I still don’t think I’m even an intermediate player; I’ve learned some basic elements of strategy, but I make some dumb bets and have been on the right side of on 30 % vs 70 % bets a lot in this two tournaments. There’s a lot of people who don’t know what they’re doing at all and don’t try because it’s free disposible poker and maybe I’m a little better than them, but I’m not really good.

I think I’m done with poker for today, though. I’m out of things to do while playing, and it’s slowing down my laundry.

6th place out of 800. Sweet!

Thank you to THIS for killing four hours tonight.

My favorite parts of losing

– 90 minutes earlier, I had a guy all-in, beating him on the turn – and he beat me on the river. He doubled up next hand and really turned it around…so he was around 90 minutes later to beat me.

– The guy who went out 9th was still doing the “I can’t believe you played those horrible cards in a horrible situation against my magnificant hand and got a lucky card – I am BETTER THAN YOU, the game shouldn’t allow me to LOSE TO YOU” fifteen minutes later when I was out and tougher beat (had As vs 4s, till a K paired him up on the river), so I got to be the bigger man.

Having gotten into a phone conversation with someone who was talking how crazy I was to play in a tournament starting at 12:30am (I haven’t been able to play in quite a while and I have no real plans for Saturday) and semi-sarcastically told me to text message him instead of calling him when I did well was the best part of finnishing sixth. I HOPE THE BEEP WOKE HIM UP.

I think this was better than the Bulls/Heat game I went to tonight (never got the lucha info, had free tickets), if only because the game highlights were

– KIRK! blocking a Shaq layup in a play you’ll never ever see again
– My pick in the Inflatabulls race straggling in third till the last leg, deciding to Go All Out, making up massive ground, then blowing out his (inflatable) ankle and collasping in a heap. It was like watching someone run at full sprint and suddenly suffer a horrfying knee injury, without the pain.
– the Lovabulls going out to center court to do the your typical Arbaian dance – and the PA guy never playing the music they wanted and getting half booed off the court.

They’re half booing Curry and Chandler now – maybe more at the end, but we got out of there. Curry getting hurt and barely playing in the second half was critical – he’s the only things that passes for a center around these parts, which doesn’t work to well against Shaq.

Also not working well against Shaq: Chander’s one low post move. And Curry’s one low post move.

Haven’t played good much lately, but I finished 13th in my first (I think) Omaha Hi/Lo freeplay tournament last night (only played Omaha in mixed games tournaments and it always killed me till today), which is my best finish in any tournament in quite a while.

Today, I played in a BPP points tournament on pokerpages – 1 point is worth 1 cent, basically, but I was going into a 400 person field and you need to finish 27 or better to cash. Hit a few nice hands, and a couple even luckier ones, leaving me with ~100,000 chips with 33 left; a little below average, but enough that I could’ve put my feet up and cashed in.

Instead, I do the logical thing and bet strong after KK, end up going all in against someone with slightly more cash but a slightly worse hand of JJ…and like it’s supposed to happen 18% of the time, a J showed up and a K didn’t. Missed out on cashing for the first time by only 5 spots.

Kinda mentally stuck on it

Also, after about more than two months of playing, my three real person/29 sim Madden ’05 league got down with it’s first season! In an upset, the Eagles (me) beat the Lions (J) 38 to 34, after getting trounced early in the season, and then went on to win the Super Bowl 48-24 over the Colts (M), as Manning proves he can’t win a big game even in the virtual world.

We’re just starting season 2 – we usually don’t make it past 3 before another game catches our eye or the new Madden comes out – and I’m going to try taking over the 3-13 Cleveland. Once you have a really good team, it’s boring to try again. J’s flipping the Lions (who were completely turned over to begin with – Gannon, Losman and Senace Wallace all saw quality time at QB, and Steven Davis was a MVP canadiate but still sat on the bench the last month of the season due to Trung! going nuts) is switching to the 49ers, just so he can make a whole bunch of moves on a new (and crappy) team.

So it’s been a busy 24 hours, video gaming wise.

I think the WWE name could make a nice percentage profit (it’s $250 belt – they get 500 people, they’re fine), but I don’t think it’s going amount to much. It blows my mind that Stats, Inc. is involved in this, which doesn’t say much for what I think of WWE I guess.

They’re using a salary cap system to limit rosters. Start the countdown to the first comment in the Torch about people complaining their salary is too low compared to someone (or, optionally, making hilarious comments about how they wish they really WERE paid that high.) I’d think it would’ve been better if they created some groups to limit your choices, but I’d thought it’d be wise to give away free to show that it actually works too and they didn’t ask me about that one. They don’t have the salaries up yet, but if someone spies ’em and would feel like passing them along…

It goes without saying that this is completely vulnerable to manipulation. I have no idea why they’d bother but it is.

