01/13 news: more WWE notes, Sagrado, last Friday Coliseo show of season

At Wednesday’s press conference, the WWE revealed that it loves Mexicans. Tickets are still available for the Guadalajara and Monterrey shows (which don’t have cards as of yet.) Ovaciones makes it sound like Kurt Angle would replace Batista on those cards, and they’d otherwise stay as currently listed.

Newspapers rarely tend to say “wrestling”, so it greatly amused me to read another WWE in Mexico story where JBL’s self-proclaimed line is “Dios de la Lucha Libre.” If Bradshaw were to actually declare himself “God of Lucha Libre” while in Mexico (or really, any time at all), it would perhaps be the greatest thing ever.

Also in Ovaciones is an interview with Sagrado for the Arena Mexico preview. He’s lost about 4kg (8.8 lb) to move himself into the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight categories and just be in better shape. He, Maximo, and Texano Jr. train together an average four hours a day, just so they can be an awesome team.

Speaking of that card:

CMLL (FRI) 01/13 Arena Coliseo Lineup
1) Rayo Tapatito I, Rayo Tapatio II vs Zayko, Polvora
2) Crazy Boy, Tigre Blanco, Tiger Metalico vs Flecha, Super Comando, Artillero
3) Maximo, Sagrado, Texano Jr. vs Mr. Mexico, Nitro, Dr. X
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Rayo de Jaliscor Jr., Brazo de Plata vs Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000
5) Tarzan Boy, Rey Bucanero, Olimpico vs Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Hector Garza, Damian 666

This is the close of the Arena Coliseo season of Friday events. I suspect the Mexican Trios champions will indeed lose in the third match to set up a rematch for the Arena Mexico return, and they’ll probably continue to build GdA/Perros stuff.

LXN (SAT) 01/14 Gimnasio Yuyin Luzcando de Bethania Lineup
1) Rey Metalico vs Scorpio (Yuyin)
2) Lady Beautiful vs Sensual
3) Toxcio & Latin Snake vs Rey Geopardo & Bad Blue Jr. [? TAG]
4) Demoledor & Black Killer vs Vampiro & Titan Jr.
5) Vampiro vs Azor

Yea, that cna’t be right, but that’s what the paper says.

indy (SUN) 01/15 Arena Solidaridad Lineup [rfc]

Monday: Best Wrestler
Tuesday: Best Promotion, Best Rivalary
Wednesday: Best Tecnico, Best Rudo
Thursday: Best Legend, Best Female, Most Improved, Most Underutilized
Friday: Best Match, Best Singles Match, Best Non-Singles match
Next Monday: Who won in other awards (perhaps)
Next Monday: VOTING OPENS!

Best Legend

This is a nice way of saying Best “Old” Wrestler, with old being defined as 40. It’s an age that typically few professional athletes last past – except Lucha Libre.

Here’s the full list, as taken from elsewhere on this page (and next to be added to the Wrestler Info Cards.) Ages are as of 12/31/05

Olimpico  		12/06/65	40.1
LA Park 		11/14/65	40.2
Dr. Wagner Jr.		08/12/65	40.4
Safari/HSN	  	06/10/65	40.6
Mascarita Sagrada 	01/11/65	41.0
Felino  		03/22/64	41.8
Pantera  		02/03/64	41.9
Hijo del Santo		08/02/63	42.4
Universo 2000 		04/18/63	42.7
Super Porky 		03/19/63	42.8
Atlantis  		09/28/62	43.3
Bestia Salvaje 		02/11/62	43.9
Blue Panther 		09/18/60	45.3
Negro Casas 		01/10/60	46.0
Rayo de Jalisco		01/01/60	46.0
Mascara Sagrada		11/06/59	46.2
Mascara Ano 2K		03/10/58	47.8
Pierroth  		03/10/58	47.8
Emilio Charles Jr.	10/12/56	49.3
Canek  			06/19/52	53.6
Satanico  		11/26/49	56.1
Cien Caras 		10/18/49	56.2

(FWIW, next year: Ultimo Dragon, Scorpio Jr., Nitro, Arkangel, Blue Demon, Misterioso Sr. I’m surely missing plenty of ages and I’m never 100% about the birthdates; I’ve got Veneno listed as 33, and have trouble beliving it, for instance.)

Best Female

Again, this is basically a list, in three parts.

