CMLL Line - 02/07/04 (#113)

Two matches were cut out of the US Airing, according to WrestleHolicsVideo's listing

Vignette: Dr. Wagner Jr. tells it's necessary for our health to watch him in the ring on Galavision. Or something like that.

Stellar Moments:

Lo Impresionante: Neutron takes a powerbomb and then a dropkick to the head from Sangre Azteca
Lo Dolorso: Violencia's apron somersault senton to the floor, with nothing in between.
El Triunfo: Virus beats Romero with the Rocking Horse.
La Combinacion: Atlantis pushes Casas - into a Thesz Press on Panther. And Shocker's dive. And Warrior's dive gone wrong.

Vignette: Rey and Ultimo discuss their dual participation in the upcoming four way tournament for a title shot. They're both ready - even for a match against each other. Somehow they put over the Wednesday Arena Coliseo shows in all of this. Anyway, Tarzan isn't here and there doesn't seem to be any tension between them.

The title this tournament is for is the Tohoku Jr. title, which CMLL prefers to refer to as the Asia Jr. Title. It's Michinoku Pro title that Atlantis won while on a tour for them, and got to bring back to Mexico to defend. I'm of the impression that's it's a secondary title (mostly because they're letting Atlantis leave the promotion with it, although he's gone back a couple times since) but they're building it up as an important thing here. Coincidentally, Atlantis is celebrating his 20th year as a wrestler; the title match next week is part of that celebration.

1 Tohoku Jr. #1 Contender semifinal
Rey Bucanero vs Perro Aguayo Jr.
11/07/03, Arena Mexico
65
mano y mano 3:51 Aguayo punches? Rey while okay for a one fall, wasn't as good as the last one and clipped? finish hurt

Notes: I guess that's the tecnico/rudo alignment - last time we saw these two, it could've gone the other way. Perro's already beating up Rey on the ramp when we join the match.

Square dropkick to the head keeps Rey down, and Perro works in stomps. Baby Richard encourages them to take it to the ring, but Perro ignores to hit a running clothesline. Perro goes to grab part of the ramp fencing that's always loose, but Richard steps and stands on it to prevent him from getting it. Perro instead follows Rey to the ringside area, measuring Rey before booting him into the front row. Perro performs some seat reorganizing before throwing Rey into a front row section. The ring announcer, apparently given up waiting for Perro to take this into the ring, blows the whistle (a minute after we've come in), and Richard heads over to Perro to have a word with him. Perro pulls Rey out of the crowd and starts towards the ring, but ends up posting Rey instead. After some more punches, Rey's finally rolled in the ring. Perro doesn't follow himself. He starts off looking for something around ringside before being distracted by the fans mixed reaction again. Perro grabs the small ring box step and head into the ring, but Bay Richard cuts him off and forces him to stop the step before getting to the ring. Noticeably, as Perro dropkicks and stomps Perro, a ring side official grabs the step from play. Perro goes up, perhaps to finish off Rey with a moonsault, but Rey gets in his first offensive-ish move of the match by knocking Perro off the top rope and to the floor. Figuring that ten seconds without pain is probably asking too much, Rey follows with a slingshot tope con giro, bowling over Aguayo. Both guys are down, so we look at the crowd a bit. Looks like Rey was able to pull himself in. Seeing as Perro, as typical in this match, is in no hurry to come back in, Rey decides he doesn't trust a countout and heads to the apron. A somersault bodyblock attempt completely misses - Perro moved easily - and Rey is looking as bad as Violencia did last week. The doctor and Richard are out to look at him, but Perro doesn't like that idea and pulls the Doctor away so he can get in more stomps. BEER TO THE HEAD. Rey may have been refreshed by the foam, so Perro keeps him from doing anymore by choking him out with a camera code. Richard is able to pull Perro off enough that Rey can take a few steps to escape, before collapsing. Perro relents enough to allow Rey back in the ring, and giving Rey some recovery time by staring at the crowd. Back to strikes, as Rey is forced in the corner with kicks and chops. Aguayo backs up to the other corner, and goes to the second rope to pan the crowd. Back to the matter at hand - charge, miss, Rey moved out of the way. Aguayo is surprised and easy prey to a clothesline. Rey follows with some punches, and probably a little too much yelling for his only offense of his match. Much to his displeasure, Rey is pulled of Rey for using a closed first - Rey can't believe Richard chooses to enforce the rules now of all times in this match. Richard turns back to check on Aguayo, who seems to appreciate Richard's help - as a shield, throwing him in the way of a Bucanero dropkick! Perro takes down Rey with a series of clotheslines and some closed fists. Crowd shot. Perro covers Rey, and Richard has just recovered enough to count - one two three. (3:51) Those must've been some punches. Crowd seems pro-Perro.

