06/24 news

It’s a slow day, so let’s gaze at the dramatic Blue Demon #1 cover. (from SuperPlex‘s forum. Publisher’s website is ka-boom.com)

Lucha Insider has moved to http://luchainside.blogdrive.com/ (thanks to Raquel).

Not much news today; usual Arena Mexico preview and no IWRG results as of yet.

The hype for the Arena Mexico show includes CMLL admitting they’ve never actually seen Bronco II wrestle and have only been told his resume; almost seems like it’s an angle, though not a typical CMLL one.

AAA announced four “stellar” shows (not sure if that means TV tapings) for July.
– 07/01 (FRI) in Queretaro
– 07/03 (SUN) in Salamanca, Guanajuato
– 07/15 (FRI) in Acapulco
– 07/29 (FRI) in Ciudad Madero, Tamapulipas for Verano de Escandalo

It looks like 07/03 wouldn’t be a taping, to me.

Santo teams with Canek to face Ultimo Guerrero and Dr. Wagner in San Pedro Cholula on 07/26.

if you’re relying on this site to get all your lucha news: Juvi, Nicho (without the mask) and Super Crazy debuted on SD! last night as Mexicool. I haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Ovaciones has the “Lucha Libre Luxury” name, which means they read Meltzer’s fake spoilers.

Anyone else going to the Congress show? I’m gonna be in the city all afternoon, watching the Cubs/Sox game with friends (and hopefully not covering my eyes too much), and then head over to the show. If I think about it, I may steal borrow a camera and do a recap of some sort. I’ll try to sneak in an early update tommorow, but the ‘what aired’ bit won’t be up till Sunday.

3:00 Edit

I forget to check out Halcon.net’s latest magazine, and don’t want to add another post.

– Interview with Sangre Azteca. He confirms he’s not the son of Americo Rocca, which La Arena has correct. (La Arena is going to update again, right?)

– Bio sheet on Dos Caras Jr. He’s gotta be in an exclusive club, because I don’t think many people are getting $1,000 for their first match. (Or any match, actually.) Dos Jr. figures his best lucha match was the singles one with Ultimo. His favorite rudo is Dr. Wagner Jr and his favorite non-Mexican is Chris Benoit, so he’s clearly on pace to become a net darling. He says his finisher is the German Suplex, which will hopefully be added to the hopefully soon to be coming La Arena update.

– Interview with LLF’s Tsunami, and with 35 year veteran of the Yucatan, Espartano I

– A very brief interview with Angel Azteca, CMLL’s newest referee. They somehow failed to get Arkangel’s thoughts.

– Pictures of the NGX show. Looks very ‘hardcore’.

– A preview of AAA’s return to the Yucatan this Sunday, and a recap of the PAR show in Monterrey last Sunday.

I know it’s the style and the expectation, but I wish they magazines would spend more time talking to guys and tailoring their questions to the particular person they’re talking than just using the same questionnaire format (and some questions) each interview. Sometimes the normal questions work (like Tarzan Boy two weeks ago), but I didn’t get as much out of them for Sangre Azteca.

Lucha Times

Shows are on at normal times. Beyond that:

Saturday: I hope I’m right! I don’t think I actually am! I’m kinda wishcasting the Averno/Mistico match by any measure, and the middle matches don’t sound great. If they’re sticking with CMLL but just going in Alfredo’s tape order, we’re getting the La Copa Jr. show. If they only showed CMLL because AAA had “WWE pre-PPV Heat” show as lead up to TripleMania and we’re back on the AAA tapes, then, yea, Triplemania.

Sunday: AAA show worth skipping.

06/23 news

AAA (SAT) 06/18 Auditorio Municipal de Torreon, Coahuila Results
This card, a TV Taping, got switched around a bit.
1) Lola Gonzalez, Fabi Apache, Martha Villalobos vs Diabolica, Tiffany , Xochitl Hamada
No mention of why the hyped non-regulars didn’t appear.
2) TD, Colorman, Angel DQ the Black Family
Colorman was hurt
3) Corazon de Barrio & Incognito b Sexy Francis & Secy Piscis
Added match. Incognito is the new name of the Juarez Mistico. I love it, because it saves so much confusion.
4) Alan Stone, Chris Stone Antifaz, Intocable vs Mr. Aguila, Charly Manson, Psicosos
You know about Intocable’s injury – Ovaciones report says won’t wrestle for a long long time, but isn’t as final as the previous ones. Maybe there’s some hope there. No explaination on the Chris Stone thing.
5) Abismo Negro, Hator, Chessman b Latin Lover, Zorro, Shocker
Zorro was hurt. Rough show.
6) La Parka DQ Cibernetico [lights out]
Zumbido ran in to help Cibernetico, so he’s LLL.