My big curiosity is trying to put together a scouting report for this – running point totals for an equal eight weeks. You know I have the data, you know I have the insanity for the irrelevance. Time might be another matter.

(My smaller curiosity is seeing if I could do that myself and if I’m below the radar enough not to get a message from the WWE legal team. I’m supposed to be doing other mySQL things tho’.)

This means they’ll actually have to publicize C-level guy’s finishers, right? I’ll get to find out if Maven is using the missile dropkick or the second rope bulldog? I think I win.

MEL KIPER SLEEPER: Mark Jindrak. You can bank on getting 10 points a week, each and every week. Too bad there’s no one stuck on the B-Show treadmill now that’s using a foreign object weekly to win. Evil Godfather hitting people with a cane as his finisher would be unbelivable.

Thanks to Scott and everyone else who gave me tips. It’s appreciated.

This year was the polar opposite in experience in many different ways, and I’m not sure I’m doing this next year. I’d advise people not to bother if they asked right now.

edit starts here

I don’t want to write this but I want to get it out of my system. Last year (in the old updates), I did a whole big narrative because I was so pumped ever 4 hours later that I couldn’t wait to tell everyone. This year, I just want to go do something else. But fair is fair.

Reasons Why Madden Challenge Was Better This Year:

They moved it from Crystal Gardens to the Grand Ballroom, creating actual standing room. They used the extra room to push people just watching two feet away from those who are playing, so you’re not being breathed on.

The line to get in the door was really short and organized this time.

They actually gave a $5 off any EA Game coupon I’d use, as opposed to the worthless things last year.

Reasons Why Madden Challenge Was Worse This Year:

They did not tell anyone they were moving the event from Crystal Gardens to the Grand Ballroom. They did not even leave a note or sign in Crystal Gardens. You only found out if you happened to wander a half mile more down the pier, where they put up signs.

Once inside, the line to actually get your seeding in the tournament was long, aimless, and unorganized.

Back in the first line, they did not bother to tell you that you’d end up playing the person ahead or behind you when you got your bracelet. (They had a sign when you showed your ID, but that’s it – a bigger warning was needed.) If you showed up in line with a friend – a completely natural thing to do – you had fifty/fifty shot of facing them, and you were only informed of the situation and their refusal to do anything about it when you were seeded.

So, the guy I’ve played against for the two weeks and went over strategies we’re using in case it helps the other person is of course the person I’m facing in the first round. (It doesn’t help that I’m running an unlikely 4 game winning streak against him and I know he’s going to go into a huge funk if he loses here.) We both try to convince ourselves it was good because someone would move on to the second round (of 9? I think), but seeing as we both thought we’d AT LEAST get to the second round, that wasn’t much of a consolation.

Another thing that sucked, as I’m going to start randomly switching between a list and a narrative, is they had a DJ and they were going for a loud booming music club atmosphere, and it obviously does not work when the people running the tournament are trying to shout out numbers and communicate with others about how long they’ll wait. We checked in, asked that question, and got a “[mumbles well underneath sound level”] answer as he walks away from us, at about 10:45. This helped oh so greatly.

You’d think, for a game that has an actual sound track, they could just play THAT. At a moderate level. I don’t mind hearing people talking.

The MC, same guy as last year – probably the DJ was too, but the sound system was horrible in Crystal Gardens so no one had to hear him – was a nice energetic guy but got incredibly grating over time.

Anyway, we killed time by heading out to the Beer Garden where a, uh, aged rock band who’s name I never checked out played, and killed time by eating lunch. I probably should’ve taken it as another bad omen that the “cheeseburger with nothing on it” I ordered came back with lettuce and tomato.

We ended up wandering back inside around 11:30, still not having a clue about when we’d play and not being able to get any answers about how far they were along. Like I said last year, watching a lot of Madden games at the same time and being able to catch a close one every so often is fun (though of course, the way this day was going, all the games seemed to be going on at the same speed, so you’d have 15 minutes with nothing and then 2 good finishes right near each other that you could barely see because there was such a crowd), and one of the best moments was this bizarre and close sequence:

WAS down 9 to PHI 10 with about 25 seconds left, after having just scored a TD. They’re lining up for an extra point, but PHI jumps encroaches for no particular reason. WAS decides now they’re going to go for it – and they get it, putting them up by 1. So all the have to do is kick it deep and hold the Eagles – and they kick it out of bounds. PHI throws an incomplete on the first play, then gets two complete passes to get to the WAS 43 with just enough time for a field goal. A 60 yard field goal. Everyone crowds around to watch, except for the guy playing WAS who doesn’t really want to watch. Kick is 98 power, 86 accuracy, sails sails sails, looks short, looks like it’ll make it, hits the front of the crossbar and bounces back into the endzone. Maybe 99 power, he hits it.