We melt right into the entrances for the next match

2 Tohoku Jr. #1 Contender semifinal
Ultimo Guerrero vs Dr. Wagner Jr.
11/07/03, Arena Mexico

mano y mano 5:20 Wagner small package Ultimo comments

Notes: No music. I wonder if there was a battle royal to see these things that we didn't see - that'd explain the no music. Ultimo waits for Wagner to get in the ring to strike.

And he's immediately met with a knee, so much for that. Wagner with two chops, whip, Guerrero with a drop toe hold and an elbow to the back to get back control. Ultimo off the ropes, shoulderblock, no one's budging. Wagner tells him to try again. Ultimo listens and take a  dropkick to the knee, running dropkick to the head for his silliness. Ultimo pumps his fist for the crowd. Back to work. Open hand slap. Whip, reversed, dropkick looked not even close from this angle but Wagner's going out, Ultimo runs, tope con giro! It runs in the tag team. Ultimo up first and slapping. Wagner retreats into the ring, but Ultimo follows. Corner whip, corner clothesline, corner whip, corner clothesline, corner whip, corner - no, Wagner stops short and moves out of the way of the charge, leaving Ultimo to take the knee bump to the floor. Wagner is pumped. Apron dive somersault bodyblock HITS! Wagner poses, because he didn't die like Rey just did. Wagner takes some time to wander around ringside, instead of following up. Ultimo is able to get back to his feet, but Wagner's got the health advantage as he brings this back in the ring

CROWD SHOT CLIP

Ultimo is standing over Wagner. Argh. We just had twenty seconds of wandering around, and now they clip? Ultimo suplexes Wagner to the apron, Wagner retaliates by suplexing Ultimo out there too. They battle on the apron, with Wagner knocking Ultimo off with a forearm but ended up down because of a clip anyway. Wagner lands on his feet anyway and charges Ultimo - OVERHEAD BELLY TO BELLY SUPLEX ON THE FLOOR! Ultimo will be FINED. Doctor and Richard check on Wagner, who is selling this as big as Rey's missed dive. Likewise, we get a replay. Ultimo appears to give his opponent more time to recover, but follows with a slam on the floor anyway. Ultimo brings Wagner in as they're getting counted out, climbing to the top rope as Wagner crawls on the mat. Top rope elbow to the back connects. Ultimo stops to pose. Wagner's pulled up to his feet, so Ultimo can chop him back down with knees to the midsection. Wagner pulled up and kicked. Kick to the back of the right knee.  Wagner picked up as Ultimo yells at the crowd. Sit down powerbomb! Wagner may be out, but Ultimo isn't done. Going up - no, thinking about, now doing it anyway - moonsault comes up empty! Wagner moved, and now he's really moving, clothesline, clothesline. Wagner's got a limp going. Clothesline is ducked - Ultimo Rock Bottom! Ultimo ties up Wagner's legs, but Wagner grabs him - small package one two THREE! (5:20) Ultimo can't believe he just lost like that. But he did. Lots of cheers for Wagner, but the doctor is in to check on him, and worse, Perro is out to attack him - final is now.

