Lucha Times is updated with the rerun schedule for this week <- optimism at it's finest! Galavision.com has removed the Lucha Libre preview page which is way up there on bad signs; the lucha libre board remains. I think I might start investigating tape buying plans...
Month: February 2003
Title Change Vampiro beat Tarzan
Title Change
Vampiro beat Tarzan Boy for the NWA LH Title, in Arena Coliseo D.F. on 2/9.
I’ve only seen this title defended one time on TV, vs Shocker in Feburary of last year. Tarzan Boy won it from Black Warrior way back on
CMLL’s show in Miami went well! Must’ve been good local advertising. They’re next trying for a show in Houston on 3/2 – no card announced as of yet.
Also, you can sleep at night knowing that Violencia retained the prestigious Metro Heavyweight Title over Gran Markus. I was kinda expecting a title change – Pierroth winning the title from Markus and Markus winning it back would not only extend this even longer, but Markus could get the big win without getting Pierroth’s hair – I gotta figure they’ve kept not doing it because he doesn’t want to give that up.
Oh wow. I dare you
Oh wow. I dare you to read this and count up the mistakes. I dunno if it’s someone who doesn’t know what’s going on and just hasn’t done the research, or if they’re being creative and seeing how much they could do without actually having anyone catch ’em.
While I’m posting, I might as well check CMLL.com news:
– Special Arena Lopez main event on 02/12 – Ultimo/Rey vs Casas and…Dr. Wagner. WEIRD.
– Marshall did lose the Nuevo Guapos elimination match to Tony Rivera, so now we’re down to Rivera, Ricky Marvin (who’s got a hair/hair match this week vs Zumbido in Arena Mexico – I think I’m gonna have to get a tape if they don’t start turning up new matches soon), Loco Max, Terrible, Genetico, and Mr. Power. I think we can cut the last two out of the picture pretty easily. Sounded like they had other plans for Terrible, though he’s a strong canadiate for some position. Loco Max probably has a future in a Zumbido-ese role, but I don’t see him fitting in the group. And Ricky is superior to Tony, I think we can agree. I figure it’ll go down to a Terrible/Marvin match as the final (Ricky gets his win back over Loco Max, Terrible rudos it over Rivera to set up the final match) and Marvin gets the win there. I don’t know for sure, though, because it’s tough to figure out what they’re looking for – hey, it’s quite like Tough Enough.
– Ultimo and Rey did beat Atlantis and Niebla, and news guy wonders who could possibly beat that duo. That IS a good question.
KrisZ’s lineups say Violencia is defending something called the “Metropolitan Heavyweight Title” today against Gran Markus Jr. at Arena Coliseo. Because the one thing we needed was another belt…
Galavision Lucha Times is updated.
Galavision Lucha Times is updated. The times are right. Everything else…well, we’ll see. Both shows are listed as 2:30 this weekend.
Let’s just do some news
Let’s just do some news bites:
-Televisa (who, I believe, own Galavision) and CMLL aren’t getting along. According to the Observer, Arena Mexico had been hosting weekly boxing shows for Televisa, but canceled them back in September due to extremely poor attendance. Since they weren’t getting their boxing show anymore, Televisa no longer wanted to pick up the production tab for the wrestling. The last few Arena Coliseo shows (when they were running that building only) and the return to Arena Mexico ended up being filmed by rival television company Multivision. Televisa reacted by keeping AAA in a prime slot for 90 minutes, but cutting CMLL to 60 minutes and in a weaker slot. Dave goes on to mention that there’s talk of bringing back boxing for two shows a month with bigger names, but doesn’t say how this would affect the relationship.
Dave doesn’t say it, but I wonder if this might tie into having the reruns on Galavision the last few weeks. Wait and see.
– In a special Constitution Day show at Arena Coliseo (Tonight), Ultimo and Rey defend the tag team titles against Atlantis and Mr. Niebla. That would seem to be good – I wonder if GdI get a return match for the Trios titles?
Not sure if this would air – the usual Arena Coliseo taping show is still scheduled, but they usually make the effort to show the include special shows.
The other top two matches are Vampiro/Porky/Tinieblas Jr vs the Capos and Anibal Jr./Olimpico/Pantera vs Emilio/Mascara Magica/Mephisto
– Last night, at the normal Coliseo show, there was a Nuevo Guapos elimination match between Tony Rivera and Marshall. (CMLL.com says Zumbido earlier lost a similar match earlier, which I never saw but at least explains what happened there.) I haven’t seen results for the show yet, but I’d guess Tony moves on. 6 are left.
– Dr. Wagner wants his own group of followers – if Shocker can do it, he can do it better. The requirements to earn an MD of CMLL from Wagner U are apparently to be very good, recoginized as such, and also to be very evil. I think Satanico might earn the degree on Life Experience.
– CMLL will be in Miami! Saturday! No arena announced! That’s gonna make it hard to attentd.
– You mentioned that challenge from Shocker – he probably knew at the time that they would meet this Friday, at Arena Mexico. It’s currently non-title, but I guess you never know. Ultimo’s got a really long week
Other matches are Rayo/Vampiro/Atlantis vs Wagner/Pierroth/Tarzan (return of Rayo), Ricky/Casas/Felino vs Zumbido/Emilio/Terrible, Volador/Virus/Safari vs JLegion, Sombra/Neutron/Explosivo vs Comando/Mayo/Polvora (the other tough thing about being a opening match faction is that you’re probably not all together often.)
– Stuart says some of the rumored names for the Super Junior tournament include Dr. Wagner Jr., Black Tiger and Super Crazy, but since they’ve all done NJPW tours over the last year, that’s not a big surprise.
It’s hard to talk about
It’s hard to talk about lucha when there’s no new lucha to talk about. We do get a few tidbits, though.
Super Demekin, who competes in Osaka Pro (the lucha-junior hybrid fed run by Super Delphin) announced he’s going on an excursion to Mexico for some seasoning. No word on exactly where he’s going, but hopefully it’s CMLL because he’s quite a talented youngster.
From KrisZ:
“Two big challenges came out of the EMLL show at Arena Mexico last night as Zumbido challenged Ricky Marvin to a Caballera contra Caballera match and Shocker challenged Ultimo Guerrero for a re-match for the CMLL Lt. Heavyweight Title.”
Those would be great if they happened, but we should remember that challenges get handed out like candy on Halloween but are rarely accepted.