Tomorrow’s CMLL card is so eh, they’re already promoting next week’s Arena Mexico show:

– Lady Apache will be making her first CMLL appearance post-AAA. Dark Angel is listed as her rival (which explains why Box Y Lucha did an interview with her at Arena Mexico), but like the last women’s match in Arena Mexico (way back on 11/15/01), Marcela and Amapola will fill out each side to make it a tag match.

They’re promoting this as an LLF appearance; I haven’t seen Apache on those lineups yet. Maybe they give Lady the CMLL Women’s belt (assuming they still have it)? Guessing Elektro might appear as well.

– Probably of bigger relevance is the announcement that the Gran Alternativa tournament will be held on the show.

Teams: (and why they could win)
Negro Casas & Maximo (it’s Negro Casas)
Ultimo Guerrero & Sangre Azteca (they finally decide to love Sangre)
Atlantis & La Mascara (La Mascara is getting pushed of late)
Universo 2000 & Dr. X (he’s the closest thing to a rival for Mascara)
Lizmark Jr. & Texano Jr. (recently retired dad push)
Pierroth & Nitro (it’s Pierroth)
Dr. Wagner & Misterioso II (uh – I like Misterioso II)
Damian & Apocalipsis (big push to the new wrestler/gimmick)

Apocalipsis will be making his debut here. Damian’s sometimes nickname is the Beast of the Apocalypse, which is good enough for the team up. I believe it’s opening card guy under a new mask, but I have no proof. If he and the mask are any good at all, they should put him with Averno & Mephisto.

I’ve got information about previous Gran Alternativa tournaments in the nFAQ section, and will add this info after the tournament (probably.)

Those two matches will take up much of the Friday card, so I wonder if guys get the week off, or if Tuesday might be slightly more loaded than usual.

La Mascara retained the Mexican Welterweight Championship over Nitro in Pachuca on 06/22.

Ovaciones also reminds the readers that Atlantis’ next kids day show will be 07/30 (same day as the IWRG Black Shadow show, but vastly different bell times), Mistico’s match tonight for IWRG is his debut match in that promotion, and Sunday’s Mascara Sagrada IWRG appearance is his first in the DF in a while.

06/22 news

Intocable’s career appears to be over

On Saturday, Intocable (Rene Gomez) had a match on the AAA TV Taping with the debuting Stone Brothers versus Mr. Aguila, Charly Manson and Psicosis. During the course of the match, Psicosis kicked him in the back (the report says flying kick, but that could mean any number of kicks), and Inotcable lost feeling in his right arm and right leg. A doctor checked on him then, but did not find the eventual injury. It was only a day later in Monterrey (and possibly after dragging himself thru another match) that the spinal injury was discovered. The problem appears to be with the connections to his fifth and sixth vertebrae, but it also appears to be only partially reversible. The reports do seem to allow the slimmest chance he will ever be the same.

Intocable was, at least until the CMLL jumps of the last few months, a second tier guy who was on the track to become a top one. He fit the Pena idol babyface mode of a young attractive (in a male-stripper sense) self confident man. He was Latin Lover’s obvious successor, to the point where Latin wanted assurances Intocable would cut out his stripper antics as to not draw attention from his own. While not great, Intocable was good enough to fit in with the AAA workers and their style.

AAA aggressively recruits similar types to Intocable, so they’ll be able to find a replacement. He didn’t appear to have any pending feuds (although the match on Saturday might have been an attempt to establish one, or his role as AAA Tony Rivera to team with the Stone Brothers), so he can be dropped out of TV easily, though I expect the match where he got hurt will be televised at some point.

Hopefully, Intocable gets at least enough feeling and range of motion back to have a normal life.

