McMahon” specifically) to come up with a new identity before returning to the WWE. The fans in Japan wanted the old Ultimo Dragon back, so he’s back to the old name. The “Asai DDT” is now “the Dragon Cutter”.
– Addiccion Luchistica talks about the new tag champs, Latin Lover, and the members of the box y lucha forum meeting the likes of Canek and Fuerza Guerrera
– interview with Emilio Charles Jr. He never saw his father wrestle, but people who knew said he was a pioneer. Emilio thinks some of the newer guys aren’t going to hold up a long time, because they’re taking too many risks. They need to realize it’s wrestling and not a circus.
– Results from 04/11 Queretaro. Dr. Wagner got annoyed by the drumming of a rudo fan group, so he broke their drumstick!
– Q&A with Hooligan. He has seven brothers. His favorite singer is Shakira.
– Interview with the mysterious Hombre Sin Nombre. His family didn’t want him to wrestle, but decided that it was better than him getting on drugs. (That’s an either/or?) Satanico and Blue Panther are training him now. He’s wearing black because his heart is black. He’s not sure if he’s going to stick with the name.
– Fotos of El Lince defeated Fuego Latino for the Queretaro middleweight championship

This Week’s Update

Over on luchawiki.com, we’re featuring Canek this week…mostly because I realized I missed his apuesta record and felt bad. I don’t often feel sympathy for Canek.

A heads up to anyone still looking at the old site; we’ve made a ton of edits, categorized hundred of articles and added some new material to the new site, so you really ought to be looking over there. And, sometime after next Thursday, I’m going to make the old site disappear, so you might want to change your bookmark already.

04/20: scattered news

CMLL (SUN) 04/16 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara Results [CMLL, KrisZ]
1) Imposter b Ray Romero
2) Metro b Destroyer
3) Amapola, Atenea b Luna Magica, Silueta
4) Cesar Dantes, Guero Loco, Infierno b Gallo, Neutron, Oro II
5) Blue Panther, Virus DQ Cien Caras, Universo 2000 [sf]
6) Averno, Mephisto b La Mascara, Volador Jr. [sf]
7) Averno, Mephisto b Blue Panther, Virus [final]
They’re running a no DQ rematch this Sunday.

I haven’t heard the result of the Acapulo stakes match from last night, but I gotta figure, if somehow Pierroth pulled a tremendous upset, it’d make headlines in 50-point print around Mexico (and Puerto Rico!)

Ovaciones says, at least as of right now, the double hair match with Rey & Tarzan vs Damian & Mr. Aguila is just that. No relevos incredible, no cage, no other stip – just two guys losing their hair.

CMLL Magazine #45 is up on Alexis’ site. Note Marcela/Hiroka is on the program for Sunday (tercera), and Sagrado seems very angry about something on Tuesday. Also, there’s a great shot where Negro and Mistico appear to confuse belts for hats.

If you haven’t read it yet, rudopolis updated yesterday afternoon with a couple weeks of recaps and news (including spotting refs wearing IFB’s for the first time.) elHalcon.net is scheduled to have a new edition tommorow.
