Lucha Times

Saturday: all day, on Galavision (and CAN51) is a telethon for needy children. This show will only air at 3AM EST, which means they’ll grab a random show to reair.

Sunday: Normal time for GALA. Lots of trios. I haven’t seen this show yet, and I don’t think I’m going to be thrilled when I do.

Arena Coliseo on CAN52 at 3PM EST Sunday only. Assuming I get the timer on my VCR to work, I’m totally taping this time.

local lucha update

Finally gotten around to posting results from last Sunday’s Congress theatre show. You’ll notice a lot of new/strange names on the undercard, as most of the workers have been caught in a promotional war between the two lucha groups in Chicago.

This is beyond stupid, because they don’t run the same days (or, in many cases, the SAME MONTH), they don’t run the same buildings (any more), they’re really not all that close to each other and, as much as I might love some of ’em, no Chicago lucha wrestler is anything close to a significant draw at this moment. I can’t understand how it affects either business (and to be fair, I think it’s only O’Campo’s group with the “us or them, not both” stance) one single cent. It probably hurts them more than anything, because a lot of the guys need more time in front of crowds, and you’re cutting down the number of shows they can work.

The stated reason for the guys who’ve stuck with O’Campo (who’s no longer running Congress) is they have a TV show. Which would be fine, if it was on a television station anyone actually got. It is not available on any cable system, over the air only, and I had a hard time finding even an FCC record of it existing the last time I checked, so I’ll skip even mentioning it. The real reason to go with O’Campo is he appears to run far more often (though apparently usually with nothing more than very local posters?), and you’re probably getting more experience and more money that way. So I don’t blame anyone for going that way, I just think the whole thing is moronic.

Anyway, the show. All this info via luchfan, who is great but I would love if he slowed down, thought out what he was writing and used better punctuation and spelling.

FMLL (SUN) 11/27 Congress Theatre Results [chipro]
1) Will Martel b Dante Devil
2) Angel Dorado & Angel de la Muerte b Mascara de Jade & Leprosi
3) Guerrerito del Futuro, Payasos (Coco Verde & Coco Negro) b SWAT Kat, Aguila Tapatia, Lupillo el Terrible
4) Mascara Sagrada & Atomo b Aguila del America & Shamu Jr.
5) Blue Demon Jr. & Brazo de Plata b Satanico & Villano III

Satanico indeed had a shaved head. (That darn Emilio!) There were fliers for this weekends O’Campo show:

O’Campo (SAT) 12/03 Chi-Town Lineup:
Kato Kung Lee, Mano Negra, Super Astro, Casandro

All these guys have been in Chicago in the last year or so. Probably not worth going out of your way to see.

Announced names for the next Congress show.

FMLL (FRI) 01/20 Congress Theatre Results [chipro]
Scheduled to appear: Mistico, LA Park, Damian 666, Averno.

No, I won’t believe it till the week of the show either. If Mistico got booked elsewhere and Park got booked elsewhere (I’m betting yes), I’d still go just to see Averno. And, even though it’s going to take some work to get there, I like Friday shows better than I like Sunday ones.

quick site notes

I’m not sure if I’ll get to lucha times today. Next lucha recap probably won’t happen till later this week (if I even get time to do a bonus one this week – the fact that the next one in the queue is ULTIMO VS MISTICO is a bit intimidating, because I’d be torn apart if I didn’t think it’d rule.) Non news stuff might be scarce this week and next week (and it’s not like the news is hopping either.)

I’m going to be slightly change things on the blog – if you’ve linked to a page on the blog itself (anything with the blue/purple-ish background), the extension will shift over from .shtml to .php sometime over the next few days (maybe the weekend.) If you’re just linking to cmllblog.com or thecubsfan.com/cmll or the lucha times page or the wiki, that’s all the same. This affects maybe 1% of you, but you’ve stopped reading this now.

I’m spending a bit a free time on the next step of the roster database. Lots of ironing out annoying bugs. I’m aiming to get it presentable by the end of Decemeber (so I can deal with that AND the vote at the same time, good move), but we’ll see.