CMLL (TUE) 06/21 Arena Coliseo Results [ova]
1) Karisma & Espiritu b Polvora & Vaquero
2) Molotov, Sombra de Plata Jr., Valiente b Mogur, Jeque, Flecha
3) Stuka, Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico b Hooligan, Super Comando, Koreano
Line quoted for Ryan: “The felines follow by good way, now have an opportunity by the crown of pairs of the Coliseo Arena.” I smell title match.
4) Black Tiger, Emilio Charles, Hijo de Pierroth b Brazo de Plata, Lizmark, Felino
You know, most of the time, guys work either Tuesday and Friday. But then Black Tiger is not most guys.
5) Mistico, Atlantis, Blue Panther b GdI (Ultimo, Rey, Olimpico)
Atlantida on Olimpico for the victory. Ovaciones is upset with Mistico for not doing an interview with them last week.

Averno & Mephisto retained the CMLL Tag Team Champion over Blue Demon and Satanico in Guadalajara.

Box Y Lucha’s cover has shot of the cage match. The poster is Ultimo Guerrero

Inside:
– interview with Bronco talking about his dream to one day wrestle in Arena Mexico; Mistico and Dr. Wagner recruited him to fight Perro’s faction.
– interview with LLF’s Dark Angel, talking about visiting Mexico City to learn. She says she came from Canada to wrestle in Mexico because there’s not the same passion for wrestling (or maybe just lucha) up there.
– Perro Aguayo explains his rib injury was actually *before* the Cage of Death, but he wrestled anyway. Could explain why he was the first one to leave. His goals are Universo’s hair (for obvious reasons) and Mistico’s mask (because he’s the golden boy of CMLL)
– interview with Elektro, briefly mentioning his previous CMLL stint as Ultimatum. Sounds like he’s on a part time, per-show agreement. He says he wrestled like he wrestled in AAA because that was the style of the promotion, and he’ll be more CMLL like in CMLL. Elektro seeks matches with Bucanero, Olimpico, Mephisto, and Nitro. Was Nitro around last time Elektro was around and that’s why? Weird pick.
– interview with Averno. His dad didn’t let him near wrestling when he was growing up, trying to steer him towards any other career. He talks about being really nervous for his match (10/18/96), teaming with his dad against Cassandro and he thinks Guerrero Star (but he can’t remember – Cassandro is easier to remember.)
a longer interview with Crazy Boy.

06/21 news

The main Ovaciones interview is with Villano IV and Villano V in an identity protection bit: there’s a guy wrestling as Villano Jr, claiming to be trained by Villano I, and the existing Villanos dispute all of that. As far as Villano III, IV and V are concerned, they are the last Villanos.

Ricky Marvin heads back to Japan on Friday. He’s planning on returning to Mexico in September.

I posted a recap of this past weekend’s CMLL on Sunday, but I forget to link to here it till now. I wasn’t as blown as away as I hoped to be; they needed to have three complete matches instead of four cut ones.

I’m going to see if I can knock off another recap of something this week.

06/20 news

LuchaInsider is DOWN. They were too far in the negative on points, I guess.

I didn’t even attempt to proofread. Sorry!

3) Rayo de Jalisco Jr, Dos Caras Jr, Hijo de Lizmark vs Pierroth, Blue Demon, Hector Garza
3) LA Park, Bronco II, Elektro vs Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero
Elektro you know – this is his CMLL redebut. Bronco’s not the Bronco who previously was in CMLL. CMLL says he’s from Monterrey, with 10 years of experience and was trained by Chucho Villa. The assumption is Silver King finally had to drop the Black Tiger identity – at least in CMLl, since they don’t want problems with NJPW – and decided to just change masks.

CMLL (SUN) 06/26 Arena Coliseo Lineup [cmll]
1) Shockercito & Bracito de Oro vs Gitanito & Sombrita

With El Texano’s retirement, Signo and Negro Navarro are bringing El Texano Jr. into their Los Misioneros de la Muerte.
5) Mascara Sagrada, Matrix, Black Dragon vs Black Tiger, Pantera, Enfermero Jr.
Tiger’s apparently going to keep using the name outside of CMLL – if he even is Bronco.

4) Mil Mascaras, Blue Demon Jr., Solar, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Dr. Wagner, Angel Blanco Jr., Enfermero Jr., el Hijo del Galdiador.

Super Lucha’s cover is of course, Mascara Magica’s bald head. Does “Octagon tiene mal de Parkinson” mean what I think it means?

Important Stat!: Don Poncho Penaloza, the offical barber of CMLL, says Mascara Magica was the 82nd head he’s shaved.
