New Champion

Would you believe that Satanico beat Felino for the CMLL Welterweight Title? Would you believe that Satanico is a welterweight? At least one of those is true.

My spider sense tells me not to bet on the Infernales for the Mexican Trios anymore. While I still expect them to get to the finals, it is a Felino led team they’d be going against, and this is the easiest way for the wins to be swapped; Felino loses one title but gets another. Non stable groups haven’t seemed like good champions of late, so I think this might mean the title disappears.

Supporting: Ever since the Havana/Marvin/Virus/Volador stuff, they have been moving up Volador and hyping him a bit. So this’d be a title belt for him.

Reason why Safari would get a belt: Ummmmmmm, er….never mind

12/12 will be the last show in for the Havana Brothers (Ricky and no Puma, plan them for that card). Doesn’t make since to have them in for the off period (they list as being back in Arena Mexico “in four to six weeks”, so apparently they’re getting permission through mail order), but they have no return date planned.

New Old Lucha Recap

I got a new recap of some older lucha up at the Weinerboard. Best of Rey vs Juventud from 1995/96. And yes, it is as much fun as it sounds.

wrestleholics has a new batch of 2003 Lucha in. Both stuff from Mexico City and Guadalajara. 5 tapes worth of time-wasting fun.

cmll.com news

Quickly:

– Angel Azteca vs Arkangel mask/mask is offically set for 12/5 after another round of mask ripping this past Friday. I’m strong sure Ark’s taking this.

The 12/5 card is shaping up something like this
Universo vs Pierroth, Mask/Hair
Angel Azteca vs Arkangel, Mask/Mask
Mexican Trios final
Probably something with Perro Jr. vs Atlantis
something to get the older guys on the card
something to get the younger guys on the card

– In something that might be intersting but won’t make TV, for Arean Coliseo’s celebration of CMLL’s 70th on 11/30 will feature a four way hair/hair/hair/hair cage match with names: Tarzan Boy, Negro Casas, Satanico, Mascara 2000. That’s a pick ’em.

The Guapos/Taliban cage match didn’t work for me because it was fairly evident after a couple minutes they were just going to do a beatdown till the time ran out, and only then start doing comeback spots. Comebacks previous to that really don’t lead anywhere, since all it is waiting for the time to expire.

Maybe if there had been a better story while the waiting was going on – instead of general beating, very specific targetted attacks to take someone tecnico out to ensure that they’d be the last person remaining – it would have worked better. Or maybe just having four different people take control for a while will work for this one.

– Perhaps because Casas is not involved in that, he did not particpate in the Mexico National Trios Tournament, but the team he would’ve been on (Felino/Volador/Safari as a replacement) still won the first part. The tournament brackets have been updated for the second part this Friday. Tony Rivera takes Safari’s place on the odd Blue Panther/Tigre Blanco trio, but the Infernales are the easy favorites.

It’d be quite intersting if that Holligan/Ramstein/Azteca vs Virus/Sagrado/Marvin match made TV, but don’t hold your breath.

Arena Mexico lineup:
Atlantis/Niebla/Lizmark vs Perro Aguayo Jr./Tarzan Boy/Pierroth
(A rematch of their previous title match, and it appears Perro has turned rudo. On some level, it would make sense for him to help Pierroth against the Capos…)
Rayo de Jalisco/Super Porky/Volador Jr. vs Dr. Wagner/Black Tiger/Universo 2K
(That is the trios champions, this is not a title match. Volador moves up for this one.)
Mexico Trios Tournament, Part 2
Olimpico/Psicodelico Jr./Tecnico TBNL vs Hollgain/Sangre Azteca/Ramstein
(that’s listed as Marvin’s spot right now, don’t think he’ll work twice.)
Shockercito/Fantasy vs Espectrito/Mini Violencia

Tonight in Arena Coliseo:
Felino (c) vs Satanico for the CMLL Welterweight Title
(weight limit?)
Panther/Virus/Sagrado vs GdI/Emilio
(Did Panther turn tecnico?)
Havana Brothers vs Warrior/Magica/Masada
(surprising they’re in town and not working the tournament – maybe it’s just an non-outsider thing)
Ultimo Dragoncito/Olimpico/Mini Brazo de Oro vs Mini Pierroth/Fire/Sombrita
Explosivo/Sombre de Plata vs Jeque/Super Comando

make that 19

Add Tarzan Boy vs Shocker from last week’s show to that list at 88.

Next week would be the last TV before the deadline, and either the Cibernetico (which was not at ALL mentioned during this week’s show, so don’t plan on it) or the main event could make it 20, given time and oppurtinty.

CMLL.com hasn’t updated quite yet, so I’ll do more when they do.

CMLL TV Top 18

Or, everything that I gave an 85 or better during the RSPW calender year

LONG DISCLAIMERS: Only stuff I saw on CMLL TV counted, and only in the form saw it. If I match never made it to TV (because it was clipped out or we’re so lagged I won’t see it till 2014), I don’t have an opinion on it. You can throw a blanket over any match rated between 85 and 88, because I might order them differently if I saw ’em again. But they’re worth checking out. I haven’t seen anything here since I rated it, and I certiantly dig some people more than others.

RSPW year goes from 11/02/02 to 11/01/03. I may try this again when we get the full ’02 of CMLL TV done (sometime April?)

LATER: Which shows you need to get, and other award type stuff.

08/08 TV is up.

11/08 TV

The TV from 20 days ago (and really much longer than that in Mexico) is up. 11/08 should come along in the next 24 hours – it’s all done, just needs to be converted from my garbled typing to the nearly readble form you’re accustomed too! (I’ll probably catch up on other TV before doing 11/15)

Off the top of my head, and surely omitting something, here’s how I rank CMLL TV matches from the RSPW calendar year (that I’ve seen)

1) Ultimo Guerrero vs Shocker, CMLL LH Title – 12/02
2) Havana Brothers vs Virus/Volador/Marvin – 08/08/03 (2nd TV match)
3) Ricky Marvin vs Zumbido, hair/hair
4) Havana Brothers vs Virus/Volador/Marvin – 1st TV match
5) Ultimo vs Shocker, from the same show as Ricky/Zumbido

2 and 3 could go either way.

There are probably some other UG/Shocker stuff that I’m forgetting. I’ll stroll through the recaps and get numbers and such when I’m actually seriously doing this, but since I’ve got that last NJPW-LA/Undercard Heroes match fresh in my mind, I thought I’d throw it out there.

I have a feeling if I bought (more? any) tapes, I might be more numb to the HB/Virus/Volador/Marvin stuff – I get the feeling that it’s not that they doing the style much better than everyone else, it’s just guys I like who I’m seeing do it. But someone should correct me on that.
