Tapatia Award Deadline Reminder

Just to remind you, the Tapatia Awards deadline is this Friday (midnight, Samoan Standard time-ish)

Links to the ballot, more information, discussion one more time. Ballots go to luchaawards@thecubsfan.com.

I’ve already recieved more ballots than last year (which is impressive until you remember how many there were last year), but I haven’t voted yet and I figure most of you haven’t voted either because you’re waiting for the last minute to squeeze in more matches or whatever. Take your time and figure it out, just make sure to get the e-mails into by Friday night.

Awards probably won’t be posted before next Tuesday.

I think I’m going to pencil together a prelim ballot at lunch today, just to see where I’m at. If you have any questions or problems with your ballot, e-mail me or leave a comment.

02/14 News: IWRG Results, Box Y Lucha news

Ovaciones has an article previewing Tuesday and Friday’s cards. Mistico vs Ultimo is signed for Sunday. The other article has interviews with Lola Gonzalez and Cinthia Moreno about the Reina de Renas. Not much new there – Lola say sit was a mistake to retire in 1997 but doesn’t sound like she plans a long return. Cynthia Moreno’s goal is to establish herself as the best in Mexico.

Box Y Lucha #2753 is up
Cover focuses on the tag title match, AAA on TV, and Santo saying he’s NOT going to WWE.
Poster has bloody pictures of LA Park & Black Tiger
– Averno & Mephisto talk about the tag team title match. Averno figures they beat Panther & Atlantis and Negro & Santo, they shouldn’t be worried about Mistico & Warrior. Mephisto points their superior teamwork; the challengers can’t get there in a one week.
– Mistico & Black Warrior talk about the tag team title: Mistico sees this part of his rivalry with Averno, which won’t end till masks are put on the line, but he also want to have a CMLL Title. Warrior just wants a belt too – it’s been too long for him without one.
– Santo says he’s not going to the WWE. He left (after Super Astros) on good terms, they invited him to the SD! Mexico shows and they’ve talked, but he’d rather work in Mexico and doesn’t know if how he’d get over in the US. It sounds like a possibility (though no idea how strong) he could work for WWE next time in Mexico, though.
– Hijo del Solitario talks about returning to lucha action; he’s been out 14 months with a bad knee injury. He’s talking about returning to CMLL in March or April, and talking about God quite a bit.
– Speaking of Hijos who want into Arena Mexico, Hijo de Cien Caras, listed as 29 years old, is looking for a chance. His current goal is to take Rayo de Jalisco’s mask and give it to his dad. It’s nice to have goals.
– Oriental hypes a tribute show to his father (Acorazado Moreno) on 02/14 in Arena Azteca Budokan. There’s also going to be taped a show taped for GAORA on 03/12, with Tigre Emperador, three Japanese women facing Cinthia Moreno, Miss Janeth, and La Diabolica, and more AAA wrestlers.
– Mini Pierroth talks about his WWE deal – which isn’t quite signed yet. He’s amazed at having to be at a show five hours before, and having catering, medicinal services and costume designers backstage.
– Bello Greco, opponent of Santo, has been recovering from prostrate surgery. He’s happy Maximo is bringing dignity back to the exotico gimmick.
– Scorpio Jr. talks about jumping to AAA. Basically, he’d been an independent for two years and wanted a change.
– Jerry Estrada talks about his post-retirement life. He’s promoting shows in La Paz, he’s a gym trainer in a prison, and would like to teach some of them lucha. He figures his biggest rival was Lizmark, and his biggest win was beating Pierroth for the CMLL LH Title in Pierroth’s home town (not San Juan), because he had to be people from over the world to get that far and then a man in front of his home people.

The new elhalconnet is supposed to be up sometime today.

KrisZ was on the Figure 4 Daily show this past Monday. It’s subscription only, but sign up to listen, it’s quite good. As a bonus, if you’d like to get bombed for Valentine’s Day, take a drink every time KrisZ says “oh yes” and you’ll be gone in no time.

CMLL #201

01/21

This show was far more worthwhile for the crowd reactions than actual matches. (Though, I did total it up later – the tournament ran 40 minutes in combined time. A shame how they split it up.)

Whoever laid out the women’s match – or maybe who clipped it for TV – really wanted the rudas to look good and didn’t do Lady Apache any favors. So not that way I expected that go do, even knowing about it ahead of time.

If you like a show with the longest match going 6:42, this is the show for you.

Next up is – uh, the next week’s show.
