GdR #1

11/27

So, I got a DVD in the main today. (THANKS!) Got both this and the other GdR epsiode I missed, so I’m going to watch Atlantis/Mistico tommorow.

This show as good – the tag match much more so – but both match were sub 9 minutes and didn’t have a whole to them. Fun, but not award winning fun or anything.

Seeing part 4 of a story isn’t as fun when we haven’t seen Parts 1 thru 3 (the Leyenda de Plata tournament stuff.)

CMLL #202

01/28

Disappointed by these single matches – both really short and felt that way. This match was longer than the previous week’s, but didn’t feel like a lucha title match.

It’s a lot easier to be sympathetic to Atlantis’ plight when you know he doesn’t get the mask in the end. Having now watched this, my three theories about this are
– fans always prefer the new tecnico over the stale tecnico
– even if the general populace knew didn’t know the plan was for Atlantis to win a mask match, they could feel where this was going and didn’t like it. They were pushing Atlantis hard and they weren’t doing Seccion Wagner spots. The Wagner/rudo fans knew the score.
– after the Elektro/Bronco mess, the dissident fans realized they could effectively boo a concept out of existence and wanted to be sure their voices were heard.

Skip this show.

I’m going to sorta go back on something I said earlier. We’ll see if I get distracted by Olympic events from hours ago.

Lucha Times

Odd week.

Saturday: The next scheduled episode is a three hour episode, so when I saw a two hour slot (and it’s an hour earlier than normal this week), I figured they’d just cut out the first hour. Instead, the Galavision preview reveals they’re taking an easier path – skipping to the next two hour show. Kinda lazy, but I’m not attached to anything in that week’s episode. The Parajes Incredible trios match sounds fun.

Sunday: No Vuelta. The programming is shuffled to accomedate the usual futbol game, but I don’t know why they’d cut the show this week.

GdR: I’m guessing the women’s match from last Friday, and I can’t figure out if it’s some form of reverse psychology. India Sioux fanatics will want to note she’s not in the match this week.

Coming: Arkangel returns from a 13 day eastern Asian tour, working in Korea and in Japan for Michinoku Pro Wrestling. Arkangel reports to Ovaciones that he was such a rudo against Ultimo Dragon in Korea on 02/10, the fans were on the verge of attacking him. He hopes to go back soon, but doesn’t have a date

Going: Atlantis is expected to do a two week tour of Japan for an unspecified group, according to Ovaciones. It’d be sometime in March.

Coming?: Kenzo Suzuki told the Japanese press that he’s been signed to an exclusive Mexico deal with CMLL and will be working frequently there over the next few months. I really hope this is Kenzo working an angle thru the press. He wasn’t horrible the first time, but give him time and I’m sure he can get up to that level. Expect a whole lot of matches with Dos Caras if this happens.

Staying: According to the Figure Four, Super Porky’s WWE contract says he can keep wrestling in CMLL (and other places WWE doesn’t care about).

El Halcon Net #53 – Year 2, Issue 1 – went up yesterday. They’re going for a Tuesday mid-morning weekly publishing schedule. Inside:
– WWE recap for the last few months.
– Interview with Dos Caras Jr. Except for not winning a belt, he was really happy with 2005. His big problem was pre-existing nose injuries – four fractures in the area – which he never really had fixed and were getting worse and worse till he was down to about 7% of his normal nose breath capacity. He finally got it fixed and the recovery was tough, but he says it’s all good now. (I wonder if this was done before this week’s injury, because I believe it’s the nose again.) He filmed a part in a movie called “El Campeon & Su Pandilla” and says airing on Canal 52, but hasn’t actually had a chance to watch it – too busy. He may do more later. Dos’ webpage is (still) coming soon. His goal for 2006 is the CMLL Heavyweight Title.
– Recap of the Black Tiger/LA Park show in Torreon. Ultimo challenged Dr. Wagner to a mask match after their match, but I don’t believe it.
– Interview with Dr. X. His goal in 2006 is to move up on the cards more. He has nice words to say about Dr. O’Borman Sr.
– A long bio on Santo, 22 years after his death. The author cites Santo’s debut lost by DQ for excessive violence as the first time it had happened in Mexico – is that true? The article also says Santo’s greatest fame was in the 70s. Despite not being the same singles wrestler he once was, Santo, Mil Mascaras and Solitario were the trio of 1975.
– Q & A with Star Man. Besides wrestling, he owns and operates a gym.
– Data sheet on Vaquero. He and Polvora are brothers, and his finisher is named the Vaquero.
– Interview with indy wrestler Black Soul.
– Poster of Black Warrior.

Being on their links page is the COOLEST THING EVER, by the way.

On Slam, there’s a story about Mexican artist Demian Flores Cortes’, who’s Pop Art work is being exhibited at USC (Los Angeles)’s Fisher Gallery. Included is lucha libre inspired pieces, and luchadores Los Chivos doing live demonstrations.

I’m thinking I should finish up with the Dr. Wagner/Atlantis II TV show tonight (only have that match left to watch), and then I’ve got to watch at least one DVD before bopping around to other stuff. Even though it’s a good GdR, I’m going to hold off on the recap till next week so I can watch eligible more stuff this week.