Famous Women (this year)
* Lady Apache
* Princea Sujei
* Fabi Apache
* Marcela
* Tiffany
* Amapola
* Dark Angel

Semi-Famous Women (this year)
* La Diabolica
* Cinthia Moreno
* Esterllita
* Martha Villalobos
* La Nazi
* Diana La Cazadora
* India Sioux
* Miss Janeth
* Princesa Blanca

Other Women (this year)
* Sahori
* La Chola
* La Hechicera
* Medusa
* Linda Star
* Hiroka

Most Improved

I’m lost on this award. I can only think of one person who makes sense as a candidate, and he was such a non-factor before it’s a still a bit of a stretch. I’d really to hear candidates from other people, because I’ve got no idea who I’m going to vote for right now.

The one name I want to throw out with confidence is Maximo. He was utterly forgettable as Brazo de Plata Jr., and ‘s now he’s a rising star as a gay Roman. I didn’t see that one coming – but I’m sure Porky did; remember the angle was he forced Brazo de Plata Jr. (and Oro Jr.) into signing up for the Guapos 2004 contest? Maximo would’ve been the quite the bizarro Guapo.

Most Underutilized

This is so close to Most Favorite, that’s why both aren’t here. In my mind, the critera for this award is “guy I like much more than management seems to – and I have proof he deserves that extra attention.” Lucha being lucha, this is going to be the same guys year after year. Someday, they’ll break thru. Partial list of obvious ideas, excluding those who I feel are too utilized to make the list.

* Ricky Marvin (based on his non-push in Mexico)
* Sangre Azteca (ditto!)
* Volador Jr.
* Rey Bucanero
* Terrible (who I like more than you do)
* Hooligan
* Misterioso II (see Terrible comment)
* Virus
* Ultimo Dragoncito
* Barrio Boys

If Ryan F doesn’t vote a straight cat ballot here, I will be disappointed in the world.

6) Damián 666, Héctor Garza DQ Universo 2000, Máscara Año 2000 [Triangle Match, 3rd Fall]

Not sure why they did all three matches, but maybe since the second match was so short, they figured they might as well. Typical hair match challenges after the main event.

AAA (TUE) 01/10 Arena Juba de Reynosa Results
1) Guerrero del Camino & Punos de Serpiente b Black Star & Guerrero Estrella

CMLL (MON) 01/16 Arena Puebla Lineup
1) Valiente, Kirvan, Forajido vs Flecha, Mr. Rafaga, Ares
2) Asturian, Trueno, el Tigre vs Furia Chicana, Siki Osama, Bobby Jack
3) Starman, Centella de Oro, SWAT vs el Hijo de Gran Markus, Kraken, Maniacop
4) Dr. Wagner, Mr. Niebla, Ultimo Dragon vs Canek, Damian 666, Perro Aguayo Jr.

WWE (THU) 01/19 Palacio de los Deportes, Mexico City Lineup [ova]
1) the Boogeyman vs Sylvan
2) Bobby Lashley vs Orlando Jordan
3) Heidenreich & Road Warrior Animal vs the Dicks
4) MNM (“Adam Carlon” & “John Hennigan”) vs Psicosis & Super Crazy [WWE TAG]
5) Chris Benoit vs JBL
6) Undertaker vs Randy Orton
7) Rey Mysterio vs Booker T

Card order may not be correct. Batista and Bob Orton are off due to injury, and [SmackDown! Spoiler] has not been taken into account, but there’s still quite a few people shuffled off because they went to more singles matches; Matt Hardy, Simon Dean, Paul London, Jamie Noble, William Regal, Paul Burchill were all listed on cards; the current ones on WWE.com have Mark Henry basically taking Bob Orton’s spot and he’s not here either. Not sure if the US Title would be on the line for whoever has it at this point, and kinda surprised Booker’s back in the ring.

I can’t believe they announced MNM’s legit names (and I didn’t realize I didn’t know Joey Matthews’ real name until now), but that’s Mexico for you.

Mysterio, Super Crazy and Psicosis all talked at the press conference. Rey is indeed wearing his mask. They’re going to have increased security for the show. There’s plans for an Eddie tribute on the show. Rey said Batista is undergoing surgery today (Thursday), but if his doctors allow him, he’ll try to make an appearance on the show, though depending on the source, that sounds less certain. They explained Juvi was let go for discipline problems and didn’t want to dwell on it.