3 Tohoku Jr. #1 Contender Final
Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Perro Aguayo Jr.

mano y mano 6:56 Perro half crab Wagner comments

Notes: Very much rudoishy, Perro rushes the ring to stomp on Wagner's bad right leg, before adding an elbow drop. More general stomping on the right side - he's aiming just as much for the hip joint as the knee joint. Wagner up, but knocked back down with open hand slaps. Perro yanks Wagner out of the ring as he's going out himself, so he can beat Wagner around ringside. He's at least thoughtful enough to wave a warning to a section before he launches Wagner at them - Wagner ends up flying over the first row of seats and taking out the second one. Perro's momentarily prevented from getting at Wagner some more, so he throws the first section of seats (there's sets of four attached to each other, and they're not nailed down or anything) and shoves it out of his way. The second set of seats is sandwiched to the crowd, the crowd tries to strike a balance between "getting out of the way" and "getting a really close view of the action." Aguayo smartly sandwiches of Wagner's hurt right leg inside a chair and stomps it to hurt more. Wagner's not out of it, but he's pretty immobile that position. Perro punches him in the head a few times to keep him that way. Back to stomping, while ignoring Baby Richard's pleading to get out of the crowd. Baby Richard tries to pull him away, Perro pushes him slightly, and Baby Richard bearhugs him and walks him away from Wagner. Richard tries to get Perro to go back in the ring, but that's not happening. Perro waits for his spot and as Wagner stands up, he gets booted back down. Chop. Chop, right, right, right, Wagner's sat in a seat and Perro boots Wagner and his chair over. If there was such thing as a seated 8 count, this is where it'd happen. Perro dives Wagner's right knee into the chair a few times, as the section of seats slowly tip over and fall on the floor. Again, Perro is held back - again, I think its' more so they can reset the damage to the seats as much as anything. Wagner gets to his feet again, but Perro is still in total control of the offense, striking Wagner in the direction of the announce booth before running Wagner into it. Perro opts not to get a few words in with the announcers, referred to chop and headbutt Wagner again. Another boot, and back to the ring? Wow. That's different. Perro looks at the crowd before going in, where he, looks at the crowd some more. Dropkick to the knee - uh, what happened there? Perro kinda slipped/slid shot and Wagner didn't really sell and now we get a crowd shot that probably should've been edited in 5 seconds previously, all considering. Back, and Wagner is Wagnering up. Perro's chops have no effect on him. Wagner feeds on Perro's clotheslines. Each one gets Wagner more pumped up, till Perro takes a hiptoss over the top rope and all the way to the floor. Now Wagner is out and he's the one waving to the crowd to get out of the way - Perro gets thrown three (!) rows into the crowd, right into the lap of a woman who doesn't seem to mind have Perro Aguayo Jr. in her lap. The crowd and security try to move her out of there, with Perro and the seat section in front of her now leaning on her, but she seems more amused by the circumstances than put off and takes her time leaving. Wagner's all about returning everything from before, as he beats Perro in the seats just like he was beat. Wow, is Baby Richard actually counting them out? I wonder how that'd work - no #1 contender? Maybe the fact that Baby Richard stops counting and tries to stop Wagner's actions on the outside mean he doesn't really know if he can do that here. With Perro now sitting on the collapsed second section of seats, and using the third section to prop himself up, Wagner grabs the first section and stands it up. Lifted up a little, and dropped on Perro! Baby Richard gets more upset here - he didn't seem to like when they were throwing each other towards the crowd, but using the sections of seats as weapons seems even more careless, and he has a serious seeming conversation with Wagner about what should not keep happening here. Wagner's next move is to pull Perro out of the seat section, chop him a couple times, and dismissively throw him back in the ring. Perro seems out of it, and Wagner's not showing any sign of the limp. Big running clothesline by Wagner, but he's tried. Crowd loud for Wagner. He's their choice right now. Long crowd shot, and Perro is down when we come back. Wagner's heading for the corner, but first he lowers the the knee pad and cloth knee brace on his right leg - he's got a elastic cloth one underneath all of that. Despite all that pain, he's heading up - top rope splash but no one's home! Perro up and killing Wagner with a dropkick to the head. Wagner's dragged over to the corner, and the crowd is against Perro as he head up - top rope double stomp. HALF CRAB! Perro may be losing his mind, but he's no moron. Wagner - gives! (6:56)

Perro Aguayo Jr. will face Atlantis next week for the Tohoku Jr. Title. The doctor is back to check on the Doctor, while Aguayo travels the crowd to find support. I guess that's why he keeps going out there during the match? Looks like Wanger is going to need help leaving the ring.

Next Week: Atlantis, Pierroth, Silva, Mascara Ano, Ultimo, Apolo, Rey, Universo, Niebla, Virus, Havana Brother I and much much more

Perro slaps hands with the kids as we're reminded he's champion. He's very much a tecnico leaving here. And that's it.

Rating: Bases on the quality of the finish, ring work, internal/external storyline, consistency and my whims. Also, various other (random) factors that I can't think of right now. 0-100 for matches.

Breakdowns: 3 Matches (16:07) about XX.X% of showtime (40:00);

Average Match Rating 68
Overall Match Rating: 3 (but oh so on the line)
3 Singles
2 Tecnico over Rudo wins
1 Rudo over Rudo wins
Turns: Perro may or may not be a rudo. Depends who you ask.
Show Assessment: Unusual but welcome for the show to have a theme or plot

Closing Notes:

1. I liked this a lot more when I watched it casually, and maybe took some assumptions about stuff I wasn't paying attention.
2. The first match is hurt a lot by the whatever finish. The second one was fine, but could've been more.
3. The stuff with the knee in the third match was cool, but I wish we would've had more of that seating rearrangement.
4. I still think it was a neat idea, but I'm not sure if I'm following right - I'm starting to get the impression that Aguayo isn't as much turning rudo as being an Aguayo.