CMLL (TUE) 11/29 Arena Coliseo Results [ova]
1) Mini Olimpico, Bracito de Oro b Mini Violencia, Fire
2) Kronos, Trueno, Leono b Ramstein, Super Comando, Artillero
3) Satanico, Pantera, Metro DQ Misterioso, Okumura, Masada
4) Pierroth, Hijo de Pierroth, Terrible b Hijo de Lizmark, Lizmark Sr., Black Warrior
5) Mistico, Mr. Niebla, Dos Caras Jr. b Atlantis, Averno, Mephisto
Ovaciones report builds it as Niebla and Dos over Averno and Mephisto. That’s not a title match I need to see.

The Texano tribute last week raised about 70,000 pesos ($6,609.82 US) for his medical costs.

Shocker beat Intocable in a match in Queretaro. Ovaciones says Alan Stone has (re)joined Shocker’s new Guapo U. Wonder if he’ll win this time.

Semifinalists in the Mexican Middleweight Championship are Zumbido, el hijo del Fantasma, Psicosis and Histeria. I think I could even make brackets if I looked back.

The cover of Guerrero del Ring #11 features Dos Caras Jr.

No lineups yet, but Sangre Azteca and Safari join NJPW on the next show as part of their tour, on Saturday.

11/29 news

The photos from Friday also illustrate how Santo and Negro revealed Averno was under Mistico’s mask: They pulled off his track pants to reveal his Averno tights underneath. Good thing he was still wearing them.

There’s a Lucha Libre primer article in Arizona Daily Star, as a supplement to the “Masks of Mexico” exhibit at Arizona State Museum. The exhibit is open till 11/06/2006 and has a large display of lucha libre masks.

Notice the article mentions Nacho Libre again; I think that’s going to be a reoccuring theme for the eight months. (It’s due out in the US 06/02/06.) Like all movies featuring things some people care intensely about and most people know nothing about, it’s going to shape the mainstream perception of lucha libre. So, you know, please try not to suck, okay? Okay.

Three articles in Ovaciones, nothing you don’t know.
– Aficion preview doesn’t mention any of the Chikara guys.
– Interview with Halloween, re: Friday’s hair match, revenge for Damian. Tickets go from 60 pesos all the way to 250 for the expensive seats. (That’s $5.66 to $23.60.)
– Notes: IWRG, AAA previews. Arena Neza is running Thursday and Sunday, including Christmas and New Year’s Day. CMLL will run Friday shows at Coliseo during the off season, like they always do.

Box Y Lucha is up, but not updated. It seems like they’re going every other week on purpose now, though I’m sure the magazine is still being done weekly – they just aren’t so concerned about the website.

CMLL (MON) 11/28 Arena Puebla Results [box y lucha]

2) Asturiano, Tigre Rojo, the Tigre b Toro Bill Jr., Espiritu Maligno, Arissman
3) Sangre Azteca, Loco Max, Enterrador 2000 b Volador Jr., Metro, Centella de Oro
4) Mistico, L.A. Park, Hijo de Lizmark b Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy, Rey Bucanero

CMLL (SUN) 11/27 Arena Coliseo Results [box y lucha]
1) Caligula & Zayco b Danger & Molotov
2) Virus, Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico b Arkangel, Loco Max, Hooligan
3) Lizmark Sr., Pantera, Metro b Misterioso II, Dr. X, Masada
4) Pierroth & Hijo de Pierroth b Canek & Canek Jr.
Caneks were tecnicos here. Pierroth snuck a low blow in on Canek to pin him in the deciding fall, and Canek Jr. was pinned while arguging the low blow. Pierroth took Canek’s mask and wore it post match. Canek wants revenge.
5) Mistico, Hijo de Lizmark, Mr. Niebla b Tarzan Boy, Mascara Ano 2000, Olimpico

So apparently the Coliseo show did air on CAN52I on Sunday, and I was too busy watching football? I’ve GOT to figure out the autotimer on that VCR. I’ll try again next week, though we’ll probably get that semimain match.

I did catch Accion.
CMLL: Damian & Halloween vs Universo stuff – no Mistico clips
AAA: clips from what appeared to be a Charly Manson/Shocker vs Zorro/??? tag match. Charly got Zorro’s cane (why does he have one, anyway?). Swing one, Zorro ducks, Shocker gets it. Swing two, he hits the ropes, and the cane rebounds to hit himself. That’s pretty bad work, Charly.

No Box Y Lucha update today.

Seems like it’ll be a slow week; the big Halloween/Universo hair match is Friday, but I’m still not enthused for it. I keep expecting they’ll run something to set up a second big show on 12/16, but it obviously won’t happen till Friday.