Besides Ovaciones, there was coverage of the press confrence in

* La Jornada – Rey says here that some of the US guys are scared of a stiff lucha ring; I can’t believe they’d actually use a lucha ring.
* La Cronica
* El Universal Online – under the impression Paul London is a star!
* Diario de Mexico
* Once TV – Psicosis credits Eddie and Rey for helping him with US psychology.
* Whatever newspaper someone took a photo off here (via box y lucha)

Speaking Box Y Lucha, I think I must be imagining a thread where posters are debating which matches were real and which are fake. Then again, I guess I could see why you might think a Canek match might not be on the level.

While I’m clipping news articles, there’s some press for Nacho Libre on ET Online and Latino Review, an interview with the director of the movie. He’s a huge Santo movie fan, which explains everything. Interestingly, the story here is the movie couldn’t be actually based on Fray Tormenta because that movie was already made (in French!), and someone else owns the rights.

el Halcon #53 is not up; they’re doing some work on the website, so they only have a small supplement of their usual content
– Interview with Ricky Marvin in Japan. He doesn’t understand why he’s not a bigger deal (or booked as a bigger deal) in Mexico.
– Pictures from Arena Solidaridad
– Poster of Dr. X

In their forums, a poster is starting a Year In Review of Arena Solidaridad events, including pictures of the main events.

2005 Tapatia Awards Discussion: Best Tecnico, Best Rudo

Schedule of Discussion:
Monday: Best Wrestler
Tuesday: Best Promotion, Best Rivalary
Wednesday: Best Tecnico, Best Rudo
Thursday: Best Legend, Best Female, Most Improved, Most Underutilized
Friday: Best Match, Best Singles Match, Best Non-Singles match
Next Monday: Who won in other awards (perhaps)

Today’s nominees are a lot easier to isolate, I believe. It’s seems like repetition of Best Wrestler, but because you have to distinguish yourself as either a tecnico or a rudo, those who wrestled as a tweener (Shocker) and those who switched back and forth depending on the match (Universo) are non-factors here, while those who connected with the crowd despite not being in an important role (PorkY) might get a few votes.

Everything can be broke into groups. Everything!

Best Tecnico

recent DVDMB thread on this topic

The Idols Of The Year: Mistico was compared to Rey Mysterio Jr., and Dr. Wagner was compared to Steve Austin in terms of popularity. That’s like, really really good. It’s a debate who’s 1, but it’s tough to see either being left off.

Novelty Acts: Groon, until he actually wrestled. Dark Angel, possibly.

Eternal crowd favorites: Negro Casas, Santo, LA Park, La Parka, Latin Lover, Brazo de Plata, Maximo (new addition), Mascarita Sagrada, Vampiro

Near Misses: Dos Caras Jr. will probably scoot up to the next level soon, Texano Jr. and La Mascara were guys they hope move up levels, and there’s plenty of juniors who didn’t get much attention from the promoters.

Best Rudos

recent DVDMB thread on this topic

No need to look past the leaders of the two strong factions

Perros Del Mal: Perro Aguayo Jr. and Hector Garza were top threats to tecnicos. Not so strong on the others; Halloween and Damian’s biggest moments were in a rudo/rudo feud, so it didn’t really depend strong on their rudoness. Terrible seemed to disappear during the year, and Blue Demon wasn’t around much.

Guerreros del Infernal/Atlantis: Ultimo Guerrero is a rudo’s rudo. Rey Bucanero and Tarzan Boy were the usual selves. Atlantis finally committed to the turn a bit too late to consider here.

Aren’t fun to watch, but apparently fun to boo: Canek, Pierroth

Eternal AAA crowd favorites (by rudo fans): Cibernetico, Chessman, Abismo Negro (didn’t turn till late), Mini Abismo Negro

Lucha TImes

Normal times, all around.

Saturday: Unlike last years, the 2005 Gran Alternativa should make Galavision, this week. This doubles as the start of a month of Atlantis vs Wagner action, leading up to a NWA Light Heavyweight title match which in turn was supposed to set up the mask match. Also, Dark Angel debuts – as a rudo, in a tag match opposite Lady Apache, a quite different direction than they ended up taking things.

Sunday: Ultimo Guerrero vs Dos Caras Jr. (1 of 2) airs this week – I thought that match was good the first time thru.

GdR: I have no idea. There’s no preview for next week on last week’s show, so I just picked some matches. I’ve got a clean 36% chance of picking one of them.

Los Hermanos Dinamita are said to have an offical website at http://www.loshermanosdinamita.tk/, except they quickly exceeded their bandwidth (I guess), so who knows.

Both the CMLL Arena Mexico card and the updated WWE cards (which have to be quite rebooked at this point) may be publicized tomorrow.

In between five hundred other things, I updated the links on the sidebar. Yay for me.