We also saw another game go to OT 0-0. Scores were lower this year. PHI was the hottest team (NE and CAR were up there), ATL was way down, TB was way down, WAS and GB were the surprise teams. No one used the Bears as far as we saw.

Watching gets old. Watching with no semblance of idea when you’re going to play gets old. Watching grounded to one spot like a tree because you don’t know when you can go gets really old and makes your knees wacky if you do it for long enough time. I get bored and tired of standing and take off to sit outside and catch a bit of the Air and Water Show while my friend goes to find a bathroom.

Not four minutes later, I hear them start calling out numbers really really close to ours, for the first time all day. Of course. It takes about ten minutes for him to show back up, and we go in and find out we have to play as soon as someone’s done. Fun.

Despite having more room as mentioned before, they still laid the consoles really goofily. You still don’t have much lateral room, and the block of consoles ran right into the stage, which means you had even less room if you had to play right next to the stage. So that’s where they stuck us.

I played bad. It didn’t help that someone knew the plays I liked running, but I also should’ve done a better job of cutting down the plays I knew he liked running. It wasn’t my best performance, and I’d like to blame the conditions but it was best for both of us. I did make a great deep pass to Owens at the end of first half to pull to a halftime tie, but I got shut down and threw a INT for a TD in the second half to kill us.

During the second half, this guy behind us shows an abnormal interest in what’s going on, peppering us with comments. The general rule is you stand and stare, but you’re not saying anything unless it’s a friend of yours. He was apparently unaware of the rule, and also oblivious to sarcasm I threw back at him.

After our game finishes, it becomes clear – he’s so interested because he’s playing next, and he’s scouting. Which is fine, people do that. But as I turn to leave after the game’s over, he starts trying to pry answers from me on the kind of plays my friend was going to use. He was trying to get me to sell out a friend – and he was aware we were friends stuck playing against each other – for no particular reason. I could not believe him. (I did what any good friend should do – lied.) This would be the least of Second Round Guy’s idiocy.

The rule has seemed to be, the two years I’ve done this now, they have the first round winners play their second round games as soon as they win (and so on for the first five? rounds), so my friend J (MIN) and Annoying Guy (BAL) are playing in the same place right away.

As I’m watching – and squashed by a mountainload of people trying to get a look at how a Madden Challenge Winner (all those people are quite lame but that

I’m surprised I never got to writing more stuff leading up to Madden Challenge, since I’ve been thinking about quite a bit. (I did write something over on thegonz.org about Should You Play? but I can’t reach the site right now.) I think it’s due to lack of intersting things to talk about.

I settled on the Eagles. Dovanon F. McNabb has been scarily accurate on passes where I don’t approach having my feet set, and forcing the defenses to keep an eye on him will help open up passing lanes. Owens is a pretty good WR in the game, though he seems to drop more balls on hits than I’d like. On defense, the front 7 is good and the safteys cover well enough that I can call all the CB blitzes I like. And I do like calling them.

The downsides are not having a 90+ HB, but that’s mitigated by 2 minute quarters. You’re only going to focus on the run as a surprise tactic or a clock killing tactic, so a star there is unneccsary. Westbrook does a good job catching the ball, which helps me out a bunch. The bigger problem is the tremendous drop off from CB #2 (mid 80s?) to the CB #3 (low 70s.) This is a passing format, and the nickel back is going to be in use and be inferior to most anyone lineup in the slot. There’s no quick fix except helping out with coverage and forcing throws early.

Despite playing online and playing friends in people, I don’t know if I’ve really gotten a feel for how I’m going to do. Haven’t been able to get a Madden Challenge rules game going on-line, and out of the three games I’ve played the last two days, two were Mercy Rule blowouts against clueless people, and one was tight only because luck was not on my side (two fluke fumbles in the red zone in the 4th, either touchdown would’ve ended it.) And people who play tank 3 straight games because a break didn’t go their way in game 1, then insist on playing a game 4 for real, and then tank that one after another tough call, they’re quite a waste of time.

General Rule: People going on tilt sucks when you don’t win any money off it.

Tactically, my defense is fairing pretty well and I’m sure I’ll be adquete there. Offense, I’m worried. I’ve got one play that I own more than Kenyans own marathons, but everything else is hit or miss and you can catch up to any one play if it’s coming 90% of the time.

I need work, and maybe I’ll get some tonight.
